Yvaine Vaire was not used to this life. She had been born for something different. But the terror in her heart had persuaded her to leave everything she had known to find her sister. She was welcome back there, officially, she was on business. However, her time of staying there, of living in the Flock was gone. She had no idea what she would find out about her sister, or if she would find out anything.

Where had she gone? Why had she not returned? When she thought of it, and it was all she could think of, she thought of Eirene Skylla lying somewhere hurt. She could be dead. Yvaine might never know.

Tears smarted in her eyes, but she was a warrior. She could not cry. If Eirene was dead, she would know right. She would feel it? She thought so. All she had to do was hold on to hope.

Squaring her shoulders, she marched straight up to the stallion a little ways away and let out a little cough to get his attention.

The grass around him was sweet and tall, and Herod took his time looking up at the intruder who had interrupted his grazing. He was about to scold whoever it was for sneaking up on a stranger in the plains of all places when he realized just what had approached him - a female. And usually that never happened, not even back home among the herd he'd come from. "You're a very forward one," he said, gold eyes scanning down her form. The blue of her coat matched the dim blue of an autumn sky, and the feathers that crowned her head shone in the sunlight, their edges looking impossibly soft. The cloth she wore around one shoulder unfortunately hid a bit of her form from view, but it was the wings, the spikes, the tail that interested him. And, as he looked down further, eyeing her long legs, the jewelry. And the talons.

For a moment, he almost rethought his approach to her, but then remembered that she had been the one to approach him. "A pretty one too, in a sharp, shiny sort of way." He smiled a wide, genuine smile at the mare, hoping his words didn't offend. He had yet to meet a mare he didn't offend in some way or other - usually by flattery - and had long learned it was too hard to play at not being himself. He liked to look and praise and pay attention to appearances. They were as important to first impressions as attitudes were. "Is there something I can do for you?" he asked, winking at her.

Yvaine didn't like the way he looked at her like he would devour her. Her cheeks were hot as flames when he spoke to her. Give her a battle, a battle would be easier than this. She'd rather pin him down and threaten him with her talons than banter. But she couldn't do that, it was not accepted out here in the wide world. "Thank you," she said choking on the words a little. "You can help me, I'm looking for my sister. Her name is Eirene Skylla, she's shades of blue with daggers sticking out of her. She always wears a hood. Have you seen her?"

Herod's brows rose, and he looked the mare over again. "Were this not your sister you speak of, I would ask if you spoke of yourself. Are you and she twins?" He could practically feel the filth descending on his mind. Then he rethought what the mare had said. "Daggers sticking out of her? Did she get in some kind of... strange trouble?" The filth thickened into a muck, and he tilted his head, looking at the mare before him in almost a new light. "Is she as dangerous as you appear to be?"

Yvaine Vaire's cheeks colored hotly with fury and embarassment. "I need no flattery from you. This is a serious matter and I would appreciate your cooperation. And she is as dangerous or more so than I am. I am not taken lightly." She glared at him with cold eyes, putting on her best guard face to try to get him to cooperate.

"She was born with them. A curse of a dark tunnel, if you must know though it is not your concern. Have you seen her? She could hardly be unnoticeable." There was the truth of it though, he had given no reaction to her question about her sister. Which meant, he had not seen her. No one had so far.

Her heart ached badly in her chest as he day went without news of Eirene. "You have not seen her." She stated it baldly.

"If you think being called dangerous is flattery, you're in the wrong business, looking for your sister," he said, his easy smile becoming tight at her words. Oh, she would pay for that. She might not want to be taken lightly, but that was how Herod took everything. "As for unnoticeable," he continued, completely disregarding her "serious matter" for her attitude, "you were almost unnoticeable. Did you miss how long it took me to even hear your little cough? Now, while you were certainly noticeable once I looked up, before that is a different matter." He took the opportunity to look her up and down again, turning his normally friendly gaze into one that was certain to make her skin crawl. He hated doing this, hated acting the lecher - he wasn't one, truly; he just liked to appreciate beauty where he saw it - but she wasn't being very nice, herself. And she was asking him for a favor. It would be one he would give when he saw fit, and not before, he decided.

"Be that as it may, isn't it possible that I could have seen her?" he asked innocently, reaching down for a mouthful of grass, as though he would return to his grazing. Before his muzzle reached the ground, though, he turned his head to look at her for another moment. "Or do you think I would be too unnoticeable for her attentions?" He pulled up a bunch of sweet grass, gazing at her while he chewed.

Yvaine's fair skin coloured up brightly at his words. She felt anger rise hot and boiling in her body until she thought it would consume her. But then he said those words that hooked her back in. All thoughts of her distaste for him, her anger, and her fury were gone like smoke. He had hooked her with that simple statement that he might have seen her sister.

It was like slamming a door then at the last moment leaving it open a crack. There was enough light to come through that crack to give her hope--enough hope to kill her.

She swallowed her pride, and tried to think of how to placate him. "I am sorry. I didn't mean to offend." The words felt like ash in her mouth, but she had to make him believe that she was sorry--she was, even if it was just because of what he might know.

"Please, have you seen her. She would have noticed you, I'm sure."

Herod watched as the sharp mare before him seemed to melt into a puddle of desperation and yearning at his words, and then out and out apologized to him. Gods, stop this torture. Whether the prayer was meant for himself or for the poor mare begging for his help, he wasn't sure.

Swallowing his grass, Herod lifted his head to look at her again. He sighed. "Hear me out before you decide my fate," he said softly. "I'm not whatever disgusting creature you probably think me to be. I've not seen your sister, but you obviously are missing something without her. I'll help you look for her, if you'll let me, to make up for the beast I've been." Just don't slash me open and leave me here to turn the plain red, that's all I ask.

Yvaine could see it in his face and hear it in his voice when he looked up at her. It was like a resounding slam within her heart. She should be strong, stalwart and ummoveable. But everything inside of her seemed to crumble until she realized that she was laying on the grass, her legs folded up beneath her. She felt numb, too numb to summon up the urge to slash him open. The thought and intent were there, but her limbs were too heavy too move. Her mind too tired to think.

A tear streamed down her face and a sob choked in her throat, before she stifled them. She could not weep like this. She had to be strong.
