Vederat mostly wears his emotions on his sleeves. If he’s happy, then you know it; if he’s sad, then you know it. If he’s angry, well, you get the point. Like most people who are quite so emotional, he does face teasing and outright bullying because of this emotional honesty, but no matter how hard he tries to hide his emotions, they keep bubbling back up to the surface. This leads to not-infrequent lectures about his temper; thankfully, he tends to express his anger verbally rather than physically, and as such he’s usually just in trouble for calling people names. He has not yet physically harmed someone, but he has sometimes gotten people in trouble, which does nothing to earn him friends.
It’s not like he tries to get them into trouble, either—in fact, he hates tattling. The reason for this is pretty simple—he wants friends. He wants friends and family, and has a burning desire to
belong in a group. He is blind to his own faults or virtues, and defines himself instead by who he hangs out with. As a result, as a child he will tend to befriend bullies and other nasty people. It’s not that he approves of their methods or what they do, but he figures that he will not be hurt if he hangs out with the bully, and then at least he has someone to hang out with and be accepted by. He knows that Imps are supposed to belong to a group, a family, or a cartel—he’s learned this from the many, many older Imps he has spent time with throughout his childhood. Vederat is worried that if he cannot wriggle his way into a group, then he will be a failure as an Imp and as a person, and he will be lonely for the rest of his life. He likes being an Imp, and doesn’t want to be a failure as one. This is a big part of why he’s such a miserable judge of character—he’ll look over all of your flaws if you’re willing to let him sit at your table during lunch. Over time, he will come to realize that he has more in common with the misfits who are being bullied, and he will turn traitor on his tormenting comrades.
He’s no fighter, though, and instead, he will use what has always been his greatest weapon—song. When he wants to be someone’s friend, he’ll write a song for them and play it on his ukulele. When he wants to court someone, he’ll do more or less the same thing. It might lead to confusion, but in this case, he frankly doesn’t care. He’ll use song against people he doesn’t like, too—songs about what mean people they are, or about their horrid deeds. He’s got a decent voice—nothing to swoon over, but nothing to scream at, either—but he’s getting better and better at the ukulele, and his songwriting skills improve with every passing day. The Serenade is the Swiss Army knife of this little Imp’s arsenal, and the day he won the ukulele at a carnival remains one of the most important days of his life.
It allowed him to find something he really enjoyed doing, and a way of expressing himself. It will help him make genuine friends and it helps him fit in with the rest of his house. It also helped him make serious connections with adults for the first time in his life--having never had parents, adults were sort of scary entities of authority before then, and now he sees them as people who are older than him and have their lives in order. (And, y'know, have more power than he has...but that's not really the point to him.)He learned to play music from one of the caretakers, who is kind enough to spend some time with him teaching him music and the ukulele in exchange for Vederat helping him out with the younger children in the nursery. He promises that he’ll teach Vederat how to play the guitar when he’s older; he’s super stoked about that!
Despite his occasional emotional outbursts and his tendency to run with the wrong crowd, Vederat’s reputation with his teachers is one of a student who writes everything down and has everything memorized by the day of the test. His grades are good, even if he’s not particularly memorable for class participation. His favorite class at the moment is language arts, mostly because he likes the writing aspect of it. He’s looking forward to the day when he can take even
more music classes! His second favorite would have to be, let me see, um…PE, oddly. He enjoys getting to climb up ropes and run around and swim. For a musician, he can be surprisingly active.
Vederat has no definite plans for the future, other than socially. He will likely become a songwriter and attend Grendel University; after that, he will attach himself to some pop or rock band, traveling around with them and writing songs for them. Groupies would not go unappreciated. He has joined Arkham House, and writes fight songs for them for every major occasion. In spite of this seeming house spirit, as a freshling, he will rarely associate with his fellow housemembers, preferring to stick with his “friends” regardless of house. But as a junior, when those tendencies start to break down, he will begin to branch out, meet other people of like mind, and slowly begin to relax. The air of creativity will allow him to participate in jam sessions with other musicians, and will allow him to develop a better sense of self and help him reform his ways.
Vederat has no prejudices towards any race, and doesn’t dislike any of them. He identifies very strongly as an Imp and is proud of his race and their history and culture.
