Aisling flew along low enough over the grasslands that her wings sometimes brushed the taller growing blades. She was alone, having left her family for a short trip in the attempt to find new and interesting story fodder. Maybe she would discover new types of terrain or a hidden valley. Maybe it would be an interesting herd of dragon Soquili, or a lone wolf Soquili. She was open to anything because, quite frankly, she was running out of plausible things to use in her stories. Her brother had started to question what she was saying and her parents simply didn’t believe her anymore. This was unacceptable to Aisling. Everyone was supposed to believe everything she said.
Her last story had fallen completely flat. Something about a buffalo that spoke only in rhymes to her Soquli who spoke only in similes. The sad part was, that had actually been a true story. One of the few she ever had told. But the foal who cried snake never was one to be believed, though Aisling didn’t believe that. The foal was simply not convincing enough in her opinion. But to her chagrin, she had not been convincing enough and so here she was trying to figure out how to be more convincing.
At that moment in time, Aisling was singing to herself, quite loudly and rather strangely, changing keys and pitches seemingly at random mostly because she was bored. “…flyyying and sooooaring, round and round one goes.” She flew a little higher and did a barrel roll, and another, and then one more just because. “Up, Up, UP! Down, down, down! And arrrroooouuund! One more time.” Basically she was singing all the acrobatic things she was doing.
But that lost its appeal rather quickly for Aisling. So she decided to land and walk for a little while to rest her wings. The last spin in the air had put some strain on them and she didn’t want to risk injuring the wings. “One’s a cuddle, two’s a jolt, three for a mare, four for a colt…” Beginning to prance about in a silly way, because there was no one around after all, Aisling sung a little counting rhyme she had learned… she didn’t remember where. “Five for rivers, six will scold, seven for a secret, never to be tooooolllld! Thank you.” Aisling stopped and bowed. “Thank you. It was delightful to sing for you today.” After a moment she asked the air around her, “I wonder what the other numbers are for?” Coming up with an answer to that would be a diversion at least for a little while. “Eight for a dance? Nine for a song? Ten for a.. what? Eleven is loooooonng!”
