Ely had been pacing, back and forth, back and forth, for the better part of the evening. His father had split a bit after the kits had started growing into adults, sensing he was no longer needed. His mother Belynda was... well, who knew where she was. Lyn was impossible to keep track of, and frankly, Ely and his siblings, for the most part, didn't care to try. That left their mom, Ali. The moms both preferred to be called by their actual names - it made them feel "younger" or something strange like that. Ali, as it were, had stuck around. Something about her children left her feeling good inside - whole. So she was wandering around - maybe not in the immediate area of her children, but she always came back.
This morning, Ely had discovered something... troubling. A few moons prior he had encountered a rather beautiful Ucolian female, her coat shimmering so much he'd thought her an angel at first. Although, it seems she was not much of an angel - because this morning he found out their tryst had produced something... less than desirable.
At least, Ely was not desiring of it. The female may as well be content with the turnout, but Ely was not so sure. However, he was lucky he only had one charge - from what he was hearing, the female had three. The thought made his head dizzy.
Elsewhere, Ali was picking her way back to the clearing she normally holed herself up in at nights. She enjoyed being so centrally located to her kids, as it brought her all the more closer to individuals who may want to dote upon her. She grinned at the thought until the actually entered the grassy space. Her son, Ely, widely accepted as the disappointment of the litter, despite his rather pleasing appearance, was pacing about the clearing in angst. Quirking a brow, she watched as Ely nearly jumped out of his skin when he noticed her.
"Ali" he spoke without meaning to, heaving a great sigh. The female glanced at him, brow still quirked. His mind raced with ways he could possibly break the news to her, knowing she'd be disappointed further with his foolish actions. Ely's skin was overwhelmingly warm as he licked his lips nervously, wishing he could calm down.
"Well?" His mother finally spoke, walking further into the clearing and settling herself in front of him, sitting tall. She was still embittered by the fact that he grew to a size slightly larger than herself, typically enjoying towering over others. The lack of apparent power had to be made up for somehow. "What is it, Ely? I haven't got the rest of the night for you to waste."
Ely lowered his eyes, not quite wanting to meet hers, as he slouched away. She was about to open her mouth to snip at him when she saw he was fetching something from behind one of the clearing's large boulders. Tilting her head, she watched as he bent lower and began to drag forth a seemingly glowing box.
He could not feel any more shame than he did at this moment, packing his way into the clearing with the corner of the box clutched in his mouth. Finally, he reached a spot in front of her and settled into a sitting position, keeping his head low. Ely did not want to meet her eyes. He did not want to see what lie behind them.
Never would the boy have guessed at the expression on his mother's face. She appraised the box, confused until she recognized the swirling pattern on the bottom as the same one from his paw. Ali glanced between the two, making sure, and her face lit up. It did not occur to her that she was now a grandmother, as Ely thought would happen. Instead, her only thoughts were that her wretched son had finally done something right - producing a new minion to dote on her.
"Oh, Ely," she spoke, her voice softer than he'd ever heard it. He peeked a glance up and saw the wonderment plastered on her face as she picked her way closer to the box, drawing in its scent. "It's beautiful!" Ely was bewildered watching his mother curl herself around his box, a contented smile on her face. He had never imagined that her reaction would be good, particularly this good. Cautiously, he started to smile.
Glancing up at her son, Ali also smiled. She reached out a paw to rest on his hind, suddenly feeling very sleepy, snuggling up with this box, her new minion. "You did well, Ely," she stated before closing her eyes and cuddling further into the box.
Now he was grinning. Ely had never managed to please one of his mothers before. Had he known that knocking up a female was all it took, he would've done so sooner! Feeling particularly proud of himself, Ely silently removed himself from the setting and stalked off into the woods. He needed some quality time alone to reflect on the good deed he'd pulled off those many moons ago.
