A ways after Bloodfest, a certain meddling lowblood decided to follow up with her 'best' – that is, most frequent – patient...

------

Psykgi finished cleaning her hive, wiping sweat from her brow as she looked over her work. ”Well!” she said, as her lusus skittered 'helpfully' around, ”That should be good enough for company, don't you think?” her hive was a well-appointed but modest affair, with a loft that held her respiteblock and a few other small things and several framed inkblot pictures. ”Good thing I didn't run out of green dye!” she said, opening her baking unit and squinting at the small cake she had made, ”It would have been sooo-ooo-ooo unhospitable to not have a green cake.” Ma'am buzzed in her ear, ”Yes, Ma'am, I did all my chores. And, I called him several times to make sure he knew how to get here. You've already reminded me, and since he's supposed to be arriving soon...” Psykgi paused as Ma'am's many mandibles buzzed again, ”Yes, the cake will be ready. It's not like its a big cake or anything.” Buzz buzz, ”Yes, Ma, I know.” she said, giving one of the cockroaches a playful swat, ”He's not prestigious, just a greenblood, yes I know, but he was an interesting greenblood and goodness, Ma, We've been over this! I can make friends without using them to rise up the social ladder... Goodness, sometimes the most interesting people aren't the most useful, and who says I want to use everybody?” Ma'am buzzed, somewhat annoyed but willing to admit that her charge had a point. ”I know.” she gave one of the roaches a kiss on it's chitinous back, ”I love you, Ma.”

And with that, she took the cake – a tiny, dense affair, mostly nutty more than anything, and frosted with a green-dyed slightly tart covering – and began to cut a few pieces, patiently awaiting her guest.

Poeias had a little bit of difficulty getting to Psygki's hive - it was a bit far from his, all the way out at New Hemi... wait, Civisect City! But thankfully, Lanata was there to take him so he didn't even have to walk! He hoped the rest of the flock would be okay without his guidance, but they were a tough bunch of woolbeasts.

He was excited to see her again, however. Her booth was one of his favorites at Bloodfest (next to the different darts games, which he adored), and he kept all of her cool picture blots on his walls to admire in his spare time. He had a lot of things he was supposed to talk about, and he enjoyed being around someone who really liked his puns and liked hearing what he had to say!

At the door of her hive (he was pretty sure its her hive, she gave pretty good directions!) he knocked and shouted. "Hey! I'm here for the psycho-thingy!" He really had to get what it was called. "Also, I brought my lusus! I hope that's ok." Lanata was pretty large, but not too big, so she shouldn't be too much a trouble. Plus he could just sit leaned up against her and he wouldn't need to get wool all over her chairs.

“Oop!” Psykgi said, grinning at a cockroach, “There he is! Right on time!” she moved quickly to the door and opened it, a few cockroaches scuttling out of the way as she did so.

“Hello, hello!” she greeted the curly-horned troll, her tusk-like fangs bared in one of her usual cheery smiles. She waved him in, as well as his big wooly lusus. Her hive was not the best place for a large beast to stay, but it would at least fit her comfortably for the evening.“Not-a-problem, do come in!” she said, “I've made cake and ensured that the couches are extra-extra comfortable! Goodness, I am so very excited for this follow up, you have no idea!” she prattled, leading him inside.

It was impossible to get lost in her hive, considering the whole layout was visible at a glance to a normal troll. However, Psykgi realized, Poeias was no normal troll. Goodness! she thought, How bothersome. Well, not really bothersome. “Chairs and a lovely endtable are over this way.” she said, using her voice as a guide, “Take a seat and... Oh, yes! Do you want something to drink?” she said. The cake was already on a central table, sure, but refreshments were always nice. And if they were going to talk about tricky things – which she hoped they did, oh goodness yes – then cool liquids helped to get people talking. Or was it warm liquids? Ah well, she would find out, wouldn't she?

“There's a cake too – you're not allergic to nuts are you?” she said suddenly, slightly anxious in her excitement. That would certainly cut a session short, wouldn't it?

Poeias lead his lusus into the hive carefully trying to avoid crushing any of Psygki's, and as docile as she was she didn't make a fuss. She decided to lay down by one of the couches, keeping an eye on her sweet little boy. "Oh wow, cake! I wasn't expecting refreshments," he said, although he wasn't really sure what to expect. Psygki's voice helped him navigate the hive thankfully, and although he wasn't truly blind, he sure had some major blind spots in his vision due to his massive curled horns. He wondered if his ancestor had the same problem, or if he was just kind of a loser. Poe managed to find his way to the couch, where he crawled up and patted the material. "It is extra comfortable! Like lamb's wool..." he smiled, always a lover of soft things. Like his boots and his sweater.

"Oh no, not at all!" he said, and grinned. "I'm nuts about nuts! And I hope I'm not too tough a nut for you to crack." The perfect set up nailed, just handed to him on a plate, literally! He took a slice of the cake, which as he brought it closer to his face he could see was green! Did she make this just for him? How nice! She was such a nice and cool girl, and he hoped they could be friends, not just for her thingy. "Oh um, if you have it, maybe some milk?" He was fond of milk. Everyone knew it made you STRONG, and he could really use more strength.

Psykgi squinted into her cooling unit. ”Oh dear.” she said, surprised, ”Goodness, I hadn't realized... I'm afraid that the last of my milk was used up with the cake! I'll have to get more.” Psykgi wasn't much of a milk drinker, and so she rarely kept track of it, save when cooking. Ma'am chittered – she could go out to get milk, but it was tricky for a swarm of bugs to pay in beetles. Very, very, tricky and possibly immoral, if she did it wrong.

”I do hope that's not a deal breaker! I have instant cocoa, if you wanted.” she said, drawing out a package of said wonderful powder, embazoned with a happy redblood and a whole lot of very brown liquid swirling around them. On the back was their longearbeast lusus with a straw – apparently crazy for the stuff. Psykgi took a moment to admire the package and it's celebration of sugar addiction and crazed self-destructive obsession before she set the kettle to boil. She did want cocoa, after all.

”I do want you to be comfortable, after all” she said, pleased to hear that her couches were suitable, ”I want to crack you, not break you... gosh that sounded horrid, didn't it!” she laughed happily, ”I hope not too horrid!” she said, as the kettle hissed and whistled with steam...

While slightly disappointed, cocoa sounded like a good substitute to Poe. "Oh that's fine! That sounds really good too," he said, tasting his cake. It was really good, and Poe took another bite, and laughed with her. "Not too horrid!" he agreed.

He was fairly comfortable here, and perhaps it was just his friendly and open nature that let him feel at ease with this, or perhaps this redblood girl was really just that good at her job. He wasn't sure, but he did think this was a good idea, talking about... his problems. Even when he was joking at her booth, it made him feel better. And she wanted to hear it!

Speaking of... "Oh um, how did you want me to start anyway...? I've never really done this before," he said. He thought of her booth, and the haunting ink picture of the howlbeast. Though he'd kept it, he hid it away because of how anxious it made him feel. Maybe that would be a good thing to start with, considering it had caused the most damage. Physically for sure! He flexed his mechanical hand. "Maybe with the howlbeast... Um, do I just start talking?"

”Oh good!” She didn't want to be a horrible host, after all. Hot water ready, Psykgi mixed up two cups of instant cocoa and brought the insulated mugs over, setting them on napkins on either side of the table.

”Basically!” she said cheerily, ”You start talking about whatever you want to talk about, and then I take it from there!” she sat – or, rather, plonked down into the chair opposite him, smiling. ”So, if thats where you want to start...” she leaned forward, ”Then... tell me about the howlbeast.”

Poeias Claudy picked up the cup of cocoa and sipped it. He could see the little swirls and bubbles in the mug, one of the few angles he could see pretty well at. It tasted good, and felt warm. He placed the mug back down and wiped his hand on his shorts nervously. Poe was almost never this serious, but this was a hard story to joke about for him.

"Well, it was about a sweep ago, maybe more... I was about 4? Anyway, the woolbeasts were out in the lawn ring, grazing like usual, and then I heard them scream. When I ran out, there was a howlbeast among my woolbeast, attacking them. It was the biggest howlbeast I've ever seen! Twice the size of a normal one! I panicked, right?" he said, reaching over to pat Lanata, who bleated gently. "The big beast was approaching Lanata and I could hear her cry out for me to hide and get away before it got me too, but I couldn't let her die."

His voice was beginning to shake. He almost became an orphan that day, which would have been a certain culling sentence due to his age. He'd never been particularly strong or brave, but that night he'd done something pretty incredible, if stupid and dangerous.

"I grabbed my shears, and ran out to protect her. I tried to fight the howlbeast! He paused, remembering how scared he was, even though all he could think about at the time was how he had to save the flock. The greenblood sometimes wished he didn't remember the next part as well as he did, but Poe tried to summarize it quickly for Psygki's benefit. "When it lunged at Lanata, I stopped it with my hand. I forced it right into its mouth and attacked with my shears but," Poe paused again, reflexively moving the mechanical hand as he did whenever he thought about it. "It ended up biting my hand off and then it fled."

He frowned, thinking about it. He'd tried chasing after it once he had his new hand built, and set up traps to try and catch it before it could return again, but he had no luck. The wolf still roamed at night and haunted even his sopor filled dreams. "I think about it a lot, you know? I'm worried it'll come back when I'm not prepared, and I won't be able to defeat it again and it'll just eat me whole, and Lanata too..."

NP! I'm sorry I took so long - had to come up with an appropriate response.

Psykgi listened intently. She wasn't empathetic – how could she be – but she was sympathetic, listening to his story with the gravity it deserved. It was certainly intense! A massive howlbeast, a desperate struggle, a physical piece of him, lost forever...

”I'm very sorry that happened to you.” she said, honestly. He was lucky to be alive, up against such a beast, but she had a feeling that he didn't feel that way. Not if the wolf haunted him so. And she could tell that it did, and that wasn't healthy! Not for him.

But that was why she was there: Psykgi didn't think she could handle a real howlbeast on her own, or even with Poeias – goodness, a beast like that would probably would eat her! But the mind was more her territory. She could handle a nightmare.

That's a reasonable fear./i] she thought, nodding. ”Do you dream about it at all?” she asked. She was willing to bet that he did, and they weren't good, but she needed him to admit it. ”About catching it, or...?”

Poe was quiet for a bit. "Yeah... I dream about it a lot. Sometimes even when I'm not sleeping, if that makes sense." He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, not really sure what he was supposed to do. He moved his hands on top of his knees. "I dream about killing it, mostly. Or trying to, and then I get swallowed up," he laughed nervously.

He was glad she was such a good listener. He never really told the story to anyone before, besides the mechanic who made his new hand. And she didn't care. "Um, it's not bad that I dream about it right?" he wasn't sure what it was she did exactly about these things, but... he had a great joke. "Haha, I mean, I'm so boring that woolbeasts count me to go to sleep!"

”What do you mean, when you're awake?” she asked, intrigued. She wasn't sure what he meant, and it didn't make sense to her, but she wanted it to. She nodded, listening. Yep – definitely not good dreams.

She laughed at his joke. ”And there’s only one of you, haha! I don't think you're boring... gosh, look at me!” she joked, gesturing around at her modest, if cozy, hive. Not that she was boring either, but, well... She leaned forward, watching him carefully. The dreams. She needed to address them.

”Well,” she smiled, ”I wouldn't say its bad to have dreams like that.” she said carefully, ”It's certainly not your fault, and it's not unusual... but, hmm...” She fiddled with her fingers.

”When you have these dreams, and you wake up from them, do you believe the howlbeast to actually be there? Stalking you? I mean a feeling, a sense that it's there, just out of sight...?” she didn't want to upset him too much, but this was important... "... Do you think its actually out there?"
