Mistral had spent most of her summer on her wonder or otherwise indoors. The heat hadn't used to bother her so badly, but with her kidney troubles (that being, she only had one kidney), it was best to avoid sweating, heat stroke, and dehydration. It had simply been too hot for her to be outdoors most nights, and that had set her back significantly on her work.

Not that she was feeling sorry for herself or anything like that, of course. Mistral very seldom allowed herself the luxury of pity.

The heat and humidity had broken - at least briefly - and it so happened that she was between wonder visits. The timer was annoying, but trying to defy it resulted in a splitting headache and not much else. It was an experiment for another day, once she had some of her other projects finished and out of the way. One thing at a time would see it all done well. So, stranded as she was, she harnessed up Mendel and headed to the streets.

Mistral would never be able to walk a beat like other knights, but she could circle the neighborhood and let her dog sniff at the neighbors' landscaping and call it a job well done. Perhaps she'd been wrong about the heat, she thought, as Mendel trotted circles in the ivy. There was sweat pooling at the back of her neck.

She tugged at her collar. These were ceremonial robes, meant for the cold valleys of Mercury. Not Destiny City, and certainly not in August.

.it wasn't that she didn't want to be out and powered up, she did in fact! It was a new...love, though perhaps that was too strong a word to use, for powering up. Perhaps it was due to having been to her wonder and to Polaris recently? Making a...friend? Though she understood why Polaris had vanished, and not contacted her, she still was displeased with it. But she had been to Delphi and for that she was glad to have had the other with her and she did want to get to know the other better...perhaps even become friend? it was an odd, and fairly new, concept to the Russian girl.

With the heat broken she could go out in her uniform, because this was not Polaris and the coat and uniform were not needed here. She wished, and wondered, if she couldn't just strip off the coat and perhaps the next layer of clothing so she was left in the tealish colored fabric. That would at least save her from some of the heat but tonight it wasn't so bad, tonight it was tolerable.

her thoughts, as she continued around the area, were proven wrong as she started to feel the heat build within her and a need to escape her uniform. It was why she stopped on a roof top to take off her coat and drape it over her arm. She could sense another knight and did want to seek them out, just to satisfy her curiosity, but first the coat needed to come off! This was not Polaris and this was not even winter!

As the heavy fabric came off and was draped over her arm she continued on her way till she dropped down to street level and rounding a corner spied a knight walking her dog...or a dog, maybe not hers. This was certainly odd and not what she expected. It was the reason for the Squire to stand there staring with a surprised look upon her face.

Mistral's thoughts at seeing the woman approaching her did not immediately go to squire. Perhaps there was a convention in town for Frozen cosplayers. She'd heard of conventions for weirder things. Auras didn't lie, however. "Mendel, heel," she said, and Mendel, being a very well-trained service dog, lifted his head from the ivy and trotted back to her side.

"Now there's an idea," she observed, eyes going to the coat folded over the squire's arms. "Layers. All the wonderful minds of ancient Mercury, and I'm naked under this"

Maybe she'd be able to have a hand in designing her uniform for her knight stage. After all, someone must have drafted these costumes once upon a time. Who was to say they couldn't change? The cosmic wardrobe department clearly had issues understanding weather appropriate as a broad concept. All her fancy Mercurean fabric did nothing for the fact that she was wearing fur.

"I'm Mistral," she said, and waited for the other squire's reaction. If she'd never heard of her, then good. Word of the labyrinth had spread far and wide. "Of Mercury. And it is too damn hot."

"Polaris...it's cold there but here." She trailed off. it was obviously not cold here, especially in the summer. She had the coat, the light vest and than the whole body covering outfit under that. Three layers was more than was needed. "The fur could be removed perhaps?" The fur about her neck, that would help a little - right?

Delphi was accepting of her uniform being inappropriate for the spring and summer here, and even most of the fall, but she was able to remove layers unlike Mistral. How difficult was it to have such a uniform where there wasn't layers to be removed. Whoever, or whatever, had designed these uniforms surely could redo them all to fit the planet they now all lived on - right? Or perhaps whatever had decided on such things was dead...? Long dead perhaps?

"Delphi, of Polaris." As she'd already mentioned the planet for which she was a knight. "It's too hot in this uniform as well, even without the coat." it was far too hot and uncomfortable and the coat just made it unbearable. Perhaps Polaris would know something about these uniforms and could use her magic, somehow, to alter Delphi's uniform to be something more...tolerable? But than it wouldn't hold up when she went to Polaris.

Mistral sighed. She could try ripping off the fur, but getting into the habit of pulling things off your uniform every time you powered up was a dangerous path that she did not aim to follow Sailor Gunn down. "It would ruin the look of the outfit," she said wryly.

"I should have realized," she said, looking the girl over. She'd never personally met a knight of Polaris before, but Babylon had told her to put their symbol on his alethiometer. "It's nice to meet you," she said, offering the squire her hand. "I've never met a knight of your order before. I'm curious - are your wonders on the star Polaris itself, or on a planet orbiting it?"

It seemed preposterous that wonders would be located on the actual stellar surface, but then, perhaps no more preposterous than being asked to believe that there were wonders beneath the clouds of Jupiter. If one, then why not the other?

At her side, Mendel flopped onto his belly, having clearly determined that they were not going anywhere anytime soon.

"Oh, but it would help with the heat..." Fur was a warm thing to have on, especially in the summer, it was why people wore it in ancient times in the winter - to keep warm.

Tilting her head she smiled. "Perhaps, I doubt there any many knights of Polaris." How many were there? She doubted there were many but she was rather clueless about this. Perhaps it was something to ask Polaris? But would she know, she had been absent from Destiny City for a year. So it was possible there could be several in the city which she didn't know about. Would she somehow be able to tell? A curious thing to ponder really.

"On the star Polaris. It's snow covered...I've only seen my own wonder. It's very cold, heavy coats, fur, and cloaks are a good idea there." She said while looking down at her own heavy coat. She had it for a reason even if it was a pain to deal with here on Earth in the summer.

"What about your wonder?" She also wanted to ask what it was but that was perhaps a personal thing, she could understand if it was - easily.

A snow covered star. How strange, thought Mistral, but then everything about this war flew flagrantly in the face of what earthlings thought they knew about science. It was her duty as heir to the labyrinth to pick up where her past incarnation left off, to let the circle be unbroken and continue their research. "I think," she said, a faint smile on her lips, "That I would like to go there sometime. I'm clearly already dressed appropriately for the weather."

"My wonder is the Great Labyrinth at Mistral," she said, choosing to omit the gory details. If Delphi had not already come by them on her own, then she was certainly not going to be the one to fess to such bloodshed. "It is built deep beneath a crater on Mercury, and it's full of research labs. My ancestors were all scientists, and I do the best I can to uphold their mantle."

Her eyes dropped to Delphi's hands. "Do you have your signet ring?" she asked. "I have an invention that improves upon them. No doubt you've noticed their limitations as a method of instant communication?"

Notably, that they were useless.

It was indeed an odd thing, nothing she'd questioned right away as she'd been too taken with being there and the sight of her wonder, but she had thought on it later when she'd arrived home that evening. She also knew that magic and the things they could do went against science, very much so, so she just put it under the same category as all the magic stuff.

"I can take you..." She didn't know why the words left her lips but they did so anyway. She had only just discovered it herself, and it was a dust and dirty mess, but the words came and she did mean them. She would take the other knight with her to Delphi, she was certainly dressed for it...though she might actually need a coat or something to be honest. "You might actually need another layer or two of clothing." She said after a moments thought, wondering if she would need another layer and concluding she likely would.

"A labyrinth of labs...that's interesting." She knew nothing about mercury or it's knights. Were they all the sort to do experiments and then what? Invent things based on findings? perhaps.

"Delphi are courts and two libraries, law books filled with the laws of everywhere else." All written in the same language, not something she could ever hope to decipher, but she knew it was all the same as she'd seen the same writing in several of the books she'd opened to page through. So someone, or a lot of people, had written all the books and filled them with the laws of every other planet so the people of Polaris could study them and put those laws to use as needed. It was like a center of law on Polaris as not only did it have the libraries but also the court buildings where the information in the books were put into practice. A shrine to law and it's practice perhaps.

She did, something small and silver with the center stone the color of a fine aquamarine stone. The carvings into the silver, and the stone, both lovely in her opinion although she could go without the carving into the center stone. "I've not yet used it. I've only just found it."

I am gonna have her get it in the rp I've got open with her now, with Polaris, but I've yet to hit that point. I've also got someone in shop working on the art for the ring for me. ::So not good at arts.::

Mistral eyed Mendel, considering the offer. "Perhaps not tonight," she said. It would probably be terrible for her reputation if she took her dog to a wonder and he decided to mark his territory everywhere. Mendel was well-trained, but some things were pure instinct. "My uniform is a sort of smart fabric, so I ought to be okay, but I don't like the idea of my dog freezing to death on an alien sun."

That just sounded un-fun all around.

"I understand how frustrating that can be," she added, changing the subject to keep up with Delphi. "I have access to every note ever written at Mistral, and I can read absolutely none of it." Well, some of it came more easily than others - she could at least recall having written some of it as Asimov. "Some of the greatest research ever done, and unless I can find someone to tutor me in ancient Mercurian dialects, it's useless."

She leaned forward to inspect Delphi's ring. "That's beautiful," said Mistral, reaching into her pocket. She pulled out a thin ring of wire with a loop at the top. "Here," she said, "This fits around the bezel, and then you can send voice messages and holograms."

"No, of course not." No, the idea of bringing a dog to such a freezing cold planet was not a good idea. So when the other mentioned it she didn't have an issue with that or her not going tonight. The mention of smart fabric however did catch her attention. "Smart fabric? If that means it can adapt to temperatures than hopefully it can handle a lot of cold." Russian cold and better. Polaris was a cold place, not that Winterlynn minded in the slightest bit. She liked the winter so it was perfect for her really. She also wanted to clean up Delphi, at least a little bit, before bringing people there.

"Yes, I'd have to learn a dead and alien language as well and Polaris herself can't read it." So how hopeless of a cause was it? Not that it was technology she'd be learning but law, not that she was interested in it, but it would be nice to learn anyway and leaf through the books from time to time. "There should be a way to translate things. I'm sure not every knight, from every planet spoke or read all the languages available and yet encountered them." Wouldn't it have been smart to have some form of a translator? Even if it was equivalent to goggle translate? She's seen how that butchered the Russian language and even that she'd be willing to accept.

Letting the other inspect her ring she felt herself swell a little bit with pride, to have someone compliment it was nice. Watching what Mistral pulled out she nodded as she explained the new add on. "That makes sense, it'll be helpful. Is this something from you or your planet?" She might as well ask, it was a very good bit of magical equipment.

Mistral nodded at the idea of a translator. "I'm sure that there's a way to translate things," she said. After all, she'd built things in her lab that others had surely thought impossible - for starters, the communications device that she was now applying to Delphi's ring. Or Babylon's alethiometer, a device that probed the fabric of the universe to predict the impossible. Just because Mistral didn't personally have the time to devote to the project didn't mean it couldn't be done.

"A long time ago," she said, fitting the wire into place around the ring, "it was my knighthood project. The thing that would prove me worthy of my birthright. But the Negaverse rebellion made things unsafe, and I was sent to Earth before I could finish it." Asimov's indignation burned in her throat, twelve years old and full of rage at the prospect.

"When I returned to my wonder, I found the blueprints, and all of my notes. The parts were fabricated - they just needed to be recovered."

She swallowed back an awkward lump that was forming in her throat - she was not going to talk about her labyrinth here, about all the deaths it held. "So I finished it. It's a bit from my wonder and a lot from me."

She handed the ring back.

"Try it out," Mistral suggested. "Try calling me."

"Ah, so that of the past being applied now. I doubt that I could do that with anything at my wonder." Being all law books and court buildings with how many rooms for trials of all sorts, she wasn't about to count the number of court rooms and judges chambers found at her wonder - it was likely too many. She doubted anything found there could be useful here and now.

"I'm glad that it's finished now and can be applied to the rings of knights here and now." It would make communication easier for them all, as it seemed like it would not be such an easy thing otherwise.

"The blueprints must have been written, or drawn, out where you could understand it. That is a good thing." Unlike her wonder where books were all in whatever language she'd once spoken. One day maybe a translator of sorts could be invented, or found, and she could translate the books and perhaps it would help other senshi or knights if they wanted to reestablish things. She thought Polaris might like to see such books translated, to learn of the laws and other things which might escape her at present.

"I would like to find some translator. I think it would help everyone." Yes, it would indeed help everyone. "Until then however, this is a nice piece of technology." Indicating the band around her ring. "Do I just call out your name and then talk?"

"I could remember writing the notes," said Mistral, "which made it easier - it would probably have been nearly impossible without that. And it was still... very hard." So many deaths. She would carry that on her soul until the end of her days - but it was a private burden, not something to spread around until her good name was well and truly trashed.

"I might be able to help with translation issues at a later date," she said, "But right now my plate is rather full..." The chivalridex would be finished when it was finished and not a moment sooner, and it would likely be thankless work until then (and after).

Looking back towards the ring, she said, "Yes. You just speak the name of the person you're calling, and then your message."

Sleet Tempest Snape
PostPosted: Fri Aug 28, 2015 11:30 pm

"I see..." At least she'd had those memories in order to help her. She had, thus far, no memories of her past life and so had no ability to decipher anything that was at her wonder. One day she might be able to though - she could hope.

"You think a translator could be invented?" She asked surprised and stared at the other. If she thought one could be invented, especially if they could make one, that was more than impressive. "If you think we can...I'd like to help work on it, whenever you're free of course. I can bring something from my wonder, a book, to help when it's time." She had flipped through a few and they were in the same language so she was assuming it was the language of Polaris but she could be wrong. She'd check other books...maybe find other books not at her wonder, books normal people might have in their homes, in order to be sure on it.

"Ok...that's easy enough." Looking down at the ring, feeling a bit foolish, she took a moment before speaking the others name. "Mistral." The name spoken and a pause before she continued. "Thank you for your help."

"I think it's worth a try," said Mistral, not wanting to oversell herself. If she left some uncertainty, it would be more impressive when she was successful - or less of a fall when she wasn't. "I've invented plenty of things that people tried to tell me were impossible. If you think about the basic mechanism you'd like to work with, then I'd be happy to help you out."

She raised her ring, nodding to the tiny hologram of Delphi that appeared before her. "Delphi," she replied, "You're very welcome."
