Quote:
A sand whale has been spotted nearing the village sand harbour!. These creatures are extremely unfriendly and have been known to swallow entire buildings. Ring the gong, fire bombs, throw ballistas, do what you can to stop the sand whale!

- The sand whale has 200/200 HP. When it hits 150 HP it will leave and swim away.

- At the start of the battle roll 1d6. This is the amount of ballista shots your character gets. Every time you use a ballista shot, you do a perfect 10 HP damage.

- The sand whale does an automatic -1 damage to you every time you attack the sand whale.

gaia_star If you thwart the sand whale it drops a whale fin, it is considered a quest item. Add it to your quest item list

His fingers stung. He supposed it was the least he could expect after climbing a mountain. Not for the first time Bren wished he had some sort of healing magic, but all of his first aid stuff was back in his room and he was useless without his things. He thought very seriously about sitting, but it seemed any relaxation or recuperation activities were to be thwarted by yet another guy in a cloak, this one screeching about whales.

"If I help will you fix our bus?" he asked, his question lost in the shrieks which only got louder as he tried to walk away.

When he gave in a couple of minutes later and headed off in the direction the cloaked creature pointed, Brenley was surprised to find a wide area devoid of fog at the end of his trek, complete with a large, angry beast. After a bit of searching, he found a heap of ballista bolts, but no ballista. Now all he had to do was figure out how to lure the thing. Or... talk to the beast, but he presumed he was meant to murder it.

She was starting to wonder if those cloaks were, like, an excuse to hide horrible fashion sense. Maybe her stolen clothes theory from before wasn't so farfetched after all...

After all, apparently sand whales existed in this miserable little place. Sure! Sand seas, why not. It actually sounded cool as a concept--much less so when she trudged to the harbor and noted the ominous wave patterns left behind by the scouring beast. But hey, no worries about falling off cliffs or mountains, right? And no fog either, surprisingly. Piper rubbed at her arms and happily left the chilly stuff behind.

So how did the people fend this thing off anyway? Scanning about, she could only find bit heavy...ballista, right? She remembered having to help load them as a knight...And next to them was--

"B-Ren! Ayyyyyyy~"

Not the nervous wreck from before, and no longer tainted by ink, Piper pranced over to the bolts the boil had found with her usual smirking smile. "They got you t'do this too? Here, lemme help." Just act casual. Yup. Totally.

Maybe heft more bolts than she needed, three under each arm. So strang.

"You seen a thing we could shoot the stuff out of, nerd?"

He jumped a little at Piper's voice, turning his attention away from the distant sand whale just as it seemed to perk up and notice them. It sank below the surface, giving Brenley plenty of time to stand there and stare at her awkwardly. He had a lot of questions. A lot a lot. But she was smiling and acting so normal that maybe it didn't matter that she had secrets. Maybe it would be enough to fight a sand shark together and pretend that nothing had changed. After all, he had secrets too. Nerdy ones, but still.

"Hey! Piper! Yeah... they... I was trying to find the bus crash again and someone asked me to come help with this. We are supposed to shoot it, right? Because no one told me..."

He shrugged, squinting as he searched the horizon for the actual ballista. "There." He grabbed a bolt of his own, only managing to pick up three more before he couldn't lift another. "You've been training?" he ventured. An innocuous question, or at least he hoped so.

"Better than that!" she crowed as they made their way towards the cannon-shooting-thingamabob-who-cares-about-names. "I'm a hob now! Went through a crazy maze thing, fought a shadow me, the works."

Was she flexing her arms? Maybe. (They weren't actually any different than before, but maybe Brenley forgot.)

"But yeah, like, what else are we supposed to do? Throw them?" Actually, maybe she could show off...Wait, no, probably a bad idea. That sand whale looked pretty big...She really didn't want to invite more trouble on her head just yet. "You wanna do the honors?"

A hob! That was great news! Bren grinned widely with secondhand pride, but the mention of mazes and doppelgangers soon brought back memories of his own test. It had, quite frankly, scared the crap out of him.

"Congratulations are in order then," he said, smiling a bit less cheekily. "You'll have to tell me more when we're not killing sand whales." Speaking of...

Despite her flexing—which he would pretty much always find impressive, but not for strength-related reasons—he took her up on her offer, dropping most of his bolts so he could focus on loading one. Then he aimed and fired, nodding in approval when he hit the whale on its back. Yes, yes, very good.

"It's easier than I would have thought. Why isn't it coming over here?"

Was her perking too obvious? She hoped not. "I'll give you the dirty deets over dinner," Piper told him with a smirk. "You still owe me from when I beatcho a**." From a fight that was almost two years ago, but whatever. She couldn't even remember if dinner was an actual part of that bet or not.

Deciding to continue being a little impulsive for the fun of it, the ghoul stuck two of her bolts into the cannon, a tight fit but one she felt was doable. Launching them, she watched as they smacked in midair and diverted to opposite paths—the whale was so large, though, that it didn't matter.

"Hells yeah!" Piper cheered. "We 2spooky is why, Bren. These village creeple apparently don't have the stones to man this thing, so they're lucky we broke down nearby, huh."

He laughed at her egregiously dangerous ballista handling, an actual unaffected snort that he couldn't hold back. Then, just as quickly and unthinkingly, he ruined any sense of comfort he had built up since the crash.

"I've missed you, Piper." He'd missed her hair malfunctions and her flexing and her nicknames and... looking at her. He'd missed that a lot, and now that she was here, admitting as much made Brenley feel completely idiotic. His gaze fell to the bolts as he hurriedly chose another and loaded it into the ballista. He swallowed as he hit the creature again, continuing to stare at it as if watching it bellow was the most engrossing thing he had ever laid eyes on.

"But, yeah," he told the whale, his tone light. "You never did cash in. We can go wherever you like whenever you want." To be honest, he didn't recall if dinner had been part of the bet either, but there was no way he was arguing it hadn't been, even if he wanted nothing more than to sink into the sand at the moment. "You're up."

She paused as she picked up another ballista bolt, and in the silence one could hear the slight jingle of her jewelry right before Brenley fired the fourth one into the sand whale. After an owlish blink, Piper reacted without thinking; she gave his arm a not so light punch and laughed. The action itself, coupled with Brenley's intensely focus look elsewhere, were both familiar enough that it doubled the butterflies nesting in her stomach.

"Well, good."

Trying to hide the wave of whatevertheheckthisis that went through her, Piper maybe too quickly loaded her bolt before firing. It seemed to be the lucky one too: the whale made a muffled bellowing noise before disappearing from sight, leaving a few things in its wake she couldn't quite make out.

"You see that?" she asked Brenley, already moving past him excitedly to go check out their spoils. Piper's mind was on the great things found as a knight--maybe something similar awaited them?

Not really, as she would soon learn.

"Y... yes," Brenley replied, standing up on his toes as if he might better tell what the distant items were from a vantage point two inches higher than normal. He dropped his next bolt and hurried after her, relieved that a dying whale of all things had set things right again.

"What are they?" he asked, unable to tell even when he was right on top of them. "Parts of that thing?" If so, he wasn't quite sure he wanted one.

"O-M-J. Is that..." She leaned over and took a sniff, then immediately recoiled back and gave a disgusted yelp at the almost physical offense to her senses. "THE WHALE LITERALLY SHED SOME OF ITS JACKIN' FINS OFF EW EW EW!"

Piper skittered behind Brenley, on the tips of her bare toes as her whole body shuddered as if the very sand they were on was now as tainted as the village itself. "Breeeeen, pick them up and go clean them," she whined, making a face over the fact that she was apparently doomed to lackluster loot.

He almost laughed, hiding it behind his hand as he cleared his throat. Sure the whale parts were gross—especially that smell—but overall they were no worse than some of the other things he'd touched in the name of science.

"I've got them, don't worry," he said, holding back the smile that went with his laugh. "I don't know where to clean them, but I'll carry them until I find someplace." Bren pinched the fins off of the ground, holding them well out in front of him.
