Black clouds hanging overhead were far from an unusual sight in the summer months. They’d appear every afternoon coming over the mountain peaks and at the height of the afternoon they’d split open and rain until they were either finished or had moved on. They were a welcome visitor most of the time. The chilled water falling from the sky could cut the heat dramatically and with the clouds blocking out the sun the sweltering summer days could become almost enjoyable. So long as a stray lightning strike didn’t set a dry patch of grassland or forest ablaze even a thunderstorm was usually pleasant.
That was not the case today. The clouds were far darker than they normally were and they rumbled with malicious intent. As soon as they had started building the world beneath had started retreating into itself, sensing that nothing good was going to come of it. Birds had taken up perches in densely leafed trees, rabbits had fled for hedges, and many of the larger animals had laid themselves down on the ground with their legs tucked beneath them to wait the storm out.

By the time the rains finally started pelting the ground most of the creatures in the area had found shelter. Jurou, the large tea colored stallion with strange inky markings, and his dragon partner Shouta were caught out in the open when it started. Jurou’s usually fluffy coat and mane plastered themselves against his frame within seconds and Shouta had started hissing and whining loudly to make sure that his disapproval of the entire situation was well known. The two were racing to a small cluster of rocks they had strolled past earlier when the clouds had first started rumbling their early warnings. They hadn’t thought much of it at the time but now both found themselves wishing that they’d had the good sense to get out of the path of the storm.
The two made it to the rocks in record time and tried to squeeze into the opening in the rocks that would give them shelter only to get stopped a quarter of the way in by something solid but also warm and squishy.
“Excuse me!” A startled, annoyed, and feminine voice called out right at the impact. Jurou took a step back to see what he had run into; it turned out to be someone’s dainty hindquarters. Jurou grinned; maybe the storm wasn’t so bad after all.
“You’re excused.” He replied with a smile. “Now if you don’t mind scooting into that cave a bit more my friend and I would like to get out of the rain.” If Jurou had been paying attention he would have noticed the petite form in front of him going tense, he would have felt the energy in the little cave turn icy and bitter, and lastly he would have seen the tail coming up like a whip to strike him across the face. Of course Jurou had been paying too much attention to the mare’s rear to notice any of it. He stumbled backwards after the blow to the raucous sounds of Shouta busting a gut.
“What was that for?!” Jurou demanded before watching in horror as the mare turned around. He finally saw the deep red scales and the bright red wings. He took note of the stained parchment colored scarf and the dark knotted hair on the top of the mare’s head. He saw the way her ears were pinned back and the way her crimson eyes were burning and he swallowed. “s**t.”
“Get out of here. Find somewhere else to hide.” Azami said bitterly. She remembered these two thugs and there was no way she would ever let them share her shelter. They had used up her good will last time.

A prolonged silence followed Azami’s orders broken up only by the steady pounding of the rain. The two soquili were focused on glaring at each other even though it was difficult for both of them. Azami was beginning to get a kink in her neck from looking up and between the sheets of rain pelting his face and his own sodden mane Jurou was having trouble seeing anything. Neither was willing to relent in this pointless contest of wills so it wasn’t surprising that neither noticed Shouta’s lithe form weaving between their legs to get into shelter. Or rather they didn’t notice until Shouta started cackling.
Azami turned her head back, alarmed to hear anything coming from behind her. It didn’t take long, however, for her shock to give way for indignant fury. “I told you to leave!” She shouted stomping her foot and turning her head back to face the stallion once more. She wouldn’t be budging on this point.
Unfortunately for her, Jurou wasn’t going to give her much of a choice in the matter. “Look Princess, either you scoot over and make room for the both of us or this won’t have a happy ending for you.” Jurou said. He was tired of being wet and cold and he was especially sick of dealing with this uppity mare. She had only ever been a headache for him and he had the distinct feeling that she would never be anything but a pain in his rear.

Azami took a step back hearing the threat. If it was possible for her face to have gone any paler than the white it already was it would have. Somehow this stallion always jumped to violence when he didn’t get his way. She swallowed and looked nervously between the two before planting her hooves on the ground. She wouldn’t back down, not this time, she wasn’t going to let this brute walk all over her. “I am not letting you in here. There’s plenty of other places to hide from the storm, go find one of those.” The words had seemed fierce in her mind but Azami could hear the panic in her own voice when she said them aloud.
Jurou just rolled his eyes. “Whatever. General, give the lady a push in the right direction.” The rain was starting to come down harder and all Jurou wanted was to dry off. If the mare wouldn’t share then he was just going to take what he wanted.
Azami didn’t get much time to wonder or worry about what was about to come her way. Before she had even fully registered what Jurou had said she felt the dragon’s claws pricking lightly against the skin on her rump before she was rudely and unceremoniously shoved out of the tiny excuse for a cave and out into the rain. It was her great misfortune that she was smaller than most creatures, even the stallion’s dragon friend was about her size and from the looks of things he was stronger too.
Jurou chuckled as he strolled past Azami and waltzed into his new shelter. “Nice to see you again.” He quipped to the mare unable to stop himself from snickering to see her hair plastered against her head and her wings drooping against her back. “I think I remember telling you to go home last time?”

Azami shivered in the cold rain. She had been perfectly comfortable up until the stallion’s appearance and now she found herself miserable. What was it about the male that seemed to always bring Azami grief? It was almost as though it was his sole purpose in life. Her dark red eyes narrowed as she watched him turn to his dragon to have a good laugh at her expense. She could see the dragon pointing at her and saying something that sent the stallion into a fit of laughter so strong that he felt the need to continuously strike at the ground with one of his hooves. It made Azami furious. If she had the ability she would have cursed the two of them to be haunted by mischievous spirits for the rest of their lives. Since she was incapable of such a feat, however, she settled for direct action.
In a matter of seconds she shrunk herself down to the size of a lizard, it was about as small as she could manage, and began the long run back toward the cave. Jurou saw this and started laughing harder. “You’re going the wrong way!” He shouted with humor. It faded away when he realized that she wasn’t turning back. “You’re not getting back in here, princess, and if you think you are you have another thing coming.” When Azami didn’t alter her course, Jurou rolled his eyes. “Alright, have it your way.” He muttered before planting his hooves firmly to block as much space as he could.

Azami had known that he would try to prevent her from entering again. It was the entire reason that she had bothered to shrink. With ease she slipped between Jurou’s hooves and back into the cave. Jurou growled and started shuffling his hooves about trying to kick the miniature mare back out into the cold. It wasn’t working, she was much too quick and he kept losing sight of her thanks to the long fetlocks he usually loved. At one point Azami got tangled in his soggy hair and found herself airborne when he kicked out with that leg. She beat her wings a couple times but they were too heavy to give her much lift. In the end she crashed into the dragon.
“Grab her, Shouta!” Jurou shouted angrily and within seconds Azami found herself trapped in Shouta’s long claws. By some luck her wings ended up jutting out between each of Shouta’s digits so that they were not crushed but the rest of her body was held tight. She squirmed to test the hold and even bit at the otter but it wasn’t much use.
“Think you’re clever dontcha?” Jurou asked bending down so that he could look Azami in the eye. Azami glared at him.
“Get out of my cave!” Azami demanded not caring at all for how pitchy and small her voice sounded in this size. It seemed to be having a positive effect on the situation, however, because while the Jurou merely rolled his eyes at her demands Shouta began laughing so hard that his hold loosened so that he could clutch at his belly. Azami took her shot and catapulted herself onto Jurou’s face to kick and bite at anything and everything that she could.

The next few moments were nothing but chaos as Jurou stomped around the tiny stone enclosure and Azami continued to pummel Jurou’s face with miniature hooves. Shouta was of no benefit to his soquili companion because seeing Jurou getting attacked by a flutter was only making him howl louder. The strange dance between the two soquili continued until Jurou, finally fed up with the attack, began to shake himself viciously. Azami went flying off into a stone wall before falling to the floor. As Azami shook her head to regain her focus she realized two things. The first was that Jurou hadn’t noticed that she’d already been flung off his head because he was still shaking. The second was that she’d been tossed as far into the tiny cave as she could get. Azami smiled.
“Perfect.” Azami said, smiling to herself. Shouta heard her squeaky little voice first and as soon as he noticed where she was he clambered up onto Jurou’s back to yank on his mane.
“She’s over there!” Shouta shouted pointing Jurou’s head in the right direction but before Jurou could do anything to stop her Azami began to grow.

It didn’t go as well as Azami had anticipated. She had thought that her growth would force Jurou back out into the rain. Instead Jurou had stubbornly planted his feet and pushed back against Azami even as she grew. In the end Azami reached her full, albeit still petite, size but with Jurou still in the cave the two ended up squashed up against the stone walls with a very large otter scrunched up on Jurou’s back. If things weren’t uncomfortable enough already all three of them were still varying levels of water logged.
Jurou was the first to attempt to move by taking a step towards the back of the cave. He could shift his leg around somewhat but it did him no good. Things were too tight for him to move forward. He could likely retreat but that was exactly what Azami wanted and there was no way he’d let the prissy little princess get her way. He’d won this cave from her already.
“You need to shrink or we’re both gonna be stuck here forever.” Jurou said trying once again to push his way past Azami but the kirin-flutter held her ground, not that there was anywhere to go.
“There’s plenty of room behind you!” Azami countered stubbornly. “Out in the rain, where you came from.” She could just barely wiggle about much in the same way that Jurou could. She knew that they could likely move if one was willing to give way but that certainly wouldn’t be her. She’d rather be stuck in a cave, that was steadily growing more humid and unbearable, than let Jurou have his way. Something about Jurou brought out the worst in her and it was somewhat alarming to the young mare how freeing it felt. She wasn’t worried about being a failure to her family, or behaving respectfully like she normally did. All she cared about was making sure that one stupid stallion didn’t get his way and that was a reward all on its own.

The trio of ridiculously stubborn fools fell into silence as it became clear that no one was willing to surrender the shelter. Neither Jurou or Azami were willing to acknowledge that they’d reached an impasse, however so it had turned into a game of occasionally kicking each other’s legs and shoving each other into the wall when shifting just in case someone changed their mind about how much the cave was worth. The only one left mostly alone was Shouta who had taken up a post closest to the exit to watch the progress of the storm.
In truth, the rain had almost completely let up and only the thunder really remained. There was no way Shouta was going to tell the two knuckleheads inside that though. It was too much fun watching Jurou get beat up by a mare half his size. They continued to butt heads and inflict small damages on each other in silence for the better part of an hour until Jurou finally snapped.
“Enough already! You stupid, psycho mare.” He growled pushing her into a wall a lot harder than he really intended. Azami wheezed as the wind was knocked out of her. A new tense silence settled between the two as Jurou watched Azami collect herself. His mouth was half open with an apology he probably should say but he really found that he didn’t want to. She’d had the chance to leave, she should have taken in. Jurou grit his teeth and turned his head away.
Azami watched Jurou’s reaction with curiosity. She hadn’t been hurt all that much, mostly he had just startled her since things had settled into more of a pissing match than anything else. He definitely looked like he thought he’d seriously hurt her though, and more surprisingly like he might actually regret it somewhat. That was strange for a stallion that spent so much time threatening her and making sure that she knew how small she was.

As Azami looked on she remembered something that her aunt had often told her. ‘Always know your audience and play it up for their benefit.’ Azami’s aunt had been the best medium Azami had ever seen. She always knew exactly when to add a bit of theatrics to help those who had hired her feel more at ease with the process. It must have been strange for so many of them to know that her aunt was speaking to the dearly departed. Her little shows always helped out and left the people with smiles.
Azami decided that now would be a good time to put that advice to use, even if it was very dishonest to do it in such a way. ‘Please forgive me.’ She thought as she let herself sink to the floor. It was easy to keep an eye on Jurou to watch his reactions, all she had to do was make her eyes wide and fearful and she could watch him all she wanted.
Jurou didn’t see Azami drop to the floor but he certainly heard it. He snapped his head back in her direction to see what had happened and found her staring at him like a doe cornered by a pack of wolves. Sure he’d pushed her, and kicked her, and tricked her, and yelled at her, and done all matter of terrible things to her both this time and during their last meeting but he hadn’t ever actually meant to hurt her. He’d just wanted to get rid of her.
Jurou swallowed and looked to Shouta for help just to find the dragon sitting with his front legs folded crossly. Jurou winced. When Shouta thought something was bad it was probably extra bad, there wasn’t much Shouta wouldn’t do after all.
“Hey… get up, you’re fine.” Jurou said trying not to sound worried. “It’s just gonna bruise is all.”
Azami was stunned that this was working, but she was also pleased. She made her lip wibble like a child’s might and pulled further away from Jurou. She was pleased to find that not only did this make the stupid stallion pull back but it also made his dragon friend smack his haunches hard.
“Jurou you idiot! You really hurt her! We gotta get out of here before her friends so up or some do-gooder passes by!” Shouta shouted continuing to beat on his partner. Jurou wasn’t sure he agreed with the statement, the mare probably didn’t have friends, but he couldn’t argue about do-gooders. Grimacing, Jurou backed his way out of the cave and fled with Shouta’s encouragement. The way he had always seen it he was going to hell, now he just figured he’d be going to a slightly deeper level.
Azami blinked when she found herself alone in the tiny cave again. “That worked?” She asked herself in disbelief. She got to her feet and moved to the entryway. There was no sign of Jurou anywhere. “That worked!” Azami smiled to herself and settled back into the cave. As frustrating as that stallion was he did lead her to some very interesting discoveries.
