Aella hummed a little tunelessly as she busily shelved books from the cart she was pushing. It was a quiet day in the library, it seemed that no one had any overly pressing papers due and trying to do last minute research, a task that would have kept Aella tied to the desk as students constantly came up to ask her for lists of reference books or where a certain book was located. So today she was deep in the stacks returning books to their rightful place. A task some might have found mindless and boring, she found relaxing. Being among the stacks was like being at home. Many of these books she'd read and they were all like old friends.
Her fingers trailed along spines as she walked to the next section that was missing a book and as she picked it up she noticed a new book she'd never seen before. "Hello, there~" she said brightly picking up the book. It seemed to be a relatively new book on alchemy, and Aella turned it over in her hands and then opened it to read the dust jacket. Yes, this was a very new book only having been published last year. The author though, she knew from experience from another book of his was a bit of a windbag and overly full of himself. Oh well, it was something new to read, and while she doubt the pompous idiot would have gotten over himself, new material was new material.
She set the book on the end of the cart so she wouldn't shelve it and then continued on. She had to quickly pull the cart to a stop as she nearly careened into a Litch student who had just come around one of the shelves. Aella's wings rustled and she quickly squeezed around the cart to check on the other. "Are you okay? Did I hit you? I'm so sorry! You came around so suddenly! I didn't know there was anyone else down this way!" she bit her lower lip and waited for the other students response, and then something dawned on her. "Hey...you're that Litch from the Enoch common room...the one that lost their glasses! I remember you."

The period in the semester before classes kicked into high gear was the best time of all. The library was quiet and relatively abandoned, and it was around this time of the year that new books started to filter in. Zalir had more or less cleaned out zeir favorite sections of the library since they were a freshling, so this was the time of the year when zey was most likely to find something new. Last week had been all about chemistry--this week was all about alchemy. According to the news, one of zeir favorite authors on the subject had recently published a new book--this one on the transmutation of organic substances. It was sort of exciting, and the way the author would refer back to his earlier works gave Zalir a thrill of satisfaction--zey had, after all, read all of the previous books, and so understood the references.
The alchemy aisle was easy to find after so long spent reading there, so Zalir wasn't paying very much attention as zey rounded a bookshelf. Unfortunately, neither was the person walking down the aisle, pushing a heavy cart full of books! Zalir squeaked as the cart rammed into zeir hip, causing a dull pain to flood that side of zeir body, after a slight delay through Rot-dulled nerves. The Litch stumbled and fell to the floor.
Zey looked up at the person who had been pushing the cart--half-Fallen, half-Chimera, by the wings and tail. What was the cute term for that kind of hybrid? Chimen, or Fallera? Probably Chimen--Fallera sounded like a disease you contracted from contaminated water. "I-I-I'm o--kay. I, I, I'm sorry, I, um, I didn't sssssee you, I'm sorry!" Hands shaking, Zalir carefully pushed zeirself from the floor and into a standing position. Zey blinked at the comment, and peered at the student. Come to think of it...zey did know her. "Um, yes, th-that was me." Zey bit zeir lip. There was something zey had to say, but how to put it the right way? Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear... "Um, I'm, um, I'm sorry I ran away from you. I, uh, I was, um, I'm sorry." Zalir blushed, cheeks turning dark. "Um, I'm sorry."

As the other student fell to the floor, Aella had a very minor bout of panic and quickly knelt down next to them to check on their leg. She watched them get up and then followed suit, her hands balled into loose fists as she tried not to grip on the short skirt she'd worn today, it would most definitely end up slipping down, or hide in her wings. She almost made a move to steady them and wondered if they would get offended if someone they didn't know touched them. She knew some people didn't like their bubbles popped even if they were hurt.
At their apology, Aella shook her head. "No! It's okay! I don't really like being startled either when I wake up, especially by people I don't know." she bit her lower lip again and fidgeted. "Umm...that book you had, have you read the sequels? Did you know there are sequels? Lots of people I've met who've read it didn't know there were any. Granted they're not as good as the first book...they really shouldn't of written any sequels after the first one but you know...umm...Is your leg okay? Would you like to go back up front? I have a cold soda in Miss Lyra's mini-fridge and you could put on your leg? Might help reduce the swelling." she was rambling and she immediately shut up, otherwise the Litch might never get a word in edgewise.

Zalir saw that the other person--possibly a senior, possibly a young staff member--was trying to help zem up. Zey didn't push her away, nor did zey wave her away, but zey did keep zeir arms pulled in close to zeir body. It wasn't that zey didn't like physical contact, it was just that...Well...it wasn't easy to explain. It was just a thing, okay? Zey preferred to stand up all on zeir own. Zey dusted off zeir jeans and sweater, in the process touching the spot on zeir hip. Oh, dear. That was going to bruise for sure. Self-consciously, zey stopped rubbing the sore spot. Zey was being watched.
"Um..." That incident had been some weeks ago, and Zalir found zemself struggling to remember the details of the incident. Which book had zey been reading? Something, it must have been a novel. Zey normally didn't read novels, but that one had looked particularly tempting. So it was probably...? "Oh! Um, yes, sorry, I, uh, forgot which book I was reading. I remember now! War on the Crown. Um, no, actually, I didn't know there was a sequel. It seemed pretty, uh, self-contained. Didn't seem like much need for sequels." Zalir wasn't sure zey wanted to read any of the sequels if they weren't as good--the first book had been quite good, and mediocre sequels to a good book were always disappointing.
"My leg's okay," zey added. "It's going to be bruised, but other than that... Um...Miss Lyra's the librarian, um, so if you don't mind my asking, um, who are...? What I mean is, you obviously work here, and I thought I knew who worked here, and, well, I was, um--never mind." Zey hugged zemself, cheeks burning in shame. "Never mind, it's not important."

"It really didn't need one." Aella agreed and then bit her lip again watching the other. Oh she'd really messed up this time. Would Miss Lyra ban her from helping since she injured another student? Granted it had been an accident and accidents happened, but...
Her brain railed at loosing the only job she was good at and she clenched her fists again trying not to cry. Her wings trembled slightly and her tail curled around her feet protectively. "Are you sure?" she asked glancing up at them. "I just...I want to make sure it'll be okay, which is why I suggested putting the soda against it...it might help?" she didn't even know right now she looked back down at her booted feet.
There question into who she was didn't even bother her. She was more used to people not knowing who she was than knowing so it didn't surprise her that yet another student who, she thought was in her age group didn't remember her. "Aella..." she said quietly. "I'm Aella...I'm a junior, but I also help out in the library after school, on weekends and during breaks. I'm kind of...the student librarian?" she glanced up and tried to smile then stopped and looked back down at her feet. "And a walking source for where to find the best books on just about any subject." she laughed but it was a derisive sound and she shuffled.
"Will you at least let me push you back up to the desk on the cart so you can sit in one of the armchairs up front?" she asked indicating the book trolley. That was against the rules but she was more worried that the Litch's leg might suffer more damage from continuing to walk, and no one was likely to see them anyway. She turned teal eyes up at the Litch and tried to convey how absolutely sorry she was. "Or is there anything I can do to make it up to you?" she asked.

Zalir blinked and stared at the other student. Her wings were twitching and her tail was pulling in close, and she was looking at her feet, and she was generally giving the impression that she was...uncomfortable. Zalir bit zeir lip and tried to figure out what to do. What had zey done wrong? Why was she so upset? Had zey interrupted her schedule, or distracted her from something? Or was this about zeir hip? "Honestly, I think it's only bruised. I can still walk, it's not bad." Zey was overcome with the desire to check the bruise, but that would, ah, require pulling zeir pants down somewhat. That would have to be dealt with later, unless zey were to walk behind a bookshelf to check, but even if she couldn't see zem, zey weren't comfortable with that. "Um, if you'd like, I could walk with you back to the front, but I don't think the cart will support my weight. I don't want to break it, or make it difficult to push. Really, I can walk."
Zey pushed a strand of orange hair out of zeir face. Most people didn't really know zem either. Zey wasn't even sure if other people knew zey existed. "I'm Zalir," zey said. "Student librarian, that sounds like a really neat job. Um, do you get a lot of people coming in here, asking questions? Probably...more during exam times, I guess." Zey swallowed. Small talk like this was not really zeir thing. Zey never knew quite what to say.
"Really, Aella, it was just an accident," zey said firmly. Those eyes were big and intense, and zey had to look away. "It's okay, it happens a lot. I was being quiet, and I should have heard the sound of the cart. Um, it was just as much my fault as yours." Zey hesitated, though. A favor? To make it up to them? "Um, if you still, um, want to make it up to me, um...could you...if the library ever gets a copy of Silio Aurelio's latest book, On Materials Organic, um...maybe you could...reserve the copy for me?" Zey blushed furiously. "I really like that author, and I've been looking forward to it for months, and, um, I just, um, yeah."

Aella looked up at them. "If you're sure. I just...I've never hurt anyone before and I just...I feel awful. I'm so sorry." she glanced over at the cart and then back to the Litch. They looked light and the cart did carry around...a Ton of books, but if they were sure. "If you're sure." she said. "Umm...yeah we better go back up front." she said and started to try and push the cart back up the aisle. It took a few seconds but she finally got the proper momentum and the cart began to trundle along.
"I enjoy it! A lot actually." she said still straining a bit from getting the cart moving. She straightened up a bit now that the cart was moving along without too much effort. "Yeah, actually! It can get really busy around here. Luckily I know were just about everything is, so I can direct people to the right sections, or just outright tell them what books they should look at. Gets complicated though...when more than one person needs the same book and we've only got a couple copies. That's what I was doing in Enoch that night actually...I was dropping a book off to a Senior who needed it for an end of summer class project. We only had one copy and someone else had it almost all session." the cart reached the end of the shelves and she carefully turned it to angle it back up towards the front.
"I can still feel bad...this thing is heavy, and it must have hurt like heck." she said and then had to pause. "You like Aurelio!?" she tried to keep the incredulous tone out of her voice but it was there none the less. "Sorry, I read his last book and it was..." she stopped. Zalir was entitled to their opinion. "Sorry...I just really think Chalven is a much better author and alchemist."
Once they reached the desk she reached down and picked up the book that was sitting on the end she'd been pushing from. "Here's the book! I found it while I was shelving some others. I was actually going to check it out myself and read it when I went back to my dorm this evening, but if you want it first, that's okay! You seem to really like alchemy."

Zalir stared at Aella. She'd never hurt someone? "I, um, I've hurt a lot of people. Never on purpose! But, um, yeah, I tend to hit people with frisbees when I throw them wrong, or balls, or I run into them. It's, um, no big deal, unless the person makes it a big deal? Or if they have to go to the hospital. But I'll be okay, I don't need to go to the hospital." Mentally, zey added, I think. The worst thing about being a Litch was never quite knowing whether or not you'd hurt yourself badly enough to need serious medical attention. You might think you'd banged your ankle only to find out that it was broken after you stumped around on it. Pain wasn't completely blocked out by the Rot, but it was still hard to tell what sort of pain was a problem and what sort was irrelevant. Zey had had trouble with that before, but zey was certain that it was just a bruise this time. It had happened before.
Zey followed Aella as she pushed the cart back up the aisles, walking gingerly beside her. "Aren't there rules about keeping books for too long? Or are the rules different for projects? I remember a few times Miss Lyra got mad at me for an overdue book. Well, maybe not mad. She seemed pretty annoyed, though." Zey reached out idly with one hand to touch the spines of the books on the bookshelves. Some were dustier than others, as though they had not been touched for years; others had spines that were bent and broken and falling apart, the sign of a well-written book--or at least one with funny pictures in it.
Zalir didn't respond to the weight of the cart except to grunt, but Aella's outburst caught zeir attention. She was incredulous? Why?! How could she act like that?! "Aurelio uses precise language and doesn't expect his readers to be dumb!" zey snapped back. "He respects his readers enough to remember basic facts he wrote about previously! Sure, he tends to repeat himself and a lot of his references are personal anecdotes, but he's been an alchemist for so long that of course he mostly references himself, there isn't much else to reference!" Zalir pushed zeir glasses back onto zeir face and sniffed. "Chalven is...okay. She has a good voice, but she tends to be more...um, well, how can I put it? I think she writes more for non-alchemists than for the rest of us."
It took a second, but zeir brain did eventually catch up with zeir ears, and zey blushed furiously. "I mean, I'm not an alchemist, of course, but, um, I'd like to be, and Chalven's a good writer, you're right, I just, um, I prefer Aurelio." Zey pushed zeir glasses back up zeir nose again. "There's nothing wrong with liking Chalven," zey added. "I like reading Chalven. But, um, I prefer the depth of Aurelio's writing. Um. Which isn't to say Chalven isn't deep, but she tends to not get as full into it as Aurelio?" Zey brushed hair out of zeir face. "But anyway."
Zey sat down in a chair and covered zeir face with zeir hands. Zey'd blown it, zey knew it, and now zey'd yelled at someone who was being awfully nice, and zey'd yelled in a library!! How could zey be so thoughtless?! "I'm sorry I yelled at you," zey mumbled. But then zey blinked and looked up at the book being offered. Slowly, so that zey could be sure zey were not snatching it, zey took the book from her hands. "Yes, I do love alchemy. I, um, I love chemistry, too, but I can't really choose between the two. They're about as similar as magic and science can get, so, um, it's a tough choice. Thank you!" zey added.

"I try not to get involved with things that might require me to be overly...umm...social." she said after a moment. Her hand eye coordination was abysmal, she wasn't the fastest runner, and she had a tendency to trip over her tail when she was in a hurry, and most sports required to you to be in a hurry so Aella faceplanted a lot.
"You'll go see Miss Yuki, the nurse, if it gets too bad right?" she asked giving them a look. She figured the Litch would, but some students could be so stubborn about going to see the school nurse.
Aella nodded. "There are, but they kept re-checking it out the instant they had to turn it back in. I almost think they were doing it on purpose, it wouldn't be the first time someone's check out a good number of books to keep them away from someone else." Aella giggled just a bit. "Miss Lyra can be a bit prickly at times." she said. "But she's also really nice once you get to know her."
Aella sighed. "He's a pompous a** who's more interested in showing off than actually doing any actual work. Did you know half his 'theories' in his last book were actually discredited? And of course he only references himself, he holds most other alchemists in contempt. Yes, he expects his readers to be intelligent, but he also shows a surprising amount of venom towards anyone who isn't on 'his level.' Not to mention, he rambles trying to show off how 'worldly' he is, even though no one asked or cares. He's a windbag."
She huffed, feathers ruffling a bit. "Yes Chalven's public work is very easy to read, and more simplistic, but she has to be, she works on the staff that writes alchemy text books. However if you go read any of her actual scientific journal articles? She's a far more versatile and respected practitioner of the art than Aurelio." she turned to look back at the cart. Didn't think Chalven was deep huh? Well she'd show them. She knelt down to another shelf and scanned the line, she was nearly certain the book she was looking for had needed to be shelved. Ah, there it was. She picked up a hefty well worn book and offered it to the Litch. "Don't think Chalven's deep? This is the first book she wrote, and it got her elevated to the elder ranks of the Royal Alchemists. Give it a try?"
Aella blinked owlishly at the sudden apology. "I...you didn't yell at me. We were just having a debate. I don't mind having a debate with someone. I rarely get to do it actually. I have problems talking to people...so I rarely find anyone as opinionated as me." she shrugged a bit and offered a half smile. "Sorry I got a little heated." she then offered out an olive branch. "I know a couple good books about chemistry too, if you want them."

"Most of the time when I accidentally hurt someone, it's during PE. There's, um, not a lot you can do to avoid that. Not really, anyway," zey added. "Professor Persephone's...not the worst, but she still expects participation, so it's...um, not really possible to sit things out all the time. Or...any of the time, really." Zey shifted and nodded. "Yes, of course I'll see the nurse." Ha, no, probably not. Zalir hated going to the nurse--it was always uncomfortable for zem, and besides, it wasn't a big deal. "I'll go to the nurse straight away if it's serious." Which it wouldn't be. Zey started rubbing the sore spot through zeir jeans just to make sure.
Zalir shook zeir head. Zey hadn't heard of such behavior, but honestly, it wasn't surprising. If the world of adult academia was fierce, the realm of student scholars could be downright brutal sometimes. So much spite flying back and forth. "That's a pretty lousy thing to do," zey said. "Not really surprising, though, I guess. Aren't there rules or something? Or could you put up a waitlist, so that there's a cooldown period between rentals? Or something?" Ideas began to form in zeir head. Zey weren't a member of library staff, though--so how could zey have any input on the matter? It was just common sense, both the solution and the barring of the Litch from solving that problem. But there were more important things at stake.
"Yes, he is pompous. And yes, many of his works have been discredited--but it's not like Chalven's record is all that good. She got suspended from the elders a few years back for falsifying data, so her respect is a little thin in some quarters, and I'm not talking about Aurelio supporters, either. My trouble with Chalven, though, is that the things she says are all too obvious. She doesn't say anything new in her books--" However, zey were interrupted mid-rant by the appearance of a well-worn book. Hullo, what was this? Zey adjusted zeir glasses and accepted the offered book. "I don't think I've seen this one on the shelves before," zey said. Zalir thought zey had seen every book their library had on alchemy. "Is this a library book, or is it, um, from a private collection?" Zeir mind was racing. Two books zey hadn't read, in the same week? This was almost too good to be true... and even if the Chimera/Fallen was exaggerating her favorite author's skills, zey was still curious about the ardor for an author zey had long since dismissed.
Maybe, if zey liked it, zey would see about finding some copies of the Royal Journal of Alchemy. A subscription was far too expensive for zeir modest allowance, so zey had rarely had an opportunity to read it. University libraries might have copies of those scholarly journals, but the student library here was geared towards a totally different audience. Zey had never seen any scholarly journals of any kind here. Zey adjusted zeir glasses once again. "Thank you, Aella," zey murmured. "I think I will check out both books."

"Oh I hate PE." she said with a resigned sigh. "Miss Persephone is nice, and I don't think she expects more out of us than we're prepared to give, but it's still frustrating." her wings dropped a bit and then she nodded. "Okay. Thank you."
"It is, but there isn't much we can do about it. We try to enforce the 'two checkouts in a row only' rule but what do you know, sometimes someone will bring a friend have them check out the books and continue to withhold them from whoever it is they're mad at. Kids can be such dicks sometimes!" she frowned deeply, her hands going on her hips, as if she wasn't a student herself. "I always surrender a book I'm reading if someone actually needs it." she said with a tail swish.
Aella folded her arms over her chest. "Which was proven to have been done by one of her lab assistants who was riding her coat tails on the paper. They wanted the bump to their career a successful paper would bring. You don't get famous for failures after all." okay, she had to give them that, but honestly no one was making astounding breakthroughs in alchemy of late, and anyone who claimed to have done so generally got their theories trashed. "Aurelio isn't saying anything particularly new, either, ya'know." she shot back rebelliously. "Honestly I think it's dangerous territory he's in, trying to do organic transmutations...The restrictions were only loosened up ten years ago after all, but no one's been particularly willing to publish anything on the subject...Signs would then indicate that it doesn't go well or as expected."
She let the Litch take the book from her. "It was in the archives until recently. I pulled it out when I realized it should really be on the shelf. I read it twice over the summer, and it's only going back into circulation this semester." she said. "I think they were worried about the condition of the spine, but I took it to the Enchanting teacher and they reinforced the spell on the binding."
Aella smiled a bit, and her tail swished softly against the carpet. "I can handle that for you." she said moving behind the check out desk.

"I'm...not entirely certain I've ever met someone who likes PE. And I feel like even though she says she doesn't expect much...she still expects too much. At least...I don't think I've ever done anything to her satisfaction." Zey blushed, but it was nice to meet someone with whom zey could complain about physical education. Physical education...except when they were learning about health or first aid, zey didn't feel like it was properly education at all.
"I've never had to surrender a book, but I know I would. Um, unless I thought that person would never give it back. Then, um, I probably would hoard it...but, um, only if I could find someone else to help me. Not...something I'm very used to." Zey wasn't sure if zey could trust anyone to help keep a book away from someone unsavory. Well, maybe Vaden, but even then, he would probably balk at such unseemly behavior. He didn't seem to be the type who would hide a book to keep it safe. Would probably deem it unethical.
"She should have reported it sooner," zey said stubbornly, "instead of waiting to be confronted over it. And no, Aurelio isn't doing anything new, but some of the stuff he's writing about is stuff that no one is interested in talking about." Zey picked up the latest book and jabbed a claw at the cover. "This isn't a book about experiments, it's a book about theories, about possibilities that can be made in the advancement of fields such as, say, medicine. He's done a few experiments, sure, but none of them have been particularly drastic." Zey turned the book over and stared at it, thinking. "Actually...this is probably his way of trying to obtain more funding. Should still be interesting, though, from an academic standpoint, I mean. As should this one." Zey laid zeir hand on Chalven's book. It did, indeed, look pretty badly beaten up, but it was, what, twenty, thirty years old? And though zey would be loathe to admit it, Zalir couldn't be the first student interested in alchemy. "I'll take good care of it, nonetheless. I don't want to be the one to break a spell--or a good book."
Zey handed both books back to Aella and watched her check them in, rubbing at zeir hip again to get the circulation going.

Aella laughed a bit. "Me either to be honest, but you know...it's not that bad. Trying to teach children hand eye coordination, teamwork, perseverance, and that there's a time and place to be competitive isn't a bad thing. Just wish we could get a lecture on it instead of having to put it all into practice." she sighed.
Aella shrugged. "I can understand keeping a book if it's your book, but if it's a library book, you don't own it anymore than the next person. Even if you know they're going to be horrible, you don't have the right to keep knowledge from someone, especially if they need it for class." she sighed and ran a finger against the wood of the desk. She was obviously familiar with the rough condition some books returned in after getting loaned out.
"She didn't know the numbers were fudged until someone else ran the experiments and couldn't get the same results. As long as the numbers are within the right tolerances how would you tell bad results from good? Should she be keeping back up experiments somewhere, just to make sure someone isn't tampering with them? That's a pretty bleak and outlook to have on the people you hand picked to work with you, that you trusted. It's horrible they did what they did, but you can never know everything about a person." she sighed looking off towards a spot in the ceiling, wings drooped, and her tail still, she looked back at the Litch and snorted. "Of course it's a ploy for funding. They're also not 'theories,'" she said a little rebelliously. "Theories have to be proven, they're just hypothesis, until then."
Aella smiled just a bit. "Sorry, my temper again, and don't worry about the Chalven book. The spell is brand new and you'd have to do something ridiculously drastic to break a brand new spell like that." she happily took the books and wanded them. "Can I have your student number or id, please, Zalir?"

Zalir nodded. "Those are all important things to learn, but I wish they didn't come with running. I would like PE a lot more if I could breathe during it. I heard that we get to start learning first aid as juniors--that might be more interesting. I'm, um, actually sort of looking forward to it. It will be...well, not fun, but at least, um, potentially useful in the future."
Zey sighed. "Maybe some people shouldn't be allowed to check out books." But then zey made a face. "I guess that doesn't solve the problem at all, though."
Zalir pulled out zeir ID card from zeir back pocket and handed it to Aella. "It's not easy to know if there are fudged results. I guess she could have supervised her assistants more, but my point was more that nobody's practices are perfect, and everyone can have something bad said about them. Um. Well, okay...that was only sort of my point. My point was also why I'm a little, um, suspicious about Chalven." But then Zalir had to roll zeir eyes. Zey heaved a heavy sigh. "Fine. Hypotheses. You knew what I meant, right? I mean, you can't say 'hypotheses' to most people, they don't understand what that means! I meant theories in the general, layperson's sense of the word." Zalir squeaked. "Um, I didn't mean to be rude, I'm sorry, Aella..."

"Considering all they teach us as kids is go find a caretaker or a teacher? Yeah, that should be interesting. Although, I'm sure a good portion of it will be still 'go find a caretaker or a teacher.' Some things only change so much after all."

Aella took the card and scanned it with the wand, verified the info that pulled up and then confirmed the check out sliding it and the books back across the desk to Zalir. "Everyone screws up sometimes, and trusts someone more than they should. That's life. Unavoidable." she looked a little embarrassed at the Litch's tone, but took the brunt of the assault without flinching. She had started it with her tone and comment after all. "It's okay. I started it, kind of...for no reason. I knew what you meant, but," she sighed. "I was being a brat. I'm sorry too," she offered a smile trying to show no hard feelings, right?
