When the evening shadows and the stars appear
and there is no one there to dry your tears...
If only there had been someone to dry her tears. Fia ran blindly in the night trying to remember which direction home was in. The tears that streamed from her eyes made it hard for her to even see what lay ahead. Her heart thumped noisily and frantically in her chest as terror swamped her tiny frame. She wanted to be tucked under her mother's wings where the dangers of the dark could not find her. If only she hadn't felt the need to go exploring. Maybe she would not be lost now. The filly's tiny wings would not be able to carry her into the air to escape the predators that she could only assume were tailing her right at this moment.
......
It hadn't started out this way. Fiammetta had managed to sneak off from under the watchful eye of her mother's familiar for a little bit of alone time. The young filly knew better than to even try to ask her sister to accompany her. She loved 'Lina ... but her sister would be flinching at every strange sound. Fia would have been driven back just to escape 'Lina's whimpering. There would have been repercussions for sneaking off and so Fia had gone alone. At first it was a grand adventure. The sun was shining through the leaves in the forest that she had decided to scope out. It created a magical world in which Fiammetta fashioned herself a ruler of. The filly spent hours exploring the small hidden places in the forested wood. Fiammetta was so wrapped up in her daydream that it was almost dark when she realized her unexpected predicament. Panic briefly took a hold of her mind as she struggled to pinpoint which direction she needed to travel in to reach home.
.....
Retracing her route had not worked. Fia realized too late that perhaps staying put would have been a better option. The filly had wandered too far from the original point of entry into the woods to recognize her way home.
....
'This is the end
Hold your breath and count to ten'
Fia's breath came out in shallow gasps. She was too winded to put up much of a struggle. Water crashed over her head once again causing liquid to get into her mouth. The swift current pulled her along and the filly found it almost impossible to get out of the middle of the river. Gasping once more Fia's entire body went under the surface. Her lost conscious thought was to fight her way back to the surface. At least in that way she would not drown. At least that was her last hope as her vision went black.
Feel the earth move and then
hear my heart burst again
for this is the end
I've drowned and dreamed this moment
so overdue I owed them
Swept away, I'm stolen
Fiammetta would eventually regain consciousness far from her home and family.
