“Mmm…” Aerona had long since stepped away from the crowd. It was hard to get a pulse on such a fractured crowd. There was easily a few groups within the Phoenix Initiative – the Top (the leader and the old blueblood and yellowblood), the Ladies (Odette and her associates), and the Newcomers (whoever these tealblooded doppelgangers were, and a smattering of others including her). The leader’s protégé was an odd one, and hell, there were a few trolls she couldn’t place in the cavern just yet. In any case, Aerona was running out of steam. Even as an extroverted troll she hated to place all of her trust in the group as a whole, and a strategic retreat was necessary to unwind. Odette seemed busy with her group anyway. Aerona felt a small pang of jealousy lift her lip as her eyes darted to the floor. She clutched her arm and huffed.
Leaning back against the wall, Aerona pulled out her sketchpad from her pouch and buzzed her lips. There was a lot to take in. Fortunately the act of remembrance and unity made the affair quiet – a good time to observe everyone as they settled. Maybe if she saw them in action she would get a better glimpse of how the organization ran. Hopefully, smoothly.
She flipped open the pad and procured a pencil. Aerona scrawled “Four Fronds, Spring” in the top corner and began to sketch the leader tealblood from across the wide cavern, stopping once in a while to scribble in the wildly flailing form of Maneki as he played and vied for the attention of the others. Aerona smiled.

Rasali was feeling fidgety. She wasn’t feeling bad per say. This was easily the most… nice she’d seen the Phoenix Initiative in a long time. There were more remaining members than she’d thought, and even some new recruits! It felt a little bit like a party! Sure she was shoveling dirt and pushing rocks around, but what good party didn’t involve getting a bit of mud on your face? Still, she couldn’t help but admit it felt kind of weird to not be in some sort of mortal peril whilst hanging out with this ragtag bunch of misfits.
Rasali finished stacking the last of some odd-sized boxes that had been scavenged from several different rooms deemed unfit for storage. It was a nice pile, she decided. It was a pile deserving of a quick break.
The working caverns were pretty full. There was no getting around that with everyone moving about through the main passageways. Even the emptiest of corners still appeared to be occupied. Still, Rasali felt it was a better place to hang around than directly in front of the other trolls still moving cargo. Rasali strode over and leaned against the wall next to the young redblood.
Rasali made no attempt to hide her obvious staring as she rubbernecked over Aerona’s shoulder. “Hey, that’s pretty good!” she commented. Rasali spared a wry smile at the portrayal of Maneki. “Pretty good likeness.”
Rasali hadn’t dealt with Maneki much at all, but from what she knew of his upbringing, he seemed like a pretty good kid. The fact he was as pleasant and normal as he seemed was about as much of a miracle as his blood color.
Rasali took another moment to eye Aerona. She looked familiar, which was certainly something considering how few children Rasali knew personally. Still, she didn’t want to jump to any conclusions. “Is this your first rebel gathering?” She asked, “I think I was about your age when I first started coming to these things.”

“Wah!” Rasali materialized behind Aerona and with a start, the redblood jumped up and snapped her book closed. She quickly took stock of the situation, flushing a hot red. It only took her a moment to relax. The troll in front of her was a curvaceous greenblood – she recognized her immediately. Even 3 castes above her, Aerona had to respect her athleticism… But, in first impressions there was still room for skepticism. She smiled broadly and adjusted her braid. “Oh hey, thanks! He moves around a lot, though. Haha.” She flipped through a few drawings, crossed out, of the tyke crawling on all fours and hopping around. “Kinda hard to get a handle on. Maybe for Gramps over there, too.” She gestured to Zeffer and elbowed Rasali good-naturedly. Aerona shifted her weight and leaned her hips back on the wall. She set her sketchpad on her thighs and gave Rasali a sideways glance. She was all about conversations, but in the Phoenix Initiative it seemed that everyone already had a clique to stick to. This was a new situation, for sure. Where did she stand? Was she with the Ol’ Folks or the Tea Party? Or maybe the Rando Collective…? “Yuuup. Odette over there showed me the way; we go way back.” Aerona was impressed to hear that Rasali had been around the block a few times. She shifted her book to one leg and stuck out her hand. “Aerona Scrall. You know, I think we met at Bloodfest. Or at least, I met the wall while wobbling around like a hoofbeast on ice and horfed a slushie like I was dying. I signed up for, uh… For the Killers! The Slayers? The Slayers, right?”

Rasali had anticipated the startle and grinned cheekily. Thankfully Aerona didn’t seem to take offense to Rasali’s looming and seemed to adapt to her quite easily. Rasali snorted at the “Gramps” comment. Zeffer honestly still frightened Rasali, but seeing him interact with Maneki helped calm her nerves somewhat. She still didn’t want to be anywhere near him, but at least she knew he was an okay person. At a distance.
Rasali eagerly took Aerona’s hand and shook it with two firm flicks of her wrist. ”Rasali Panaka! Ah!” Rasali’s eyes widened, ”I knew I recognized you! Gosh you’re so much taller! And pointier!” Rasali looked Aerona up and down, nodding in approval at Aerona’s teeth and horns. ”You were the one with the little orangeblood kid, right? The squirrely one?”
Rasali lit up at the mention of her skate team. ”Yeah! The Skate Queen Slayers!” Her smile was sharp, but genuine. ”You gotta stop by some time. We still got slushies!”
Aerona seemed pretty cool.

Aerona brightened with glee. “No crap! Thanks, dude! I’ll definitely check it out. Had a, uh – kiddie-career ending injury that woulda taken me out of the team but I’m gunning for some wheel-sports.”
Rasali was easy to talk to. Aerona tapped enthusiastically on her sketchbook and bobbed her head in agreement to whatever she was saying. Greenbloods could skate by (pardon the pun), but they were resigned to some sort of mediocrity. It was cool that she was so gung-ho about the rebels.
“So, how long’ve you been in the rebels? Long as Odette? Seems like you guys have seen some stuff.” She mentioned. It was an off-handed comment, but it was meant to test mettle. Aerona kept her tone light and her eyes darted around the room to scan the other members of the rebellion. From battle scars to somber looks, it was an odd place. She trusted the message, but trusting the members was a whole different can of dirt noodles. Odette and her crew were idealistic and diverse. The Fogies were mysterious and sour looking. She’d hit them next if she was able. Perhaps with Odette by her side to vouch for her should some highblood bullshit arise.

Rasali nodded eagerly. Aerona seemed like the perfect type of troll for her roller derby team. Aggressive—but fun! Rasali’s enthusiasm mellowed somewhat as Aerona asked about her past rebel experiences. She should have seen that coming, honestly. Rasali leaned her head back against the cave wall and blew a long puff of air. ”Phooooo… Well I don’t think as long as Odette, but long enough, that’s for sure. I was just a kid with my lusus when I ended up in Old Hemisect.” Rasali turned to look at Aerona. ”Very, very shortly before it became Civisect.” It wasn’t hard to catch Rasali’s drift. As far as she was concerned, the media talk about “rowdy neighbors” or whatever had been concocted to serve as the battle’s cover story was absolutely ludicrous. There were bombs.Rasali straightened her neck out to look upon the other trolls in the room. Her eyelids lowered in thought. ”Bad stuff has gone down here more recently, though. I’m sure you can tell with the state of the base. It’s supposed to be much larger for more trolls.” Rasali sighed.

Aerona soaked in Rasali’s words. She wasn’t afraid to get right to the point with the rebels; enthusiastic shenanigans could happen later! Going in relatively blind to the Initiative was not a place she felt quite comfortable in. “Oh, wow.” Odette had been involved for longer than Rasali, as a wiggler even? But she was so young! Aerona tried to do the mental mathematics in her head and frowned. She’d have to ask Odette about it… One of the founding members of the Phoenix Initiative, one of her closest friends, and even still there was some mystery to her. The lump in her throat solidified. She slowly took a glance around the expansive cavern. The rebel forces had clearly been decimated – or worse. She was aware of the loose details, but being in the pit of the events made everything more real. “I’m so sorry…” She muttered. To think that the forces had been reduced so dramatically was horrifying. It was the Alternian way. “Does the Initiative typically recruit through sponsors?” She inquired. Even with the few random trolls nearby who had recently joined (including herself), the rebel numbers were sparse.

There was a moment of silence between the women. Workers carried on around them cleaning and reorganizing what was left of the base. The cave system the Phoenix Initiative occupied really was something else to have survived the beating it had taken. Rasali wondered how old the caverns really were. Did the Initiative dig them out themselves, or did they capitalize on an existing series of tunnels? Either would have been impressive. It was a shame that even this fortress had proved insubstantial in preventing loss of life. Rasali’s mouth dropped in a loose frown. ”Mm,” was all Rasali could manage in response to Aerona’s condolences. Instead she latched onto Aerona’s question. It was something with a correct answer. ”Occasionally. The recruitment practices will undoubtedly become stricter in the future. In my case I was contacted as part of a recruitment mailing list. I suppose I and the others of my ‘generation’ were scouted ahead of time. I was met deep in the woods and lead to an undisclosed location. Sponsorships are probably going to be added to the whole rigmarole, especially since there are so few of us left.”Rasali drummed her index knuckle against her lip thoughtfully before turning to smile at Aerona. ”I’m specialized in recruiting. Did a lot of group organizing in Old Hemisect.” Rasali felt both proud and disappointed. Old Hemisect was a disaster, but she had done well at her job. It was twice the shame in that she no longer had the opportunity to work on such a large scale again. C’est la vie, unfortunately.

‘So few of us left.’, Aerona repeated in her mind with a grim, sinking feeling. She listened numbly to Rasali, now. What were their chances if their numbers were so limited? There must have been no way, now, of making a difference. At least with fewer rebels they would be able to remain underground (literally and figuratively) to rebuild their troops. She rebolstered her bold confidence. “Right.” She exclaimed. Aerona idly pushed off and walked a bit towards the main cave. “I’d like to see you in action some time.” She suggested with a grin. “Do you think you could show me around, some?” The empty caverns made the space rather lonely. Even with Odette there, the atmosphere of the place was really getting to Aerona and she was out of mood-killing questions. She yearned for new friends. With a tilt of her head towards Rasali, Aerona looked towards an empty tunnel and tapped on her sketchbook. “I also wanna hear all about The Slayers, like how much a**-kicking we’re talking here…” She smiled.

For a moment, Rasali was afraid she’s accidentally said too much. She had become accustomed to the strife of being an operative of the Phoenix Initiative. It was something of a coping mechanism for her to talk about the horrors in a conversational manner. Their group wasn’t exactly in any position to be frightening off new members. ”Some recruiter you are, Ras.”
Thankfully Aerona returned to the conversation as bright as ever. Rasali embraced the relief and followed Aerona away from the cave wall. ”Of course! I volunteer at the Skate Queen all the time so it’s not hard to run into me. We’ll have to exchange contact info when we’re not being all shady and secretive and stuff.” Rasali laughed
”I’ll give you the grand tour—of the caves and the rink. There’s been a lot of remodeling going on down here. (Unlike the Skate Queen which hasn’t been redecorated since, like, the Glub.) So like, it’s all pretty new to me too, but it’s waaay smaller now so it shouldn’t be a problem for either of us.”
Rasali continued to ramble as the two girls meandered down the dusty tunnels.
”And don’t worry. There’s no shortage of a**-kicking around here. Not when I’m around.” Rasali winked.

Mood lifted, Aerona popped up and slipped her book back into her thigh pouch. “Yeah, shhh… I’ll be wearing my hat backwards so you know it’s me,” Aerona winked. She traced the rocky, carved interiors of the walls with a hand as Rasali took the lead. These walls must have taken sweeps to create. It was an architectural beauty given they were solid and at least spanned the length of the Phoenix Initiative’s time as an organization. Aerona giggled at Rasali’s Skate Queen comment. “Dang… It’s kind of amazing.” She remarked. She would learn a lot from her new connection. Her attitude and the way she carried herself hit exactly the right wavelength for the redblood. In the rebels at such an early age? She couldn’t imagine being so small during the initiation. She was for real – and it was intriguing. Not to mention the evident badassery in the confidence she carried. The two wandered down the candle-lit halls. It was a somber time for the rebels, but it was also an opportunity for rebirth and rebuilding. Just as the rebellion’s title stated. Aerona reflected fondly on her new allegiance and glowed when she looked up at Rasali. “You gotta tell me all about it.” She was at home.
