Wing Relay

The Wing Relay is the centerpiece event for the Dragon Games and the competition that lends the festival its name. Many feel the results of the relay speak to the skill and standing of the Wings of Trine. The top three Wings are also nominated to compete in the Pern Games, where the best Wings of Pern gather to compete and determine the best of the best.

The Relay itself is a grueling, stamina-challenging event requiring team work, determination, and careful consideration of the strengths and weaknesses of the members of a Wing. As such, it's an excellent demonstration of a Wing's skill and talent in fighting Thread.

The Relay begins and ends at Trine but Riders follow a designated race-route that takes the members throughout much of Trine's territories. The route follows the river north to the coast, follows the coast to Eron Hold then to Iteos Hold, south along the river to Aquor Hold looping back around to Trine, through the cothold and over the mountains to the east, east to Ursul then north to Atlini before a 3-leg race back to Trine. It's a massive, long-distance route that requires perfect timing and teamwork to make it. Teams are stationed at Trine and once a dragon makes it to a check-point (completing their leg of the race), they Between back to Trine to hand the baton off to the next competitor. The next competitor then Betweens to the appropriate checkpoint and continues on with the race. Betweening while journeying from one check point to another is forbidden and cheating results in disqualification for the entire team.

The Wing Relay serves to remind those in the territory of their Weyrfolk Protectors, provide social contact to those in the outlying regions, and provides an excellent opportunity for a thorough patrol of Trine's territories. It's not uncommon for the Candidate ranks to swell after the Wing Relay, when young men and women watch the great dragons streak through the skies, the large batons clasped in their claws. It's an awe-inspring sight and does wonders for the morale of Holder and Rider alike.

How to Compete

  1. In the listed order of competitors, each rider rolls 3d100. The first die is the performance of the start, the second is the middle of the leg, and the 3rd die is the competitor's performance at the end of the leg.
  2. In the post, each 250 words written as the performance, equates to +10 to any 1 roll (to a max of 100).
  3. If the 3rd roll is less than 50, the team loses 10 points for a poor hand off at the transition.
  4. The total of the 3d100+x (where the x is the points from the response) is added to the team total
  5. The team with the highest total after all legs are completed is the winner.
  6. MUST post in order, if you post out of order, it is -25 to the team.
  7. The competition has 1 week IRL to post rolls and edit responses.
  8. Staff will roll 15d100 for the NPC wings competing after the player-characters post, their total is static.

(The travel times are approximate and based on a dragon going at a good clip!
I arrived at these values based on some napkin-math from fandom calculations.)

The Dragon Games are coming soon! The Feature Event is, as always, the month long gruelling relay race that takes riders all around Trine in a bid for the title of Top Wing! 15 Riders per team must compete and only the very best make it! As each wing is at least 20 strong, only the top 15 - as selected by the Wingleader - are chosen to vy for the prestigious award.

[Roll for Kleos of Dauntless Wing!

92, (68 +40), 93 = 293

((1366))]

Of course, it was only a race.

Of course, it was far more than a race.

The wing relay was the greatest event of the whole games, the event that showed off not only individual talent but the strength and skill of the wing as a whole. It proved determination, git, fitness, and doing well meant knowing how to pace yourself. Many a brave-hearted pair burned themselves out part way through their leg and their performance suffered as a result, you had to have enough confidence to know you could stop and rest a while rather than charging ahead blindly. There had been a turn as she recalled it when a pair had crash landed outside a Hold simply unable to fly any further, they had been forced to remain grounded at the Hold for a couple of days before the dragon was ready to fly on again. Needless to say, that wing had not won the relay that turn.

Yes, winning the wing relay said a lot about your wing. Kleos wanted to win. She wanted to win very badly indeed.

As she waited on Moriath’s back for the signal to take wing she checked the straps one last time, licked her lips and tried to think of anything she might have forgotten. She had chosen her fourteen teammates for the race, those who were in the fittest shape in both mind and body. She had briefed them, they had practiced for this, and she knew they all wanted to win as much as she did. She believed in the team she had assembled. She believed in Moriath’s ability to give them a good start. <>

Moriath sent her rider a feeling of assent and reached out to address the dragons of Dauntless Wing. <can do this, I believe we are the strongest wing in Trine and we shall show the whole world that this turn! First the Trine Dragon Games, next the Pern Games!>>

As Moriath finished speaking the signal to take win rang out across the field and the scarred crimson threw herself into the sky with a bellow of excitement, and challenge to the other dragons in the sky. They thought they could beat her wing? They had another thing coming! It was a good takeoff, and though the dragons soon spread out Moriath believed she had taken an early lead.

<> Kleos reminded her dragon as they turned to fly north along the river towards the minor hold that was the first checkpoint. They had three rest stops planned along the way, two short ones by lakes so that Moriath could drink a little if she needed to - not too much, excess water would weigh her down - and one at the midway point of the race when Moriath would rest her wings for a few minutes. Of course the rests also gave Kleos a chance to relieve herself, a necessity on a flight that would last a day and a half or so. Taking only three stops was pushing it a bit but they’d done it before, it was feasible if not comfortable.

<> Moriath assured her rider with a mental laugh. <> Losing, so far as Moriath was concerned, quite simply wasn’t an option; they were Moriath and Kleos of Dauntless wing, the finest pair of the finest wing anywhere to be found on Pern! She looked forward to showing everyone that, especially those cocky bronzes who were so sure their size would carry the day.

_______________________

It was some hours later when Moriath landed by the lake with a heavy thump, breathing hard and already aching, it was always hardest at this point or at least so she found. There was a wall of exhaustion that you broke through at some point, and when you did you felt elated and the pain and weariness burned away like Thread under flame. She had not yet reached that point however and was glad to have her feet on the ground even if only for a few minutes.

As Moriath dipped her head to drink from the forest lake Kleos slid down from her back and started to stretch; she might not be exerting herself but flying for long periods left one stiff and the last thing she needed was her own twinges affecting her dragon. <> she said as she uncapped her waterskin and took a deep drink. Overhead a dragon overtook them, and it took all of their willpower not to just scramble into the air and give chase. A rest would serve them well, they would overtake that pair again soon enough.

Once she had drunk enough Moriath spent a little while stretching her wings carefully while Kleos walked around her to check the harness again. Once they were both satisfied that all was in order the scarred woman mounted the scarred dragon and they took to the skies once more.

_______________________

At the second rest Moriath was panting hard and Kleos - who had been half sleeping on her back - spent the rest period massaging her wing muscles. The effort of working the great muscles brought out a sheen of sweat on her brow and left her a little breathless herself but she could feel the good it was doing and pressed on with the task. Any little advantage they could take advantage of they would, they had to make a good start for the rest of their relay team or what business did they had leading it?

Soon enough Moriath’s hearts beat a little slower and she felt ready to go once more, while the rest was important it was also important not to linger longer than absolutely necessary on the ground.

<> Kleos observed as she climbed back onto her dragon’s back and bent to kiss her between the shoulders. <> If they could keep up this form they would put in a fine start for their wing, and a good start was all important for morale.

Moriath rumbled agreement with this sentiment, set her eyes on the stars, and launched herself into the air once more.

_______________________

As they touched down for their final brief rest Kleos did her best to ease the ache in Moriath’s wings again, though honestly they felt a little better than they had at the half way point; Moriath had broken through that wall and it had been all Kleos could do to force her down to take this last rest. <> she sent as she leaned into her dragon’s side, pressing her fingers against the red hide and working at a twinge she felt coming on. <>

<>

_______________________

And then they were drawing near to the checkpoint. It seemed to Kleos that they had only just left their last rest stop, the thought of the end being near - of handing on the baton and watching Kalteth continue the start they had made - made the countryside below them flash by like something in a dream.

Closer, closer, closer, and through! Moriath vanished between to reappear over Trine and swooped down to pass the baton to Kalteth who was waiting in perfect position. <> Moriath sent with a bugle.

Kleos threw a salute to Sh'en, a wild grin plastered across her face as she watched Kalteth disappear in turn to continue the race. <>

Moriath sent her rider a feeling of elated exhaustion and spiralled down to the landing field gratefully. <>

[K'lo of Gale Stalkers Wing]

The day of the Dragon Games had arrived, and K’lo was very nervous. He was standing near the starting point, fiddling with his gloves as they waited for the games to begin. His wing was participating in the Dragon Relay, and he’d been selected to participate. What if he let everyone down?

We will be fine, Kyrith told him for the dozenth or so time. It is a simple flight, straight in the direction you’re given. We even have one of the shorter legs of the race, only about a day’s flight. Perfect for a little black. Our wingleader was smart to give us this leg.

But we have the first leg, K’lo answered back. The very first one. If we’re not fast enough, the whole race will be thrown off.

This race will not be lost if just one racer is a little slow, Kyrith responded calmly. There are many legs, and other racers can make up for time any other has lost. Just enjoy the flight, the black dragon advised. He looked around and added, Ah, mount up now, it seems we’re about to begin.

K’lo would have liked to find some reason to delay, but he knew it would do no good. Kyrith wouldn’t let him, for one thing. So he pulled on his riding gloves and slowly climbed up into the riding straps. Kyrith took hold of the baton and held it tightly in one front claw, leaving the other claw on the ground to help steady himself for launch. There was a few moments before they started, tense as waiting to launch off to fight Thread. Then they were off, Kyrith leaping into the air and beating his wings hard to gain height.

This is quite different, Kyrith commented cheerfully as he rose. I am not used to long flights. Usually we just go between to wherever we need to go. It will be nice to stretch my wings.

But don’t literally stretch them, K’lo warned. I mean, don’t overwork yourself and strain them. If you can’t fly, I don’t know what would happen. Would they let someone else fill in?

You are right, we should not find out, Kyrith acknowledged, and back eased into a pace he could maintain for a long flight.

Over the long day’s flight, Kyrith alternated periods of slower, steady flight, short bursts of quicker flight, and occasional glides, a pattern meant to keep him going as long as possible. K’lo found there was very, very little for him to do. Once in a while he’d check their course based on a map he’d brought, looking for landmarks on the ground and checking the position of the sun. But besides that there was nothing for him to do but enjoy the view. It was kind of nice to see areas he hadn’t seen before, and he was glad that he was flying over one of Trine’s lakes for half the time instead of over a random stretch of forest. That would probably get boring fast.

As the day neared it’s end, they approached the first check point. Almost the next pair’s turn, K’lo noted with relief. It will be Av'nia and Druith, right?

I am sure you are right, Kyrith answered. He held the baton tight, looking at their destination intently.

Better let them know we’re coming. I think we’re close enough to the weyr for your mindvoice to reach K’lo told his dragon.

Kyrith rumbled his acknowledgement, then said, Druith, we are coming. Be ready. Moments later they passed through the checkpoint. K’lo quickly pictured the race’s starting point and instructed Kyrith to between there. A few seconds later they arrived in the weyr and handed off the baton.

As the next pair headed off, Kyrith landed, and K’lo could finally slide off. He found he’d gone stiff from sitting so long. Ouch. I think I could use a warm bath to soak out my muscles, he noted.

An excellent idea. I believe I will go for a swim to cool off mine.

[ Arlii of Twilight Flames ]

She felt the muscles flexing in those great wings as Erinaeth extended them in excitement. Arlii couldn't keep the stupid grin from her face either. This was going to be amazing! She had the utmost faith in her new wing. They had all seemed just as ready for this as she had been. And they had some tough competition to handle!

"Alright, Eri. It's just about time to start." Arlii patted the crimson on the neck, checking and re-checking her riding straps and making sure everything as ready for them to start.

We'll do an excellent job! I can't wait to get up there and fly with the others! The crimson giggled.

Shifting her weight ever so slightly, Arlii leaned low over her dragon's neck. She felt Erinaeth's muscles bunching and the dragon's eagerness to be in the air. Her talons wrapped more firmly around the baton. And then they were off! Powerful wing beats took them to the skies, the wind whipping the wingleader in the face. A laugh bubbled out and she encouraged Eri to climb higher, find the air thermals. Tell the wing to behave and be ready! We'll be tagging in J'nes soon.

At least she hoped so.

Twilight Flames! Mine says to behave and be prepared. Hatteth, we hope to tag you in soon.

Arlii cast a glance to her sides, spotting the other dragons racing with them. Erinaeth was keeping pace with a few of them and so far, none were pulling farther ahead of the other. Or so she thought. Another crimson dragon seemed to flash by, taking the lead. Dauntless. She grinned, settling into her saddle. A full days time was the estimated time for this beginning leg of the race. And she was rather pleased with how they were starting out.

Several hours later, about midway through the day, Arlii found herself being shaken out of a light doze by Erinaeth. The crimson seemed distracted and Arlii couldn't see any of the other dragons around them. She gave Eri a smack on the neck. Shaffing hell, Eri?! What happened?

The crimson rumbled in response, seeming to shake herself back into the game. Oh! Oh Mine, I was having so much fun talking with the others! They had so many interesting things to share. You told me to relax and not wear myself out. So I was relaxing. The others kept speeding ahead though... She paused a little guiltily. I almost dropped the baton so I slowed down a bit too.

You wherry butt! Relax, yes. Not fall behind! Arlii groaned and mentally scolded herself for having dozed off and trusted Erinaeth not to gossip. Or get distracted, instead of encouraging her to hold tight and fly swift. She should have known better. Pick up the pace. We have a lot of ground to cover if we want to give our wing a fighting chance and not a piss poor start. Eri pouted a little but she beat her wings and began picking up the pace. Arlii still mentally cursed the two of them together and prayed to Faranth the wing wouldn't fall too far behind.

A full days flying was almost upon them. And within the last hour or so, they had caught back up with the other dragons by some miracle. And they were doing alright. Erinaeth was beginning to feel a little weary, but she took strength from the excitement and determination of her fellow dragon competitors.

Tell J'nes to gear up, we're almost there.

Hatteth! Be ready, we're about twenty minutes from the relay point!

When the first relay point came into view, Arlii encouraged her dragon to put on one more burst of speed. Let's do this!

Here we come. Erinaeth warned Hatteth before she passed through the relay point and betweened back to her wingmate to hand off the baton she carried in her claws. She was as careful as she could be, considering the adrenaline pumping through her veins.

"Good luck, J'nes!" Arlii shouted with a thumbs up and grin.

[Rolling for Sh'en of green Kalteth of Dauntless Wing, taking the baton from his wingleader, woo!]

A day after the races had begun, Sh'en was extremely excited to be a part of it. His turn was second, and he knew that he and his dragon couldn't have waited even one more day to do it. They were both too excited, their emotions bouncing off of each other to create a very interesting (though enjoyable) restlessness.

Kalteth betweened to her relay point, riding the winds high in the air as she waited for Moriath. She squinted at the cluster of approaching dragons, scanning for the crimson among them as Sh'en did the same.

cried Kalteth, positively aflutter with excitement. This was a race, after all. Sh'en was a little worried though, as he looked his dragon over from his perch on her back.

He knew that Kalteth was built for speed, not endurance, and that he would somehow have to keep her in the air and on track. This would be as much a mental test for him as a physical one for her, and would be quite tricky.

squealed Kalteth, sending an enthusiastic greeting to Moriath as she swooped in from her holding position. Agile as ever, she did a flip in the sky and executed an acrobatic, impressive, and flawless baton pass with the Crimson, taking off with the baton held proudly in her claws.

Sh'en let out a breath of relief as he held onto his straps.

Well. he thought to himself, That's done.

~~~
Sh'en, like his dragon, was not built for endurance. As the day of his part of the relay dragged on, he found thoughts of food and drink and rest and sleep intruding onto his concentration. And even when he dragged his mind back to the task at hand, he had to deal with Kalteth's constant distraction.
she said piteously around the afternoon, her speed flagging for a moment as she looked back at him.
She mulled over that for a moment. Flight was her love, her buzzword, her greatest joy. she said, putting on a burst of speed – she could see the other dragons and she didn't want to lose.
Sh'en was relieved that that held her for a few more hours, enough to sneak a few snacks out of his pack and a drink of water.
Day turned to night, and Sh'en could see that his dragon was starting to really tire – he would normally not let her be airborne for more than a few hours, let alone this long. Her voice, however, showed no exhaustion, just delight – that was one of the many things that Sh'en loved about her.
she cooed. He followed the turn of her head to the shimmering golden glow of Rukbat sinking beneath the horizon.
“Yeah, I'm looking.” he said out loud. The sound of his own voice was hard to hear but a welcome vibration in his skull amidst the roar of the sky and the wind. “It's pretty, Kally, but keep flying.” He gripped her harness to keep from falling asleep, letting the leather dig into his palms. It wasn't as though he hadn't stayed up late before – in times of love and war, he had gone without proper sleep for a few days. But Kally hadn't, and he hadn't had to do anything so mentally and physically gruelling for an entire day.
she said hopefully, looking at the water in the dying light of the sun.
The idea was tempting to his tired mind – a swim, just a little swim. But Sh'en also knew that his wing was counting on him, and that they couldn't take a break. Not now. They'd never get out of their break. “Nope.” he said, a little bit of regret entering his voice, “Keep flying, Kally, just keep flying.”
~~~

'Just keep flying' lasted them until late in the night, when the moons were well along the sky and the stars – including the red star – hung above them like glows. Sh'en's fatigue and Kalteth's fatigue were one and the same, now. Both rider and dragon were exhausted, barely able to stay awake and aloft and in possession of the baton. Sh'en even caught himself falling asleep, though he managed to wake himself up before Kalteth drifted out of the sky and did the same. He tried all of his tricks – slapping his face, playing word games with Kalteth, chatting about the wonderfully clear weather, about their new acrobatics routine. He tried to get Kalteth gossiping with the other dragons, but it was difficult – they were all tired and not all were willing to talk.

Fortunately, with the dark came fewer distractions, and what shiny distractions did remain were helpful – the lights of the hold in the distance, the sparkle of the stars, the glimmer of moonlight... these were all inspiring enough for dragon and rider to convince them to hold back the sleep that beckoned them.

They were barely scraping through the night when the dawn came, bringing with it some renewed energy and joy for the pair. Kalteth's eyes widened, sudden large splotches of blue and green flashing bright amidst their tired grey. In the distance, they could both see the next relay point.

A cracking of air pressure signaled the entrance of dragons emerging from between and Kalteth's energy rallied again. She put on a burst of speed, bugling a greeting to her green wingmate as she swooped in for the hand in. Sh'en's energy was boosted too, and he grinned as they made their handoff, pleased with their performance.

Baton handed off – though somewhat less acrobatically than they had received it – Kalteth glided for a few moments more, watching the dragons take off on the next leg of the race.

Kalteth said again, positively bouncing with renewed joy.

said Sh'en proudly. He wanted to between back home to his rest, but he could barely form the coordinates in his head – not a safe way to between.

Of course, the dragon heartily agreed with this course of action.

When it was time, Ja'son was ready, Karath growling as she appeared in the skies over the next hand-off point. Her wings beating hard. She was big and strong, her wings keeping them both airborne as they waited for Kalteth and Sh'en.

'That green needs to hurry up. Probably got lost.' Karath muttered irritably. She wanted to win this leg of the race, she was a competitor and was better than any other dragon, despite size and color. It didn't matter if she wasn't built for speed, she would get there!

Ja'son chuckled at his girl. She was a true warrior and he was sure they would do amazing in this race.

'There!' Ja'son called out as he saw the green, now more tired, flying towards them. With a complicated flip that Ja'son was sure Karath would make fun of, they took the baton and took off.

'What a flightly little thing.' Karath commented. Ja'son chuckled again. 'Let's not worry about her now darling, let's win this.' He encouraged, holding on hard.

(*)

The middle of the race, if Karath were a dog, she would be panting. Ja'son tried to stop her sooner, but she was so hard-headed. She wasn't a speedy green, she was meant for fighting with her muscle and size alone. She wasn't meant to sprint, only marathon.

She dropped a few feet in height but quickly regained it and her wings were getting tired. The world was flying by beneath them and but her head kept up, eyes narrowed on the path to their hand off.

Ja'son whispered encouraging words to her the whole time. His beloved darling would be fine. They would get back to Trine and rest and she could drop on the lakeside and nap.

'Don't think about that. We're going to win this part, then go to the ending part and the others better make sure we win the whole thing.' She said and Ja'son had to grin, she was tired and annoyed but she
was single-minded and ready to win!

Ja'son believed in his girl but was worried about their speed. It wasn't that the other dragons were faster, it was that he didn't want Karath to be too tired to pass on the baton.

(*)

The last leg of the race. Ja'son knew they were slowly up. He could feel it and as much as Karath was pushing herself, she would pass out soon. They might have to rest before between-ing back to the Weyr. He didn't want them to get lost or even hurt during it.

'Like I would ever do that.' Karath piped for the first time in a long time. Ja'son patted her neck. He was ready to pass this off and get home to hear about their success.

He saw the next dragon and grinned. "Ready Darling!?" He asked out loud in a whoop. Karath let out a tired but triumphant rumble before twisting as they got near and letting go of the Baton, tossing it to the next dragon.

[ Av'nia and Druith of Gale Stalkers ]

The dragon games. It was an event that everyone had been looking forward too. And her wing had been practicing for. She'd volunteered herself for part of it, not really sure what else to do. The relay race was simple and straightforward. Take a baton from point A to point B. Pass off to next wingmate. Hope her wing won?

It's so exciting! Everyone is chattering and- Oh, look Mine! There go the first fliers! Druith nuzzled his bonded, knowing the crowds were making her uneasy. But this event thing was going to be fun! And yes, even his rider could be seen cracking a smile as they watched their wingmate take off.

Now we wait. Av'nia said to her dragon, hand resting against his leg. They had wanted to see the start of the relay race. See what they had to expect. The blue pair watched K'lo and Kyrith until they couldn't see the black pair any longer.

Good luck, Kyrith! Druith bugled before turning to his rider. We should relax for the day. We'll have to be ready for when they reach the relay point. He said matter of factly.

Av'nia sighed and nodded. "I wouldn't mind... finding someplace less crowded to relax." She admitted, feeling a little guilty about it. But crowds still made her feel a little anxious. As did the fact they would be flying in the relay in a days time. "Maybe we should get a small meal." Stuffing themselves was definitely not an option, if Druith was going to fly for a full days time.

The pair relaxed for the rest of the day, having a small meal - Druith ate part of a herdbeast but saved the rest for another dragon - before finding a spot to curl up and rest. They wanted to be ready for when K'lo and Kyrith finished their leg of the race. Perhaps they could have explored around, taken a look at everything that was set up, or even hung with the rest of their wing. But Av'nia was not the most social of individuals. She left that up to her dragon.

The following day, Av'nia carefully checked over Druith's riding harness, making sure it was tight but not too tight. Comfortable enough for the blue to fly for an extended period of time. He was hardly able to sit still and his giddiness started to rub off on his rider. She was smiling and even accepting wishes of 'good luck' more easily and less awkwardly.

Mine! It is time. They are almost there! We must be ready. Druith exclaimed, lowering himself to allow his rider to climb into place. Once she was settled, he trotted off to wait with the other dragons awaiting teammates. And then Kyrith was there! Druith, in his excitement, fumbled the baton. The hand-off did not go as smoothly as it could have, but the blue latched on and betweened to the midway point he gained from Kyrith.

That could have been better... Av'nia commented after they reappeared and Druith worked to get himself into a steady, length eating flight. She felt nervous, wondering if her wingmates would be upset?

Do not worry, myAv'nia. The fault was mine and they will forgive us. Let us have fun! Druith crooned, trying to help his rider relax again. He felt terrible for making her worry.

I'll be alright, my heart. Let us focus on the flying!

They had discussed ahead of time a plan of action, consulting with fellow wingmates and determining they'd stop twice for a small rest. Just to give Druith's wings a break.

--------------------------

At the first rest point, they chose a place along the beach, where the sound of the ocean was relaxing and calming to watch. Av'nia even took a little extra time to pull her boots off and stick her toes in the water. It was chilly, but felt nice and helped her anxiety to decrease.

Maybe we'll go back to the beach after we finish our portion of the race? Druith asked, watching his rider carefully put her boots back on and check over everything before mounting again.

"That would be very nice, yes." She said after a moment.

Druith crooned affectionately, sparing a few more seconds to nuzzle his rider. Then it shall be done! But first... He let his laughter ring through her mind as the blue launched himself into the air once again. They had spent a little more time than planned at the beach, and Av'nia hoped they could make up the time. Let us speed a bit more this portion of the race, my heart. She felt bad asking Druith to fly faster, but they did need to make up a little time.

------------------

Second rest point reached and left. The pair choose only to spend a few minutes there. Long enough for Druith to drink a little water and Av'nia to stretch her legs. She crossed her fingers, hoping they were catching up on lost time. Druith didn't seem to be worried, so it was helping her not to worry as much.

As I've said, Mine. This is supposed to be fun! Let us keep it so. He hummed softly at her, eyes bright and green. Neptanth, we are almost there. Be ready for us!

------------------

They were on the last leg of the race. Druith was pushing himself a little harder. But Av'nia wouldn't let him overdo it. I won't let you overtax yourself just because we can see the end. She warned him, very ready to be done with this. Yet at the same time, she was worrying again over what her teammates would say. Were they making good time? Faranth she really hoped so.

Here we come, Neptanth! Druith told his fellow blue as he zipped through the relay point.

Av'nia quickly pictured the starting point of the race and felt the cold of between wash over her. Then they were back at the start, Druith singling out Neptanth and eagerly handing off the baton. It slipped a little in his claws as he tried to pass it off, but aside from that he felt it went smoothly.

Good luck! He called before gliding out of the way and landing heavily.

She wasted no time slipping from her dragons back, patting his leg. "You did well, love. I'm proud of you." Av'nia didn't really care at that moment if they'd finished last. They had done their part to help their wing. There wasn't anything more they could really do.

How about we go find a spot on the beach, like I promised? He inquired, playfully swatting at his rider with his tail. She laughed and nodded, walking off with him to go find a real meal the blue could enjoy.

[J'nes of Twilight Flames ]

After much anticipation, the Dragon Games had finally begun! J'nes was glad to join in the relay race, and was prepared to do his best for the Twilight Flames Wing. He and Hatteth were on the second leg of the race, so he only had a short time to wait before it was his turn. They spent most of the first day doing light exercise followed by resting, so they'd be ready and full of energy for the trip. A long flight such as this needed them to be rested and prepared, even if their leg was one of the shorter ones, only approximately one day long.

Hatteth was even getting into the spirit of competition. As the day wound down and their turn drew near, they waited near the staring point. There was nothing to watch to see if the last team was approaching, since they'd between over when they were done, so there was nothing for them to do but wait.

"Good thing we have a short leg, isn't it? It's less taxing for us," J'nes commented as he reclined against his dragon's side. The brown was laying near the start point, but he was alert and waiting with his head up instead of sprawled out.

I suppose, he answered. But I could have taken a longer leg if it was asked of us. His head swiveled from side to side as he looked for any sign that it would be their turn soon.

J'nes just chuckled. "Ah, but the longer we're out flying, the longer we're away from our weyrmates. Do you really want to be away from Hyweth for more than a day?"

That made Hatteth pause. True, he finally said. But I would also not want her to think me lazy for not doing my share of the work.

"Why would she think you're lazy? We're doing the leg our Wingleader told us to do. This is a team sport, so obeying our leader is important," J'nes countered.

Hatteth was trying to come up with a response to that when he got a message from Erinaeth. Hatteth! Be ready, we're about twenty minutes from the relay point!

Erinaeth says they will be here soon. Be ready, he told J'nes, nudging his rider with his snout. As soon as J'nes had gotten to his feet, Hatteth did as well, then bent his foreleg to help his rider mount up. J'nes spent the next few minutes checking his gear to make sure everything was in order, while Hatteth scanned the skies.

As soon as Erinaeth appeared in the air above them, Hatteth leaped into the air and reached out to take the baton. Once that was in his claws he waited only long enough to fly a safe distance from the ground and his Wingleader before going between to the point he was given.

As soon as he appeared above the checkpoint he was off, beating his wings to pick up speed.
You remember our lessons to weyrlings about pacing yourself and knowing your limits, right? J'nes sent to his dragon, opting not to try and shout over the rush of the wind.

No, it's been too long since we taught one. I've forgotten it all already Hatteth answered cheekily. But he did slow down to a pace better suited for long-distance flying.

J'nes wasn't worried about whether his dragon could handle the distance. Browns were noted for being steady and having good endurance, after all. It was the smaller dragons that J'nes was more concerned with; the blues, greens and blacks. They often didn't have the stamina for a full Threadfall, much less a day-long flight. But then, there was nothing in the rules that said they couldn't stop and rest as needed. And they certainly would have to stop and sleep for the multi-day flights.

But J'nes needed to keep track of his own dragon, not speculate about someone else's. While they had not taken many marathon flights, he'd studied and taught the theory often enough. He kept careful track of Hatteth's condition, reigned the dragon in when he was pushing himself too hard, insisted on periodic glides to conserve his strength. Hatteth kept trying to push himself too hard, so J'nes found himself needing to insist on glides more and more.

But we will drop behind if we keep gliding, Hatteth protested, his mindvoice nearly a whine.

We'll fall even farther behind if you pull a muscle or wear yourself out, J'nes responded patiently. Pacing your flight is the most effective way to give our best effort. Or do you want to tell Hyweth that you had to walk the rest of the way because you overtaxed your wing?

Hatteth grumbled at that, but the threat worked and he showed back down.

J'nes tried to keep his dragon from growing bored by chattering about anything that came to mind and pointing out anything interesting on the landscape below them. They ended up getting into a rather lively discussion about whether J'nes's son Janel would Impress at the upcoming clutch. Naturally, Hatteth insisted he would, and to a brown (the best color!). Though he allowed a crimson would be almost as good. J'nes reminded his dragon that Janel would Impress when the right dragon for him was shelled, and that J'nes had waited through several hatchings until Hatteth had found him.

After a long flight, the checkpoint finally came into view. Ah, there's the end. Now you may sprint. J'nes told Hatteth.

Finally! the brown responded, then shot forward, beating his wings as fast as if he were pursuing a gold in a Flight. We should warn the next team we are nearly there. Who is it? he asked.

J'nes had made a note to remind himself for that. Now he leaned close to Hatteth's back and pulled the note out of a jacket pocket, holding it near his dragon to keep it from being blown away. He peered down at it and answered, F'iar and Solath are up next.

So following his wingleader’s example, Hatteth passed a message along. Solath, we are near the checkpoint, about 10 minute’s flight. You and yours should get ready. Then he turned his focus solely to putting on as much speed as he could.

As soon as he passed though the checkpoint he went between back to the weyr to hand off the baton, then landed heavily on the ground. I think I would like a nap now, he told J’nes.

Oh? Tired out already? What was all that about wanting a longer leg? J’nes teased.
If I had a longer leg, I would have paced myself for a longer leg. And I am tired because I flew so hard the last few minutes, the brown insisted stoutly.

J’nes smiled and shook his head, but let the subject drop. Come on, let’s walk back to our weyr. You’ll be less stiff in the morning if you walk now, to loosen up your muscles. A swim would also work, if you’d like that.

Hatteth perked up at the thought. A swim would be very pleasant, and good for cooling down. Perhaps Hyweth would like to join me, he said.

An excellent idea, J’nes agreed. I think I will leave you two to it and wash you some other time, since I could use a nap myself.

What, you get to sleep and I don’t? Why don’t you have to go for a walk? Hatteth protested, but without any real force. There was even a spring in his step as he headed to the prospect of a swim with his weyrmate.

Because I wasn’t the one flying, so I won’t get sore if I don’t loosen up. Now come on, they’re waiting for us.

Ca'mil & Cheryth - Dauntless

A long time ago Ca'mil and Cheryth would have been annoyed and impatient as they waited for their turn in the race but they were older now and patience had been something the pair had learned early on in their careers, rather then fretting and stressing and pacing as she had seen some others do she and Cheryth merely waited patiently, conserving their strength for when it would truly be needed, in the race itself.

'They should be here' soon Cheryth remarked as she gazed in the general direction their comrades should appear.

'Yes its getting about that time' Ca'mil replied, standing and stretching before she double checked her riding straps - although she already knew they were fine there was no harm in taking the extra time to make sure. Safety first and all that, no point in taking unnecessary risks when there was time to do things right she told herself. Satisfied that everything was in order and she had everything she would need she mounted her dragon the crimsons wings taking them quickly and swiftly into the air. It had been an honor to be chosen to ride in the relay both Ca'mil and Cheryth were determined to do the very best that they could and prove that their Wingleader had been right in trusting them to represent the wing in such a manner.

'There I think I see them' Cheryth reported as they hovered in the air and squinting into the light Ca'mil nodded slightly 'Yep that looks like them alright, you ready?' Ca'mil replied.

'Of course' Cheryth responded the proud crimson whirling to catch the thrown baton and bugling a thank you to the pair before them before setting off with strong beats of her wings.

'Careful not to over do it at the beginning' Ca'mil reminded her dragon as they flew, receiving a mental acknowledgment of the remark although Ca'mil could feel that her dragons mind was solely focused on the task as hand. Thankfully this leg of the race was fairly uneventful, and Ca'mil didn't really anticipate any problems or overdo hardship, both she and Cheryth had put in a great deal of time conditioning themselves for their leg of the race and while they had always been in good shape they were in even better shape now. The ground sped by below them and Cam'il amused herself by counting the animals she could make out on the ground, mere specks from this height but distinguishable none the less. All too soon it felt like the first rest stop was coming into view. 'I think thats our first stop' Ca'mil told her dragon as they approached the watering hole. It wasn't very big but it was good enough to do the job and the watch looked clear and clean.

Flaring her wing slightly and tipping them to bleed away some speed Cheryth landed with gentle experience next to the waters edge, lowering her head to take a refreshing drink while her rider got off to stretch and fill her own waterskin. All too soon the pair were back in the air, once more flying as swiftly and strongly as they could manage for the sake of their wings honor. Of course no one had come out and said it was important to win but they all knew that each of them wanted too - it was just a race maybe but it was also a bit of bragging rights and while Ca'mil was not typically one to brag about things it would be nice to have the occasion to do so for once.

'How are you doing?' She questioned her dragon as they flew past what she guessed to be close to the halfway mark of their leg, at this point she was sure that Cheryth would be starting to tire but the true aches wouldn't be felt until closer to the end. cheryth was a strong and determined dragon however and Ca'mil had no doubt that she would finish what she had started no matter how tired she ended up being.

'Still fine' cheryth responded, sure she was growing winded but neither her lungs nor her wings were starting to burn yet, and so she judged she was still doing quite well and unless she was mistaken they were making fairly good time at that, surely they wouldn't have any troubles finishing their leg of the race and sending the rider and dragon pair after them off with a good time.

'Alright, it shouldn't be long until we reach the second rest stop now' Ca'mil responded, stroking her dragons crimson neck in support, sure they were both in this together and her legs and seat might end up a touch sore after such a prolonged flight but it was really Cheryth doing all the hard work here. As promised it was only a short time later when Ca'mil spotted the telltale location they had been drilled into remembering, a thin stream wound its way below them offering riders and dragons both a second bit of refreshment on their journeys.

As with the last stop this one was relatively short, neither of them wanting to loose much time on the ground when there was still a good bit of distance to go. It was encouraging to think that they were almost done however and with this thought in mind Cheryth drove herself faster, pushing herself as hard as she dared in order to make the best time possible in their run. Her wings and lungs had long since begun to ache and burn when at long last the next pair of riders came into view and twisting at the last second Cheryth passed off the baton to the waiting pair 'Fly well!' She called out to them as they hurried off while she and Ca'mil returned home, both of them were looking forward to a bit of rest and relaxation after the exertion of the ride but both of them also knew they would be anxiously awaiting the results of the race along with the others.

[Roll for A'nos & Acriculeth of Dauntless Wing!

88, 90, (66 + 40) = 284

((1214)]

People thought that the world was built on solid things, things like land owernship and marriage alliances, like treaties and trade routes. They were right of course but they were also wrong because the things that people considered so solid and immovable in fact had a foundation beneath them.

What Pern was built on, right down at its core, was stories.

Stories had power, they could make a man from a revolutionary hero into a vile despot. They could turn the golden queens from unquestioned rulers into just another kind of dragon. It was the way people thought that shaped the world, that gave power to some and not to others, and stories shaped the way that people thought.

The Dragon Games made a good story, especially the Wing Relay.

Heroic, honorable, dashing riders all working together to prove their prowess? It was a magnificent bauble to dangle in front of the Holders, it captured the hearts of children and prompted them to stand eagerly before Searchdragons in the hope that they might one day fly on high with their dragon clasping a baton as they raced for glory. The story didn’t have space for the reality of being a rider, oh people knew but few who stood for candidacy really understood it. He hadn’t. When he had stood on the Sands he had believed he did, he had believed that he didn’t at all buy into the stories surrounding dragonriders. But he had. He’d had the thread of the story wound through his mind, whispering of the power riders held and that the power could be his if he only reached out to take it. It had all worked out well for him in the end of course but he wasn’t going to fool himself by pretending he’d really understood back then.

He understood better now, the threads of stories were everywhere and if you could grasp the right ones you could use them rather than merely being dragged along in the wake of others who had trodden the same path before you.

And here was today’s story, Junior Weyrleader A’nos of bronze Acriculeth joking genially with a rival rider as they waited for their turn in the relay race. Of course winning would be ideal; if Dauntless Wing won, he himself performed well, and he was gracious in victory it would give his image quite a boost and no politician should ever turn their nose up at that. He was prepared for the other instance too however; should Dauntless fail to triumph he would be the gracious loser, prepared to congratulate the winners and accept a little fun being poked at him. The hero in the story would never be ungracious if fairly defeated.

As the time that Ca’mil and Cheryth were expected drew near A’nos bid farewell and good luck to the other pair he’d been talking with and lent forward as Acriculeth launched into the air. The circled for some time, hearts racing in sync with anticipation. This was a golden opportunity and they would seize it with hands and claws. If any of their wingmates failed them they were going to be very disappointed though of course only Acriculeth would show it.

Cheryth appeared, Acriculeth swooped, and with a fairly smooth handover completed they jumped between to the checkpoint.

______________________

Their leg of the great race was to end at Ateos Hold, a fact that rather pleased the pair of them. Any leg would have been good enough - not being selected to fly would have been unacceptable - but being seen above a major hold was a nice bonus to a pair who relied upon being recognised and thought well of to get on in life. The opinions of the Holders shaped their dealing with A’nos, and the shape of those dealings in turn shaped how people back at Trine voted. When one got along with the Holders and got the best out of them, one was more likely to win the confidence of the people of Trine.

It was not one of the longer legs of the relay - a day and a half or so - and if he stretched himself Acriculeth could have completed it without rest. With this in mind they hadn’t planned any stops but they had made themselves familiar with the countryside so that if they needed to take a rest they would know of a likely place to set down.

They were about six hours into their leg when A’nos finally gave up and gave Acriculeth a mental nudge. <> How unglamorous! This certainly wouldn’t be a part of the story, it was a well known fact that the hero of a tale never needed to piss unless it be for comedic value and he wasn’t planning for this to be a comedic tale.

Acriculeth considered this request for a little while before replying. <>

<no!>> A’nos replied, incredulous. <>

<> the bronze said flatly, <>

A’nos scowled but he had to admit that Acriculeth was flying well. <<...You’re sure there’s nobody else nearby?>>

Acriculeth took a look around them. <> he affirmed.

A’nos groaned. <definitely not making it into my retelling.>>

What happened next was quite an exercise in aerial daring and, to be honest, it didn’t actually make it all that easy to relive oneself. Unfastening yourself from the riding straps mid flight was a stupid stunt for stupid macho rider who had the life expectancy of a wherry in a tunnelsnake nest yet he had done it, and climbed down the side of the harness so that Acriculeth could hold him in one forefoot and…. Well it worked but it wasn’t an experience A’nos ever wished to repeat.

As he fastened himself back into the straps and adjusted his riding leathers the harper shivered slightly. <> That experience had been bad enough, he didn’t want to imagine having to pull down his pants. Underneath him he could feel Acriculeth shaking slightly. He gave the bronze a hard slap. “You’re laughing at me!” he cried aloud over the wind of their speed.

<> Arciculeth wasn’t usually one for such juvenile humour but really, really! It was a once in a lifetime experience.

The next time A’nos needed to relieve himself Acriculeth assented to a brief stop to rest his wings in order to ward off a cramp.
______________________

Being sparing with their rest stops set the pair in good stead; they reappeared over Trine, handed on the baton to their waiting wingmate, and silently agreed never ever to mention their ‘tactics’ to anyone. Acriculeth still thought it was hilarious though.
