Pearl:
"You're such a wuss, Obsidian!" A feminine hiss rang out before Pearl slipped out of the cat door and into the back yard. Her boots clicked against the back porch, getting worse when she stomped them. There was a whole in the back fence, behind one of the bushes. She'd wanted to go through it, just for a bit, to see what was outside of their little house. All she'd ever seen was the house, the petstore, and the bloody vet! Well, besides that one fantastic day their caretaker had taken them sailing but that was a lifetime ago. She wanted to see more than just this before she grew old and fat.
Okay, old, but she would certainly never grow fat.
But her dear, beloved brother would never join her. He, on the other hand, would probably get fat someday. He was already starting to grow a little pudgy if she had anything to say about it. She made a mental note to do just that when she was done having her breath of fresh air.
"I'll chase him around the house, then we'll see who doesn't want to go outside," she grumbled under her breath and stomped down the small set of stairs to the cool grass. She always liked it out here, especially at night. The sky was mostly purple not, barely any light left to speak of but for the lights from houses, streetlamps, and the decorative lighting John had lined the backyard paths with.
She walked along one of the paths until she came to her favorite part of the gardens. There was a two-tiered display of flowers elevated with thin cinder blocks, and next to it was a little pond complete with lily pads and a couple of lazy koi fish.
Pearl sat down on the edge of the pond, careful of her skirt. She removed her hat and set it to one side before she stretched out on her side, trailing her fingers through the cold water. If her brother followed her - which he wouldn't - he'd see her as she was, her fire-red hair fanned out over her arm and the greenery. Any other cat would just see a lean female trailing her paw in the water, her fire-colored tail flicking back and forth.
"There's nothing wrong with adventure," she grumbled under her breath.
Spike:
He shoved his hands into the black jeans he wore. His heavy boots echoing off the pavement. His heavy leather duster billowed behind him, the fabric reflecting the moonlight, and catching the glow of all the streetlights. The same glow caught on his white-blonde hair, slighed back neatly on his head.
His removed one hand, trailing the fingers past fencepost after fencepost, removing a cigarette from his pocket. Placing the box back, he lit it, taking a deep drawl. Exhaling, he relaxed, and wondered what the night would hold for him. It had been uneventful at best, but that didn't mean much. Though the sound of water caught his ears. He wouldn't mind a quick drink. He'd hop the fence and be gone before anyone knew he was there. Leaping over, cigarette clenched tight in mouth, he stood back up.
"Oh." He stopped, noticing a white and soft orange cat lazing by the water he had been looking for.
Bloody Hell.
Pearl:
Pearl's ears twitched when she heard something hit the fence. she was quick to turn and look around, sitting up. Or, at least sitting up most of the way.
Blue eyes narrowed on a very dark figure, another cat, dressed mostly in black. While she tended to like the color, herself, that was perhaps overdoing it a little bit.
"Can I help you with something?" Was her tone prim? That was laughable considering she was rarely ever a proper lady, but she was in a mood tonight. She'd wanted adventure and her brother had let her down. She didn't need some other cat to come waltzing in and ruin a perfectly good evening of moping abo- hang on. Her thoughts collected themselves from the angry tangle they'd been in as she considered the strange cat a second time. It'd been a long time since she's seen another cat besides Obi. Meeting a new cat certainly qualified, even if it was just a little adventure.
She should be nicer.
Spike:
She spoke, and a sly grin escaped his face. Oh so she was a firecracker, eh? No matter, he'd had run ins with firecrackers many a time.
"You were sitting next to a fancy pond of water that was looking marvously delicious, pet. You can help me by being a good little girl, and let me have a taste." He said, walking closer, almost in a stalking manner, but he wasn't going to harm her. Harming her would prove no benefit, and he wasn't in the mood anyway.
He walked over to the stones, leaning over, and cupping a mouthful in his hand. The fish tempted him, and he felt himself fighting the urge. If she let him drink, he wasn't going to eat the fish.
Once he was done, he took a deeb breath, and looked up at her with ocean teal orbs.
"What's your name, pet?"
Pearl:
Pearl settled back down, propping her chin up on one paw. The small silver bell on her pink-ribboned collar tinkled with the movement.
"I'm a little girl?" she asked, her head tilting slightly. "By all means, have a drink. Don't let my presence stop you."
She watched him drink, keeping a careful eye on him. Oh, yes, he noticed the fish. They seemed to stare back at him and get caught between shyness and curiosity.
"I'd ask that you leave the fish alone. My caretaker is rather fond of them," she said with a sigh, as if she had personal experience with what happened if a koi disappeared.
Well... There used to be three in there.
"Pearl. And yours?"
Spike:
"You're little to me." He said with a shrug. He looked over her fur, noting how pretty and well kept it was. She looked like a similar breed of his own. It made him curious.
He took the dry hand holding the cigarette, and took another puff off of it.. Blowing it in the opposite direction of her.
"Spike." He said, finding himself grinning at the sigh. She had tempted them before, eh? That made his tail flicker at the thought. Maybe she wasn't that innocent little sweetheart her face told of her.
She was also a pet, and he noted the pretty gem on her collar.. Blood red stone beaming like rabbits blood on snow. It made him bite his lip.
"Why are you outside out at night? Isn't a bit too late for a housecat?"
He knew the types that were out at night... Look at him for example.
Pearl:
Pearl snorted.
"I do hope you're joking. It's the best time to come out. Nice and cool, no people around wanting attention. And..." She trailed off for a moment, closing her eyes. Her ears twitched in the quiet. Or, perhaps the lack of quiet because sounds filled the night air. The soft trickle of water from the filter in the pond. Crickets. Frogs. In the distance the soft drone of traffic. No yelling from kids playing, no dogs barking at the mailman, no birds going on and on. It was glorious.
"The atmosphere is just so much... sweeter. Don't you think?" she finally said and opened her eyes again. Her head tilted with her question, wondering if he would agree with her. Sure, she liked being awake during the day sometimes. Hector was fun to play with and she did like the movies he liked to watch. But the night was when she truly felt content and awake.
Spike:
So she was like him. He didn't do anything in the daytime. Night was far superior. Something about the cool night air, and the cover of darkness. He cocked his head, listening to her.
"Yeah. I do." He said, accent heavy in his words. His mouth fixed in a small smirk.
"Frankly you won't catch me around at all during the day. I don't tolerate it well." He mused, tail flickering back and forth, brushing against the grass and stone wall of the pond.
Hunting was better, stalking was better, sex was better.. Everything was better in the cover of moonlight.
Pearl:
Pearl chuckled a little.
"Oh, I wouldn't go that far. At the very least I have to be awake when my human feeds us, otherwise I can almost guarantee my brother will eat my portion as well," she replied with a shake of her head. Maybe Obi wouldn't, but she wouldn't put it past him.
"And, besides, the kid isn't too bad. He can be fun to play with and likes to get us catnip toys." She shrugged. Hector really was nice. She liked him a lot, even if he did get carried away sometimes. But, hey, could she blame him? He was young and he'd be young for a while to come. At least he didn't pull their tails like some children did when they had come into the pet store. Hector had always been mostly good with them.
Spike:
"Ah but see that's the problem." He said. "Your first mistake is you need to be awake to be fed by a human." He grinned a little, stretching his arms legs out in front of him.
"I don't rely on anyone to feed me. Sun be damned." He looked at her darkly, wagging an eyebrow at her. He had been a housepet once. A show cat even. He'd never say so though. Those days were long since gone, and he didn't particularly feel he was the same cat that had sought everyone's approval way back when.
"Pretty thing like you, love? I think you'd like the freedom, tell you the truth."
He certainly wasn't a good influence, and he usually wasn't exactly carrying the best of intentions. But he hated seeing a cat cooped up in a home with people. People did nothing cats couldn't do for themselves if they tried.
Pearl:
"I have plenty of freedom, so you'll have to be more specific on what you're suggesting," Pearl replied, her eyes narrowing slightly as she watched him. She felt a little bit of it. The taste of adventure. Sure, she had considered running away in the past. Of leaving the house and humans behind. But... if she was truly honest with herself, she was a coward. a smart one, but a coward nonetheless. She didn't want to leave this place without her brother. She'd never been without Obsidian and she didn't want to go out into the world and be alone.
And for that matter, she knew that she had little idea of how it worked out beyond the fences. Yes, she could fish, but she'd never successfully hunted before. Birds had certainly always been beyond her. Yes, she knew how to steal, and she was quite good at it too. Rather befitting of a pirate lady. But she didn't know where to go looking outside of her house's kitchen. She didn't know what places were safe and where to avoid.
All around, it just wouldn't be a wise decision.
Spike:
Spike grinned again, leaning forward and getting inches from her face. His eyes under dark lashes as his voice was low.
"Pearl, are you really going to have me believe you don't already crave adventure. Freedom can entail many things. But being behind a fence? That's captivity."
He laughed low in his chest, leaning back and taking another puff of the cigarette that was about burned out. He ashed it on the stone, pocketing the butt. Normally he'd just toss it, but he wasn't that stupid to do it here.
"It's not as hard as you think. And if you asked reaaally nicely, I might even help a little bird like you out." He grinned again, and couldn't hide the playful tone in his voice. Though behind the playful sound, there was suggestion.
Pearl:
Her eyes narrowed when he leaned close, but it was far from an angry look. It was curious, thoughtful, and perhaps even a little bit flirty. She was completely awful. First male she'd seen that wasn't her brother and she was letting him charm her into danger. Because there was no denying that what he offered was dangerous. She'd be putting her well-being in his hands if she left with him, adventure or no.
Pearl finally sat up and curled her tail around her paws, the tip flicking slightly.
"Would you lie to me and say it was easy?" she asked, one eyebrow rising slightly with the question. Because she knew it wouldn't be. Easier than she thought, perhaps, but living on your own paws couldn't be easy, either.
Spike:
He scoffed, rolling his eyes, and hanging his head back dramatically.
"Nooo." He then righted himself. Bringing his legs to him indian style, and leaning forward on his elbows he gave her a look.
"Do you really want to live easy? Adventure isn't easy, pet. It's why it's such an unobtainable dream to so many. They aren't willing to make those hard decisions."
"But yes. I lie.. Just not about this. I'm a bad, rude man." He grinned, wagging his eyebrows before sitting back on his hands, and stretching his legs back out.
"Too pretty to be cooped behind a window, I do know that."
Pearl:
Well, he wasn't sugar-coating it. At least she could trust that.
Pearl stood and walked around him, committing him to memory.
"You'd lie to me?" she asked, and went so far as to flick her tail briefly beneath his chin. All things considered, that wasn't much incentive to run off with him. But she couldn't help smiling. It seemed like he was teasing her.
Still...
Pearl looked away, back to the house where her owner's bedroom light was on. He read before bed, every night. The smile was chased away.
"I would need to think about it. Would you give me a couple of days?" At the very least she didn't want to leave with the last words to her brother having been in anger.
Spike:
He grinned a lopsided grin when she asked if he'd lie to her. Pretty eyes locked onto his curiously. He winked at her in response. He lied to everyone if it suited him. But he didn't see why he'd need to lie to her, right now anyways. But he wasn't going to tell her he never would. That wasn't his style.
She asked for a couple days, and he looked at her with a furrowed brow. Staring at her for a moment, in silence, as if taking in what it was being asked. Would he come back? Well she was pretty.. and he could almost feel the longing of adventure in her. He liked to live a little wild, it was something that made him feel alive. Especially after so many people having walked all over him before.
"I'll give you two days, pet." It's not like he had anywhere to be, but he couldn't promise he wouldn't wander.. Get too far away and be unable to turn back on a whim.
"I think you have it in you though, love. I wouldn't try to get you to come with me if I didn't.. And I'm not lying about that either." He chuckled, leaning forward and rubbing under her chin, the fur soft on his hand.
Pearl:
Two days. Two days to play with Hector for the last time, two days to spend time with Obi, to be the sweetest she'd ever been in her life. He'd probably think she was plotting his death.
She purred when he ran his hand under her chin, her eyes fluttering closed.
"Then I suppose I'll see you again the night after tomorrow, Spike," she sighed when she stepped back and opened her eyes again. Pearl gave him a small smile and turned away, sauntering back towards the house, her tail flicking back and forth.
Perhaps she would go upstairs once she got back into the house. Yes, that sounded like a good plan, go upstairs and sit with her owner while he read. Perhaps even go so far as to stay there for the rest of the night.
Spike:
"I suppose you shall." He responded, pulling hand back and chuckling. He straighted his jacket over his shoulders, loosening his shoulders, and then turned.
Making quick work of the fence, he looked back in her direction, watching her swagger off. He smiled, winking in her direction once again.
She was going to make a good companion, and he would have to think of some fun for them to have together. He imagined it wouldn't be too complicated either.
Leaping off the fence, he began walking back down the street, heavy boots thundering across the pavement once more. The street lights flickered, and he gave a cocky smirk.. Yes, he would like it here.
