Eiryn had had some mixed deliberations with herself after she had made a wish on the bright star that had beckoned to her. She justified her actions as unselfish. The mare knew that she could be a great parent if only given the chance. Eiryn thought that maybe she had had something with the stallion Skaalbjorn. He would have been her first chance with romance but their friendship settled out to be that of a platonic nature. The half-angeni still kept in contact with the Kalona stallion and his family though. There was no reason to shun someone just because things did not work out to possible expectations.
Reminiscing on what was not there thought would not improve what she deemed a momentary funk at the moment. It had been a few days since making her wish and it seemed as if nothing had come of her actions. Eiryn peered once more out of the secluded thicket that she had stumbled across before letting her eyes close. She thought that there was the chance that she could dream about the family she would have one day.

It was sometime during that fateful night that the spirits of the Wishing Star granted one yearning mother to be with a surprise. A basket of multi-greened hues had appeared mystically at Eiryn's side. The basket wriggled a little bit with the life contained inside before realizing the surface that it was resting against was of a pleasant warmth. The life inside did not realize that it would change the mare's life in the greatest of ways come the wee hours of the morning.
For now the life inside the wicker container slept as deeply as the mare whose side it rested against, oblivious to the ruckus its appearance would cause come daybreak.

It was the morning chorus of the birds that brought awareness of a new day's dawning to Eiryn. The mare stretched languorously with a yawn before registering that she was suddenly not alone as she thought she was. A strange feeling of something resting against her side caused Eiryn to glance down and stumble backwards in surprise. A multi-hued green basket rested gently against her. Taking in the markings of the basket and the coloration on her own body the mare could only assume that this basket was hers.
Looking skyward, even though it was hard to do through a wall of branches, Eiryn murmured a swift, heartfelt message of thanks before turning her attention to the basket resting quietly. She needed to go out and start her daily weeding. The moment of clarity came when Eiryn realized that she would have to alter her plans until the basket popped revealing the new life inside. She could not leave the basket unattended. Settling down the mare yawned before gently nuzzling the basket's side. "It's alright little one. I'm right here for you."

The basket's occupant had slept deeply through the night. At the sounds that registered from outside its shelter one would only assume that the period of sleeping had come to an end. The occupant wriggled silently as possible before settling once again against the warm side it was nestled against. There was an unconscious recognition that warmth meant safety.
Ears that were actively trying to catch every minutiae of sound coming through the container caused the life inside to panic briefly. It was a mixture of words that finally registered in the occupants mind. "It's alright little one. I'm right here for you."
Those words calmed the active movements into the occasional twitching before the life inside quieted once again into slumber. Soon, all too soon would the occupant inside realize that its sheltered environment would become too confining. The wicker basket would be kicked to shreds leaving no doubt of its parentage.

There was no doubt in Eiryn's mind that this basket at her side presented a major shift in her lifestyle. There would be another living being that would rely on her guidance and presence for safety. Already Eiryn had learned that the first thing about being a responsible parent was that you did not leave your child unattended for even the shortest periods of time. That mistake had been brief but educational as the half-angeni mare had to chase off an interested predator that had been skulking around the area. After that Eiryn also decided that she would have to shift the basket to a new, temporary home that was far off the beaten track. She did not wish to take any more chances before the foal inside the wicker basket made its appearance.
Now Eiryn kept both of her ears pricked at attention. She was straining to hear any sounds that could mean danger before her gaze shifted back to the violent rocking motion the basket had taken up. Was this it? Was she finally going to meet her child?

Almost a sense of knowing that anything was better than the confined space it lay in had the creature inside the wicker basket exercising its freedom to move about as best as it could. It was too cramped to stay shut away for any further length of time. With a lot of pushing and straining the foal inside the basket struck out with hooves that were still small. Although what they lacked in size the sheer willpower in the foal's mind helped it to control the amount of power that was unleashed by those very spindly legs.
Light began to slowly trickle into the darkness through tiny rents in the weaving. Perhaps one more good thrashing about would have the desired effect and the foal could find freedom. Stilling all movement the foal centered its thoughts before fiercely kicking out at the walls that had become its prison.
With an audible noise the foal's thrashing dislodged the lid on the basket and suddenly the world rushed in to meet the tiny life inside.

There was nothing to do but try to offer a little encouragement to the foal inside. Eiryn remained silent though as the tiny life inside struggled mightily to free itself from the basket. Somehow Eiryn’s instincts were right on the mark. Not everyone would have appreciated being struck by flying wicker. Had her mouth been next to the basket that would have been her fate as the lid came crashing off, narrowly missing her nose as it was. Eiryn’s first glimpse of the foal inside was partially obscured by a thin green thing that shifted in the breeze. It took the mare a moment to realize that she was staring at a light, almost translucent wing membrane. The joy that followed was immediate as Eiryn forget herself and gently nosed the tiny form that was now questing about. What hit her in the face only registered a while later after she got over the shock of being kicked by her own daughter’s hoof.

At first she thought it was a trick. The foal inside the wicker basket had been in the dark for so little time that she had begun to imagine it being dark all of the time. It was only when the shadows shifted around her did she realize that something was causing the shadows to dance around her. She covered her face briefly by ducking it to the side in order to alleviate some of the tension that she was feeling. Apprehension still flowed strongly through her veins. Anything outside of her wicker home was considered potentially dangerous. The filly, for it indeed was a daughter sensed that danger was nearer than she liked and when a strange sensation of being touched registered she struck out blindly with flailing hooves. The shadow that had been hovering over her, blocking access to the light, suddenly pulled back and the filly raised her head to peer around in an effort to see what it was she had hit.

The throbbing sensation on her nose was too hard to just ignore. Eyes watering just a little at the shock Eiryn scrunched her face in displeasure. That had hurt. She could not chastise her daughter though for a reflexive motion. There was no need to say anything anyways. Eiryn's gaze softened as she watched the foal's head peer out from the basket. Taking a slow moment to allow her child to quest about Eiryn gently cleared her throat and the sound registered on her daughter's ears. Eyes that were a lovely shade of blue locked onto her. Eiryn gave her daughter a soft smile before letting her voice carry to her child. "Hello little one. You've made it out. I’m glad to see that you are safe and sound."
Eiryn’s gaze drank in all the features of her child. The wings worried her as she could not place where they would have come from. She was half angeni of course and it looked as if her daughter possessed flutter wings. Shaking off the worry Eiryn knelt down and nosed her daughter. She felt a sunburst of love swell through her and knew that she was definitely experiencing the love that a parent felt for their child.

After moments passing of nothing more seemingly coming towards her the little filly inside the basket stuck her head over the rim for a longer period of time to study her new environment. The large shape that had frightened her before seemed to have disappeared. Feeling a little braver she allowed herself to let her wings unfold to each side before her ears swiveled to catch the sound of movement behind her.
The large shape was back but her ears caught the soothing voice that was cajoling her and felt something inside relax at the tone and inflection. This unknown shape could not mean to harm her. Right?
The filly crawled all the way out of her basket just as the large shape touched her side again. Feeling unsure the filly froze for a moment before inhaling the scent of the one that was present. She did not realize that it would take her eyes a bit of time to focus on the form before her with clarity. For now she stumbled on spindly legs before dropping down to the ground.

Not daring to move a muscle lest she spook her daughter into flight Eiryn remained still and let her eyes track her daughter's movements around her. The mare sighed softly before making small non-sensible words of encouragement. Her daughter needed a name. Eiryn cast her mind on thousands of possibilities that could work. As her daughter dropped to lie down Eiryn stood as slowly as possible before nuzzling her daughter's small form. Her mind had selected a name that would work for this situation. "Sleep now little Aibhlinn. You have had a long day."

There was something so new about the chance of exploring that Aibhlinn was not aware that her small body had limitations. Part of her energy had been spent in getting out of her basket and a small part of her wished that she could just leave this place and explore more and more. As she tried to stand again to move around there was an unpleasant discovery. Her yawn was louder to her own ears than she could have imagined. She flinched at the sound before burrowing her head into the side of the large shape. Slowly her breathing evened out as sleep claimed her. She did not hear the name bestowed upon her so there was no reaction to it. The little filly did not even stir when her mother came up and cocooned her daughter’s tiny frame with her larger one. All that registered was that she was safe and sound.
