It appeared that the directions the previous villager had given to her were ones to … help out even more villagers. Edel was a little disappointed to see that they were nowhere near any point of interest, although a pressing problem decided to present itself to the pair... as well as the entire village from that matter.

The loud booming of the horn signaled that something was about to happen, and they did not have to wait long to find out that the village was under attack by a giant sand whale.

“Men to arms! Men to arms!” cried the village crier, and around them, the villagers began to assemble teams to bring out the ballistas to line the edge of the harbour.

A loud crash boomed through the air as the giant whale collided against the dock, sending a spray of sand everywhere. Ivar's coat had somehow found its way above them, deflecting most of the shower.

“You two, get to work!!” someone shouted as they dashed past them to join the village defense.

There was a slight moment of hesitation among the two, before the ghoul grabbed onto his arm and pulled him along towards the scene of the battle.

We'll make our getaway if the situation becomes too dire,” she promised with a serious tone to quell any protest. The pair made their way to a ballista and were issued instructions on how to use it. The contraption was simple enough to understand, though the ballista shots themselves were quite heavy. Wordlessly, Edel fashioned a simple ramp out of ice to ease the process of loading the shots.

Shall we?” she signaled to him.

The first shot was loaded onto the ballista, and upon the count of three it was fired into the air. Fortunately or unfortunately, the sand whale was of a size where it was impossible for the shot to miss despite flying waywards. A low whine resounded through the harbour as the first wave of attacks landed. Another spray of sand was sent flying, peppering their skin painfully, along with the ensuing blindness from the lack of visibility.

Coughing, the pair wasted no time brushing themselves off and instead loaded the second shot into the ballista.

“FIRE” the leader called, and the stone was sent catapulting into the side of the whale once more.

A pained wail rang through the air, and for a moment it appeared that the sand whale disappeared back into the depths of the sand ocean. Another shot was loaded onto the ballista in preparation, and they all waited, uneasy about the silence. There was an unspoken agreement that if in a few minutes or so, should nothing happen, they could assume that the sand whale had retreated. Yet they knew that the wail was one that sounded of agitation, and that there was a more likely scenario.

The ground began to shake, the tremors growing wildly to the point where it was hard to maintain ther balance. A large shockwave hit the ground, sending some falling to their feet. Edel and Ivar had grabbed onto the ballista to steady themselves, but they were hardly prepared for what they were about to witness.

More sand was sent flying into the air, and another scream pierced through the atmosphere. The sand whale had managed to beach itself on the harbour, sending waves of sand pouring into the village and drowning a few ballistas close by.

Ivar was all set to go, grabbing onto her arm tightly, and the ghoul too was ready to make their getaway. Amidst the sounds of chaos, a soft crying could be heard. Both Edel and Ivar set their eyes upon the sources of the cries of help, spotting a small cloaked villager that was being trapped in the debris of the wreckage.

I'll go-

No I'll go, stay and help the rest,” she pointed towards the scattering of villagers that were regrouping around the ballistas. The ghoul didn't give him time to protest before she set off, moving and weaving through the messy scene with relative ease. Stopping in front of the trapped villager, she willed a column of ice to emerge from the ground, lifting the broken pieces of a collapse ballista off them.

Reaching out a hand, she pulled them out. “Go,” she commanded, pushing them off into a safe direction. Edel must have realised that she had probably taken too long for the rescue mission, as she found a shadow cast over herself from the sand whale that loomed overhead. Instinctively, she formed a pair of ice spears, ready to put up what would most probably be a futile fight against the behemoth creature.

Something collided with the side of the sand whale's head as it was beginning to lunge down towards her, distracting the creature who let out a pained cry. Reacting to the opening, the frost demon made took a sharp turn to the right, escaping from the radius of the sand whale's attack. Another shot from the ballista connected with its target, and the sand whale had turned its full attention to the group that was responsible.

Rushing towards an abandoned ballista, Edel quickly loaded up a shot and sent it flying. With this attack coming from the opposite direction, the sand whale shook and turned around in confusion, unsure of which attacker to focus on.

The ghoul's actions had presented quite a spectacle which he was quite stunned to see. Directing the firing of the ballista shots, he was relieved to find that they had bought enough time for her to ensure the escape of the trapped villager. Ivar was mildly surprised to observe the ghoul run off in the opposite direction, though he would quickly understand the logic behind that decision.

With the sand whale distracted, another shot was loaded onto the contraption and hurled through the air, landing on its dorsal fin. There was a sharp CRACK, and a ear-splitting wail. Only after recovering from the temporary deafness would he realise that the sand whale had surely retreated, leaving behind a large broken fin as spoils of the battle. He couldn't quite say he was relieved, until he found the ghoul walking back towards him safe and sound.

Cheers erupted around them as the two stared at each other wordlessly and breathed sighs of relief. The joyful rapture, as it turned out, came from the fact that the village had now acquire some more food, albeit at a great expense. A small celebration was taking place, and the local butcher was there to divide up the giant whale fin amongst the villagers.

For participating in the battle, the two of them were handed a sizable chunk each, along with loud suggestions that it tastes very good raw. Unsure of the palatableness of the local cuisine, the two simply thanked them for their generosity, stowing the whale fin away for … later use.

Heading away from the sand harbour, the two set off to find a place to rest, preferably far, far away from any more danger.

I heard you were a trials champion,” the man broke the silence, “That was...quite impressive.

Don't,” she paused, recalling the less savory memories of that event. “Think too much about it,” she said, trying to change the subject. “How about we find some proper food for now?” she grinned, lightening her footsteps as she skipped on ahead.
