The routine was not as common as weekly grinding of fresh peeps or expensive filet from one of the city's fishmongers. After being an eternal senshi roughly 500 days, however, it happened often enough that it no longer made his stomach drop out to feel bones crack under his action. The excuses officers gave were unctuous or martyring and at all times. They were all as young as he was, or further like Hyperborea. He had not met upon any repeat offenders, but whether that was chance or efficacious of the treatment couldn't be told. He wasn't going to make an assumption ether way. There wasn't enough data.

The most recent catch, a lieutenant in greys and neon blues, was limping away as they echoed bitten sobs and cradled both arms to their middle. Thraen watched with practiced indifference. At least they didn't have any starseeds on them. They will have to go to a hospital ER somewhere. Casts. After that, its mostly a waste to use the starseed to heal the injury unless ordered to do so.

The feel of another aura overlapped and drew the Eternals attention- one of order and moving fast as though to intercept the joint pair of the retreating lieutenant and Thraen's own. Are they curious? Or looking to help just in case? Who knows. I can intercept them to find out.

So the Eternal of Gardens shifted from statue-stillness to rapid life and put himself in a few leaps in the direct path of the other Order signature, standing in the midst of a quiet, residential street.

To say that Eurydike was impulsive would be a gross, gross understatement. All it took was the p***k of chaos energy on his senses to get him moving, twice as fast if it was coupled with the more soothing aura of Order senshi. He didn't usually go out of his way to approach those; not worth his time, really.

Maybe it sounded cold, but he didn't come out here to chat, bum a cigarette, make some friends. The only reason he bothered to leave Tolliver's side at night was to try and make this shithole a little safer for his lover to live in, and maybe help save someone's life along the way. (And get a little payback for those, what, three times these assholes had drained him before he'd powered up for the first time.) Sweet deal, right?

There were a lot of problems with this, of course - maybe the biggest being that he literally paid not a damn lick of attention to how strong the auras he was chasing were. It wasn't that his senses were flawed or anything. Eurydike just didn't ******** think before he acted, at least not in costume. Slowly, maybe deliberately, this side of him was becoming an outlet for all the s**t Hitch bit back during the daytime. Eurydike was, in a way, both the best and worst of him.

It was a potent cocktail, bound to spark eventually.

Tonight, though, was not the night - because even if Eurydike didn't realize it yet, the battle had already been won. He'd charged headfirst towards a fight that didn't need his fists or his rings, and he'd been so busy, so intently running, that he didn't realize until almost too late that there was an obstacle on his path.

"Oh, ******** -- !" he sputtered, skidding awkwardly to a stop from inches from the (annoyingly tall) blond, stumbling over his stupidly flimsy sandals that offered little to no traction, not to ******** mention do anything to actually protect his goddamn feet from anything. His brown eyes were wide and startled as he took a few quick steps back, biting down on the piercing on his lip as he looked the senshi over.

"Dude. You tryin' to give me a goddamn heart attack, or what?" he sputtered, voice rough and tight, but not necessarily unfriendly.

"The bones of this enemy are broken. " Still before remained still even as the other senshi resorted to base cursing and frustrated posturing to cover over his lack of finesse. Thraen's eyes took a long moment to blink, evaluating what could be taken in of uniform and presence- guesses as to what the other's sphere or age yet beyond grasp. It was an odd ensemble. "If you tracked the chaos aura, you felt mine. What drew you here? Lieutenants don't last long against eternal senshi- they have only their energy draining and ability to take starseeds. No weapons, no teleportation, too slow, too weak. You pursued them just the same, and ignored my presence here?"

There is no feel to others rabidly pursuing. No partner or team. He's out alone with that sort of death-wish enthusiasm?

"We have not met before. I'm Thraen." Older or more green than I? Either likely when not knowing another senshi. He sounds young. Maia does as well, and she'd been 5 years at it. There are chibi senshi out there. At least no younger than 16. No older than...what...25? Out here alone,.

Well that was one hell of a greeting, huh? Oh, okay. Hello to you too, guy.

"Hey, well, great - you got it covered then."

Still - as the strange senshi (up close, taking the time to really look, Eurydike realized he felt strong) wordlessly evaluated him, he was doing a little of the same. Thraen was one to talk about wardrobe choices, really. Wings on his a**, branches poking out of his head - like, he looked like he could probably just head-butt the damn negaverse, really. Although he didn't carry himself like someone that would do it, and the scar on his face told the story of someone who'd seen some s**t. He didn't stare, but just glanced, turning it over briefly in his head. Did he get that as a senshi? Before that?

The first thing Eurydike had learned right off the bat, though: the guy was blunt. "I feel chaos and I go, " he supplied rather simply, shrugging his shoulders as if that made a difference. "And hey, y'never know, right? - even if you're stronger, these dicks are sneaky as ********. Can't hurt to go give some back-up, right?" He hadn't known any of that. All he really knew about the negaverse in general, really, was that they sucked a**, were evil, and both attacked innocents and drained their energy. Mostly what he knew what he was apparently supposed to take them down before they killed people or whatever. He opened his mouth to question the teleporting thing, but ultimately didn't - the other senshi's eyes were already critical.

For his part, he had no idea how old Thraen was - but he tried, in his own way, to stand a little taller and polish up his drawl as the other senshi introduced himself. Time to return the favor. "Eurydike, " and although he was trying, by nature his voice would always be low and rough around the edges. "Senshi of salt. Nice to meet'cha, Thraen." He extended his hand, politely. "An' what's your - I mean, uh - I'm guessin' you've got somethin' to do with nature?" He didn't really know if it was rude to ask something like that straight out or not; wasn't like he'd talked to many other senshi.

"Tactics can palliate a difference of rank. 'Feel and go' doesn't fit under that aegis. But, "Thraen took Eurydike's hand in his own solid, sculptor's grip. "Thank you for the back up. Had something gone wrong, it would have been a relief to find I wasn't alone. "

"Salt? " Standing back again, the repetition of magical sphere was uttered with genuine curiosity. It was so specific, compare to the abstract concepts his mind usually wandered to- War, Madness, Silence. Orchid's were specific. A singular family of flowering plants among the countless that canvassed the Earth. He remembered from his dreams a young senshi he'd known, the Little Wolf. Why not a mineral? "Salt was currency of it's own, once. Of great worth, then, you are yourself. Thraen is Senshi of Gardens, for all the good the title does on a battlefield. Nature, but ordered and manicured to purpose. "

"Have you been a senshi long ? " This one had not been at the Black Watch meeting, though that could be just a failing of word-of-mouth reaching far enough. Or he might have been awakened in the months since then, without the guardian cat in question having the brains in their head to make use of sending the Executors a heads up to get Eurydike connected to some allies. A basic senshi, another one, out patrolling alone as though the kidnappings and corruptions of New Years hadn't come to pass.

At first, it irrationally needled Eurydike that he couldn't place the words Thraen was using, and the sentences basically fell to spools of thread without them. He sort of got the gist, but it still bothered him - in his own head, he repeated the words to himself again and again: palliate, aegis, palliate, aegis. He wouldn't ask; he'd look them up later on his own time, then see if he should be insulted or not.

But Thraen's grip was solid, and his words of thanks rang sincere, so that was enough to wash away his quietly hidden irritation before it could ever blossom into proper aggravation. For a minute, a voice in the back of his head warned that the senshi might be patronizing him, but Eurydike was trying to give him the benefit of a doubt. His mother'd always said not to underestimate a solid handshake.

"Salt, " Eurydike echoed ruefully with a bit of a dry laugh. "Yeah, I know." Not like he'd seen many senshi or anything, especially not in more than passing, but he could still remember the flashes of magic he'd seen back at New Year's, and they'd been a hell of a lot more effective than his little protective circles.

He wasn't really expecting the other guy to go ahead and turn it around into a compliment, though. He fidgeted a bit, tapping his hand idly against his thigh as he chewed on the back side of his lip piercing, and again the voice in his head wondered if Thraen was patronizing him. His voice didn't sound unkind or anything, but since when didn't they try and make it sound nice?

Compliments would never be ******** easy for him to swallow, not even from Tolliver.

But still, when the blond went into the explanation of his sphere, Eurydike's grin was more geniune. "Thraen of Gardens - okay, " and he shifted his weight from one foot to the other, arching a brow at him. "Eden was a garden, an' it ******** us up real good at the beginning, if you buy into that s**t. - don't you stand there lookin' all impressive an' then sell yourself short, Butterfly."

Butterfly. Whoops. It'd been sort of bouncing around his head, but he hadn't really meant to actually ******** say it. He bit down hard on the inside of his cheek and just decided to pretend he didn't just ******** say that to the guy, shifting his weight back to the other foot again and longing for a smoke. "Nah, not long. Couple of months, maybe? - I wasn't too active in the beginning, " he admittedly with a shrug. And for whatever ******** reason, felt like he owed him an explanation. "Negaverse kind of ******** me over before I ever woke up - what like - three times? - so when a cat came pawing at me with a youma in tow, wasn't exactly the highlight of my week if y'know what I mean."

That opened up to more questions about him, though. Eurydike was fine with some. But it'd be better to talk about Thraen. "How 'bout you? - how long you been at this? - has this city always been such s**t?"

Butterfly? That is a new one. Is it meant to be an insult or a pet term? A pet name already seems premature. Thraen's left eyebrow ratched up, the rest of his expression impassive. A couple of months only. But with experience as a victim- that would sour the desire for many to be involved at all. If it's only been a while, I doubt he wants to chat about the trauma with a stranger. He might not know a lot of terminology, based on his awakening and exposures since. Best to chain things together. "You can call me 'Butterfly,' if you wish. It is no worse than 'Blondie'. Which Mauvian cat gave you your pen and name?"

"Two years, six months. I can't speak to 'always' in regard to the status of the city, but I know at least one senshi that has been fighting for maybe...six years? She isn't the first senshi and admitted there were others who may have been awakened earlier. Eternal Maia is her name. The War, and the enemy in the Negaverse, goes back at least a thousand years. This is only the current front of a war between two magical sides. As far as I've learned, there was a lull where neither side was much active for most of that. Ballpark, maybe ten years or less. "

"Do you have a partner or team? I didn't have any contacts when I started out. I learned from mistakes or the Primer on our phones. I had a handful of one-night mentors here and there. It isn't the best way to learn about magic, the war, or what we have access to to do it trial-and-error. Our enemies maim, kill and corrupt us to their service to do the same to civilians, knights and other senshi. " Thraen motioned the back of his index finger along his facial scar as an emphasis of the damage he was talking about. Then he offered the palm out to a side as he turned shoulders and waist to lead into a stroll. "Do you mind if we walk as we talk? Our aura's are beacons, and it's tactically poor to stand still at unawares unless very certain of an unassailable location. "

Goddamnit it, of course Thraen didn't just let it slide - Eurydike's cheeks burned, mildly mortified, but hey - he wasn't about to acknowledge it'd been a mistake. So fine then, he wanted to called him on it and be Butterfly, so ******** be it. Butterfly it was then! (Blondie, though - hah, that one was good too.) "Mauvian? - y'mean the talking cats with lasers?" He'd skimmed the primer and all, but more some entries than others. When it came to talking cats, well, how much more could a primer really tell him about that? "A youma was after her, so... I tried to patch her up after, but I ain't seen her since."

His brow furrowed at the mention of her. Even if he wouldn't come out and say it, even if he didn't really want to be Eurydike in the first place, of course he ******** worried about her.

His eyes widened, and his jaw nearly dropped. Two years, six months. - he couldn't even fathom that. Much less six years of this bullshit. "A t-thousands of years? - are you actually shitting me right now?" he sputtered out. Like, he'd imagined making a difference for Tolliver's sake and all that, yeah. He wanted to protect him. But he hadn't - "I never ********' signed up for a lifetime commitment, " he half-snarled, not that he was angry at Thraen himself or anything, but... <******** this s**t, for real. "Y'mean to tell me that cat roped me into a damn war without an endgame?? Are you ********' serious?"

Partner or team - "No, nobody, " he said honestly with a shrug of his shoulders, and this time he really did fumble around for a smoke, still reeling from the last blow the garden senshi had laid on him. "I just do what I can, I mean - I'm only tryin' to help so no one gets ******** over." Tolliver, specifically. But he wasn't about to mention him, and besides, wasn't like he hadn't helped other people along the way. "I don't really got the time to waste bein' social, ah - " He realized how that probably sounded when he was standing here walking and talking with another senshi. Rapidly, he back-tracked, clearing his throat as he amended, "I mean, not like I mind meetin' other senshi, I just - I don't got a lot of time in my day, so I just try an' tackle what chaos I can sense while I'm out, y'know? I want my time to matter."

Probably didn't sound much better, huh?

Kill or corrupt - he glanced at Thraen's scar, pursed his lips, and began to walk without much protest, fishing out his lighter. Although thinking of it - "Y'mind?" he asked, waving the pack casually in the air. "You can have one if you want."

'Her' and 'her', no names, just that it was a female Mauvian that had been in distress. It was unlike Ash to leave anyone without a name or a solid run down, so the Garden Eternal crossed her off the list of potentials. The cream female that lost her starseed and unlocked my starseed? The hyper one with the goggles? Diana? Aegir's 'Pray'? Anothe I haven't met? Too many eventualities to guess. Is he being deliberately vague in not answering a direct question? What is the point? Doesn't want to admit he just doesn't know? Or something else? Worry of backlash if the Mauvian died later?

Thraen's eyes narrowed slightly, but there wasn't much for the reaction Eurydike had. "You didn't sign up for a lifetime. You didn't sign any expectation. That implies that there is some authority figure that cares whether you go out and protect others with the gifts unlocked in you. There isn't. It is like regular life, some people will agree with you, some will judge you. Either way, it is your choice. "

"All Negaverse agents can reach into your chest and draw out your soul to kill you. Captains and Generals can teleport in a blink. They can summon tens of youma to their location and command them. They can all eat starseeds to heal their injuries mid-fight. They regularly train with each other because they are a military. We are outclassed, unless we're smart. Survival and success is not a matter of 'social time' being wasteful. It's war tactics. Your magic runs out. Trained Sword vs. Casual Fists has a regular outcome."

But I waste your time, naturally. Thraen lifted and waved a hand to indicate he didn't care if Eurydike smoked or not. "People are going to be hurt and die, that shouldn't have, because of the harvests of the Negaverse and Mirror Court. The only difference is that if you choose to stick it out, and be smart about it, you could prevent some of that. Maybe we'll succeed. Maybe it will take ten years to find Queen Metallia's source, or how to destroy her. Twenty. World War II took 6. The Israeli–Palestinian conflict has been going on for more than sixty years. "

"How much you do, with who, and for what or how long, are all choices we each make. We are not a military. You can go home and break your henshin pen, if you want. But it doesn't stop them from seeing you, and everyone around you as a harvest source whether you use your magic or not."

Belatedly, watching Thraen carefully, Eurydike realized he'd made a blunder - he'd described her, but never actually put a name to her. "Sorry, I meant to say - her name was Amber - I don't know if you knew her or whatever, but that's her name." His cheeks burned a little in muted embarassment; must have been the lack of sleep. He was usually so damn good about nailing the details.

The salt senshi snorted, brushing his hair out of his eyes with a swipe of his hand only to have it fall right back again. "Well, s**t - no offense Butterfly, but I ********' figured as much. No one's really walked up to me an' barked any orders besides a fly-by cat. I'm not doin' this 'cause someone's tellin' me to, I'm doin' this 'cause this city is s**t - no offense - " he echoed it again, just in case, "An' I got people to watch out for." And by people he really mostly meant one person but that wasn't something Thraen had to know all the sordid details about now. "I just - cause there is no one, I didn't really - I didn't ********' know what I was takin' on. Not like I can just go back on it now an' pretend not to know s**t."

Then, as for what the negaverse could do, well - "Well ain't that just ********' hunky dory, " he sneered sarcastically, and went right ahead and lit up the cigarette because yup, he needed it. "I don't mean it like that, just... I ain't kiddin' when I say my time's super limited. I only got a few hours to try an' do somethin'. Like, what if in the time I took to go network or whatever, come poor sap gets drained dry? - I know how that probably ********' sounds but, " and he shrugged, because it was one of those 'it is what it is' things.

"I'm not duckin' out in any case. I had enough s**t happen when I wasn't Eurydike, I ain't about to open myself or T - the people I care about to that kinda s**t again. I don't answer to nobody but myself on that. If I can do somethin', I should do it. These ********' people are scum. The ******** am I supposed to go back to ignoring it, y'know? - this all sucks a**, don't get me wrong, but droppin' out ain't really an option for me."

Amber It was not a name on the small list of the Primer, nor one he'd ever heard before from senshi, knight or Mauvian. The matter paled compared to when Eurydike kept talking. It was a barrage of pointlessness that see-sawed with self contradiction and vulgarity that tried to be casual. Or devil-may-care? 'are you actually shitting me right now?' doesn't mesh well to ' I ********' figured as much. ' Obviously you hadn't or you wouldn't have been so taken aback.

At least the cigarette, unpleasant as it was, provided an olefactory change to the whole-garden bouquet of tree and flower that Thraen's uniform perpetually surrounded him with. The basic senshi's surprise at some of the abilities of their enemy further called into doubt any actual reading, or maybe retention, of the information in the Primer. Some of that information was there, and written with the Senshi of Garden's own name beside it. If you need me to justify to you why, after telling you what our enemies can do, social excursions are necessary...
At least Salt is appropriately often a box of rocks.

"If you take the time to make nice, to find a patrol partner or a full team, then your chances of your own survival are better. Your chances of being able to, like a wolf pack, bring down larger prey are also increased. If you're worried about the numbers game, think of it this way. You fight a lieutenant and the best you manage is scaring them off the person they were draining. You saved one life. Congratulations. But you took damage and can't patrol the next day, week, two weeks, because they broke your wrist. The Lieutenant can eat a starseed and go right back out tomorrow, drain five people and starseed two of them.
In scenario two, you've made friends with a knight. You go patroling together, and come across a lieutenant. Because there's two of you, you're able to pincer the enemy and they can't escape. Execute the target and they can neither drain people tomorrow, nor starseed a couple people every week. You've just saved those 5 from the first one, as well as not taken as much harm yourself. You and your buddy can go out the next night and keep the streets clean. "

'T-' Who is that? The important someone, the Achilles heel, that he's thinking about often enough to nearly blurt out as the primary reason for why he is out here. Personal goals, then, rather than the generic and more heroic someone, anyone, everyone that he so bombastically claims to protect. That's fine. Hopefully this 'T-' doesn't end up the way so many others do- dead, maimed, or on the other side. Or all of the above, like Alois.
Ze stereotypical fate, of course. If he's lucky, zey'll die- zey will be found. Zere is no luck.
Zan who will gif' him a reason to leaf' his home and go out into ze night?

"Tactics. Statistics. Predictions and probabilities. " Thraen paused, pulling out his senshi phone and thumbing some of the icons. The man was circle talking with his 'going back on - back to ignoring.' Is this his coping mechanism? How he tries to get more out of the wan thoughts he already had? "Do you know how to scan in new contacts, in order to be able to reach potential partners for patrols, meetings, training, or in case you find yourself in a bind for housing, medical attention or suppies? You can scan me. Likewise, are you trained for combat? If you're serious about making the most of your limited time, then you might consider spending some of it sooner getting combat trained. There's a senshi I know of who knows Krav Maga- a combat system used by civilian, police and military applications the world over. I can get you in contact with her?"

If Eurydike had known any of Thraen's thoughts just then - about the contradictions, the thickness, any of it - he probably would've been the first person to agree with him. Even if he'd never come out and said it, at least not without a lot of bourbon in him to start.

Retention wasn't so much his issue with the primer, really - he'd read bits of it, the parts that'd jumped out at him and grabbed his attention, and what he did read stayed with him. But he was a painfully slow reader, and the act itself frustrated the hell out of him for his own inadequacy - again. Not that he'd ever come out and admit to it.

He flushed a bit, chewing idly on the end of his cigarette and beating a slow rhythm out on his thigh as Thraen explained the two scenarios for him - and he couldn't say he was wrong about it, exactly. "Okay, okay, you got me, " he mumbled around his cancer stick, holding both gloved hands in the air with a hint of a wry smile. "Maybe you're right. I mean there ain't a whole lot of room to argue when you put it like that."

He'd consider it, if the chance came up. It couldn't kill him to approach a few more Order signatures, right? The thought still rankled him a little, irrationally - his world was comfortable with just him and Tolliver residing in it, after all. But he was going this for his boyfriend, and if it meant the difference between keeping Tolliver safe and him getting drained or worse, then --

How to use the phone, that was something he'd learned a little about. "Yeah, one of the other senshi taught me the whole scan dealio - Cor Caroli, didn't catch what his sphere was, " and he remembered the senshi's name, although part of him terribly longed to just go ahead and call him Cor Canoli. The senshi smiled at Thraen then, taking one last long drag of his cigarette before tossing the butt aside. "More solid advice. ******** yeah I'd love that." He resisted the urge to ask if whoever this training person was would charge him or not. That was a conversation he needed to broach with someone as sharp as Thraen. "Thanks, by the way. - for the insight an' the words of wisdom an' all. You're pretty helpful Butterfly."

'Cor Caroli,' must be either new or old...I wonder which. Much like you, unknown. And which cat awakened them? Despite the asking or wisdom still of the Black Watch, none of the cats have taken up the idea of immediately bringing new awakenings to the attention of the watch, to knowledge of it, directly to any of the teams to at least learn the ropes or a brief mentorship. Nothing.
This is all
damned.

Thraen's own features remained their trained, marble enigma as his attention directed to the other man's face and the surprising smile there. I have carried bodies of other senshi, civilians, and enemies. Of course I'm helpful. But that is melodramatic, isn't it? Maudlin. So, too, with 'I would like to be able to meet you again.' What is the right thing to say then, that avoids personal stupidities of over-emotion or predictions of the future play out to someone with so much bravado and plainly no wit to learn anything except by blunt personal experience no matter how many verbal warnings are offered? 'Maybe' I'm right.
'Maybe.' Butterfly. 'Friends to know, and ways to grow.' So read a book, Salt. You poor innocent fool. Who dropped you in this war, with all your bravado and cheer? Like Eridanus.

"Her name is Penthesilea, Senshi of War. Thank me by meeting her and training with her at least once. Even just the basics of unarmed combat versus armed combat. That will be thanks enough. And if you need anything- money, help, training, a patrol partner, a place to stay, a hot meal. Anything at all. Contact me. I find no trouble in helping where I can. " You are needed. Every senshi, knight and cat. Needed and need to be united. Alive. Powers that be....if all of us together can even hope to achieve what all the Silver Millennium apparently couldn't in finishing this war.

"Penthesilea, Senshi of War, " Eurydike murmured once under his breath, committing it to memory. Repetition was, for him, one of the better means of remembering things. Although he had to say, wryly, with a definite smile, "Gardens, Salt, an' War? Seriously? - we draw the short straw here or what?"

But really.

Seriously.

War. Not cool man. Why couldn't he be like. The senshi of high powered assault rifles or something? Or even like. Rabies. Or hey, pointy things! Sailor Eurydike, Senshi of Pointy s**t. That would've been nice.

Getting off topic here.

"I will do that," he said sincerely, and once he gave his word, Logan Hitchcock would not break it. The mention of 'money' was first on the list, and although he didn't flinch at all, made his smile a bit strained - it was just part of a long stream of offers of assistance, nothing personal, do not take it personally Logan.

"I will." He wouldn't. Not for most of those, anyway. Training wasn't out of the question, but - "And thanks again, Butterfly. It's been nice meetin' ya. You'll be hearin' from me." That much, yes, he could promise.
