He was still bleeding when he hunted down Ezekiel, which was no real surprise: headwounds were problematic, even if this one was just a loose gash through one eyebrow, dribbling furiously into Veer's left eye. It had ruined the collar of his shirt, though, had soaked into the top of his cravat, which now sat loosened around his neck as he wobbled in Zeke's doorway.

It was late. He was definitely still drunk -- at least. Maybe he'd consumed something else, too; it wouldn't be the first time.

"Really though, this time I just fell."

"Really though, this time I believe you." It was said utterly deadpan as Ezekiel looked the other man up and down before directing him towards the bench against the closest wall. It was the one he'd set up for just such an occasion, where he kept his medical equipment when not in class or out working. There was a basin, a bin with a lid beside the bench, a desk. Everything he might have needed.

He'd offer a hand to Veer to get him to the bench and seated, push a clean linen into his hand to press to his brow, then head to the basin to wash his hands.

This was not the first time this had happened--Veer darkening his door, bleeding or otherwise injured, spinning some story to explain away the injury--it wouldn't be the last time, either. By now the doctor-to-be was very used to this routine.

"Just a dare, is all." He sat, and in the light, it would be clear his pupils were a bit blown, his expression a bit distant -- which meant that, at least in this case, he probably actually had fell. What he had fallen from, though, and what he'd been dared todo, and just how fare he'd gotten...that was still up in the air.

Veer leaned back just a little, closing his eyes after a moment so the room would stop spinning. Still bleeding, and when Zeke got in there, he'd be able to tell that this was going to leave a scar. Only so much he could do.

One long look at the other man was all Ezekiel had needed to know Veer was was hurt worst than a mere gash on the head. With a frown that seemed more annoyed than worried, the doctor in training pushed Veer's hand up to press the linen to the wound, then pulled up a stool to sit in front of him. "One of these times you're going to scramble your brain." If he hadn't already...

Drawing in a breath, he lifted a hand, holding a finger in front of Veer's face. Having been through this a few times by now, the taller didn't feel the need to explain the concept. Veer knew to follow his finger with his eyes.

"So what wa the dare?"

He followed, but twitchy, slowly, only too happy to sit and relax a little. Even as his eyes moved, blood spilled down into the corner and one twitched closed with a grimace, unhappy.

And happy at the same time.

His mouth pulled almost involuntarily into a grin as his other eye turned to Zeke's face, instead, the humor of all this winning through, especially riding on the peak of some kind of high.

"I might have told them that the bond between Chosen and Guardian means I can ride easily on Janah's back, saddle-less, while standing up."

A small sigh as Veer's attention wavered from his finger and onto his face before he'd finished. Likely it wouldn't have mattered, Veer's pupils were blown. He was higher then a kite.

Sitting back on the stool, he leveled the other man with a look of bored indulgence. "And does it?" He was pretty sure the answer was no. Ezekiel might not have known much about Guardians and Chosen, but he doubted the bond made the Guardian's foolish of passive.

After a moment he'd move to gather up a spool of silk thread, a needle, a candle, and a small bottle of some strong smelling alcohol.

Veer's grin spread slowly: teeth very white in his face, the expression one that he couldn't help. It was a little bit mischievous, very clear that he thought himself very clever, and he struggled to suppress it.

"....briefly."

He'd been in this situation before. The needle and thread didn't make him flinch, nor did it even wipe the expression fully off his face. "You've met her, right?"

It would probably be better for all parties involved if the tall man got the stitching done before whatever Veer was on wore off. Besides, he'd probably lost enough blood for one evening.

Bringing the stool closer, Ezekiel prepped the needle and thread, cleansing it as much as he was able with flame and alcohol. When it was ready he slid closer to Veer, and indicated he should lay down. It'd keep blood from dripping in his eyes, which would hopefully keep him from moving around too much.

"I have not. You've said a few times now you'd like to introduce us, but as of yet it hasn't happened."

"...now might be a bad time." Veer squinted up at him, and now at last the nerves kicked in -- because when push came to shove, he wasn't crazy about needles. Seeing Ezekiel with one in hand made him pale a bit and then close his eyes, trying-and-failing to go still. He grimaced, sprawled out on his back.

"Not sure I should stand up any time soon. I should sleep, instead, perhaps...." He shook his head. Bad idea.

"No, now is probably not a great time." Not with Veer's head still gashed and bleeding. There would probably be talk later about setting something up, then a lack of initiative on both their part to get down to actual planning. The same thing that had happened time and again now. Eventually, Ezekiel knew, he would meet the other man's Guardian. He just wasn't terribly offended that he hadn't yet.

A small smirk played at the corners of the taller man's lips as he watched Veer go pale, finally. He'd wait, needle in hand, for him to lie still again, before laying the fingers of his free hand against his brow. "You should lie very still, so I don't screw up those good looks of your's with bad stitches."

"Too late." He rumbled it without quite going still. In fact, Veer almost shook his head again to drive off the idea, before he remembered where he was and what was going on: then, finally, he froze. Poorly. Still twitchy in the legs, a bit.

"You're the worst doctor, you know that? No bedside manner. Shouldn't you sing or offer me candy or something?"

Ezekiel smirked again, applying a little more pressure to Veer's head until he finally lay still enough so he could begin working. Stitches were one of the few things he had actual sympathy for, or as close to sympathy as he ever truly got. They just felt wrong, no matter how they were applied or who did them. So Ezekiel could appreciate Veer's obvious unease.

That did not mean he was any less methodical and detached. It meant he didn't so much as blink as he started threading the curved needle through the other man's skin, pulling the silk thread through to draw the jagged edges back together.

"Then why do you continue to come to me when you need patching up?" Pale eyes flicked briefly down to Veer's face, brows twitching upward along with the corners of his lips. "There are other doctors."

Veer wasn't a great patient but -- Zeke knew that. He could just lean on him to keep Veer from wiggling and fighting, gone pale and unhappy under the ministrations. He really didn't like stitches, but at least he understood the importance.

"Other doctors have a problem with me." It was a little weak, trying to distract himself. "With my skin color, or my father, or my friends, or my reputation. You don't care."

And lean on him he did. An arm across Veer's shoulders, fingers strong against his brow as he worked at closing the skin with quick stitches. It wouldn't take long, and he only needed a handful, but Veer didn't make it easy.

"Should I care?" A strange little smile crossed his features. "You're coin is just as valuable as anyone else's." Ezekiel had never had a problem with the other man's dark skin, family, associates. None of that had anything to do with him, so why should he care? His father had tried to teach a certain sort of social bias, but it never stuck.

Veer's reply was just a flat, dismissive sound -- and then he remained silence while Zeke finished up his sewing, sprawled out silently on the table. Only once the stitches were tied off and the needle out of sight did he properly breath: a slow gust of breath out, eyes cracked to focus better on Zeke's face.

He didn't try to sit up, not yet.

"Yeah, well. Some people are bothered by the source of that coin." He licked his lips, fingers tapping out a nervous little pattern. "Are we done?"
