The girl'd been in a spot of trouble, and then she'd found help somewhere and been out of trouble and back to working -- and then she'd been sick, very sick, sick enough that someone had worried and gone to hunt for another doctor. Except, of course, none of them could afford a doctor. And so Ever came back from errand running to find a small group clustered outside the girl's room, none of them working, and he took it upon himself to drive them off to get s**t done. They protested, but obeyed, probably in part because they knew they shouldn't be there, part due to the black eye that darkened the left side of his face, and mostly because they didn't want to be associated with the goings-on inside that room. It meant that when Zeke was done cleaning up someone else's trouble, Ever was the only one there, lounging against the wall with soft hair falling into his eyes and arms crossed, awkwardly, scrawny and crooked, across his chest.

"Stay off your feet for a few days," he was saying as he finished drying his hands on the towel beside the basin, tone casual, lacking anything in the way of warmth. It didn't matter to him if she lived or died, because he didn't know her. Which meant it really didn't concern him much if she followed his instructions or not. He'd done what he'd been paid to do, now it was up to her and those tasked to look out for her to keep her alive. Metal rang against metal as he finished packing away what implements he'd need, all of them wiped as clean as his current surroundings allowed, and wrapped in clean(supposedly clean) linens until he could take them back home to clean them properly. He'd left a list on the bedside table with a list of medicines, some for the fever, some for the pain. Again, it was up to her to procure them, or not. Once Ezekiel had waked out of this room his involvement in this entire mess was finished. Closing the door behind him, he didn't immediately notice the lanky figure leaning against the wall. Not until he looked up to reacquaint himself with the layout of the place, probing his own memory for the exit. His initial response was was cursory glance , taking in the hair, the folded arms, before his gaze slid past him and down the hall. The second look was longer, appraising, as he took in the expression, the dark bruise marking one eye, and seemingly care-free set of scrawny shoulders. "There's a list beside the bed of strongly recommended medicine, assuming you want her to survive this." Again, that cool, detached tone. He didn't know who this was, but they seemed comfortable enough, either someone familiar with the woman, or possibly an employee.

"She can't read," Ever offered, easily -- dark eyes flashing onto Zeke's face. It would probably take a minute to recognize the mockery behind his tone: he saw a rich university boy, who simultaneously believed he was incredibly important and also that everyone else held the knowledge he did. Ever was familiar with the phenomenon, of course; he'd had his own healthy share of it, in his time. "...but I can." He lived among dancers and it had rubbed off a little -- in the lazy way Ever rolled to upright, scraping hair back out of his face as he did.

"More's the pity," he drawled, chin ticking minutely to one side as he watched Ever push away from the wall. "You'll have to read it for her." Or not. Again, Ezekiel didn't care. The money he'd taken for the job was a warm weight in his pocket. His work was done, as far as he was concerned. "Assuming she does as she's been instructed, she should make a full recovery. Bed rest for the first week though, the sickness was fairly advanced." He was operating under the assumption that Ever held some form of authority over the dancer, or at the least, knew someone that did.

"Less of a hash job this time, then?" It was still lazily drawling, even in accusation. Ever tipped his head to peer past Zeke at the room behind him -- which let the other man get a good long look at that blackened eye, the bruise that traced the edge of Ever's cheekbone. It was already turning green and purple around the edges, so it had to be a couple days old. "You didn't charge her again did you?"

It became rather immediately obvious how the other man might have obtained the blackened eye. He had something of a mouth on him. Auburn brows drew up as the accusations slipped easily from his lips, and Ezekiel gave a small shake of his head, lips tugging up into an amused curve. "For cleaning up after the inept surgeon they hired before me, certainly. My services are a business, not a charity. "Perhaps in the future you'll take more care to avoid these little problems. Save the girls grief and coin." He wasn't bothered by the accusation of having botched the job in the first place, because he knew damn well he hadn't been there. But he would turn the blade the twist, just a little, if he could get away with it.

And there, finally, he actually won Ever over. It caught his attention fully, dark eyes widening as he looked up at Zeke like he couldn't quite believe what he'd just heard -- and then he dissolved into laughter hard enough that one of the girls who'd fled poked her head around the corner to investigate. So she'd get his answer, not Ezekiel, and she'd get the bright flash of teeth in his face. "He thinks I got her in the family way," he explained, which made the girl roll her eyes and return to whatever she'd been working on. "Gods. If only."

Not the reaction he'd been expecting, but an interesting one, nonetheless. An arch of brow followed the laughter, though idle curiosity grew at the comment directed to one of the other dancers down the hall. She was given only the barest of glances, attention a little too focused on Ever, instead. He could have been the righteous sort, pure as the driven snow, but Ezekiel had his doubts. For one, he worked here, of all places. He'd never head of the devote whiling away their time in dance halls. Which meant the blonde was more than likely a deviant. Ezekiel's father would have sneered. The younger doctor seemed more or less unperturbed. In fact he actually smiled, though it wasn't exactly friendly. More a challenge than anything else. "Enlightening." He turned pale eyes down the hall, opposite the direction the dancer had peeked from. "I trust it's not a problem you encounter often, then." Tanned fingers dipped into a breast pocket on his vest, fishing out a pocket watch so he could check the time.

"Never once." He grinned up at Zeke as he said it and tipped his head just the smallest bit, in challenge: offering up the unbruised eye and all but pointing to it. He didn't say the words, but he showed them: got a problem with it? This one's still unmarred. And the grin said: but if you try it, I might hit back. Ever didn't look strong, but he also didn't look afraid to back down. "There's a reason I'm here, and it's not because I can dance."

"Is that so?" It came out almost indulgent, that lazy smile growing a touch as he slipped the watch back into his pocket and looked down at the blonde. There was nothing outwardly threatening in his mannerisms. "A shame, I'm sure you'd look a sight in a dress and heels."

"Don't you think they haven't tried." It would certainly bring a certain kind of clientele -- but it might, also, bring down a certain kind of trouble. Ever's posture shifted, hip slung to one side as he peered up at the would-be doctor, and he tapped fingers against his chin. There was still that challenging spark in his eyes, staying in place for a moment before he twisted to walk away. Ezekiel could follow or find his own path -- his choice. "You shouldn't bring nice things around this part of the city, you know."

Ezekiel offered a soft snort of amusement. "They've probably succeeded. I doubt it takes much to overpower you." There was a fifty percent chance that Ever was heading towards the exit, and if not, perhaps they would pass a bar. It seemed like a win-win situation, so he headed down the hallway after the smaller man. "Probably not, but then your little friend back there would die." No sugar coating the truth, just blunt honesty. He assumed Ever meant the implements in the leather bag he was carrying, though perhaps he meant the watch. Silver, polished and engraved. He had the look of money behind it.

"Mmm." the first chance he got, Ever was going to dip fingers into that pocket to try and make off with it -- but he wasn't dumb enough to try that just now. In fact, he put his hands into his pockets so he wouldn't be tempted. They'd have to pause, at one door, so Ever could duck his head in and make sure things were moving smoothly enough, girls sorting through costumes. He was probably meant to being doing it, judging from how one called his name after him as he ducked back out into the hall. "You look young for the position."

He could have kept walking, probably, but the interaction at hand was interesting enough. Zeke was no longer in a hurry to leave, at least. Waiting as Ever peek into one of the rooms, the doctor-in-training glance over his shoulder before the call of a name caught his attention; Ever. It was unique, probably not the name his parents had given him. "Observant of you." His shoulders moved in a shrug. "But we both know your girl couldn't have afforded a physician." It wasn't derogatory, just a fact.

"Can't really afford your sorry excuse for care, either." Ever scooped up a handful of abandoned towels from outside another door, and then they were exactly where Zeke wanted to be: the place quiet, at this time, but there was definitely the bar he'd been hoping for, even if it was a bit haphazard while the place was closed. "Doesn't stop you from taking everything she's got."
