Rose Red grabbed her signature red hood and placed it over her hair. She kissed her grandmother goodbye, "I'm going to the market. I'll be back later." She said and left the house. Getting the market was easy. She walked around and bought all she needed putting it in the basket she had with her.
Rose heard rumors around the village people that there was a wolf stalking around in the forest. The few who knew of her and her grandmother living in the woods warned her as she left. She smiled and brushed it off. She had never seen wolves in the forest before. So she had no reason to fear.
Walking through the woods back was a little more difficult. The sun always went down when Rose was coming home and it was harder for her to see. She pulled out an apple as she walked and ate it to calm her nerves of the dark.

The wolf did stalk the forest, that much was true, but he hardly ever interacted with anyone. All the townspeople were . . .dull, frightened. All the same. But this girl was. . .well, she was different. Something about her smelled unique, and of course the red hood always caught his eye. The wolf always watched her from afar, but was always trying to hold back his curiosity when she could come to town.
Tonight, he planned on changing that. As she walked through the forest with the apple in hand, the wolf climbed down from the hillside he usually stuck too and followed after Rose Red. He sniffed the air first, huffed out the cold air then continued following after her quietly.

Rose kept walking eating her apple. She felt something itching at the back of her neck. Like someone was watching her, or following her. She shifted her arm on her neck a bit to try and see if it was just a crick in her neck giving her the feeling. When it didn't go away she stopped and just listened to the air around her.
True her hearing wasn't very good but it was quiet in the forest. She finally gathered her courage and turned around and saw, nothing. Sighing a bit she looked around, "What did you think it was Rose? A big bad wolf following you? Yeah right..." She said to herself and started to turn to keep walking.

The wolf had stopped moving when she turned around and crouched low before his ear twitched at her comment. Bid bad wolf? Is that what they where calling him? The wolf continued to walk after her when she moved, but froze again when one of his paws snapped a dried twig. He looked down with a growl at his feet before jumping forward to try and get into the treeline.
This girl was probably going to start moving faster hearing that, so he thought that maybe he could get ahead of her to try and keep up a bit.

Rose gasped when she heard the twig. She started to run not taking another moment to think. She ran as fast as she could moving her hand over her basket to lock the top lid so nothing fell out. She then did what her grandmother had taught her. She jumped into the first tree she could get to.
Climbing to the second branch she stopped and fell silent. She stared at the ground to see if whoever or whatever was following her would show itself under her very tree.

The wolf stopped when he couldn't see Rose anymore and looked around quickly. Humans can't just. . .vanish. And he could still smell her scent. The wolf walked over to the path to smell her footsteps and glanced around before trotting over to the tree she was in. He sniffed the bark and tilted his head before finally looking up at the girl.
Well. . . .that was pretty smart to avoid him like that. It was a first. But the wolf sat down and waited to see if she'd climb down or just stay until he walked away. In the light of the setting sun, it was easy to see that the wolf was an ashen grey color with a few scars. But he seemed to be much bigger than the average wolf seen around the forest.

Rose covered her mouth when she saw the wolf. She thought it would just pass by her but then it looked up. Right at her. Her eyes went wide and she was frozen. When it sat down she let out a breath and just watched it. Was it waiting for her to come down? What kind of smart wolf was this?
It was a lot larger than she thought a wolf should be so she bit her lip and took her apple core and threw it at the wolf. "Shoo! Get! Get out of here!" She yelled taking a few dried branches and tossing them down at him. "Shoo!"

The wolf flinched when the apple core was thrown at him, and blinked as she threw the dried branches. Not surprising that she assumed he was a dumb animal, but he was a little shocked that she didn't just scream or call for someone to help her. The wolf snorted lightly and sneezed when a bit of dust got to his nose before looking back up at Rose.
The sun was beginning to set, and the longer she was in the tree, the more danger she'd be in walking through at night. He huffed and looked around before running to the nearest brush to hide in, so she could climb down.

Rose looked at the wolf run off. She waited a bit then started to climb down. When her feet touched the ground she ran not taking a moment to collect herself. She jumped over roots and branches and glided through the forest. All she had to do was get to the clearing that was her house.
She saw it. It was there. When she broke the trees she laughed and kept running to the door. Opening it and going inside she panted a bit holding her hand on her heart, "I... I'm... Home!" She called out still panting from her run as she walked into the kitchen to put away the food she bought.

"Rose, where have you been?" Her grandmother called out and walked into the kitchen as fast as her cane could help her, "You were supposed to be home minutes ago. The sun was setting down, I was beginning to worry." She said then took the moment to look over Rose's state, ". . .my dear, what's wrong? Did something happen?"
Her grandmother reached to hold Rose's hand gently, while the wolf walked over to the small cottage and peeked in through the kitchen window, trying to stay low so the old woman or girl didn't see him right away.

Rose shook her head a bit, "I'm sorry Grandmother. I'm fine. I just thought I saw something in the forest. But there isn't anything out there." She said with a smile and started to put the food away. She didn't want to worry her grandmother. The old woman never left the house anyway so there was no risk of the wolf getting to her grandmother.
When everything was put away she started to cook dinner. She was halfway done when her eyes glanced at the window and she gasped seeing the face of the wolf watching her. She froze staring at it then looked back to her grandmother and bit her lip trying to ignore the wolf.

The wolf ducked a little lower when she saw him, but his ears twitched when she decided to ignore him instead. What a strange human this was. He breathed out lightly and continued to watch her movements, before ducking completely when her grandmother noticed Rose's sudden stiffness, ". . . .oh my dear. I know what's troubling you." She nodded and chuckled as she fiddled with her cane.
"The local post man from town came by here with the package I ordered, and told me to be wary of wolves around here. Is that what people have been telling you in town?" she asked and leaned back in her kitchen chair.

Rose looked at her grandmother and laughed a bit, "Grandmother there are no wolves in these forests. There hasn't been since before I was born. You told me that yourself." She said finishing up the cooking. She started to pour out some of the broth on the chicken she made and put the corn and green beans on the plate as well.
Rose walked around the table and set it up for the two of them with the plates and glasses of milk and apple juice. She sat down and smiled at her grandmother, "Dinner is served. I hope you like it. The chicken was fresh." She said.

"It looks wonderful darling. Thank you." She nodded and smiled for her granddaughter before taking a bite of the freshly cooked food. The wolf peeked in and felt his stomach tighten seeing the cooked chicken before whining and looking at himself. He sighed, knowing he had to eat sometime today. The wolf huffed and took off from the spot, racing away into the forest after the scent of a rabbit.
Rose's grandmother glanced to the window silently and looked to Rose before drinking a bit of the milk in quiet thought. She knew her granddaughter, and knew she wasn't telling her everything. But, she'd get the truth sooner or later.
