The City Hidden Amongst The Roots

Under the roots of the small tree town of Elurik, lies a city filled of many secrets. Thread carefully, because what lies around the corner may just be your last breathe. Other than it being hidden with a tree in Elurik, not much is known about this map.

You must enter through the Town of Elurik or use a Teleportation Crystal.

The direction his companion had left towards mainly gave it away where he was destined to go, but the route he took had confirmed it. Aizawa knew Mystery Man was going to attempt the boss without them, and he simply wouldn't have that, he couldn't. He said they would do the boss together and so that was exactly what they were going to do. Before he could catch up to Malavaes however, a notification popped up into his field of view with a textbox which read "UPDATE". Clicking on more info, Aizawa found out that the Weekly Special Quests had finally come back online. The first few quests he scrolled through on the list however were beginning to upset him as he was apparently too high leveled to attempt them. Once he reached the bottom of the list though, that all changed. The last quest on the list's requirements were Level Eight or high, and he happened to fall into that category, a small thin smile spreading across his lips. Apparently there was a new zone under the Town of Elurik specifically created for this week's quest. It was times like this when he was truly amazed by what the game's Seed was capable of. Shaking his head clear of useless thoughts the young Monk decided that he would complete this quest quickly and then proceed to rendezvous with ??? at the Dungeon. He would swipe the Quest Logs away and open his inventory before summoning one of his teleportation crystals from it. Once he had it in his hand he would squeeze and shatter the crystal with his destination in mind, his body instantly being warped to the quest starting zone. With a bit of walking around it didn't take long for him to find this supposed big bad monster to deal with. To be fair though, this thing would probably be a bit more of a challenge for a normal level eight, but he was different. He was a Super Saiyan. Aizawa would blast forward before leaping up into the air, reaching the height required to be right in the thing's face, and with one solid punch to the dome, down went Frazier (the monster). "Ayy lmao." With quest done and new leet item in inventory, he was off to met up with his bud, the wondrous Mystery Man. [exit]

Enter from Town of Elurik

The official wording of the quest was to explore the "City Beneath the Woods," Sakamoto realized as she re-read the quest instruction for about the fifth time over while traipsing through the apparently new area. "Eh, it's close enough!" she ended up rather flippantly ignoring the difference. "City Beneath the Woods" and "City Hidden Amongst the Roots" sounded close enough, which was why she, a seven year old, had the two confused in the first place.

Although, that didn't answer why she kept on looking at the menu. Truth was, while she knew that two more quests existed for this location, since they appeared in her quest log and everything, there wasn't a single bit of information on either of the two higher leveled tasks. Their entries were blank, and Sakamoto was dying to know what she had to do for them. They would reveal their secrets once Sakamoto had reached the required levels. However, the seven year old didn't know that, and even if she did, she couldn't wait. She was too excited to know what they were.

If it wasn't obvious enough for a seven year old's ability to survive while distracted and reading menus, the entire exploration part of the first quest was going smoothly. It was really quite easy. Maybe it was just because Sakamoto had yet to stray very far from the town, but the underground area had yet to show anything truly threatening. She had spotted a few Corrupted and other fungus monsters, but had successfully run from them all. There was no way Sakamoto was going to willingly deal with mushrooms any more after the horrible five-Corrupted night and the nightmares following the fight.

At about mid-morning, Sakamoto came upon a suspicious looking clearing. Actually, the clearing looked completely normal and harmless. Except, it was the only place where light shined clearly through, light that was not impeded by roots. It was too bright, so it looked too special. Plus, there was even a tree right smack in the middle of the clearing! The tree was just screaming "COME LOOK AT ME!". Not literally, of course, but figuratively. Bottom line was, this was the sort of place that held some kind of event. That was what Sakamoto's rpgamer senses told her.

Intrigued, most of the time the events were good, she crept forwards. Even the ones that were ambushes usually had a benefit for going through all the trouble. She readied herself to turn into an elephant at the slightest hint of danger. Nothing happened. Even when Sakamoto was close enough to touch the tree, nothing happened.

Then she touched the tree.

Nothing happened.

She walked around the tree.

Oh, a grave. Sakamoto very respectfully but also cautiously rounded the grave. Like a good girl, she paid her respects, but all while keeping an eye for a skeleton or some kind of undead. Those things sometimes popped out of graves.

Something happened.

As Sakamoto bowed, a jingle played. It was a happy tune. While not identical to other tunes of its kind, Sakamoto could tell from the tone of the tune what it was. "ITEM GET!" Sakamoto yelled triumphantly as she pumped up a fist while still kneeling. With a sparkle, a hammer appeared in the air. It levitated, rotating and still sparkling in all its item-y glory. After finishing paying her respects to the grave, Sakamoto stood up in order to grab the new item. She could have done it kneeling, really, but she had forgotten how much taller she was in the game than in real life. In real life, she would have need to stand up to reach over and up to the hammer, which was why she stood up.

Either way, upon touching the hammer, the item fell into her hands. It lost its sparkle and levitation, but it was now Sakamoto's, and Sakamoto was incredibly happy.

For the moment, Sakamoto pocketed away the hammer. Right now, she had more important things to look at. Well, maybe not important, but more interesting. Her quest log had just dinged with a notification, and Sakamoto could guess what it was. She opened up the log, practically shaking with anticipation. It was happening. She was finally going to be able to see what one of the mystery entries said.

Except she didn't. Instead, all that was written in the log was that it was suggested that Sakamoto start the next quest. The system had calculated that she had enough exp for the second weekly special and she had already finished the first so why not level? That was basically what the log relayed to Sakamoto. It even had a nice little button for her to press to level up. Of course, Sakamoto pressed the button. The action popped open another series of menus, detailing the spent and unspent experience points she had accumulated as well as her stats.

Judging from the presence of arrows, Sakamoto was supposed to do something with them, so of course she touched them. Up. Down. Up. Down. Sadly, there was no left or right. All the arrows did were to raise and lower stat scores. Although, her stats could never be lower than what they started at. They also couldn't get higher after a certain point. It took some time, but eventually Sakamoto understood. Each point raised took one of the unspent exp and placed it into spent exp. After using enough points, a little message flashed into existence in the window saying that she would level up to a certain level if she confirmed the stat allocation.

Once she had sorted everything else, Sakamoto furiously tapped everything back to the lowest numbers. Then she furiously tapped the HP button. She had been far too close to death in this game once already. She didn't want to have it happen again, and her simple solution to that was to max hp as much as possible. Defense she considered. It was nice not being hit hard in elephant mode when her defense was higher. She experimentally put 30 points into enough, but decided to not. In her short experience, dodging was better. After all, if she was just fully awake, she wouldn't have needed to take any hits. If she could move faster, then she could hit the slow moving monsters even more per dodge. The more she could hit per dodge, the faster they would go down. Genius! Except not really, but no one was there to tell Sakamoto that. Without anyone to stop her, she pushed the life out of the up arrow keys for speed and dexterity. Then after the button-pressing frenzy, she adjusted them so that they came out even with each other and at a number that was nicely divisible by ten. Numbers ending with a zero just seemed so clean and nice to Sakamoto.

Strength she bypassed completely. Mana, too. She could still do damage with low strength, that was good enough for her, and she was still under the delusion that her mage class was the monk class. Monks didn't need mana, pft.

Stamina, though. Monks needed stamina. At least, Sakamoto thought they did. She didn't really know, but it couldn't hurt to put some points into stamina. "Let's make it a nice, even 100," she hummed to herself. This was really quite fun, just adjusting numbers on a screen. It sort of reminded her of the character customization screen, but with less colors and creativity.

And accuracy. Sakamoto dumped a little into accuracy because why not. She had to be sure she was able to hit things, after all. Although, it was clear that she didn't read the little blurb about how accuracy was only important for ranged attacks.

When everything was done, there were 11 points left. Sakamoto pondered long and hard over the 11 points until finally, regretfully, she split it 5-5-1. She put 5 into dex and speed to keep the two stats even. Then the remaining 1 went into health because she didn't want to die. Game overs always made her sad.

All that was left was to confirm, which Sakamoto did. Several rings occurred and a spotlight narrowed down on Sakamoto several times as she leveled from level 1 to level 6. It was a five level skip and her stats changed appropriately. Sakamoto suddenly found herself looking at numbers that were in the 100s. The big numbers greatly pleased her.

What pleased her more, though, was a quest log notification. Closing the stat and experience windows, Sakamoto eagerly opened her quest log. There, in the window, was her long-awaited prize. The description for the second quest was now available now that she had reached level 6, the level requirements for this particular quest being levels 4 to 7.

This second quest was clearly related to the first one. Even Sakamoto could tell. The title looked similar to the previous quest, just a little longer. After slowly figuring out the words in the mission, Sakamoto pieced together that the "The Mystery of the City Beneath the Woods" quest was basically the first one but with more specifics. Instead of just looking around randomly, she had to find some sort of secret.

Sakamoto commenced the tried and true tactic of talking out loud to herself, "Now, if this was a secret, then it can't be near the entrance, huh? I have to go deeper in, farther from the town. Okay! Let's go!" That was it. That was all the planning the seven year old thought she would need. Just go farther from town. Yep. She was going to find the secret with that kind of aimless plan.

But wait! She wasn't done! She remembered something! "Oh yeah!" she smacked a fist down into the palm of the other hand, "I can't be noticed! I have to be super secret. Like a ninja! Or a bank robber! Oh, now I feel bad… Like a ninja! Power Rangers Ninja Force! Fruit Ninja! Yeah!". Pointless ramblings aside--on the plus side, Sakamoto seemed really into it and really not close to remembering that she was alone in a video game without parental supervision--Sakamoto proceeded to change. She was using the same trick as last time, the one where she transformed into an animal. Although, this time, she chose to turn into a small bird instead of a giant elephant. Not just any bird, though. As Sakamoto tweeted, she was a "NINJA BIRD! and off NINJA BIRD went with a flap of her wings, dutifully making a beeline in the direction Sakamoto thought was away from the town.

For many hours and minutes, NINJA BIRD flitted to and fro across trees, settling wherever things looked suspicious. At least, that's what Sakamoto narrated to herself. Really, most of the perches she chose were chosen because she was tired. The farther NINJA BIRD traveled from town, the more frequently it sighted monsters. There were some NINJA BIRD recognized, but they traveled in far larger groups than it had ever seen before. Take, for instance, a horde of ten corrupted. NINJA BIRD shuddered at the horde and quickly left for another perch. Perhaps another day horde of mushroom zombies. It may not be this day, but one day…. ONE DAY. Despite pretending such things, though, Sakamoto really wished she would never see such monsters ever again. There were moving trees, too, and things that looks like many moving trees stuck together. Larger fungi roamed the lands and powerful looking elves would sometimes skirmish with them. The first time Sakamoto saw one of these elf bands, she actually thought they were other players, but closer inspection showed them to be npc monsters, None of the monsters Sakamoto met, however, noticed her. None paid the harmless blue bird a second thought or glance. She remained unnoticed just like the mission had required. Just like a true NINJA BIRD.

NINJA BIRD never faltered, going onwards until it found a suspicious relic. This looked suspicious. Veeeery suspicious. Sakamoto decided that the relic deserved investigation and it was totally not because her wings (or were they arms?) were starting to feel tired. Still chirping like a bird, Sakamoto announced, "NINJA BIRD DESCENDS TO INVESTIGATE."

NINJA BIRD landed on the relic of times long past, immersing herself completely in the game and forgetting that the relic couldn't have been made more than a few years ago, when the game was first released or that there was a good chance that it had spawned even just a few days ago solely because of these event quests. NINJA BIRD pecked inquisitively at the relic, stepping back and forth across it.

This relic, like the grave and tree from before, was in a rare clearing in this dungeon-like environment beneath the forest. Orange light streamed in through the branches. The sun had already begun to set and long shadows covered more than half of the clearing. There were other stone monuments surrounding the relic. Although, the relic Sakamoto stood on had the fanciest looking design, which was what had attracted her in the first place. Not a sound was to be heard, and if Sakamoto bothered to think hard enough, she would remember that she hadn't seen a monster anywhere near the clearing on her flight to here. Of course, though, as a seven year old, she didn't pick up on that.

Nope, the seven year old just recklessly wandered around the relic, not realizing that with each moment she spent in the area, a looming threat was slowly approaching her. She was just on the cusp of the power level needed to attract the third quest.

After half a minute observing the relic, the quest log dinged that Sakamoto had completed her quest. Finding that she couldn't open her menu as NINJA BIRD, Sakamoto dispelled NINJA BIRD and resumed her default form. She opened her menu, completed the quest, and as she waited for the reward to pop up, quickly distributed her stats as she pleased. Her experience hit the requirements for level 8 and the third mission activated in response.

Sakamoto opened the menu for the third mission and began the painstakingly slow process of reading what the mission had to say. She had just managed to read that she was supposed to kill something for this quest when heavy breathing interrupted her thoughts. Glancing to the side, Sakamoto saw a large, elephant-sized rhino emerging from a portal that had opened between two, old pillars. "Awawawawawawawa," Sakamoto whined as her hands fumbled to get ready. She closed menus, reopened a few on accident, and then closed them again. Her gamer senses told her that this was what she needed to kill, the question was how. The rhino was clearly not normal, as if it's size didn't already give that away. It's back was covered in armadillo-like hide and it had a single horn made out of what appeared to be a very sharp, curved blade.

After slowly freeing itself from the portal, as if something on the other side was trying to drag it back in, the rhino monster huffed and stomped in preparation for a charge. The portal behind it slowly dimmed before disappearing altogether. Just in time, Sakamoto grabbed the shiny new axe that was her prize for completing the second mission in the three-quest arc and dodged way out of the charging rhino's way. With an acrobatic tumble she didn't know that she could do, no doubt because of all the points she put into dexterity, Sakamoto was back in a standing ready position and facing the rhino before the monster even recovered from his own charge. "Devil's Executor," Sakamoto slowly sounded out the name floating above the rhino. It was a hard to pronounce name, but it's hit points were nothing to sneeze at either, and if the three strikes Sakamoto managed to land while dodging the rhino's attacks as she slowly read everything about it were any examples, its defense was far above her attack. Looks like this was going to be another contest of endurance.

In the heat of battle, time seemed to move even faster. The enclosed spaces that the branches provided lengthened the shadows, speeding up the process that night fell in this underground arena. Before the sun had fully set, Sakamoto and the Devil's Executor were already fighting in night-like conditions. In the City Beneath the Woods, night had already fallen, but up on the surface, the sky was still tinted in vibrant oranges and reds. Clouds drifted by lazily, unconcerned with the heated battle taking place amongst the roots beneath them.

Dodge. Hit a few times while the rhino was picking itself from a charge. Dodge again. This was just like the fight against the Corrupted. Except the Devil's Executor dealt a good chunk of Sakamoto's health points, even after she had put so many points into it, whenever it landed a hit on her, which it managed to do a few times while Sakamoto was still getting a feel for the monster's attack patterns. She could feel each hit even after the initial strike, too. There was a burning sensation that sapped her hp for a few seconds. Then there was the bleeding that sapped less hp over time than the burn but for a much longer length of time. Charges weren't the only thing it could do. Sakamoto had yet to get hit by a charge. Instead, what had it her were its other attacks. It could swing its head from sided to and stomp for attacks that had less after lag. Even those strikes, however, came slowly. This rhino's stats were something ridiculous in certain areas, but it was beatable. Sakamoto just had to keep chipping away at it.

The sun completely set, cloaking even the skies above in darkness. Down beneath the trees, it was almost complete darkness. If the rhino didn't glow with a nasty aura, Sakamoto wouldn't have been able to see anything at all. However, for whatever reason, probably for intimidation, the Devil's Executor's skin glowed. Its eyes glowed. Its horn was the glow-iest of them all. That meant Sakamoto could still fight, and she was doing just that. The memories of the Corrupted fight two nights ago still haunted Sakamoto, but whenever they resurfaced, the girl took them only as motivation to fighter faster. Still believing that she was a monk, Sakamoto continued to use just her fists to deal damage.

Still, the fight was taking too long, and eventually, Sakamoto was just done with it. She was going to speed things up for better or for worse. Jumping back to give herself enough distance, she began her transfiguration. The rhino used the opening to charge, but upon contact, it no longer found a mere man. Instead, its charge was met head-on by an elephant of equal size. Blade went against tusk and the two battled it out until with a thunderous roar, the elephant tossed the blade away and charged into the exposed side of the Devil's Executor.

The battle raged on for many minutes between the two giants until finally, with one last, tired smack of the trunk, Sakamoto finally felled the Devil's Executor. The fight, which had lasted until the middle of the night, had exhausted her. However, she couldn't complain about much else. It was an exhilarating battle, she had to admit even when she was as tired as she was. What was more, this time around, she didn't attract fifty other, that was an exaggeration, enemies. Sakamoto dispelled her transformation, and the rhino, having been defeated, dispersed into the generic cloud of dust, save for his horn. The horn remained, but it was now attached to a slender staff instead of a giant rhino body. The scythe floated up and sparkled like the other quest items, and Sakamoto took it into her hands. "Reaper's Scythe," she read slowly before pocketing it into her bag with the other two weapons. She would deal with the weapon later. For now, it was bedtime, and after bedtime, she would transform into a bird again to return to the town.
