This is a private roleplay between ~Kiana_Nala~ and Heras Box. Please do not post without their permission. Note: Chimelu is trying to figure out what he wants to be when he "grows" up.

Chimelu wasn't entirely sure why he had wandered into Jauhar territory after his trip to Oba to see the boat head off into the unknown with a bunch of alkidikes aboard. His recent travels were a new and exciting experience for him, however, he had quickly realized that these areas were hot. That word wasn't doing the land justice but it would do for now. He carried a small bag with him that carried meager supplies and a bow that was hooked over half of his body. During the last battle and in the Oban war he had used a bow to fight with but there had always been this curiosity to attempt his skills with a crossbow.
What had kept him from doing so? He didn't get to use his bow skills often, a crossbow didn't seem easy to reload and shoot from when in a battle and he wasn't too sure how to get his hands on one. Sure, he could have bought one but the one's he usually found were too expensive for what could be a passing interest. Again, he didn't get to use his skills that often to make it worth buying one. Chimelu and his family moved around a lot so the traveling salesmen weren't too cheap with weapons.
Chimelu gently sighed as he began to find himself surrounded by more and more people. Had he entered town? It didn't escape his notice that there seemed to be a lot more alkidikes here than he had thought. He had more or less assumed that most of them lived on the island. Chimelu didn't know too much about anyone beside the wind tribes and the occasional ice tribesman so it wasn't hard to believe that he knew next to nothing about alkidikes. In fact, he had met his first one in the battle. She had been really nice and made him interested in meeting others in the future. "Oh wow!" Chimelu said with some slight excitement laced into his words. He came to a halt in front of a stand that had a larger array of weapons than Chimelu had ever seen before. There were of course his interested areas--bows and crossbows. The latter was a lot more affordable here too.

The trip that others took to see the Alkidikes off was missed by her. She'd been recovering from a minor head wound. Mostly just to ensure it didn't get infected. After dallying a bit in Sauti she finally had made the trip across Tale and into Jauhar. Ming'we wanted to find Isolder. To let him know that she hadn't left him. By the time she had reached a small town she had run low on bolts for her crossbow. Hazards of warding off bandits and hunting for her own food. So Ming immediately went in search of a seller of weapons. They would have what she needed. It didn't take long. Once the stall was located she moved toward it about the same time she heard someone exclaim "Oh wow!" Amusement showed on her face at the excitement but she said nothing to the person. Instead her attention went to the table so that she could inspect the crossbows and ammunition for it. With her own weapon held unloaded in one hand she picked up bolts in another to look them over. When she finally found the style she liked she addressed the seller. "Excuse me, could I please have fifteen of these bolts." With her order placed she dug into small purse to pull out the payment.

Chimelu had stood enamored by the crossbows that hung on the back of the stall, just out of his reach. Those were of course the nicer ones which cost a lot more than the others which were situated a little closer to the customers that came by to look at them. At first he hadn't noticed the Alkidike woman who came over to buy some bolts until she finally talked to the seller. Chimelu's eyes wandered over to her and then settled on her crossbow. It looked to be in pretty good condition and well made.
"Umm... Excuse me." He greeted the woman gently. "I'm interested in learning more about crossbows and may even use one in the future--instead of a bow like I have been." He paused. How could he explain what he wanted to say? "If you're not too busy, could I ask you a few questions and get some feedback?" Chimelu asked, hoping she would be willing to talk with an inexperienced guy who probably didn't even know where to begin with his questions. "I could treat you those bolts in exchange?" He offered. Chimelu assumed of course that she was busy and had other places to be so in exhange for information he would compensate her via buy her merchandise.

When she heard the person next to her speak up she turned her head to look at him. Ming'we instantly acknowledged that he was a wind tribesman. The more he said the more she understood what it was he was after. Giving a smile she nodded her head at him. "Sure, I wouldn't mind." She thought that more people needed to use the crossbow anyways. If she could change someone's mind into using one rather that the traditional bow, Ming would be happy. (( short reply. D: ))

"Really?" Chimelu said with a large grin as his absolute joy filled his facial features. Eagerly Chimelu turned his attention from the woman to the shop owner and dug out the necessary payment for the bolts. Once the purchase was confirmed he turned his attention once more to the alkidike with blond--not realizing she was a hybrid--still smiling. "Thank you very much."
Chimelu took a step back and gestured to a seating area that was a short walk away, near a food stand. "Would you like to sit over there?" He asked, preparing his thoughts for the questions he needed and wanted to ask. Chimelu was a little over whelmed by the fact she said yes. Now what did he do? Questions. Right. Where should he start?Heras Box That's okay! XD Sometimes there isn't much to work with/the muse isn't willing so I don't mind. Mine isn't very long either. Haha.

"Mhm." She almost giggled when he showed such enthusiasm to her response. Ming hadn't meant to make the boy pay for her bolts, but he seemed to have gotten to it before she could. Her head turned to look at the seating area he gestured to and she nodded her head, making sure to collect the bolts she'd just gotten before heading that way. "My name is Ming'we, by the way." She might as well let him know her name since he was going to be asking questions and the like. Plus she hoped to learn his name in the process. "So, what kinds of questions did you have in mind?"

"Ming'we..." He responded as if trying it out. "Its nice to meet you. I'm Chimelu." He added, still in a bit of euphoria over the fact that he was finally able to talk to someone about a crossbow. "I have a lot of them." Chimelu admitted bashfully. Hopefully she wouldn't mind so many of them nor the fact that a few of them were probably obvious.
"I'll start with my first question." He said with a nod as they headed over towards the seating area he had pointed out a moment ago. "What made you choose the crossbow over the bow? I know that's an odd question to ask but it ties into my next one which is: What were the advantages you thought the crossbow had over the bow?" He finished.

So the boy's name was Chimelu. It was unique, that was certain. Then again, so was hers. As they walked to the seating area sh listened to his first two questions. Something she could answer easily. "Well, when I was a youngling I saw a sniper using the crossbow and kinda fell in love with it. The power behind the hits and even the weapon itself. It also allows me to follow an earthling path in honor of my wind mother." So for her the choice was personal. Not that it couldn't be for others. "As for advantages, well.. the power behind the impact is a bit harder, so it can do more damage. And the crossbow is a bit more accurate since you can use both hands to steady it before firing. Plus, the bolts are smaller than arrows which means you can carry more." To make a point she held out one of the bolts she'd just gotten so that he could see.

Chimelu was surprised to learn she was a hybrid but he didn't see her any differently than he had before because, to be frank, he didn't care. Why did race matter? This seemed to be something that popped up recently and he just couldn't understand it. As he listened to her explain why she chose the crossbow he nodded. It had a special significance to her. It didn't for him beyond the fact that every time he imagined using one his heart started to beat faster and his palms began to sweat. "I'm glad that it means so much to you." He responded truthfully.
"I've always wondered if, despite all that power, if its a drawback when it comes to loading it. When you are using a bow, for example, you can do many at once and its really quick to slot one against the bow string. Do you find it to be manageable?" Chimelu further asked. It had been a thought that had popped up around the last war. Would it take a few extra seconds to load it? He might need those. Then again it could just be his own thoughts getting the best of him. "When you're in a battle, is it a little harder? Or do you get used to it after a while?" Chimelu asked before sitting down on a bench when they reached their destination.

A small nod and a smile were all that she gave when he said he was glad that it meant so much to her. In truth she was glad as well. It meant that she hadn't made a mistake when she was choosing her life's path. There were no regrets for her in the weapon she picked, nor in the career. As he spoke more about the crossbow and perceived drawbacks she nodded her head long with what he said and took a seat as well. "Well, at first, yes. When you first start working with the crossbow, as with any weapon, you have to get used to it." Ming'we had found it difficult to load when she started, though now it was like second nature to her. "It's similar to how you have to get used to the tension of a bow when you pull back the string. Only, rather than having to learn the tension, how to hold the arrow just right, and just the right way to aim, the crossbow only requires you to get used to the loading and your aim." As if to prove her point she shifted so that she could place her weapon across her lap. "Watch." Ming said gently. Taking one of her older bolts she placed it onto the track that the ammo would be using to leave and pulled it back so that the string would catch on the latch that held it in place. By now she was used to the tension and she made it look easy. "Now I am ready to fire and all I have to do is aim and pull the trigger." To safely show this she aimed her deadly companion at the ground and released the bolt so that it could strike the dirt forcefully. "When I was in battle I took higher ground and started to snipe off those that got too close to my allays. So I had some cover as well as the time to reload. It's a long distance weapon so it gives you some time before the opponent gets too close. Just like a regular bow."

Chimelu nodded as Ming’we discussed the ways to get used to his perceived drawback of using a crossbow versus a bow. ”Oh, that’s a good point.” He agreed. ”How long did it take for you to get used to it? Or notice an improvement in your loading speed. I know everyone’s going to go slower or faster, but it’s still nice to hear other people’s personal experiences.” Chimelu smiled. In truth he really valued her opinion.
Once Ming’we began to demonstrate, his blue eyes shifted to the crossbow that she had placed on her lap. He was surprised at how efficient the crossbow was in action and seemed to be a good choice for those looking for a better aim. Chimelu contemplated the idea of being further away from his opponent and shooting off a few arrows. The plus was having more time to reload. ”Do you have to be long distance? What I mean is, if you were in a situation where you had to be in closer combat would it still be semi-effective?” Chimelu asked, hoping she understood what he meant. In terms of the closeness, Chimelu was thinking maybe not being on a ridge but a few feet away like someone running towards him and having to shoot at someone. ”It seems to be a good weapon.” He said with large eyes and a big grin. Admittedly he was very excited.

She leaned down and gripped the bolt that she had fired into the ground as she listened to his questions and concerns. He, like most people, wondered if it was a weapon that could also be used in close quarter combat. Ming sat up with her ammo in hand and nodded her head with a grin. "Of course. If someone gets close you can always use it as you would any other weapon. The only difference is that it lacks an edge. But if you manage to load it and shoot your opponent at point blank range it can be deadly." It worked wonders if one was up against the hard skin of a Janarim up close and personal. Something she hoped this boy didn't have to worry about. "It is a very good weapon. Most weapons are. It just depends on how efficiently you can use it." The blonde agreed with him while pointing out that other weapons were good as well. In truth, the way a weapon worked depended on the person using it. For instance, Ming'we wouldn't be able to use a spear at all.

Chimelu listened to her and couldn’t help but return her grin. Well, at least it wouldn’t leave him open to an attack which was something he was a little concerned with. ”So you can hit them with it when necessary? I’m not sure how quickly I’ll be able to grasp shooting from close range.” He admitted. The bow had taken him a while to get used to but he had done it and probably should have just continued with it—but it didn’t feel completely right.
”I suppose you’re right.” He agreed. Anyone could just pick up a weapon and start trying to use it but it took an actual skill to get it right. ”Do you think I could see you practice sometime?” He paused and blushed. ”I just want to see it in action and maybe get a few more pointers. . . If you don’t mind.” He amended.

She nodded her head again. Ming'we found that when things got a little too close for comfort the weight of the crossbow was enough to usually knock someone out if hit directly. It came in handy. As she was asked if Chimelu could watch her practice she thought about it for a moment. While he tried to show that he didn't mean it in any awkward way she was slowly coming to her decision. "I don't see why not. Seeing how a weapon works and just how efficiently you can use it can help determine if it's for you." Ming didn't want to keep the boy from possibly choosing her favorite weapon as his own. "I actually need to shoot these new bolts to see how well they fly. If you have free time now then we can find a place without people."
