The talk he had with his wife had lingered with him, and he knew he owed her a lot. He needed to make up for it, as best he could, but really it was more about showing her that he loved her. Because he did, with all his heart. The idea that he was taking her for granted, leaving her behind and unhappy, made his heart ache when he thought about it.

So he took it upon himself to take one of the things she often mentioned she wanted to do, and get it into motion.

He had the day off from the library, and offered to take care of Sarah and the puppies while Kyndall was out. He took the opportunity to take his daughter to the store to help set up their surprise for her mom, and Sarah was absolutely delighted to be involved. Tony kept reminding her that it was a secret, and a surprise, and that always sent her into fits of excited giggles.

Her smile always brightened his day, and his heart felt very light as they returned from a very successful shopping trip. He had bought her a new dress to wear, bright and summery, and helped her change into it before he took her outside to help him set up. Of course, there was very little she could actually do at her age, but she was happy to be included.

His goal was to set up a spot in the backyard for a proper garden. Kyndall loved to cook, and always talked about having fresh ingredients. So having some vegetables and herbs and things growing in the backyard had always been on the to do list, though they had not ever properly got it rolling. It was not going to be the biggest farm in the world, but he hoped it would make her happy, at least. He was dead set on making it look nice, at least, building potting areas and setting aside a length of dirt to transform into the farming area. He even remembered to put in a scarecrow, which he tasked Sarah with.

Once everything was settled, the initial plants he had picked up planted with lots of space for her to personalize and adjust the farm as needed, Tony stepped back to admire his work. He had a few brand new gardening tools with bows on them, and Sarah and the two Corgi's were also sporting the bows. Sarah had her own set of miniature toy gardening tools, in case she wanted to help her mommy and daddy work.

Tony was wearing a female's sun hat he had bought for Kyndall, though he knew she would likely find it very ugly and never wear it. That was kind of the point, and he sported it proudly, looking ridiculous in it and a pair of thick gardening gloves. His overalls and checkered shirt completed the look, whatever it was.

Kyndall was hopeful. She knew her husband was not the type to say something and not mean it so when he offered to take Sarah she was delighted. She had boring errands she needed to run and was sorry to leave him on such a beautiful day but being an adult sometimes responsibility couldn't be helped.

Anyway, she'd get it done faster without Sarah with her.

She kissed them both sweetly before she left, promising to be home in only a little while. Then they would have the rest of the day to themselves. She found she was very giddy about that, getting things for dinner that she would not have to cook so they could spend more time playing and cuddling. For the first time in a long time she felt very light at heart.

She came home and dropped off her load, looking around with a puzzled expression. His car was home, had they gone for a walk?

"Tony? Sarah? Where is everybody?"

She heard a few excited yips from Gizmo, the pup chasing her sister corgi around the yard. Kyn smiled, walking outside in her dress. She was greeted by something much different than she expected.

"What's this?"

She laughed, shading her eyes from the sun and surveying his handiwork. And then him. His outfit was silly but at least he had not tried to garden in tweed suits. One of these days she might manage to get him into jeans...someday.

"Darling, you look like you've been busy."

She boosted Sarah up onto her hip who immediately ran toward her mom holding up one of her plastic tools.

"Welcome home!"

Tony grinned at her, beaming with pride and eager to see her reaction to the garden. He moved over to her, letting her pick up Sarah while leaning in to give his wife a kiss on the cheek from the other side. He chuckled, motioning to the garden.

"Well, I know how much you've wanted a garden, but I've never been able to set one up properly, and we're always so busy. I thought maybe now would be a good time to try and make one, and help you with it. You know. Something we can do together. Or with Sarah, of course, as she's gotten her tools and is very good at gardening. Aren't you honey? Tell mommy what you did with the scarecrow."

The scarecrow in question was still standing, though a little sideways. There was a large hole where she had dug to put it in, which was only half filled in. But at least she hadn't ruined her new dress, and seemed absolutely delighted.

"Tony..."

Kyndall was truly touched by the gesture. He was right, it was one of those wishful things that she often thought about but had not had time for since they moved into their new home. Between work and the new baby and everything she'd done in the two years since they moved in thoughts of a garden had simply fallen by the wayside under the broad heading of "someday."

She looked at the lopsided scarecrow and smiled.

"Is it true, baby? Did you put up the scarecrow?"

Sarah wriggled out of her arms in response and ran over to the thing, pointing at it and beaming. Then she saw the dogs playing and became distracted, running toward them, shrieking happily. Kyndall was charmed, by all of it, and fell a little bit more in love with her husband and her life.

"This is wonderful."

She slipped her arm around his waist and looked out over the yard at part of their little family enjoying the sunshine. Rough patches or not she knew she was very lucky to be this loved.

"It looks like there's still some to plant. Let me change and I'll help you."

Tony smiled lovingly at Sarah as she delighted in the scarecrow. Of course, the attention of her parents could only offer her so much, and with the promise of playful corgi's nearby, it was clear what the toddler wanted more. She ran off to play with Dogby and Gizmo, and Tony shook his head.

The corgi's would have made good babysitters, if not for the whole 'could not speak English' and 'were dogs' things.

"I'm glad you like it. Despite my rugged appearance and the way I wear these clothes so well, I am not much of a gardener. So ah. You'll have to show me how to help you take care of this."

He nodded his head when she offered to get changed, looking forward to spending some quiet time with her, doing something as simple as taking care of the garden. Hopefully he did not end up killing all the plants, as he had never really been good with trying to have potted plants when he lived alone.
