Dekana had been talked into gathering a bunch of escaped minipets... and they weren't so mini. At least the stable hand had been honest this time! He was looking for pets larger then normal but not huge by any means.
The fog was thick, dense enough he could barely see his arm before him as he wandered about in the mist. What, specifically, he had to bring back hadn't been said... he'd just been pointed out at the field and told to 'go get 'em'. Very helpful information, that.
Eventually, he spotted a shape moving, a vague, wavering silhouette that seemed to appear and disappear in the span of seconds. He ran towards it, leaping when he thought he was close, arms outstretched with a harness stretched between them...
To find his hands latched on to thick fur and the thing he'd pounced on had started growling, teeth clenched tightly shut.
It was a wolf! A bloody howling wolf!

He wrestled with it, hanging on for dear life, creeping the lead over the wolf's head as it bucked and bounced, eventually rolling onto its side to dislodge him. Dekana managed to slip the lead on and yanked it hard, bringing the wolf around to face him.
The lead seemed to have settled it a bit as it stood there staring at him angrily, growling. He pulled on the reins experimentally but the wolf wouldn't budge... wouldn't do anything. The wolf even threw himself to the ground, resulting in Dekana dragging it several feet through the mud.
“Stubborn fellow aren't you!?”

The wolf continued to have itself be dragged, utterly refusing to move a leg to help him. Dekana shrugged and continued to drag him forward, at least until the wolf decided that what it really wanted was to spring up and dash forward, yanking Dekana forward a step or two, before planting its feet and bracing against the boulder they were passing.
It made absolutely no sense to Dekana. The wolf was almost stuck to the rock it was bracing against it so tightly... he half expected it to phase into the material!
He tugged once, twice, and then threw his weight into the effort, peeling the wolf from the boulder to drag it backwards back towards the stable.

He was pulling and yanking and cursing as the wolf fought him every step of the way. It had found a spot it could really immobilize itself in and had dug in, very nearly causing Dekana to drop or break the reins. The yap and snap of those teeth kept him from getting too close and he thanked his lucky stars for whatever magic was keeping the harness on the wolf's head – the beast was taller then him!

The war of attrition was broken, finally, when the wolf's claws cut through the mud and it lost its footing, slipping to slide along the moist muck. Dekana took full advantage of the stumble and ran with it, dragging the wolf a fair distance before it even had a chance to fight back.

It didn't like the sudden jolt forward. The wolf struggled to its feet and started pulling in the opposite direction, one step at a time, defeating Dekana's valiant efforts to move the large wolf. Eventually, Dekana gave up and walked over to the Wolf, smiled and, lengthening his talons, smacked that wolfbutt talons and all.

The Wolf howled and spun, ran a few steps then realized it wasn't a horse. Growling, it turned on Dekana and dropped low, aggressively circling the youth. The shadow panther gulped then grinned and let the underworld flow through him as he circled back, teeth bared, talons extended. The wolf wanted a fight? Just because he walked on two legs now didn't mean he'd forgotten how to fight – he was no push-over.

Their pre-fight dance ate up a surprising amount of space as they circled, sizing each other up, both ready to tear the throat from the other. Dekana had done his fair share if death dealing – he was, after all, a monster! And the wolf lived by the law of the wild... they were two facets of life, locked in combat.
At least until Dekana caught sight of the Stables and broke the fight off to yank the wolf unexpectedly, finding assistance in the form of a stable boy who helped push and prod and goad the wolf back into his stable. The howl of frustration and promise of venegence sent a chill down Dekana's spine but the job was done... finally.
For his trouble, the stable hand gave him a used saddle. Dekana looked at it, perplexed. What use was this?
