Well, her mom always said she did get her daddy's stubbornness.

Impossible, irrational, all logic be damned stubbornness.

A big ol' city, and she was out late at night trying to find one person who might as well have been a phantom with the way he had moved when she encountered him. That incident the other night bothered her something awful. She had thought about going to the police, but she just imagined getting laughed out of the department. A young woman, out late at night, apparently 'robbed' but nothing of value taken. Except something was! Nothing she could actually prove, but still!

Energy...or something like it! It was like something out of a fantasy novel, and if it hadn't happened to her, she wouldn't have believed it.

So yeah. She was walking around the city late at night, looking for that weird vampire? guy. Except she kind of learned her lesson...and in her back pocket, concealed by her flannel shirt, was a steak knife.

Hey.

It was better than nothing on short notice.

Aurostibite had not been back to the bookstore since the incident with the young woman - though he had gone back and picked up the books she'd thrown at him to lay them with her. He wasn't entirely heartless, even if she assumed he was. There was no extraneous killing; if he didn't have to do it, he wouldn't, and he hadn't needed to kill her then. And yanking starseeds didn't actually count, at least not in Aurostibite's mind. That was an experiment, after all, a task set to him by a fellow officer, and it was important for the research and development of Umber's proposal.

And truth be told, Aurostibite had no intentions and no concerns about running into that particular civilian again. There were thousands in Destiny City, after all; the chances of them meeting once more was slim to none, and he was out nightly working towards his goals. The promotion was so close he could practically taste it.

He was out pacing again, the patrol leading him down a darkened corridor between two buildings before he emerged on the other side, brows drawing together, an impassive expression on his face.

No power signatures, not yet. A good sign.

Deep down, in the back of her mind, a small voice of reason said it was a needle in a haystack. The odds of finding phantom vampire? guy hottie robber kinda were so low they were negative. But back to point A. Unreasonable stubbornness. She couldn't just sit at home and tumble OTPs and crack ships! This would consume her until she could resolve it somehow.

Right now she was shipping herself x optimism x determination. OT3 for the win.

That's why Olga too, was lurking down darkened corridors, because what better place for a vampire? kinda hottie robber maybe guy? Yeah. That's where they lurked--Wait. Were those footsteps ahead of her down this corridor? Olga tried channeling her Assassin's Creed stealth skills, even crouching to quiet her movements (because that's what you did in the game). There was someone up ahead--- maybe---

Well, for all she knew, it could be a heroin addict looking for a bit, and she was about to come up on him with a steak knife--hey wait.

Wait. As she drew closer, the silhouette became more clear, and she recognized that hat and that feather. Olga immediately bit her lip to stop from squealing with excitement. She was like the god damn Batman--

Minus that whole taking a bullet to the parents thing---

If he didn't catch onto her in time, the guy would find something sharp pointed into his back, and Olga behind him. "Found you, guy!" She cried, not bothering to be quiet now that she was so close to him.

He thought he heard footsteps - it didn't matter so much in the long run, because there was still no power signature to be felt, unless it was a youma creeping around. Aurostibite frowned a little, expression darkening, and took several paces forward, peering around a corner, his dark hair falling across his face and halfway down his back.

Something pressed into his back; he stiffened automatically, freezing in place. Shoulders tense, Aurostibite made no move to fight back, though the voice that yelled in his ears was vaguely, oddly familiar.

He lifted both hands, which were empty, in a gesture of submission.

"And why, might I ask, were you looking for me?"

She had this in the bag.

"That's a rhetorical question, right?" She asked, skeptically at that as her brows knitted briefly. "Wouldn't you want to look for something who threatened you with a knife and then--oh, drained you of something I guess?" She poked him a bit harder with the steak knife, not enough to pierce anything, just to let him know that she meant business.

"I told you I'd find you, yeah? What's your name, buddy?"

The more she talked, the more he slowly put the pieces together. It seemed ludicrous that a random civilian he'd energy drained before was someone he'd run into a second time - but it seemed this was exactly the case. And Aurostibite wasn't exactly afraid; she had something against his back, which could have been anything at all.

He kept his voice steady and calm, a single brow raising, although the girl wouldn't be able to see it.

"So you did," said Aurostibite mildly, lowering his hands back to his sides. "And maybe, maybe not. I don't particularly have your personality, so I wouldn't say that I would go out searching for someone a lot stronger and more capable than I am."

He lifted his chin a little, eyes narrowing slightly, body as tense as a wire.

"You still want me to give you my name when I can't even turn around to see you? How rude."

Actually, he didn't need to remind her that he, indeed, had some kind of serious advantage over her. She didn't know exactly the limits of that advantage, but she wasn't so stupid as to not know--still. She did feel emboldened, and not quite so threatened, by the gentlemen-like treatment she had received despite the...attack? Robbery? Weird encounter.

But she was persistent, stubborn, and a bit lot fool-hardy, and she wanted answers.

"Nah, rude is taking me out for the night on some kind of bad date and not telling me your name--" And she'd know about good dates. She wrote all about them all the time. "So, guy? What is it? And while we're at it---what did you do to me?"

Because letting him turn around and see her piddly steak knife wasn't all that appealing.

Aurostibite folded his arms over his chest, tilting his head back a little so that his dark hair fell in cascades down his shoulders. This was not entertaining, it was not helpful, it was nothing except positively irritating. She was a civilian, he was a Captain. He should do something about it.

Except not yet. He'd wait, he'd listen, he'd see what she'd try to do.

A snort escaped him, inelegant, but unable to be helped. "You clearly think much more highly of yourself than you should," said Aurostibite lightly, disinterestedly. "A date? sorry, miss, you're really the last thing I'd want in this life, and if that's your idea of a date, well, then..."

He sighed, an exhale of breath, almost sounding bored.

"You really expect me to give you answers while you're making me stand like this? Not hardly."

"Right back at you, guy--" Then she couldn't help but laugh a bit. "Oh lighten up, will ya? It's a joke!"

Though what was really funny was they she thought she could more or less hold him hostage with a steak knife at his back...and his...draining touch thing. "Yeah. I kinda do, actually--" Olga paused for a moment, staring at the back of his head as she weighed her options. She could let him turn around...but then she'd have to worry about that touching thing...

"If I let you turn, will you talk to me and---yanno---not make me go to sleep this time?"

Somewhere in the back of her mind, she was praising herself for taking this whole situation in stride, or at least she hoped she was.

She was starting to grate on his nerves. Normally, Aurostibite didn't pay two seconds of attention to civilians - most of them were just expendable energy sources, after all - but this one seemed to have either a much stupider or a much bolder state of mind. He couldn't quite determine which one it was.

A sigh escaped him, sounding somewhat long-suffering.

"No."

And he snapped around, pivoting with years of training to move with practiced ease, a hand shooting out. Gloved fingers caught the girl by her throat, and within seconds she was pinned against the wall. His grip was not tight enough to hurt, but secure enough to leave little room for doubt of his irritation.

"Sorry," said Aurostibite flatly. "But I don't make deals with civilians."

His gaze flicked disdainfully over her.

"Especially young ones."

Aaaaaaaaand yep. Yep. In over her head.

Olga had let out a startled yelp, and in the flurry of movement, which resulted in her being pinned with a gloved hand on her throat, had dropped her piddly steak knife. It clattered somewhere nearby like the cheap plastic and metal it was, and Olga heaved an internal sigh. So much for taking it in stride!

Though, despite better reasoning, she still wasn't too worried. Sure, he could probably snap her neck, stab her, or drain her? again, but...yeah. He could do any of those things and there wasn't a thing she could do right now to stop him. This she knew, and that's why she didn't struggle, and kept relatively cool. One hand reached up to grab his wrist as firmly as she could, just to hold onto him as he had her, and the other reached up to fist into the fabric of his uniform.

"Civilian, huh?" She echoed. "What, are you in some of military or something?"

His eyes flickered only briefly to the steak knife, a single brow arching. She'd thought she could take him on with just that measly thing, had she? Aurostibite couldn't help but kind of admire her courage, in spite of how little he appreciated the situation they were in.

His fingers flexed around her neck, and she would feel the soft beginnings of a drain, though it wasn't as heavy or intense as the other night. Aurostibite looked calm, almost relaxed as he stood in front of her, taller by at least an inch, though she was surprisingly close in height.

Her grip on him didn't bother him. His expression remained what it was.

"People who have no business in other people," said Aurostibite quietly. "Should not stick their noses where it doesn't belong."

"Hey--" Olga let go of his uniform and made a fist, with which she lightly thumped his chest. "Stop that! I know what you're doing!" Kinda. She guessed he sapped energy, considering the last time he grabbed her, she gradually fell asleep.

"Well, sorry for you, buddy--" Sarcasm. "But you made it my business when you sapped me the other night---and I'm sticking my nose right where it belongs!"

He tilted his head to the side, hat half shadowing his face.

"Do you?" Aurostibite asked lightly. "I mean, I suppose it's a little obvious that you feel the way you do, but you're far too nosy for your own good. Most people would learn to simply let nature take its course by now, you know. Instead you seem to find it a good idea to step out of line."

His grip tightened, just a little more, sapping a little bit more energy, still not too much

"And if there's anything I loath, it's people that don't do what they're supposed to."

"From the way you're talking, guy, you sound like a sheep--" She moved her other hand to grab his wrist, this time in an earnest effort to remove his hand from her throat with a jerk. "And that's a baaaaaaaaaaad way to live." She bleated like said animal.
