Where: The Dark Swamp
When: During a quiet period...

I am so sorry for the dumb name.

      [+] Kursha Vidari

Keeping low and moving fast, Kursha pressed west through the swamp. He zigzagged north and south at regular intervals. Reeds lashed against his sides and mud splashed up over his boots as he ran. He looked no better than when he had staggered out of the caverns. His hair hung limp over his back, his clothes were drenched with sweat, and his breath was beginning to leave him in short bursts. He had been run ragged. The hot swamp air offered no relief for his burning lungs. On the bright side, most of his wounds remained closed, so he was not at risk of bleeding out. He might have been at risk of dying from sheer exhaustion however. He had spent the past two nights relentlessly pursuing the remainder of the rebel forces. With nothing to go off of but the knowledge that the coast was at his back, he had the whole eastern half of swamp to cover. So he pushed himself to his limits. Beyond them. It seemed that one way or another, he was drawn to self-destruction. But there was no alternative.

The captured rebels had been a decoy—even with his fumbling, sleep-deprived reasoning he could work out that much. They had split up to distract him from his real goal. There was no other reason he for him to have caught Byakko so easily. No other reason she would have responded in the way that she did. But Kursha was not deterred. He had a mission to carry out. While everything else may have fallen apart, he still stood a chance to redeem himself. He just had to succeed in this one thing: killing the mother grub.

Regina's orders had been clear. Eliminate the mother grub. Make it look like an accident. Unfortunately at this point, an accident would be difficult to manufacture. But such measures would not be necessary. There would be no witnesses to tell otherwise.

The rifle bumped against his back. It was heavier than his old gun but Kursha hardly felt it. He hardly felt anything any more. Not the pain from his injuries, not his weariness, not even the anger he stoked to keep his will burning. The journey and all its trials had rendered him numb. Maybe that signified he was near his end. The flock of mosquitoes that chased him like a shadow of death seemed to think so. Or maybe they just knew an easy meal when they saw one. Either way, it meant nothing. All of his being was focussed on the horizon where his target awaited him.

Literally, as it turned out.

Kursha drew to a stop, squinting at the dark shape in the distance. His pupils flickered and after a moment the shape became clear. It was the mother grub, being carted along in a wagon along with all her spawn. Kursha straightened. Unslinging the rifle from over his shoulder, he moved across the field to intercept the caravan. He stopped at a dry patch. Gun lowered, he waited. It would only be a matter of time before they saw him. Let them. Three nights of hell was enough. The games were done.

The tealblood had long since settled in with the rest of the rebellion. He didn’t have any explanation for his reappearance, and he didn’t need one. He was here to protect the cart and its precious cargo. There was a certain amount of uncertainty where he would end up when everything was said and done. But now, at least, he wasn’t content with being consumed by the swamp. There were trolls waiting for him to come home, somehow. He’d deal with his charges later. Traian would hear of this.

The cart rattled across the ground, and Ganyma made another round from his position on the west side of the grub. He scanned the horizon carefully. The trail was leading out into a more sparsely wooded path in the marsh, at the very least. It would give them less cover, but easier travel. Ganyma stepped forward and took his place in front of the grub, walking a great distance away to check for intruders in the glade. Sure enough, orange horns appeared in the distance. A rebel? No. Ganyma’s bloodpusher went into overdrive. Kursha’s form was wrapped, bloody and beaten, but it was unmistakeable. If Ganyma could see him, then he could see Ganyma. “Hunter!” He roared. Ganyma darted into thick rushes, boots sinking deep into the wet of the swamp. He could not assume that Kursha would monologue before taking fire. He had to act quickly. He could draw his fire from the Mother Grub – protect her and her brood. This time, Ganyma was prepared. The Coliseum, Luxara, and his subsequent training had prepared him for this exact moment. Focused eyes scanned the trees and foliage.

It was not until he heard the voice that he saw the figure racing towards him. Deep beneath the layers of accumulated numbness, Kursha felt a stirring in his bile sack. He knew that voice. He recognised that silhouette. His pump biscuit clenched, overtaken by a sudden flash of heat. A raw, tight feeling settled in his digestive cavity. Like a hot iron it steamed his insides, until it boiled over.

Of all the worthless, meddling...

Every hair stood on end. His body turned rigid. Lips curled to show his clenched teeth. His placid expression transformed into a snarl. Around the barrel of the gun, his fingers were white. Not once had Ganyma crossed him, not twice, but three times. Three times the tealblood had interfered and come out on top. Three times Kursha had been robbed of retribution.

Absolutely unforgivable.

That it seemed was not enough though. Crushing his pride, stealing his vengeance, and shedding the proof of his significance had not been enough for Ganyma Callow. He also had to obliterate Kursha's one chance for redemption, destroying everything he had worked for. There was no use pretending otherwise. Ganyma would only find satisfaction in Kursha's ruin.

Kursha's hands trembled. It was so selfish. He had never heard of anything so selfish. Ganyma was motivated not by any desire to win or any moral obligation, but by pure spite. Spite for Kursha. The realisation tapped deep into the root of Kursha's anger. Ganyma did not understand. Or maybe he did and he just didn't care.

How dare you... How dare you!

Kursha did not remember firing the first shot, the second, or the third. One moment he had stood there, captivated by rage as the tealblood barrelled towards him, and the next he was feeling the heavy bite of the recoil in his shoulder. He drew in a shaky breath. The sound of gunfire rang in his ears. Yet Ganyma was still coming.

A shot rang out next go Ganyma's head. He had the sense enough to duck, and flatten against the ground. s**t. If Kursha saw the movement of him running, he'd have a track on him for sure. He could only risk waiting for him to turn his attention away for just a moment before he ran again.

Time passed, and Ganyma's bloodpusher finally calmed back to its normal state. If he could get the height to climb into the trees and push Kursha back, he would be able to take him down from above. But if Kursha got bored -- he might fire at the Mother Grub. There were too many possibilities. Ganyma could only assume what he knew - that Kursha's hate would lead him to targeting Ganyma first.

In the meantime, Ganyma slowly rose from his prone position. He crawled through the muck carefully. Any moment, and those pupils would see his position. Risking the wait was deadly.

Suddenly the tealblood dropped out of his sight. Clenching the rifle tight, finger itching against the trigger, Kursha surveyed the rushes. All seemed still, ordinary. Then there was a flicker of movement among the reeds. Out of reflex he fired. A jet of water sprayed up where the shot landed. Kursha let out a hiss. The reeds continued to sway in the breeze. Pump biscuit pounding, his gaze darted to and fro.

“Were you going to fight me or not, you coward?” he screamed. No reply. The swamp was quiet. With the sharp retort of gunfire, all the birds and insects had fallen silent. Only an occasional gust of wind rustled the reeds. Kursha grit his teeth. Lowering his gun, Kursha pried four cartridges off his bandolier and began to reload. Each one slid into place with a mechanical click. When the tealblood finally decided to show himself, he would be ready. In the meantime... back to business.

“Fine, be that way,” Kursha muttered to the wind. Some of his temper had cooled. He brought the stock of the rifle to his shoulder. Now, where had that mother grub gone? Of course. There it was; that unmistakeable dark spot in distance. Closing one eye, Kursha took aim. His breathing turned slow and steady. To draw Ganyma out, he had pick a different target. Pretending was not enough though; he had to mean it. Anyway, that way he could kill two birds with one stone. At the very least, one grub with one bullet. Ganyma would likely take considerably more.

The barrel of his rifle levelled out. A loud crack cut through the air.

There was no time to wait for Kursha to open up – it was either now, or the Mother Grub was done for. Ganyma cursed under his breath and shot out of the underbrush. He was too late to get a hit in, but not enough to barrel into Kursha from the side and knock the gun out of position before it could damage the broodmother. He shook from the small but sturdy impact and tried to brace himself for what was to come. There was no telling what Kursha could do at this range; the best that he could manage to retaliate was to hope for the best and be as evasive as possible.

To say that Kursha had been surprised by the attack would be a mistake. Annoyed? Certainly. But surprised? Not a chance.

Arms waving as his balance was thrown, Kursha staggered to the side, towards the water. His left boot slipped down into the mud. He dug his heel in with a squelch and reversed his momentum. The minute he fell into the swamp water, he was done for. Against a close range opponent could not fight unless he had some traction.

Twisting to face Ganyma, Kursha readied the stock of the rifle against his shoulder. As tempting as it was to engage him in melee, he knew the end result. They both grappled for the gun, Kursha lost out, and then Ganyma pummelled him. It had happened too many times for Kursha not to learn something from it. He had to get as many shots in as he could before that moment. Because without his weapon he did not stand a chance. It had been such a ******** bad idea to give his knife away.

There was no time to dwell on past mistakes though. Relying on his instincts to guide his shot, he pointed the muzzle of the gun in the direction of Ganyma's shoulder. Disable the arms first, then the legs, and then plant a bullet in his skull before the regeneration kicked in. All the while, work to maximise his distance. His entire thought process occurred in less than half a second. He squeezed the trigger.

In the flash and crack that followed, Kursha did not wait around. Lowering the rifle, so that it was out of immediate arm's reach, he attempted to step around to Ganyma's right.

“Nngh!” Ganyma was hit. He cursed under his breath. The only option now was to disarm Kursha and lock him in before he could take a step back. The tealblood winced against the sharp sensations in his shoulder. He had braced himself. He couldn’t feel himself putting his flesh back together yet, and it was cutting at him. He had to wait – there was no telling what else Kursha could deliver.

He swept towards Kursha, bringing his arm into the greenblood’s torso. No tricky play with his gun yet – with any luck he’d knock some wind out of his foe and buy time to do more damage. That was the hope.

Even as Kursha side-stepped, Ganyma's fist cut around, connecting below his ribs. All the breath went out of him. He staggered momentarily, fighting to keep himself upright as his lungs screamed for air. Typical, to come in with a cheap shot like that... and yet it was not as bad as it could have been. The push blades remained concealed within the tealblood's gloves. He had not drawn blood. Ganyma was fighting him handicapped.

Lip curling, Kursha switched on the safety. As his breath returned, he swung the butt of the rifle at the tealblood's head. “If you're not going to be serious, then get out of the ******** way!” he snarled.

Ganyma does 5 damage!

Ganyma was knocked back, his skin splitting open where the hard rifle hit. He squinted with the pain reverberating through his horns and stumbled – his breath now uneven as the struggle to regain his senses accelerated. Ganyma backed off enough to make a short run and leap into Kursha, struggling to pull him away.

Get away from here!” He shouted. “Just go! Killing them…!” Ganyma drew his fist back; in the quick fight Kursha may not have noticed that the blade had been retracted. The blow connected. “Makes no difference!”

In some part of his mind, Ganyma knew the rebels were already hopeless. All Kursha could do was take credit. In some way at least taking that away meant something.

Ganyma slammed into Kursha, dismantling his balance for a third time. As the fist crashed into his shoulder, he tipped. At the same time he felt the bite of his earlier injury. A fresh flow of blood seeped through the stitches and into his jacket. Grimacing through the pain, Kursha grabbed ahold of Ganyma's shirt even as he fell. With the momentum of the tealblood's swing, it was more than enough to drag the stocky tealblood down into the reeds with him.

“Makes no difference?” Kursha echoed beneath Ganyma, refraining from retaliating immediately. The very idea elicited a bark of laughter, albeit a strained one, from him. That settled it. Ganyma knew nothing—nothing about him, nor the price of failure. Everything he had ever said might as well have fallen on deaf sponge clots. He reached up through his jacket, nails digging into the wound in his shoulder. “I have my orders. Isn't it about time you started following yours?”

With a burst of motion he whipped his hand out to fling blood up into Ganyma's eyes. Then he jerked his knee to catch the tealblood below the ribs and rolled out from underneath. Scrambling to his feet, he flipped off the safety. “We were on the same side,” he spat.

Ganyma’s vision was filled with blood, but it would hardly stop him. He braced himself for the attack to his gut and jerked backwards just in time with a wheeze.

Kursha’s words made his blood boil. That was it. With a huff from his nostrils, Ganyma lumbered to his feet and clenched every muscle. It felt like pain – it felt like charging up to regenerate when there was nothing to gain. The click of the safety meant that there was no time to waste, but Ganyma knew that he was about to get a face full of lead. He didn’t care. He was ready to walk into hell, and he was taking Kursha with him one way or another.

“Don’t kid yourself. We ain’t never been on the same side. You don’t give a s**t about sides, ‘n neither do I.”

The tealblood stalked up to Kursha and went for the barrel of the gun, but this time he braced it at chest level with little attempt to push it aside.

“All you care about is being on the winning side. Have you won yet? Clearly not, ‘cos you’re still here. Shooting a giant, defenseless grub to make yourself feel better. Shoot me. See if you win.”

Kursha sucked in a breath, face flushed and dark with anger. His pulse throbbed in his throat. They had never been on the same side...? Bullshit. Ganyma had betrayed him. He had betrayed everyone. No matter what his reason at the time, he had made his decision and he had to live with it. But now, somehow he was above that? Thoughts broken and disjointed with rage, Kursha was blind to his own hypocrisy. He opened his mouth to respond, but found himself without an argument. His teeth snapped shut again.

The tealblood had risen to his feet and grabbed hold of the rifle. In his grip the muzzle hovered no more than a few inches away from his chest. Kursha's finger trembled against the trigger. He felt anxious and apprehensive all at once. He locked eyes with the tealblood, expression burning. His lip curled. Ganyma wanted to die so badly? Fine. Fine. He braced himself to shoot. Then he spoke and Kursha's blood froze.

“All you care about is being on the winning side. Have you won yet? Clearly not, ‘cos you’re still here.”

Finger hooked against the trigger, he stood stock still, pump biscuit pounding in his sponge clots. His mouth was suddenly dry.

“Shoot me,” Ganyma continued, challenging. “See if you win.”

His breath caught in his throat. He had not expected that—he had never in a million years expected that, for Ganyma to offer him an opportunity. Obviously the tealblood underestimated him, but that did not negate the reality of the proposal. The offer still stood: he could win.
Don't—
... But if he didn't?
—pretend like—
The question sprang unbidden into his mind. If he failed here, that would be the end of it. Chapter closed. The end. He would have lived his life as pointlessly and forgettably as the millions of nameless who came before him. Worse than average, he would be remembered as the embarrassment who failed to achieve victory when it practically landed in his lap. The familiar sensation of budding hysteria washed over him. He tried to still his shaking hands. Never.
—you understand—
He would win on his own terms.
—me!
How many seconds had slipped past while he stood there paralysed he did not know. But when he moved again, it was instantaneous. In an act he himself could not have predicted, Kursha released his hold on the gun and closed the remaining distance between himself and Ganyma. His hand snaked out and a second later, he had the tealblood's shoulder in a vice grip, claws gouging out the flesh around the bullet wound. Tilting his head, he grinned at Ganyma.

“I don't need to do that to win,” he mocked, thumb seeking out the cartridge and pain. “But how about you? Didn't you promise to kill me? What happened?” His smile turned pitying. “Don't tell me you lost your nerve?”
