An adventurous scamp and a fiery redblood meet by chance one night in Four Fronds
PostPosted: Mon Jul 27, 2015 6:45 pm

The Four Fronds train from Chittentown chugged to a halt in the station. Excitedly, Treide sat on her knees and peered out the glass at the splendor of the city. Many, many highbloods walked around in scant clothing, enjoying the moons rays. "Dad, dad! Look at all those highbloods and wow look at the gorgeous streets and what are THOSE!" Her shriek caused many heads to turn and stare in distaste, but she could really careless. Outside in the distance were large plants with pink leaves. CD flicked his hear and nudged her side, yipping something softly, "Trees...? So cool..." Oh no. That starry eyed tone made the lusus stiffen in worry. He started to yip a soft reminder that they were there for the Coliseum, but before he could get he to agree, the train doors opened. Treide bounded out of her seat, bowling over two blue bloods with shopping bags, and took off to the trees. The desert had nothing like this. Of course the little redblood was going to explore and have fun! A-durr. CD howled in fury and chased after her, making Treide speed up and giggle madly. He was just grumpy cause they weren't going to see any ALG matches, but this was going to be waaaay more fun.

Treide pushed through clump after clump of trees, plowing ahead recklessly into the unknown. Soft grass brushed across her toes and legs, tickling her limbs. She held her hands outstretched to each side in small clearing patches so that the grass could dust the bottom of her palms. Coyotedad kept close behind on her heels, growling and whimpering out warnings of danger. This was unfamiliar terrain and instead of being wise with exploration, Tre was just barging about like she owned the place. To her credit, Treide wasn't used to being watched or even near other trolls when exploring at night. When night rose, all around the desert would go quiet and still, except for the raging wind and sand that sprung up. Meeting another troll in those endless dunes was cause for alarm and joy. Wasn't everywhere else the same? CD said no, but she didn't really believe him. Life in the desert was all that the little troll knew and therefore was template for all other life.

Treide kept plowing through, noticing that the trees had gone from extremely thick to more spread out over time. The grass also became sparse and light against her legs. On the distant wind she swore she could smell salt... Stopping, he looked to CD for an explanation, but her lusus was just as clueless about this change. He'd never come out of the desert or mountains. This was all new territory.

"Hmm..." Well, if CD didn't know and she didn't... Treide broke into a lopsided grin and loped off, startling her guardian. Time to explore! This was so much fun. Adventures were the utmost best, really. She kept running until she stumbled onto a path. A path? Here in this wilderness? Hesitating, Tre made the split decision to bolt down one end. CD yipped in distress, but could only watch in dismay as the redblood kept going, giggling hysterically as she did.

It wasn't until a building came into view that the coyote child slowed down, panting softly from the exertion of exploration and running. "Dad? What do you think? Is it dangerous?" CD blinked owlishly at his daughter and sighed. Of course it was! It was a new hive! Who knew who was in it. Did someone live there? It looked barely put together and - AHH. Treide giggled and dashed forward, taking stock of the buildings exterior. She sought some way in, some sort of hole or opening... Maybe a window? Hmm. Tapping a finger to her lip, she considered trying to pick the door, but that was difficult and she didn't know how to do something so advanced...

"Dad do we scale it or tunnel below to get in?" CD shook his head, his ears flopping comically as he did. No no no! This was a terrible idea, "Oh come on Dad! It'll be fun!"

To say Alifax was accustomed to being in charge was a gross misrepresentation of the facts at hand. In Alternian society, that wasn't how it worked. Usually Alifax followed. At best, he was a grubsitter: he'd become very accustomed to that role, of late. What with shepherding first Dairah and Kursha and Forera around, and then Frossa (young Frossa, Alifax had to remind himself - though he'd never met Frossa the first time she'd been a little three-sweep-old wiggler) and her sweets-obsessed friends, Alifax was getting to be old hat at...okay, no. Maybe he wasn't any good at getting them to do what he wanted. But he could keep them out of major trouble, at least, and that was good. Alifax did find that in general lusii were a lot more threatening than trolls could be: he wouldn't cross one for anything, even now.

Still, the facts were these. First, Hazzan was becoming scarce. Second, Frossa ran from a hint of maturity now: she couldn't be depended on to do anything. Third, the NFL (they still hadn't come up with a satisfactory title for it beyond the acronym, which left a satisfied taste in Alifax's mouth - usually that was Hazzan's job, after all) needed overseeing. Finding FLARPers was so hard in Queen Regina's reign - no offense to her, of course. They'd said in the old days of Internet you could look up match partners online. Now, of course, you had to go out and find someone with a floppy grub, and dedicated FLARPing grounds were rare. That was why they'd conceived the NFL in the first place.

It was just...no one had ever imagined that a redblood would be the one in charge. Hazzan, maybe. Probably. She was the clouder of the group, right? Frossa, possibly. For her money. But unassuming Alifax had always been there just to provide literal firepower.

Now he was supervising the drones, most of whom had probably had higher blood than Alifax did when they'd been younger, as they did their work. This was the very definition of unexpected. "I'm taking a break," he told the head contractor, consequence in his eyes. "I'm glad everything seems to be in order, though."

Was this really happening? He grabbed his thermos and made a quick walk outside. There was a strikingly familiar kid with her lusus waiting by the side entrance. "Hey!" Alifax said, jogging over. "This place is under construction," he added meaningfully, eyeing her with a slight amount of mistrust.

...wait. Wait, he did recognize her. She'd been the one giving away free scrap metal. Um, he meant instruments. "...you were at Bloodfest, weren't you?" he asked, offering a hand.

Uhoh. Treide yipped in surprise as the older teen approached. He was a red too... So that meant he was safe? Still, CD was on guard, four eyes narrowed onto Alifax. If this redblood so much as wiggled the wrong way, why he'd... he'd...

Apparently have to bite through Treide, who after having been shocked, immediately bounced back to jovial and surprised, "Hey there, mister! Yeah, I was. Did you come by my booth?" It was unlikely she could recall everyone, but gosh... You'd think she'd remember someone who looked like they had rolled from the pan and into the fire, "Do you know what this place is? It sure is cool."

Wait a tick. Maybe she did remember him... There had been those Flippers. Uh. Florpors. Erm... Flappers? Flarpers! FLARP! Right, FLARP. They had a booth. Treide vaguely remembered it. Bloodfest had been Cra-zay.

Yeah, well, you could say Alifax had stopped by her booth multiple times. He forced a smile, though, although as with all trolls it was a bit on the threatening side: that came from having sharp teeth, though, right? "I did," he confirmed. "I remember, ah, crafting a lot of...noisemakers." Noisemaker was the appropriate word for what he'd made, although for some reason some of the things he'd made were of supposedly amazing musical quality. Alifax wasn't one to judge.

"It's, ah, dangerous right now - it's still under construction," Alifax said hurriedly. "In a few perigees' time it'll be a FLARP arena, though, which means it'll only be dangerous to people who've consented beforehand," he added, almost as an afterthought but that the sentence was so long. He wasn't that great at, ah, interacting with people, but he should probably get a little more accustomed to PR if he was going to be promoting the FLARP league. Which was probably the only way they'd make this investment back.

Not that it mattered much for, well, Frossa, but Alifax cared. It wasn't like they still had instantaneous communication technology, like his illicit books said. Finding opponents was a lot harder under Regina Marian's regime. "Unfortunately it's currently closed to the public," he said, looking pointedly at the nearest road. Had they walked here? He wasn't sure whether he could see this child's vehicle. "I'm Alifax Bunsem," he said, offering his hand again.

Treide noticed the hand this time and wrapped hers around the charcoaly trolls. Giving it a firm shake she considered his words and... forgot to drop his hand. Oops. "A FLARP arena, huh? What is FLARP? Is it fun? Because from what I know it does seem fun." Treide was all about fun. Would this troll be willing to teach the ropes? He seemed little interested in talking, but Treide brushed it aside like water of a squackbeasts back.

"Noisemakers? Heh, I guess you could call 'em that. They're flutes, or were supposed to be. Some of 'em were... not so great." IE most of them. But some trolls really crafted beauties.
