On top of a cliff that overlooks much of Soul Society lies the Sōkyoku. This weapon takes the form of a large halberd with the strength of a million Zanpakutou sealed into it. When released a colossal phoenix-entity is summoned which completely destroys the Soul of the person it is used upon. Although they are killed in an instant the pain of your soul fragmenting is said to be unlike anything else. This is only used for the worst criminals imaginable.

Agito walked across the bridge leading from the Senzaikyū. It was quiet , much less noise and chatter than what he had been used to recently. There was an attack going on that seemed to be reaching it's end. The intruders were formidable but the sheer number of shinigami proved to be too much for them. There was only one left, Moth, who Agito had his own encounters with. He was crafty but looked to be done for last Agito had seen of him. Agito was looking forward to the quiet again. He liked battle, probably more than he liked peace, but all the chaos and confusion is something that gets under Agito's skin. He considered himself an embodiment of structure and order. With his wrath he would make those bend to the will of the law, whatever that law was. Not because of "peace" but because he considered it much better than having people running around screaming and doing whatever sinful act they saw fit. It was Agito's notion that most people, if left unattended, will kill each other and their environment. He had lost his faith in "humanity", and whatever the similar concept is for shinigami, long before coming to the soul society. The soul society just gave him a way to do something about it.

Agito eventually crossed the bridge and stopped some distance from the towering halberd. Agito looked up at the blade, the moving clouds and his slight shifting; it made the Halberd's tip seem like it was putting him in a trance. Agito would close his eyes for a moment to take in the air, inhaling a deep breath and admiring the reishi surrounding such an impressive weapon."Such power..I could only imagine how it'd feel to be hit by this thing." Agito said aloud, yet to himself. He was a fan of kidou and the dark arts and could not help but be impressed by the share magnitude of reishi surrounding this thing.

10th Division - Third Seat
Nara Ellerose

User ImageNara looked out at the Sokyoku, the giant weapon of justice that had slain her uncle. It was here that her family had lost its place, lost everything. She often came here to think and reflect. The spiritual pressure here was strong enough that even she could feel it. She took a deep breath, and could almost smell the power in this place. She swayed lightly from wind and ale, but she kept to her feet and watched, wordlessly, like she always did. She often came to this place and reflected, especially after she had left the hurling hollow. It was here that everything changed.

Her family had been a wealthy and powerful one once, when she was a girl. Her undle Aarendor was a colonel of one of the Royal divisions, and the clan ellerose became a household name. Aarendor had grown drunk with power and had earned himself the sokyoku, and her family had lost everything. In many ways, this place was the most important place in Nara’s short life.

She was deep in thought and did not hear the approach of the 1st division Vice Captain, until he spoke. She jumped, the metal plates of her armor clanging loudly, and quickly jumped to attention, her fist clasped tight over her heart.

”S-Sir, I did not hear you approach! 10th squad 3rd seat Arnarra Ellerose, awaiting orders!” She stood at attention until she was told not to. She had never met this vice captain, but she had heard of him, if only from is reputation as a spellcasting expert. She hoped one day to be even one tenth as good as Vice Captain Agito, but she knew that was impossible. She had never been able to cast even a single demon art spell.

She resisted the urge to wipe the tear from her eye, as that would break her attention. It was dishonorable to cry where others could see you, especially over something as trivial as family position. She felt ashamed, but said nothing, awaiting her next orders.

Agito opened an eye to the sound of someone else speaking. He had been so lost in thought that he hadn’t not noticed this Shinigami standing here. Hard to imagine with her wearing a rather shiny and loud suit of armor. Arnarra Ellerose, 10th division 3rd seat; Agito had heard the name before. Whispers circulated about the kin of Aarendor joining the ranks not too long ago. Whispers on certain ears would hear, but whispers that turned out to be true. Those who knew of the tales of the past would most likely be worried about a descendant of such a person joining the ranks. Agito was now intrigued.

”At ease.” Agito said to the girl, understanding her inclination to be at attention. He appreciated her sign of respect, something most lacked these days, but knew that he was far from deserving of it. ”Why are you here and not out helping to hunt for the Ryoka?” He questioned her, knowing that he himself was not out looking for the Ryoka. He didn’t know what he was looking for in his question, maybe an explanation for his own actions. He couldn’t help but notice the girl’s fiery hair as he fully focused his gaze on the woman, both eyes open and trained on her. Agito wondered how strong the girl must be to walk around with armor like that on regularly, while most Shinigami wore just robes. Agito himself wore the basic black Shinigami robes with some extra light weight plating not too far from a form of lightweight samurai armor. The more he dabbled in kidou the more he realized how important it was to protect oneself, even from your own attacks in some instances. He had contemplated going full armor but it seemed someone had already beat him to it.

Agito knew a little of the girl’s family, but decided to keep that part to himself for now. He wanted to see what this girl’s character was made of and the best way would be to feel her out, without the extra weight of her uncle’s shadow bearing over them.

10th Division - Third Seat
Nara Ellerose

User ImageNara’s arms fell to her sides and she gulped as she was questioned on why she wasn’t helping with the Ryoka. The truth was she would have wanted to be one of the advance guard in charge of protecting soul society with sword and spell.

”My task was to ensure order and civility in the Rukongai. There was talks of unrest in response to the attack among the citizenry, and I was sent to keep the crowd calm. I’m off duty now, Sir.” She said, very matter-of-factly. She left out the part about the pub she visited afterwards, with a twinge of embarrassment.

”I come here to think…”, she admitted, her eyes falling to the ground. She remembered the day they used the sokyoku on her uncle. Some were afraid he would survive it. None hoped that he would. That was her legacy. The name Ellerose would forever be associated with tyranny and corruption. She did the best to shake the thought from her head as she turned fully to Agito.

”Would you like for me to leave or…?” she asked sheepishly. She was lower rank than this vice captain, and would not want to be in his way. She had other places she could go, places with less history.

In truth, Nara didn’t know why she always came here. It wasn’t a peaceful or happy place for her. Perhaps she wanted a reminder of why she had to follow the path of honor, to make up for the dishonor Aarendor had brought upon her family. When he had finally died, everyone had cheered. She heard rumors that the Sanada clan had thrown a party, but she didn’t think that was true. Either way, nobody had mourned her uncle. That was a lot to undo for one girl.

Her eyes went up to the sokyoku again. A lot to undo indeed.

”You’re fine...” Agito said to the Tenth Division’s third seat. He didn’t mind if she stayed, she wasn’t bothering him. Even if he did mind, Agito was only a lieutenant of the first division. The little power that he did have as lieutenant was mostly over his own division. He did technically outrank her, but that was something most hardly acknowledged. If Agito had been a captain he would probably have felt a little different, but as a lieutenant he expected nothing of the other squads and their members.

Order and civility..it was music to Agito’s ears. There were actually people assigned to keep the people from their annoying emergency tendencies, like crowding the common areas and flooding the exits. It were the people like this that truly made a difference for the common citizen lacking common sense. Agito felt that this Shinigami , this Nara Ellerose, performed the duties of a true warrior of justice today. She played a vital role that doesn’t always get its proper recognition. But it was something similar to what they all go through as they move up the ranks, doing work that your superiors take he credit for. It was alright though, at least for Agito. He would just move up and be the one to take the credit one day, simple.

”I’m surprised to see an Ellerose back within our ranks so soon.” Agito said casually. He was not one for beating around the bush too long. ”Do you not hold any resentment towards us and this very weapon?” Agito asked the woman, wondering what her answer would be. He would motion towards the massive weapon used for execution of only the most dangerous of beings. Agito wondered if the woman had an ulterior motive for joining, but also knew that if she did she most likely wouldn’t say anything about it to him right here. So why ask? Agito asked to see her reaction, often times the first reaction after being confronted could tell a lot about someone’s character; was she the type to get angry and snap or the type to get sad? Maybe she would be something in between or completely different. Agito would find out soon enough.

User Image”I never met my uncle. The ones among our clan that did had no more love for him than I did, and in any cases quite a bit less.” She looked up to meet Agito’s gaze.

”The punishment for slaying another shinigami is death. This is one of our oldest laws. My uncle violated that law, and recieved the punishment that was prescribed by tradition. The laws of Soul Society are just. I hold no resentment.”

Nara looked back up at the sokyoku. She hoped that she would never see it swung again. She had been just a girl when Aarendor was executed, but she remembered that day as if it were yesterday, the image burned into her mind.

”After my uncle was executed, our family’s property was all seized. He had payed for us to live well, but in his absence, we fell into poverty. I grew up in Northern Rukongai. I never dreamed that I would one day be a shinigami….” Nara paused, meeting Agito’s gaze again.

”I can only pray that some day I can be good enough to make up for the sins of my uncle and restore honor to my family.”

It was the truth. Nara had never dreamed that she could be a shinigami, so she settled with being as much like one as she could: a true hero. It was in her heroics that she was scouted by a shinigami who didn’t know who she was, or the sins of her family. Nara wondered if she would have ever been chosen if her name had been known. Even so, she would do everything she could to make their decision to allow an ellerose to become a shinigami one that they would never regret. She owed that much to her family.

╔═FIRST════════════SQUAD═╗

A woman, who's uncle had been tried and executed as an enemy of the soul society, now here to bring honor back to her family name. If this were an opera it'd be the perfect show for Agito. Everything about this woman's story moved Agito. "I am sorry to hear of your family's struggles.." Agito said sincerely. He had his own experience with poverty before joining the ranks, something that was always in the back of his mind. Agito could only imagine the things Arnarra went through, with her family's name having a stigma on top of her being a woman, which came with it's own struggles, especially in poverty stricken environments. For her to take all of that and come out with the drive to join the gotei and actually help them..that was a sign of a fine moral compass; one of many signs Agito had been picking up through this conversation. Why did this woman seem so pure? Like an angel, strong and incorruptible even in the worst of conditions. Either that or she was just foolishly chasing acceptance from the very people that shunned her and her family. Agito could make a few assumptions about her based on their conversation so far, and her being foolish was not one of them. While obviously nervous, she seemed to become very confident and unmovable when speaking about her personal thoughts and feelings, she did not seem like someone who could be easily lead astray.

When Agito looked at this woman he saw similarities to the vice captains of the 7th and 3rd divisions, Rin Akagi and Yuisis Sanada. They were powerful women who had a strong presence. There was just something about them that made one feel like they were safer with them around. Agito would look to the side for a moment as he thought of Vice captain Sanada. It brought back, to the front of his mind, that he had left her and the hunting crew to finish off Moth. He did have some important training to get done, a training session that only comes once or twice in a lifetime..but he wondered if he made the right decision. Agito was hoping to receive a hell butterfly confirming Moth's capture or disposal sometime soon. "Honor.." Agito said aloud, pondering the idea behind the term and whether or not he could say he had any of it. It had been a long time since he last thought about honor..a term that seemed to fantastical to really exist. Everyone had their hidden agendas, everyone was just trying to get ahead, there was no room for things like honor. "Does Honor even really exist?" Agito asked with a slight chuckle. He asked in a joking way, not expecting the third seat to actually have an answer for a question like that.

10th Division - Third Seat
Nara Ellerose

User ImageNara didn’t respond for a while, looking out at the horizon, as if deep in thought.

”I don’t know if honor exists anymore. Sometimes I feel like it doesn’t, and I’m the only one who still pretends like it does. But it has to, at least for me. It’s all I have. My house lost it’s honor with my uncle, and we fell from grace and struggle as a result. If a loss of honor can cause so much pain, it has to exist… doesn’t it?”

Tears began to brim, unbidden, at the corner of Nara’s eyes, but she bit her tongue and held them back. She could not let a superior officer see her cry. Not here. She hadn’t cried even when Aarendor had been killed. She watched the whole time, like the brave little girl she was.

”Restoring honor to my house is our only hope. I will not be the kind of shinigami my uncle was.” Nara turned towards the hill, looking at the giant polearm, but not seeing it. When the strike fell, so many years ago, the crowd had gathered and cheered. Cheered for Aarendor’s death. She had only watched, wordlessly, and vowed never to let herself become as hated as her uncle. She would be the opposite, a hero who protected the weak. Loyal and true. Since that day, she had worked tirelessly to achieve her goal, and she was a shinigami now as a result. 3rd seat of her division. The division that was focused on honor.

The day she had graduated the academy had been the happiest of her life. Her family had been there, despite the stares they got. They had all been so proud of her.

She wondered if they were still proud of her. She hadn’t seen them for months; she was far too busy.

The crowd cheered and she watched wordlessly as her family’s honor died.

The crowd cheered and she watched wordlessly as it was reborn.

When Nara said that she felt like she was the only one still pretending, it touched Agito. Agito felt that way about certain things too, along with most of the world. Everyone had their own personal battles that they fought every day, trying to change the world instead of letting the world change them. The only problem was, with every change to something you may like, you may be changing from something someone else is enjoying. For instance, while some might have looked at Aarendor's execution as a sign of better things to come, the Ellerose would know it as the start of many trials and tribulations. The Tenth Division's third seat had a point; if one could lose so much and be treated so poorly just off of one's "honor" then it did have to exist. While it might not have been tangible it was still measurable in a sense that one person may be perceived as having more honor than another. There were also deeds that were generally considered more honorable than others so there was even a way to increase or decrease one's amount of honor. So it did, in it's own way, exist. Agito came into this conversation feeling that he already had life's hard questions figured out..and with just one conversation that notion had been shattered. it was strange that one who studied dark arts like Agito could be so closed minded about something like this. That just goes to show how clouded one's mind becomes when they only focus on the negatives.

"It's good that you have drive to be someone better, but don't be too hard on your uncle." Agito said while looking around to make sure there wasn't anyone else listening in too carefully. "He was powerful and power often forces people to make hard decisions. I won't pretend to know the motive for his crimes, but I'm sure there's more to it than what we've been told." Agito had only heard rumors and stories about Aarendor's dramatic tragedy but he had enough experience with how the Gotei releases information to know that things are covered up and rearranged all the time. The winner of the war is usually who decides on what "history" is passed down. Agito's words may have seemed suspicious to some, he was defending a criminal, but Agito's view on things was just not that black and white.

"My uncle loved power above all else. His love of power drove him to seek out more of it, and he didn't care who he had to abuse or even kill to get it. I will be nothing like him."

Her voice was resolute. this was somethig that had occupied much of her thoughts since she was a little girl. She had always known that her main goal in life was that she wanted not to be like Aarendor, and to undo the evil that he had brought into the Soul Society. She looked off into the distance for a moment, seemingly deep in thought once more.

"Did you ever meet my uncle, Vice Captain Mibu?" she asked, earnestly. She wasn't sure how old this vice captain truly was (as you could never quite tell among the shinigami), but if he was old enough, perhaps he could have even been a shinigami at the same time as Aarendor Ellerose.

Aarendor had been known to be a tyrant, even if he was fiercely loyal to soul society. Nara wondered If Vice Captain Agito spoke from personal experience with her uncle, or from his own experience with the path of redemption.

”I keep no anger for my uncle. Not anymore. He was a foolish man, despite his intelligence, and weak in heart. He was too weak and unsteady to walk the path of righteousness. He fell victim to his base desire for power and authority and let that desire shepherd him into mistakes. I pity Aarendor Ellerose for his foolishness. He was one of the greatest spellcasters to ever live, I am told. Such talent wasted for what? Power?” She spat on the ground.

”That’s what I think of power. Power ruined my family.”

Her eyes were angry for a moment, but she quickly steeled herself, wearing a mask of duty.

”I apologize for my outburst, sir..”

Agito nodded as Nara spoke of her uncle's ambitions, saying that his love for power lead him down a dark path. Agito often felt similar temptations but would not admit that in front of such a pure soul. corrupting the innocent wasn't his cup of tea, so much so that he even avoided small children from fear of his bad habits rubbing off on them. Nara was no child, but seemed just as pure with endless possibilities still ahead of her.

Agito laughed when asked if he had ever met Aarendor. He rubbed the back of his head as he contemplated the thought of actually knowing Aarendor and what their relationship would be if he had. "Maybe in another life.." Agito said with a nervous laugh, he must have looked older than he was..even though it was terribly hard to tell sometimes. "I'm actually only 26" Agito stated, knowing that there were some who were much older than he, but looked younger. They lived in an interesting realm with interesting rules of life. Agito listened as Nara let it be known how she really felt about her uncle. A foolish man who threw it all away for power, a common theme for many conquerors. The vice captain was a bit startled when the third seat spat on the ground, not out of disgust but because he honestly didn't see it coming.

" No need to apologize, you're completely right." Agito stated, in reference to Nara's comparison of power and her spit that was slowly drying into the ground. "Power is just that..and only obtained by those willing to lower themselves to pick it up." Agito heard that line from a television program during one of his trips to earth. He would never admit that, but it was perfect for the situation nonetheless. There was a reason that Agito did not feel he was better than anyone else, despite his power. He knew the things he had done, the things he had seen and done nothing about, all in the sake of power. He knew that he was no better than Nara's spit on the ground, having made mistakes that he would have to deal with for the rest of his life and maybe lives after. He was not sad about his fate though, having accepted the consequences of his actions. He looked forward to witnessing the guards of hell one day, and seeing just how fierce they really were. He was not suicidal but had accepted his fate and merely wished to go out with a fight when his time came. It was kind of why chaos annoyed him, he felt there was no point in being so disorderly if everyone is going to meet their end one way or another.

"You have any plans on moving up?" Agito asked the girl, wondering if she had aspirations to become a higher rank or if she was fine with just being in a seat. There were plenty of shinigami who made a name for themselves without even being lieutenant and were happy. Higher rank came with more responsibility and more paperwork and everyone wasn't cut out for it. Hell, Agito wasn't even cut out for the paperwork but he somehow managed to slip into the lieutenant spot.

”I-I’ve never really thought about it.”, Nara lied. Of course she had dreamed of one day being a captain, proving the worth of Clan Ellerose in ways her uncle failed to. Whenever these aspirations intruded into her mind, she was quick to try and wall them off. Lust for power was lust for power, no matter how noble her intentions.

”When my superiors see fit to promote me based on my own merits, they will. Until then, I will be the best 3rd seat I can possibly be, for the honor of my family. I never thought an Ellerose would make it this high up again.” She didn’t lie this time. She had dreamed of being a noble captain, sure, but she had never truly intended to work her way up in such a way. Her house was known, deserved or not, for their lust for power. She would not add fuel to that fire with her own aspirations, not when her family relied on her for so much. The masses would be quick to blame an Ellerose if things went awry with them in power.

Nara’s eyes went up to the sokyoku again. The crowd cheered when her uncle died. Would they come to hate her as much? She hoped not. The sokyoku was reserved for the worst criminals, the worst of the worst. Her uncle had been the last person executed by sokyoku. That would be a smudge on the name Ellerose forever. She only hoped that she could do enough honorable deeds to polish her name elsewhere, that it might be associated with grace and glory once more.

Nara felt tired from holding back her tears. Warily, she looked up to the vice captain.

”It was a pleasure meeting you, Vice Captain Agito Mibu. Good evening, sir.” She bowed, waited a moment for a reply, and then began her long walk back to her apartment.

She was suddenly so tired, and wanted nothing more to be alone with her thoughts.

”And you as well..” Agito said to the third seat, hopefully expressing his gratitude for listening to a war dog bark for a bit. It was nice to talk every once in awhile. A soothing chill filled the air almost immediately after the girl left. It wasn’t her leaving, but the presence of the last foreign reiatsu signature vanishing. The final Ryoka had been finished, Agito was sure of it. Almost on cue, a hell butterfly floated in. It related the message that the final Ryoka was no longer a threat, whether he was dead or captured was yet to be released but Agito could already tell the answer to that. His restaurant was suddenly gone, he could have been cloaked, but Agito doubted there would be a reason to cloak the man after he already killed multiple Shinigami. He would actually feel it more wise to make the man more easy to detect.

Agito walked to the edge of the hill, no longer facing the Sōkyoku but the entire sweetie itself as the massive hill provided a great view. ”How were they able to get in so easily?” Agito said aloud, yet to himself. He scanned the area as he scanned his brain, trying to find the missing link between these seemingly random pieces. They had come with no warning, killed, and were eventually destroyed. While Agito hadn’t seen what the Ryoka spotted at the 11th was like, he figured it couldn’t have been much more dangerous than Moth, if at all. These two didn’t seem like the type to attack soul society without backup. However, it seemed to be over for now.
