In the thirty-eight minutes that Max had been awake on the island, he'd stopped running for maybe four of them. And that was a generous estimate.

It wasn't all that surprising that he was still running, having made his way through the labs, into his new room, and back out again. The newfound stamina that his weapon provided was really useful, and this was a pretty cool way to test his endurance. A speed run of the whole facility! Yeah!

At least, that was the plan. As he hopped over the threshold of dorm building's door to meet the fresh air and sunlight, he nearly collided with someone. He felt embarrassed for a fraction of a second, but any apology that he meant to say was lost in the realization that she was totally amazing.

"A cat!" he cried, hopping backwards. "I found a cat and now I've gotta chase you!"

He clutched his head, fingers grasping his hat, making the puppy ears sewn onto them even more apparent.

"Ooorrr..." With a secretive smile, he leaned towards her. "...we can prove all that stuff wrong and be the unlikely pair who hangs out all the time and goes on adventures and sleeps in a pile together! My name's Max! What's your pick?"

He might have stopped physically running a mile a minute, but the rest of him clearly hadn't.

She was snuggling on the warm and cozy bed when Z woke her up, she yawned with a bed head, frowning her eyebrows like the Chinese word for eight i.e. 八 with bleary eyes. Thinking a cup of coffee (with abundant milk and sugar) would wake her up, she rubbed her eyes and grabbed something to put on. She made sure it had a hood attached to cover the hair she didn't have time to comb.

The said hoodie has long sleeves that she grabbed on the edge when she yawned and walked along the corridor, getting outside to Cafeteria. The coffee did work, she gulped as she realized what she was wearing and the messy hair and so on. She pulled her hood down and made a short cut back to her room. It was embarrassing when she always made sure she look nice and pretty, matching her outfit and accessories so she look likable. She peeked around, pushing the glasses up with both hands through the sleeves and dashed like a racing car.

She was only a door and one floor of stairs and one room to reach her room before anyone spotted her, yet, there was something blocking her way. She pulled herself back and the young male voice made her tilt her head. She forgot the apology and looked at her surrounding, thinking if a cat minipet had escaped. There was another head tilt when she found nothing and blinked at the trainee in confusion.

The sudden closing of distance made Shu widened her eyes in all surprise, mind in a state of short circuit until it clicked. "Me?" She asked, confirming she, who wore a cat hoodie with tail at the back was the cat in his words. "Nice to mew'cha, Max. I'm Shu." The petite huntress shortly accustomed herself to the setting. "I do believe dog and cat can be good friends, but I'm not good at running." Giggling, she accepted the offer cheerfully. Her honey colored eyes do look like yellow cat eyes, she thought, having them shifting vivaciously behind the pink glasses.

"Yeah! 'course I mean you!" Max nodded so enthusiastically quickly that it nearly caused him to lose his hat. "I've run around this whole...okay, most of this whole island, and I didn't see anyone else that made me go 'wow this is the most amazing person ever' and who also looked like a cat like I look like a dog and who also made me want to ask to do all those things. Just Shu!"

Hearing her acceptance made his smile grow even wider, until he gasped for no immediately apparent reason. Then his eyes were the widest bit of his expression, though a grin still persistently remained. It seemed almost like he just couldn't help smiling.

"Ohhhh, you made a pun. Ha ha! That was a good one! Pawsome!" He stuffed his hands into his coat pockets, and swayed happily back and forth. "I like puns. And I like running too, but I won't do it if you don't want. So no chasing."

For a very brief moment, his energy seemed to calm. He tilted his head as he looked at her, gave her a sappy, contented smile, and turned to offer his arm to her so they could walk together.

"So, what else do you like?" he asked, his eyes a bright flicker of blue as he glanced in her direction. "I know you've got things you like that aren't just things cats like, 'cause you're not just a cat - you're more special. I can tell!"

Her giggles didn't stop at all, Max was extremely amusing for his enthusiasm and cheerfulness. No one hates compliments, Shu also, and Max's were the most pleasing to the ear. She knew she might not be as amazing as he said, but it encouraged her to try for it. She wasn't always dress like a cat, but if he liked it, she would be a cat for him.

"A purrfect pun indeed!" She said with a mildly excited tone, happy that he caught it and fetched her back another nice pun. Shu laughed delightfully like a silver bell tinkling, rocking back and forth with her chuckles. "You have to teach me more funny English puns then!" she requested.

When Max gave her that smile, the petite huntress couldn't help herself to give the hunter a head patting with a small toe-tipping before she caught his hand in hers. Then, she grinned brightly. "I love desserts, hanging out with friends and reading manga-watching animes- and also playing video games. I'm quite a nerdy cat and I collect plushies! There's one thing I share with cats is that I enjoy giving hug assaults and I love to be warm."

She squished his hand lightly and looked at Max with her big eyes, seemed to suggest it was his turn to share something about himself instead of a "how about you?". It was a sign of intimacy, if she observed one doesn't mind the distance, she will actively close it for them unless you say something or do something to tell her. The tail attached on the hoodie swayed mildly with her unconscious small movements, as if she was really a cat.

The sound of her laughter was nice; most laughter was, because it meant that someone was really happy or having lots of fun or something equally positive, but Max thought that she had the sort of laugh that made you want to tell all the jokes you knew just to hear it again. It was like concentrated happiness would sound, if you gathered it all up in a bottle and shook it up and took the cap off again, and that surely meant that when she laughed, she was feeling really, really happy.

"Okay, I'll teach you all the puns I know!" And probably make up some new ones, if those ever ran out. "Maybe we can swap. Like a pun fur a pun!"

That one could have been better, but it was impossible to dwell on it when she pat him on the head. That meant he'd done a good thing, right? Praise! Though he would have been attentive regardless, it made him even more so, determined to listen really well to everything that she was telling him.

"Those are all really good things to like!" The response seemed genuine, and he gave her hand a slight squeeze in return, with a short little laugh alongside it. "What's your favorite dessert? I like cookies best! Do you have favorites you like to read and watch, or do you just like 'em all? I bet you've gotta have a favorite plushie, right? The most cuddliest?"

He gently squeezed her hand again, relieved to have happened upon her so soon after waking, glad that he seemed to have found someone who was as open and involved in connections as he was, who accepted him so easily. It made him feel like he'd made the right choice in coming here.

"I like hugs lots too, and the feeling of being close to someone nice!" He playfully nudged her shoulder with his, like two friendly animals might. "I like to know stuff, any stuff, and make stuff, like with paper and little things--" Pausing, he nodded down at the buttons on his coat. "--but I mostly can like most stuff if I know someone I like likes it, 'cause I like not being alone best of all."

Yes, he thought, this was the right decision.

"That won't be a fair exchange," her eyes took a side glance at the hunter slightly taller than her, "Do you need to reconsider?" Shu reminded Max that her English wasn't as good as his, albeit she's a quick learner.

He was smiling, and his energy and enthusiasm were infectious. His words as sweet as honey, a small jar of honey she can savour. She wished they don't have an expiry date so she can put it on her desk and relish when she doesn't have a good day. She would tell his words are as pure and clear as high quality honey. She wasn't sure if she deserved it, but like the candy jars hung high up in those candy stores, she knew she want it whether or no.

Shu allowed herself to enjoy that moment, with little guilt. "Pancakes! Donuts! Cakes! Those which will appear on a dessert buffet. Cookies isn't a bad choice either: chocolate chips, almonds and nuts, those with berry fleshes, yum-yum~" Her mouth moved, as if she was tasting one of the cookies she mentioned. "As for animes and manga.....hmm, I like a lot, but Puella Magi Madoka is always on my favourite list, it's a show about magical girls and witches. Also, Card Captor Sakura, another magical girl show. Ah, the classic Sailor Moon as well! All their costumes," she sighed dreamily, "I wish I can wear those outfits." She'd had merchandises like outfits or accessories from those shows, because she really liked them. Like that day, she was wearing a star wand necklace with her, it danced with her bouncy steps. "Ah, have I mentioned I love cosplaying?" She tilted her head sideways when she asked. Giggling, she answered the question of plushies. "Unluckily, I don't have one I like most, I share them with equal love. Like I cuddle with this one tonight, and another one the night follows. I collect arpakasso, alpaca plushies, I love their smiles." Shu beamed as to resemble how delightful that smile was.

Hearing he liked hugs, she immediately gave him one after he nudged her shoulder. She was chuckling again. She squinted her eyes and leaned closely to his coat to view the buttons and her eyes flashed with sparkles. "I know that game! It's a very amazing game! Wow, you make the coat yourself by putting buttons you made on it, that's so impressive. No one can steal it now." She giggled, amazed by his nifty hands. "I'm clumsy, so handy work unsuitable for me...." Shu pouted. "Anyway, like to know stuff and make stuff you say," she repeated after Max, "Let me guess, you're from Life division, am I right?"

Her eyes rolled horizontally quickly and another notion visited her mind, "Do you know how to sew?"

The only response given to her suggestion that he should reconsider was a teasing look combining nope and don't be silly. Max didn't want to waste time explaining any more than that, when that time could be spent listening to Shu happily talk about things that she enjoyed; so he listened as long as he could, interjecting and commenting only when it felt important to.

"Those're all good too! It's real hard to pick a favorite with desserts, that kinda was a cruel question. Oh oh! We should get something sweet to eat!" He perked up, so excitedly that it was a wonder that the puppy ears on his hat didn't perk up too, but was quickly distracted from the idea by the rest of her list.

"I haven't seen Madoka! Will you show me Madoka? And how come you can't wear the costumes?" This seemed to perplex him quite a bit, brow knit with confusion as he looked at her. "You wanna wear them and you like it, right? So you should! Is it 'cause of the sewing? I can sew some! Will that help? Would it--oh! Sorry, I couldn't remember and I forgot and now I just remembered, I am in Life Division, good guess! You're really good at making observations! Which are you in?"

"Yes, we have to!" She nodded eagerly to his suggestion but was downcast shortly. "Hmm, you look new here, are you given permission for your leaves?" As she thought of a good idea before he would reply, she perked up again. "AH! I can order a take-out, so stupid. Ok, that's it! Next time, I go out and come across cake shops, I will take some pictures of cakes for you to choose from. Then, we can find a nice place to sit down and eat them!" The satisfied smile on her face would suggest Shu was proud of her wonderful idea.

"It's really hard to pick a favourite but if it's cake, I love raspberries the most! How about you?" She clapped her hands for the great plan and curled her arm around Max's.

It wasn't easy to notice when she calmed down and looked forward afar. "Uh huh. My sisters used to make the costumes I needed to wear, my hands were too clumsy to sew, even a straight line. But they can't anymore." Tittering, Shu found this too unsuitable to talk about. "I will show you Madoka when I borrow the laptop from Mr.Dwight next time, it's a really great show! It's not any typical magical girl show, but it involves time leaping and dimension concept - Oops," She covered her mouth. "No spoiler hehe~"

"So you can sew. You can sew!" She repeated again, after eye blinking in amusement. "Great, you've to teach me, I want to sew a plushie of my weapon's natural form." She requested, then answered his question. "Thank you, it's a merit if you can ignore my intensive stare. Oh, I am from Death Division, intermediate trainee in ranking, living in basement level." She paused and added, "My room is pink and blue like cotton candy or bubblegum, 80% of my bed is occupied by my army of plushies."

The petite huntress nodded sagely, happy with her second introduction. No one said there can be only one introduction to the same person, like wedding. She zoned out a while recalling the amazing wedding of the Morris's she attended, more is better!

Before he could inadvertently give away just how new he was (and how little he'd listened to the pod attendant) by asking what leave even was, she triumphantly rescued him. He looked cheerfully relieved by this - or perhaps it was in part because she found a way for them to have cakes together after all.

"Yumm, raspberry! I like all kinds, as long as it's really sweet or has lots of frosting. Maybe I mostly like frosting." He stopped for only a fraction of a second to consider this. "But I like that idea! It's a really good one! And maybe the best one for us for now, 'cause you can show me your favorite place to go have picnics. Oh! Maybe we can share all our favorite places here, like, what if we went to one once a week--we could take turns with places--and we could make up sort of like a fun rule like different desserts for each place! And if we want to have a dessert we've had before, we've gotta have it in the place we had it the first time. That'll take a lot of remembering, though...but I think it would be worth it! Do you?"

With her arm curled around his, he held it more snugly against him, content with the closeness. He wondered if she left her sisters behind, or if she missed them, or if she could see that absence echoed in him too. He'd never had sisters, nor brothers, nor much of anyone, but maybe that empty space looked sort of similar. As much as he wondered, he didn't ask; he said he wouldn't chase when she didn't want him to chase, and he meant it.

"I'll teach you all I know, and then we can learn new stuff and get crazy good at it at the same time! Maybe we can both make our weapons like they used to look, like our first big project. And you can stare all you wanna! I don't mind. Whatever you wanna look at, you're allowed, for however long! But I might get kinda worried if it's for a bunch of days." When he stopped to think this time, he actually followed through, though it still didn't take long. "Orrrr maybe I'd just have to go 'oh no Shu is secretly undercover as one of her plushies and I didn't realize! I hope I didn't ruin it, better bury her in them to make up for it!'"

"The berry, not the trick." She intercepted. "Yum-yum, frosting~" The cat nodded in agreement, "I usually have those on cupcakes, on cakes, we mostly have creams instead. I guess that's the culture difference." Pinpointing sagely, Shu widened her eyes in maximum exhilaration. "Why you're so wonderful, Max. You've just said a marvelous game!!! I can show you around if you're new and we can have some amazing desserts and spend times together." She bloomed like a flower, even her eyes narrowed with curvature. She hopped and gave him a big hug as compliment. "No worries," she flashed Max a cutie wink, "I'm quite good at memorizing."

If he asked, she would have told him how amazing her sisters are. They were like her guidance angels, if like they said, she was really an angel, they'd be her wings. She loved talking about her sisters, even though she couldn't see them again.

Thinking of something funny, she giggled, curled up happily. "I bet Z will growl angrily at my finished work, like 'I'm not that docile, I look much MORE ferocious. This thing looks like a tiny kitten!'" She mimicked a coarse irritated roar with a picky tone, imaging the giant beast raised a finger to poke at the plushie with querulousness, eyebrow deeply frowned that would squish a fly to its death. "You're so nice, Max, we've to find someone with a sewing machine first before we can implement our big plan." The hunter was full of humor, Shu found it impossible to stop her laughter when he said he would be worried if she stared him for days.

She wiggled a finger in front of him with shrewd eyes. "Nono, Puppy. Death hunters are the best spies. You won't be able to spot me if I'm in my plushie undercover. Wanna try?" She made a challenging expression, like a cat ready to try something. Shu looked at Max from a lower angle, achieved by tilting her upper torso and pulled her neck back moderately.

What I was reading~
"Stalking: When stalking prey, a cat is often at her cutest. She will set her sights on the object that has piqued her interest, begin wiggling her hindquarters – which are often raised slightly above the rest of her body – and then lunge, pounce or spring at the object at hand."

You're welcome <33

The thought of not having frosting on a cake was a bit of a shock, but the cake she described sounded equally delicious, so he had no complaints. Any startled look he might have had didn't last, quickly swapped for the pinnacle of happiness and warmth as he tightly hugged her in return.

"We're a good team at thinking stuff up," he proclaimed, thinking their game to be very clever. "I think we're gonna be unstoppable!"

He stopped to strike a valiant pose, which clashed sort of heavily with his short stature and playful appearance, which dissolved as soon as he saw her impression of her weapon. The voice of the creature in his head still wouldn't do anything but mimic what he said or heard, so hearing another sort of mimicry was especially entertaining.

"Haha! That's so silly of him, 'cause it's a compliment that you spent lots of time making a plushie of him, right? I think so at least! And tiny kittens can be ferocious too! Especially if you try to take their food away, oh man. I won't take your food away, okay?"

Though far from ferocious, the look she was giving him in response to his comments about her hiding in her plushies was delightfully mischievous. This seemed like a fun game - a bit like a real version of the 'I Spy' books he read when he was younger. Imagining Shu in the pages of a book like that made him laugh again, which carried into his answer.

"Yeah! I wanna try! I bet you're really good at it." As she seemed to take on the demeanor of a cat preparing to play, he took on the demeanor of a dog being taunted with a toy, his eyes bright and wide, with a smile so large that it looked like this might be the best day of his whole life. "This will be exciting! I can see your Death talents at the same time too, yay!"

The Pisces girl's mind had thought of many things at the same time, when part of it was pondering what was the best dessert for their first upcoming gathering, another part was listening to Max and responded to his words. The valiant pose he stroke at her was noted and she broke a laugh.

<What're you nodding for, silly? Tch. If it's a ******** gift, then don't expect you must receive good compliments of it. If not, then it's a trade. Plus, the main point is I look nothing like a tiny kitten.> The beast growled in response but his partner completely ignored him and not thinking of delivering his message to the boy. "Yes yes, Max. I saw some fun video clips of hungry kittens climbed onto owner's leg while meowing wildly for food. So cute but be careful of their claws." She held up the hands partially covered by the long and loose sleeves, fingers curled up.

Narrowing her eyes at his chuckles, "You don't believe me, do you?" Her eyes bright and wide, not losing to Max's. "You will be so surprised, sadly my bed is too small to put the challenge on stage, I'll put it in my schedule." Shu pushed her glasses up to make a smart image. "What's next? How does your room look like, Max? Tell me about what you know of the game?" She pointed to the button on the hunter's coat. "Then tell me more about your family?"
