When: following Akko's capture, and Kursha losing his own prisoner
Where: the dirty groty swamp
PostPosted: Fri Aug 21, 2015 4:25 am

It took a moment for her eyes to refocus on the blotted sky above. Spindling trees. The smell of rotting wood, the soft lapping of the murky water swirling around her battered body- yes, she was still in the swamp. She let out a soft grunt as the back of her head hit a flat rock, twisting in pain as it dragged down her spine before she kicked it away frantically. W-wait, what--

Byakko jolted. She had awoken flat on her back, half submerged in the shallow swamp water and entangled securely in a net. Her captor was dragging her through the terrain- rather carelessly- and she couldn't make out anything other than Alifax's pointed horns. The last thing she remembered was leading Stryke through the thinning tunnels of branches; there had only been room for one of them to advance at a time. What had happened next? Twisting again, Akko let out another involuntary groan, coughing and spitting out some of the mud that had gotten in her mouth. Fire. She remembered a sudden burst of flame, the vines in front of her erupting in a brilliant light. She had jumped back in surprise, and then-

Well, the rest was obvious, even if she couldn't quite remember it yet. Byakko's fingers twitched, inching for the straps of her kanabo. Her weapon was gone, although she should have expected as much. It didn't seem like the royalist had it on him, either. She silently screamed.

She was obviously stirring from her unconscious state now, and felt no need to pretend otherwise. Why hadn't he culled her on sight? The only thing she needed now to recreate this perfect night of nostalgic betrayal was to be ******** dragged back to Regina's clutches. "Nngh. Where are you taking me?"

Alifax had been very comfortable dragging the mutant (because that was what she was, right?) along. Sure, it'd been hard labor, that dragged on his arms, but he'd ditched the weapon, which had looked heavy, and it wasn't so bad when he thought about the reward he'd get for this service. It wasn't personal, for Alifax: he'd love whatever beetles he'd receive (he hoped he'd receive something), but really he was much more concerned about looking loyal to the crown. Roping this mutant back to Four Fronds would ensure it, too, right? Anyway, Alifax was accustomed to hard labor. It was the role he'd always gotten assigned, before, and this time might not be any different.

When she started talking, though, was when Alifax began to be surprised.

Well, of course she'd start talking eventually, he thought. He hadn't killed her, and it was probably pretty unlikely that she was some extremely weak troll that'd stay passed out for the entirety of his journey back to the Four Fronds. Was he supposed to respond to her, though?

Well, he was pretty sure he'd searched her for communication devices. What could it hurt. "South?" he shrugged. Where else might he take her but the containment facility in Four Fronds? He wasn't very well going to take him past that.

Wait, Kursha had said something...He fumbled with the communication device in the hand that wasn't holding the net. "Hey, Ku - Captain," he corrected himself, narrowing his eyes at the pinkblood on the ground. "She's conscious," he said into the communication device's microphone. At this point, obviously, Alifax was essentially unarmed as well. There was one hand holding the communication device, and another holding the pinkblood's net. Sure, he'd kept his own weapon - his trusty meteors - but he couldn't very well use them with both his hands occupied.

Still. No matter how good she was at fighting - and that was very, from what Alifax had seen - he had trust enough in his abilities that this mutant couldn't wrest herself away from his grasp - or use his communications device to contact anyone helpful - without a significant shift of the circumstances. And that had comforted him enough to make the call.

      [+] Kursha Vidari

There was a long period of radio silence. At last Kursha's voice crackled through the speaker. It sounded rougher than usual, although that could have just been the static. “Really?” He coughed faintly in the background. “About damn time. I was beginning to think maybe you hit her too hard.” A laugh. “What are your coords? I'll be right down.”

South. Well, Byakko had hardly expected her captor to give a detailed account of his plans. She fell silent, glaring belligerently up at the redblood as her mind raced to weigh her few options against the likelihood of her escape. Had Stryke gotten captured, too? There was no way of contacting the rebels, even if he had managed to flee the other royalists. Gritting her teeth and grunting as the back of her skull made contact with a hunk of driftwood, Akko splashed around and did her best to wrench herself into a half-seated position. She was certain now that she recognized Alifax from the military's invasion; the faces of her assailants from the frenzied battle were blurred, but she was positive he had landed more than a few decisive blows on her back at the caverns. He wasn't to be taken lightly.

Beneath the surface of the churning water, the mutantblood worked her fingers between a section of the corded net. It was only rope. Keeping her seething stare firmly locked on the troll above her, Akko began to subtly claw and scratch at the netting. Her nails were always filed to razor sharp points- for good reason. Weaponless, but not entirely defenceless. With any luck, her claws would be enough to saw through the bindings before he noticed, and then-

"Hey, Ku - Captain,"

Every fibre in Akko's being tensed as the first syllable left Alifax's lips. Her attempts to slice through the rope ceased. An involuntary hiss slithered from her own chapped mouth, shifting to disguise the outburst as a pained grunt from, well, being hauled through the uneven swamp terrain. The only thing worse than being dragged back to Regina would be being dragged back to Regina by him.

She held her breath, fully knowing who would respond, but praying all the same that she was mistaken.

Kursha's grainy voice popped through the speaker in response. Of ******** course. Byakko's furious internal screaming crescendoed, nearly drowning out all other panicked thoughts concerning her escape. The fervorous sawing motion of her claws began again, although Akko was vigilant not to churn the swampwater enough to draw attention to her movements.

She needed to get out.

Kursha responded immediately - eagerly, was probably the better word for it. "Well, she wasn't dead," Alifax responded to the first bit. That had been the order, right? Capture without killing? Honestly, Alifax didn't really know what the guy wanted with this pinkblood. Wasn't it better to turn her in and be done with it? (Wasn't she just going to be sentenced to death once they got to the imprisonment facility anyway?) But he relayed his coordinates faithfully - their dillying didn't matter, after all, as long as she was returned to the military in the end. Right? "I'll see you soon," he added. That'd be nice, maybe. He hadn't really gotten much of a chance to talk to Kursha, since they'd kind of been rushed out, and then they'd had to part ways...

Actually, did he really want to talk to Kursha? His immediate thought was yes - Alifax had been a little surprised to see someone he recognized. Of course, it'd all been temporary - and Alifax was pretty sure no one other than the drones had been paying much attention to the guy. Um, well, and the traitors. Or...maybe they had? Somehow Alifax couldn't shake the image of a trigger-happy wiggler who liked cowboys from his mind. It was so easy to see Kursha from then in Kursha now: the brashness and drama was there, of course. The contempt he seemed to feel toward the people around him. That hadn't changed a whit.

But, honestly...what did talking to him change? True, Alifax was interested to learn to identify people who'd been working with the traitors. That way he could catch out the ones that had escaped, at a later date. But did Alifax have much to say to Kursha himself? He'd made it out of the Root alive and then wormed his way into the ranks of some traitors to the nation. The thing was, there was no way Alifax would be willing to risk something like that. He needed no doubt of his allegiance to the Crown. Sure, he had a contingency plan now, but that didn't mean he wasn't redblooded. He needed to be doubly as loyal as anyone else, to stay alive and well and to receive the kind of lifestyle he wanted, with enough room for remotely administering the NFL when he was off-duty. While he could admire the value of Kursha's work - the military was sure to trust him more now that he'd led them to the traitors' lair - it wasn't something Alifax would dare emulate even now.

Besides, the thought of someone discovering him before he'd gained any useful information was a little sickening, and...well, given that the apparent ringleader of that gang of traitors was right here within Alifax's grasp...

Yeah. No matter how good Alifax got at fighting, her group of fellows had been pushed back by an army of subpar drones and some children. He wouldn't stand a chance of living, and neither did this pinkblood's group. And the thing was...sure, sometimes being a redblood in public sucked. Sometimes the reserve forces were called on to do pretty boring s**t. Physical labor. But there was no way he'd pretend to work with her when the risk was so high.

It was a little weird looking at her, actually. Mostly because, well, it didn't look like her eyes had left his face at all. She had a really intense gaze, like she was waiting to move. Alifax wasn't sure he liked the look of it. Intimidating was not perhaps the right word - but she was pretty intense. Wild-eyed.

Wait, s**t. He needed to not be moving - he'd just given Kursha his coordinates. He paused, found a tree, and dragged her over to it. "What do you expect to do with a mother grub, anyway?" he asked, reaching over to prop her up. Didn't want her drowning or something before Kursha showed up. Or, you know, at any point before they got back to the base. Because then she'd be dead. And they'd have been ignoring a military missive.

Wait, she was conscious. Where had he put those handcuffs again?
