Previously... "Hey, Moon --over here. Let's get some distance from Steam and Snake, follow up the back, ya dig?" She suggested. Aerona adjusted her mask. "See if you can keep up, sweet pea." It was a playful jab - greenbloods had so many wonderful jokes to make out of their blood hue. Best to keep the atmosphere light in a place so dark. The irony. Aerona gave Rasali a quick salute and hopped onto a tree trunk. Because of the jagged terrain, roots were everywhere. Hiding spots and nooks and crannies were everywhere in this part of the marsh, and their rooftops made up an intricate series of uprooted flora just ripe for climbing. "These trees must be ancient..." Aerona mused. Even the battleworn trees of Four Fronds looked fresher than the longstanding marsh trees. She ran a hand over the bark and plucked a cone from the ground. Fascinating. "Yo, Moon -- you any good at tracking? I'm a mountain gal myself."

It didn't take much to get Luxara to break from the main group for a scouting mission, but she felt a gung-ho excitement to pair off instead of fly solo. She wasn't a huge fan of being by herself right now.
So she smiled and nodded at Aerona's idea, then snorted a laugh at the dig tossed her way. "Me? Keep up? Just watch, raspberry." She turned a bit so her coat tails would fan out behind her before using some roots to hop then launch to one of the trees and climb up, then settled on a branch when the redblood started checking things out. Already it felt a bit too hot; swampy humidity was a new beast for her, and wearing a trench coat wasn't helping any. It was so muggy, she thought it was no wonder trolls didn't seem to live out here.
Despite that, the scenery was beautiful from where she was. The lack of trolls left a lot of the natural order, even if it meant lots of bugs and bogs and gross things like that. Kursha would hate it.
Luxara's face twitched at the thought, then tried to shake it away before it could herald anything she didn't have time to deal with.
She was rubbing her face and trying not to groan when Aerona called up to her. "Eh? Oh! Haha, ohhhh man." Her hand dropped away and Luxara looked down at Aerona, eyes glinting. "Tracking is my life. I live in the forest, like the forest-forest where it's all hunts and wild lusii and stuff. I've been hunting n' stealthing it up since I was a wiggler! It's do that or get culled where I'm from. Though in my area things are a bit less...damp. So that'll be something of a challenge sometimes, probably."

“Raspberry!?” Aerona was slightly offended, but mostly amused. She had that one coming and it was certainly better than “freckles”. The two flew through the underbrush. As Luxara explained her tracking experience, she slowed and looked at her incredulously. “You live in the Four Fronds Forest?” Yeesh, what was up with trolls living in that death trap! She thought about little Lutrin and her tree-house, thinking of how this troll might live. For a greenblood, she sure lived below her means. Aerona couldn’t help but wonder why she had opted to live in such a dangerous area. It seemed ill-advised at best, and like a clear death-wish at worst. “Your lusus must hate you.” She mused. All of her harshness aside, kids were inclined to follow their lusii to their preferred locales. It was how she ended up in Busthind, after all. Aerona smiled and put her hands on her hips. “Sounds better than me. You wanna be the lead tracker? You’re less inclined to miss something than I am. Then we can get ahead of these royalist freaks.” Aerona looked ahead to the nearest clearing. There were no clear trails in this thicket of unmarked territory. She carefully bent some branches nearby to mark their place and made note of their location. With the terrain as unforgiving as this, she began to worry about the Mother Grub’s mobility. Would they even be able to get her through this mess? She would have to rely on Luxara to forge a clear trail.

Luxara broke out laughing. What a weird reaction! "My lusus loves the forest! If he didn't, he'd probably be out here with me more often. But he just kinda, I dunno, hates everywhere else. Bad experiences outside of the forest." She shrugged. "Man though, people sure like to make a stink after finding out where I live. I love it."
She stood up tall on the branch to get a better view of the area. The way ahead looked messy in all sorts of senses; muddy terrain, rising water lines, high grass where it wasn't as gross, foliage, etc etc.
The greenblood slid off the tree and worked out a plan. "We'll mark every few trees we pass. Guess we'll have to be super subtle about it since there aren't any antlerbeasts around here, from the looks of it. Depending on who might end up following us, we might have to change the pattern up once in a while." Rasali and Forera might have to follow after them if, by chance, they found the right way back to the rest of the rebels. But super regular notching could get the wrong attention, too. "Stay in my tracks the best you can in case someone half-competent comes after us. Better to make them think there's one of us, if anything, than two of us."Sypon *FLOUNDERS* God please let me know if I need to edit s**t to make Luxara actually look like she knows what she's talking about. This sort of thing is the ONE thing I don't want to heck up this meta. Luxara's in her element but alas I am incompetent about these matters. orz

“Heh. Whatever you say,” Aerona exclaimed. What a nut. She didn’t understand trolls who could afford to live outside of their means, and chose a deathtrap instead. Maybe it was the adrenaline. Or maybe the free stuff from the hunt? Either way, Moon was a curious troll to track with. But she was clearly knowledgeable. The way she flitted through the swamp was impressive. “Sounds good. I’ll be right behind you.” Aerona cursed the fact that she lacked a suitable weapon for cutting or breaking. Her explosives would do them no good in a stealthy situation. She would have to go into the Chittentown market and invest in a cheap knife some time. Perhaps she could strap it to her other leg like her pouch. Aerona smiled. “I’ll bet you there’re smilers ‘round these parts.” She hoped the royalists would be suitable bait. Aerona heard tale of lake smilers – this would be their main stomping ground, she figured casually. As the two crept steadily through the woods, Aerona couldn’t help but wonder about her teammate. Odette had sponsored her, but as for Luxara she didn’t see her come in with anyone. The fogies had their group, the lace ladies were their own something or other… Other than the teal twins and Rasali, they were the most motley crew here. Even if it reduced their stealth a touch, Aerona wanted the scoop. “So, Moon…” Aerona mumbled quietly. “How did you end up with the rebels? I’ve been a connection of Odette’s for sweeps. What’s your story?”

"Uhhhhh," Luxara took a moment to rub the back of her neck and wince. "It's complicated. Honestly, there's a lot to everything leading up to now that would go back to when I was a little kid. But we don't have time for that. Here's the thing: I've known a few people in the rebellion. I know Snake well, I know her bro some, I met the yellowblood who healed me before. So I've known a few people. Some as rebels, some not until recently. But the person who kept me up to date on stuff before I finally got to dedicate myself full-time..."
She sighed. Time to bring up one of the harder facts. Luxara wasn't keen on bringing up how she waffled between sides, or bringing up Ganyma in general, or anything that felt like it would put her in a bad corner when they needed to work together, but this at least was necessary going forward.
"That was Kursha. Which I know is going to make everything going forward hell. Tonight I learned that I've been a super terrible judge of character. I never should've trusted him. I should've known better. But instead I expected...I expected things to go a lot differently. A nice time helping pull the rebellion back together. Idealistic s**t. You'd think I'd know better considering where I live, and the OHC s**t that went down, and, god, all sorts of crap, but I guess I was just desperate for things to not be terrible all the time. Instead I was nearly killed by a childhood friend. Guess all I'm good for is tracking because I guess I'm really awful at reading people." Even the cliffnotes was a lot. They needed to keep moving.

“Sheesh.” Aerona listened to Luxara’s tale in disbelief. “What a dickhole. Hope you got a few shots in on him, sister,” she muttered. So long as the traitor was brought to justice (and Luxara didn’t bring any of that “poor judge of character” crap with her to the PI), Aerona was on her side. She wrinkled her nose, thinking about the horrible greenblood who had stormed the base. If she couldn’t see that that shameless showboater was bad news, either he was the best actor in the world or she really was clueless. As long as she could read purrbeast droppings and broken twigs, Aerona supposed. “We don’t gotta talk about it.” She encouraged. Aerona’s attention was caught by a huge winged creature scampering through the trees.

"More than a few," she retorted with some pride in her voice despite, well, everything. Luxara found it to be a relief that an outside source was taking it so well. The shorthand version of things, anyway. Wiggler steps. She wasn't stepping in deep s**t right from the start; that had to count for something.
She reflexively crouched at the sound of something flapping about up above. Luxara looked up from her position, meanwhile trying to become as invisible as possible without making any noise in her surprise. There was definitely a something up there. Someone's lusus? A predator on the prowl? They'd have to keep an eye on it if it stayed nearby; Luxara wasn't about to take any chances, but also didn't want to start shooting at everything that moved about in the brush as a cautionary measure. That in itself could work against them.

“Nice.” Aerona mumbled. She crouched and kept her feet spread far across the ground for balance. Everything in the swamp was eerie. She felt a buzz against her hair and slapped the guts out of a knuckle-sized bloodcreature. “Ugh! At least in Busthind there’s fewer bugs,” She spat. Aerona wiped off the juice onto her own clothes, careful not to leave unnecessary traces for anyone tracking them. She kept a close eye on Luxara’s movements, wondering where her tracking skills would take them. It seemed foolish to put her trust in that of a stranger. In the back of her mind she had already formulated an escape route. Luxara would take less heat than she, after all. For a moment Aerona praised her mask. Hopefully the royalists wouldn’t track her by her horns and blood hue – if so she might need to ditch them entirely. It was a disturbing thought. Keep on the down low. Speaking of which, another wingbeast fluttered up ahead. Aerona ducked low and balanced with her arms, nearly stepping over with a splash. She shook out her hands to get the jitters out. “See anything up ahead, Moon? You think we should keep goin’ straight?” She could see nothing but murk and fog. Perhaps sometime they’d reconvene with the others.

"Yeah, Busthind is pretty different. Some of the caves up there are interesting," Luxara muttered, making distracted small-talk before focusing on the matter at hand again. Even though she kept scanning the area, the greenblood's attention returned to the trees a few times, honing in on the bird activity up there.
"If there's more than one flapbeast, it might be a flock. We should try to find away around their nesting tree so we don't spook them. ...Or get them to attack, if they're territorial, or brave about eating troll meat or something."
Some creatures were easy to deal with in general, and in stealthy situations, but birds? Doing anything besides giving them a wide berth was risky. The creatures could be so obnoxious, whether it be flying off in a big group or squawking about whoever was around. Or cause a ruckus attacking people. Yeah, no, she'd rather have to deal with a large purrbeast. "We'll go around, listen for if there are more, and keep trying to get around that and hopefully not step on anything grouchy in the meantime."

Aerona nodded. Luxara had a good head about her when it came to the wild. She’d definitely be useful if… If the rebels were stuck here. Oh gog, would she have to move to the disgusting swamp? Aerona mentally tried to imagine a light at the end of the marshlands – maybe a nice warm beach or anything that wasn’t gunk, trees and gnashing critters. “Sounds good. Lead the way.” She trailed after Luxara carefully, carefully analyzing the trees. Sure enough, there was a huge nest near the canopy – sheltered from the sweltering sun by a roughly crafted covering of leaves and marsh fronds. Good call. Once the two had slunk around the danger, Aerona picked up the pace. They were deep into the Fingers of the Swamp now. With a quick glance around, she was thankful that the rocky outcroppings of the landscape were serving as landmarks. Without them, and without Luxara, they may have been going in circles. The swamp air was quiet and crisp, and the two came to an open area surrounding a larger channel that cut the treeline. It was a perfect vantage point – hide in the trees and overlook the clearing. Foolish royalists were sure to come out this way. “Moon.” Aerona mumbled. “You think we’re gettin’ out of here? Or are we gonna be stuck in the swamp for the rest of our sweeps, hiding out?”

Luxara found herself wishing for a better sniffnode and a pair of ears. Man, if only Stagdad were here! He'd find a way out, and if he bothered anything, would stomp it out before it could give their position away. She could figure out tree animals before they could poop on her either literally or metaphorically, but the terrain wasn't as forgiving. There were insects who lived in swarms under the ground in some places... Other things burrowed... Other things used mud as camouflage.
Goddammit, she was overthinking this.
Aerona's voice piped up again behind her, lower than before. The redblood's words made her pause.
"I... Hadn't thought about it that way," she admitted. Luxara marked another tree, halted as a slitherbeast passed by a few feet away, then kept on. "Last time I got caught up in something, I got to go home. And the time before that. I...I'd like to think it'd be possible to go back, but the other side saw our faces and our symbols, didn't they?"
In her experience, if the government was anything, it was efficient. How quickly had they moved troops for the OHC thing? It was immediate, convenient. Much like tonight.
"s**t. Well, y'know, the rest of our lives could be a pretty long time. I wouldn't look at it so bleakly! There's gotta be a way to live a semi-normal life, even after everything..."
Granted, she had been a hermit for most of her days. Joining society again wasn't exactly a high priority, but being afraid of the government closing in at any moment was a whole other thing.

“Mmm… Yeah.” Aerona reflected and sighed. “I mean, you said… What’shishole—Kur was the one who dragged you into this mess. He definitely knows your face. Plus whoever he’s talked to in the Initiative. That’s so shitty. I… Man, I hope I can go home.” She wasn’t ready for any of this. As much as she wanted to believe she was strong, Aerona was still just a kid. Maybe Luxara had less to lose than her, but maybe she had a home that she couldn’t go back to now. Regardless, she tried to look on the bright side. Aerona appreciated her attitude. “Yeah. I mean, livin’ with some rebel high-thinkers is better than being in the city! Why am I upset?” Aerona laughed brusquely, catching her volume after accidentally releasing a loud guffaw. “I’m better off in some dangerous, stinky swamp than as a redblood in society anyway. Whatever… We’ll get through this.” Aerona gave Luxara a grin with regained confidence. After the exchange, the reality of the trip started to sink in. Not only was she tired, but she had no idea what any of this was leading to the best she could do was live in the moment. Aerona stopped suddenly. “Hey… You hear that?” Gl!tch~ We can probably connect this back to the other teens finding the lee/eri/psy/az group if you want! If not it can just be.... A fish or something haha. Whenever you wanna cool

"And maybe there's more to the area than just swamp! Maybe we'll find an oasis or uncharted woodland or....something." It wasn't likely, but who knew! The area certainly looked rather untouched by trollkind. Perhaps no one had traveled far enough to find anything better than, well, this. "Anyway, we can definitely find a place to hang out and stay under the radar until the crown has more important things to worry about. Anywhere creatures can live, we can too, you know? Just a matter of sopor...."
She stopped in-step with Aerona, sensing the same disturbance the redblood had. Luxara ducked down lower, then started edging towards wherever it was coming from while still shielded by surrounding flora.
There were voices, first and foremost. Unfamiliar, high-pitched. Children? Looking through the brush, no face or symbol rang a bell from the time in HQ. Three out of four were highbloods, to boot. Likely not rebels. s**t.Sypon I'm cool with wrapping things up. :0
