[ Predating disaster rps ]
Ami had never been late to work, never missed a day. In fact it was quite the opposite, she often worked over hours, long into the night and ended up falling asleep at her workstation. She loved her job and she loved the advancement of Deus Ex Machina more than she loved her personal life.
So when she didn't show up for three days straight, it certainly turned a few heads of those familiar to her.
When she did show up, it was disheveled at best. Ami was a punctual person, a precise person. Never a hair out of place or shirt untucked.
Now she was a grotesque alteration of her former self. No semblance of assembly, no fierce fire in her stare. Barely holding it together enough to walk to his office, she didn't knock as per usual, she didn't have a folder in her arms and an efficient air about her as per usual. Nothing was per usual anymore for her.
Ami trudged her way into his office, looking for the Doctor; her sole confidant in the matter.

He was busy at his notes, sketching lightly across a steno pad while referencing something old and in German, a large tome that had passed her hands from time to time with his requests. Glancing up, the doctor's eyes fixed on her and he quietly began to put everything away. "What happened?" His voice was quiet and strangely gentle.

"Please, don't stop your work," she insisted, her voice sounding much older and more tired than her appearance gave her to be.
What happened was harder to explain, and worse still to verbalize. "It is ... not important enough to warrant inefficiency," she said quietly, not wanting to waste her words, but still providing enough to explain.
Yet it was important enough to require personal visitation.

"I am, my dear, perfectly capable of prioritizing my own time and attention. I do, however, dislike having to repeat myself."

Another long suffering sigh (a very small part of her was thrilled by the theatrics of it all; something to channel her emotions into) and folded her hands neatly in front of her.
"It is a personal matter between myself and another party. Unimportant," she repeated, wanting to emphasize that word as though saying it multiple times would make it true.
She opened her mouth to begin a sentence and then closed it, almost as though she was erasing the words in her head and starting over. Ami didn't often stutter in her thoughts, but it was apparent she was having trouble verbalizing. Her emotional skills were rusty at best. What came out was quiet, unenthused. "I have worked here for two- no, no- three years and never requested time off that was extraneous, and I have never once asked for a favor that did not somehow expedite work or benefit the goals of the academy." Not hubris, but merit. "Therefore I'm ... using the following credentials to make a ... request." She stumbled on the word, unhappy in its use. "It is ... embarrassing to do so."

"How shockingly vulnerable, my dear," the doctor teased. Propping his chin on his fist, his posture relaxed. "Do go on."

"How typically blase," she mocked back, but there wasn't a bite to her words. There wasn't anything to her words.
"I wish to be sent away. For an indiscernible time. For any reason." Desperation. "I will return." How could she not? The idea that she would have somewhere to go beyond her library and her Doctor was laughable, fictitious. "But I would not like to be ... here right now." She gestured to the ground with open palms, as though the very spot she was standing in was cursed. It might as well have been.

The doctor raised his eyebrows, and then finally nodded. "I think I have something that would suit your skill set. It's been somewhat speculative so far, I'm afraid the field work may be intensive, but also incredibly rewarding. Potentially." Reaching into one of the desk's file cabinets, he went on. "There's been hints of a possible secondary Library of Alexandria. A secret back up, unlike the Serapeum."

Something resembling a light appeared in Ami's eyes, however small.
"It's perfect," she said, barely above a whisper. The Doctor always had such perfect arrangements. Those that said the Doctor was creepy would always get a cold shoulder from Ami. "The danger is irrelevant. When can I go?"

"Once you've arranged your work here to be covered in such a way that your absence isn't felt too keenly in the day to day functions of the library." The doctor handed the file, alarmingly thin, over to the huntress.

Ami's face paled slightly. "I would ... prefer not to." She wanted to leave without a trace, without an impact, without a word. Silent, like the cut to her chest.
"I imagine that is not an option, however." The file was thin. Something about the size should have tipped her off that it was potentially not an easy mission, but she was too grateful for the opportunity. She held the paper like it was gold, opening it to glance over what was inside.
"Thank you." It was rare that Ami expressed undisguised gratitude, despite how many times she had done it for the doctor. More quietly, she tacked on, "For everything."
