Alik was unhappy with the series of recent events that life had thrown his way. Being a part of Lux's band of crazy murderers? Not as bad as he thought it would be. It was a lot easier to steal things off of others if they were dead and couldn't fight him. However, he was starting to feel the nomadic itch return to his bones. He wanted to get back on the trail and dance his way through the lands while ripping off every poor sap he could get his claws on.

But it seemed like once you joined up with Lux, you never left. And apparently if you were the new guy, you got saddled with Lux's ghastly beast creature of a... daughter? Alik still had yet to iron out exactly what Death was and did not want to touch that bit of family drama. But there were whispers around the camp of the beast's father being Lux's enemy. That was certainly one way to screw with your enemy, steal his kid. Though, as Alik lazily circled above the slow-moving beast, he wondered if Lux had done the guy a favor.

Movement a ways ahead caught his eye, and Alik swooped into action and glided towards it. Anything to make this patrol less boring.

Braxton was lost, in every sense of the word.

Emotionally, mentally, and physically lost. Why had she dismissed him? His dark maiden had forsaken him. No, she must have her reasons. He must have done something to anger her. But what could it have been? Was he that awful? Yes he was awful. He had disappointed Octobre! So much so that she didn't want to travel with him anymore. The time spent with her... Braxton could not remember a time he had been more happy.

And now... without her? He could not remember a time he had been so broken. So lost. He had shrugged it off, of course. Pretended that her words had not felt like daggers digging into his skin. Told her that it was fine, that he was better off alone anyway. He had lied. He hated being alone, despite the fact that before her he had always felt comfortable being a lone creature of the night. Now it felt wrong to walk the world alone. Without her.

He sighed, the sound of wings flapping against the breeze drawing him from his inner turmoil just in time for him to dodge the white and blue stranger that was barreling towards him.

Mother says that patrols are important. Keeping the evil ones that wanted to hurt her off their land was priority. Death liked patrolling, because if she was protecting her mother, she was being good. And doing good. That's all Death wanted to do.

Death didn't like it when others joined her on patrol. They looked at her weird. Thought that she couldn't see them or hear their frightened whispers. They were mean.

Like this new one that Mother had sent her out with. He had made it obvious that he would rather be anywhere else but with her. There was a lot of sighing and muttering before he had taken to the skies. Now she could not see him well, since he was flying above her. It made her feel uneasy to have him casually circling her blind spot.

She heard the sudden quick flaps and raised her body up to full height. A unicorn was in the distance, and Alik was diving right for them, claws extended.

No. No. No! Mother says!

Death growled and her slow movements quickened until she was sprinting towards the two, her claws and hooves kicking up large clumps of dirt as her large skeletal head swung back and forth.

Alik cursed as the unicorn rolled out of the path of his claws. He caught the dirt below, instead, and skidded backwards on all fours, leaving a trail of claw marks in the mud.

"You've wandered into the wrong territory, bub," he growled. "Give me all your -" Alik's head whipped around at the thunderous combination of Death's hooves and claws pounding on the ground and her growls. He tried to move, but she was too fast and big. Her body hit him with enough force to knock him to the ground and he skidded back quite a bit, wincing as a few rocks sliced his legs.

"HEY. WHAT GIVES -" his rant sputtered to a stop as Death lowered her head enough so that a tusk was nestled gently against his throat. Okay. Message received.

Braxton was confused and shaking as he hurried to his hooves, wincing at the twinge of pain in his ankle. A thief diving at him from the sky? This was definitely not his day. He had sunk into a defensive position, making sure that his horn was pointed at his attacker. He never had to defend himself quite like this.

If he was shaking before, the terrifying beast that blazed past and rammed into his attacker made it hard for his knees to not knock together. It was one of the biggest soquili he had ever encountered, and it was definitely the scariest.

Braxton suddenly found it hilarious that after all his years of being a creature of the night - on one of the few times he travels during the day this happens. A hysterical laugh bubbled up from his throat as he witnessed the beast pressing a sharp bone tusk to his attacker's own throat.

He realized his mistake immediately as the beast eased up on his attacker and turned to him, the unnerving golden eye in it's chest staring at him.

He should have ran.

Mother says that sometimes Death doesn't know her own strength. Mother is smiling an odd smile when she says this, so Death is unsure of whether it's a good or a bad thing. But Death is sure that Mother would not want this intruder killed. At least not right away. This stranger had a healing horn, and Mother always wanted to add the gifted to her ranks.

"Mother says," she said softly, her tusk digging uncomfortably into Alik's neck with each word she spoke. "Mother says we don't kill Unicorns,"

Death raised herself back up to full height and her single golden eye stared into the fright-filled eyes of the stallion that stood shaking not too far from her.

"We take them home,"
