Even if she was an engineering major with extensive skills in mathematics and science, math was still a ******** stupid class. It was hard and it took too much time to figure out what the hell was going on.
"Do you get number 3?" she asked, crossing her arms and leaning back in her chair. They'd been at it for a few hours now, already having gone through one chapter of problems and on to the next. If high school math was hard, college math was even harder.
At least she had someone to do the work with. It was always better to study with people than by yourself. By yourself you just got frustrated and gave up, but with Sova she could make jokes about how much it sucked. "We should, like, get froyo after this or something. We deserve it."

Sova didn't have the same skills in mathematics. She wasn't awful it by any means, but it took a lot of studying to keep her grade up. She rubbed at her temples and groaned.
"Kind of? I got to here-" she scribbled out half a formula in a fresh spot so Talia could see - "but it doesn't solve out right." She slapped down her pencil and leaned back, stretching out her shoulders. "God yeah. With as many toppings as we can fit."

"Not that many. I don't want to like. Get fat." Talia flipped her hair back and was the very vision of valley girl. It was a wonder she was in this major at all with the way she acted sometimes.
She leaned over the table to double check her friend's work, seeing if she could point out where the error was. She then had to write it out herself, to be extra sure she wasn't going crazy. Then she perked up- eureka! "Oh it's like, right here. You forgot to change the sign." Those pesky negative symbols.
She went back to her own paper and continued plotting out the problem, eventually reaching an answer that wasn't a decimal and didn't go in circles. Talia considered that good enough. She slid her book over so Sova could copy afterwards.

She hummed quietly. "Yeah, right. Wouldn't want that." They were quite a picture, actually. Where Talia was carefully concocted beauty and well thought out diets, Sova was rough around the edges and hardly considered the meaning of carbs. What she gained she usually lost on hikes, but she was still soft and squishy in places that Talia certainly wasn't.
Plus, Sova wore the same hiking boots with every outfit. Fashion and beauty were beyond her.
She made a frustrated noise when Talia found the error. "I hate that a whole problem is wrong because of one stupid sign. I've done that like five times today." She scribbled down the correct steps dutifully and put a massive star next to the problem - she'd go back and redo that one a few times until she was confident she could do it in her sleep.
"This is the last chapter that's going to be on the test, right? We're almost done."

"Yeah I think so. The professor said there would be some extra credit problems from the next chapter, but I'm not in it for extra credit~" That was a total lie. After froyo, Talia would probably crack the book open and study all of the problems for extra credit too. She was the epitome of A type; she just didn't want her friend to have to suffer through her fate.
She was also wondering, in the back of her mind, where her friend had gotten star stickers. She wanted star stickers too.
Problem four became problem five, six, seven and soon they were one problem away. Regardless of how seemingly ill-fitting they were to be friends (the outdoorsy one and the valley girl one), both girls were equally slumped over the table in total defeat. It had been a long homework session and both were tired of the monotonous buzzing in their head that came from one math problem too many.
"Ugh. Do you have the answer? I don't want to do it anymore."

"I don't need extra credit I just need to get a B," she sighed. Most classes she wasn't happy with less than an A, but math was always an exception. She'd let her grades slip a little to preserve her sanity, absolutely.
A couple more star stickers were laid down as they went, but not enough that Sova was concerned. She was just being careful to lessen the amount of extra studying and cramming she'd have to do later by leaving out the truly easy problems.
By the end of it all there was a very real headache blooming behind her eyes and she was using her book more as a pillow than as a study aid. Finally fully defeated by their efforts, she pulled out her phone and searched the steps for the last problem. She stuck TWO stickers next to that one, and should have felt bad about it but she was just too tired to care.
"I won't tell if you won't," she said, sliding her notebook over. "I feel like we definitely need that froyo now. There's a place down the street we can go." She stood, stretching her arms up over her head and making a relieved noise as her back popped. School was hell.
