Jack gazed at the door, still as a lanky scarecrow, until Abbi finally peeled away and joined Dawson. Then he dragged a hand across his face, stretched his eyelids until it hurt, and then gathered his things. Three cups of coffee that day and he still felt like he had pulled an all nighter without a pick me up at all, stuck in the awful combination of an active mind and a tired body. For once, he couldn't think ahead, couldn't plan, couldn't anticipate. All he could focus on was the now and the immediately upcoming, and what either meant for his wellbeing. It was a little like survival mode, though thankfully without starvation or dehydration or blood loss like the past.

And right now, that meant only thinking about finding Dr. H.

With his bag slung over his shoulder, Jack ducked out of his room and made lengthy strides towards the man's office, fiddling with his new haircut when the building's cold air teased it.

The doctor was asleep on his couch, neat stacks of paper covering nearly every other horizontal surface.

He'd been so focused on what he was going to tell the lead that for a moment Jack was dumbstruck at the image before him. Sometimes it became too easy to think of people like Dr. H as above mundane acts like sleep. The humbling reminder didn't assuage him now.

All but holding his breath, Jack crouched and scanned what he could make out on the documents surrounding him, curious even in the midst of his personal crisis of what would occupy the doctor's mind. Or maybe it was a calming exercise, something to force his heart to slow down. He didn't know.

The language and physical state of the papers denoted that they were old. Some, indeed, were very old. There was a scroll in one corner and its language was not one that had ever been belonged to this world. The doctor's own hand could be seen here and there, footnotes and corrections and diagrams in his distinct style.

They were very obviously part of the program he'd been working on the past few years, but very likely outside of Jack's own clearance with that program. When he looked up next, he'd find the doctor's eyes watching him, bright and strange in the dim of the office.

Somewhere, what scant guessing and information he found was filed away. He lifted his head and caught the doctor's eyes, and for a moment he couldn't help but wonder--but that was paranoia talking.

"I wouldn't bother you if I didn't think this was important, sir," Jack said as he straightened up, careful not to disturb the papers. "It involves Merlin. I thought it was best to go straight to you about it." He motioned with a silent question about the lights.

Every mention of the name was like a sharp knock on the door, a briefly violent rattle of the gate. At this last utterance, the presence tied to that name finally put down its pen and paid attention.

Elsewhere on the island, others would shift uncomfortably. Some would understand the change in the air, the familiar weight of his regard. There would those who would gain a sense of purpose and direction from it, still more would simply be sick with the stress of it and trying not to buckle under that weight.

In the dorms, the clone of one America Jones would look up from her magazine, expression turning from shock to distress as she reached for her phone.

The second clone, the cousin and messenger, would feel his pulse pick up. The hand of power that had created him was pulling at his attention. Be ready.

In the basement of the life labs, Dr. Stephen began to whistle along the otherwise empty corridor. Seven was the first to hear it, head snapping alert like a dog. It was the first of Obadiah Thompson's clone to begin working. It could not say the word out loud, but the violence of motion and emotion lent power and focus to the rune it carved.

Bashmet's confession and its precautions has the doctor still in the motion of sitting up. A beat and then a quiet order, "Quickly."

"A suspected clone approached Chel and bribed her with freedom from Deus if she killed you," Jack explained, his own sense of urgency evident. "In the most recent legacy vision, her knight received powers from Merlin. The clone stated she still had access to those, so I placed her in quarantine as a precaution before coming to you." And then a tense silence, a bleak hope for some sort of explanation of measure against the madness.

The doctor was up and striding to the door in a matter of moments, "The first was a decoy, who is the second clone? Axten or..." He turned his head, "Summon your weapon, Jack."

Below them, deep in the basement levels, seven runes began to glow as Dr. Stephen entered the elevator.

"Axten." His sword was summoned as he side stepped away to let the doctor through, already white knuckling the handle. The green smoke perpetually leaking from its lock gave both of their faces a ghastly glow. The idea of fighting off one, maybe more clones, was hard enough to brace for; bastards were difficult just to fend off. But the idea that it might be Chel—

"Why are they targeting you, sir? Is there anywhere we can go to secure your safety?"

"I am the most powerful force behind hunter progress and the most vulnerable," the doctor explained quietly, voice plain and without the usual personality. "But more tellingly, they're using clones. The connection to my current work is undeniable."

The infirmary elevator opened, revealing Dr. Stephen, his smile bright and warm even with his weapon drawn. The rapier looked very small next to Owain, laughably so.

"Jack," the man drawled, "we'll take ya in, y'know. Y'helped a lot already, n'the kingdom pays its debts. Alla them."

His weapon glowed fiercely, already holding a full charge.

He remember distantly from that meeting. Personal projects. Perhaps the jibbering, paranoid clone wasn't such a stretch now that he felt another layer pile up inside. He'd given H that knowledge. He'd willingly taken that information from an unknown entity under dubious circumstances. He, just like Chel, had made a selfish, desperate move that was coming back to haunt him. Everyone.

Maybe she was right. Maybe they were honestly made for each other.

He faced Dr. Stephen with a neutral expression and lifted his weapon in defense, bracing for the inevitable. "With what?" he asked, and it almost could have been curious. Demanding. Debts were always an interesting subject. "More bloodshed? What has he ever promised other than destruction and subjugation?"

"The removal of obstacles," Stephen gestured toward H and then more broadly, encompassing Deus as a whole. So many saw it as a prison, as a punishment. It was a place that made one question the values of morals, of self worth. It was a place where you could try and try and try and all you got for your efforts were a few scars and a new set of nightmares. For most people, it simply wasn't what they signed up for.

"He's a good ally to have and an enemy that will follow to any one of a dozen hells to spite those who cross him."

The doctor didn't speak, head bent and eyes focused on a distant point.

"A good ally that so far has ******** up people I know," Jack argued, eyes narrowing. "That hasn't been treating Chel well for s**t when she was the one who went to him in the first place."

"I would hope both you n' Chel woulda learned a valuable lesson in both the keepin' of a deal and a bit of discretion t'go along," Stephen countered with a smile. "But I'll admit, the fault began with the choice of avatar."

The man shifted into a striking position, "So that's a no, then?"

He couldn't try lunging first; no doubt the rapier would easily bypass him in speed. The bulk and length of the zweihander was his best defense now to keep Dr. H alive.

Jack braced his other hand on the back of the blade. "That's a work on your sales pitch, ******** class="quote">
