“You want an answer?” There was a metallic click from the safety catch.

“You're dead wrong.”

Kursha whirled. The stock of the rifle was on his shoulder. He fired as soon as he turned, and the sound of gunfire cut through the stadium.

He actually shot her. He actually shot her.

Rasali yelped in surprise as the shot grazed her upper arm. It was obviously only a warning shot, what with Kursha's freaky super-eyes and only being a few feet away. He could have blown her brains out if he wanted. Kursha had something to prove, though. He wanted Rasali alive for the time being, and she wasn't about to let such an opportunity slide.

Wasting no time, Rasali jumped back from the railing and vaulted over the stadium seating. She'd left her bag tucked under her chair, and in her bag, her weapon.

Rasali had dreamed of fighting in the coliseum, but this wasn't the way she'd imagined it playing out.

As Rasali sprinted back into the audience, Kursha found his good mood returning. Sort of. He had only grazed her, but that was enough. There was no way she was just going to let that pass. Giving the rifle a twirl, he sauntered a short ways after Rasali. The remaining audience members between them parted in a rush.

“What do you say, Razz?” he called, loud enough to be heard over the sounds of the crowd. “How about you and me play a little? Have some fun! Then we'll see who the coward is.” Honestly her remark had maybe cut a little too deep. Clenching his teeth in a tense grin, he continued after her.

“Better hurry up though. My trigger finger's starting to itch and I would hate if I accidentally shot you in the back!” There was another crack of gunfire. The shot went wide. “Sorry! My bad! I didn't hit you, did I?”

Rasali did her best to weave a serpentine path up the seats until she reached her own. She didn’t know what she would have done if she hadn’t spotted her worn sling bag tucked beneath one of the hundreds of identical plastic seats. Ducking down, Rasali grabbed her chain. Carrying around the heavy thing was turning out to be a much better decision than she’d believed when she’d left her hive that evening. Blessedly it slid out of the bag without tangles.

Kursha was still shouting and Rasali didn’t expect these chairs to provide much defense against a gunshot. She rolled down the aisle as just like that, a shot fired. Picking herself up, Rasali tore out from below the chairs and took a flying leap down the stairs towards Kursha. She had to close the distance between them or she’d be dead in the water.

Her strike missed by a long-shot. Rasali’s detour to collect her weapon had given Kursha plenty of time to reposition himself. Still, the momentum from her drop coupled with her wide, vertical swing produced a heavy divot in the concrete landing. Cracks spidered out beneath Rasali as she slid into a standing position.

Rasali’s chest hurt from how heavily her heart was hammering, but she paid the sensation no mind. If anything it was just more encouragement to shut Kursha the hell up. She needed to find the quickest route to where he was standing and run.

Finally Rasali had her thinkpan in the game. About damn time. He was getting bored waiting around. As she barrelled out from behind the row of chairs, Kursha stopped twirling his rifle. He raised it to his shoulder, prepared to take aim, when Rasali sprang off the steps. Instinctively, he moved. That turned out to be a good decision.

Where the weighted end of her weapon fell, there was a shallow depression in the concrete. For the briefest moment, Kursha hesitated. He had seen first-hand the damage Rasali had caused back in the Phoenix Initiative. If he took a blow like that then...

Well. That was "if". Kursha had no intention of letting that happen. He was virtually untouchable.

Escaping up through the stadium seating, he took a potshot back at Rasali.

“You really gotta work on your aim!” Kursha jeered, as he bounded over a chair. “Ask nicely and I might just give you a few pointers!”

Rasali gasped as she was hit with another shot while looking for Kursha in the sparse (and rapidly thinning) crowd. A considerable gouge was left in her off arm. ”No matter,” Rasali reasoned. It was nothing in the long run. The only blows that mattered in her opinion were the fatal ones.

Rasali was locked onto Kursha. She wasn’t about to let him keep the high ground and took off after him. The effect of Rasali’s skating on her grace was debatable, but there was no doubt it had mad her legs strong. She bound up the stairs, rapidly covering the ground between herself and Kursha until she was directly before him. Propelling herself over the back of the lower row of seats, Rasali took a wicked swing. Her coiled chain unfurled mid-air, closing the final gap between herself and Kursha.

Kursha had not made one error but two. First he misjudged Rasali's agility, and second he had underestimated the reach of her chain. Together they nearly cost him.

Rasali's attack had come sooner than he expected. Much closer too. The chain lunged towards him like a striking snake. In the half second that he had to process the attack, Kursha realised that she was just within range. Wielding his rifle like a staff, he swung it sideways to intercept the attack. There was a sharp clang as it struck the chain. Then, in almost the same moment he felt the force of Rasali's attack land in his shoulder. He grit his teeth. Fortunately, his weapon had diverted most of its power. It would leave nothing more than a bruise.

Kursha spat. “Tch. C'mon Razz!” He clicked the safety back in place. It was time to switch tactics. Rasali wanted to play up close and personal, so he would oblige. Gripping the end of the barrel, he crossed the remaining distance between them. Then he swung the rifle in a wide arc. The stock came flying up towards Rasali's chin.

“It's not as much fun if you don't even try!” Bonus points if he could knock out a few teeth.

In her haste to avoid the swipe to her face, Rasali lost her footing on the seat she’d been standing on. Her shout was silenced as her back made contact with the next row of seats. She folded onto the floor between the rows of seats, whimpering. The blow had knocked a few tears free from her eyes, which seemed to aggravate Rasali enough into pulling herself from the concrete, albeit shakily.

”This could be good…” Rasali tried to focus on the positive, or anything other than her throbbing spine. ”He’s getting… cocky.”

Understatement. However, Rasali wasn’t going to worry about semantics when Kursha had basically thrown himself to her.

Kursha was standing almost directly above her, holding his rifle at an awkward angle. (He was probably gloating too. Rasali wasn’t paying attention, but she was willing to bet beetles on it if his mouth was moving.) Rasali positioned her legs underneath her and sprang up from the floor, unarmed. She was trying to grab hold of Kursha.

”Well in that case, I guess I’d better start!” Rasali whispered into Kursha’s ear.

…And suplex him into the next row of seats.

As Rasali crashed over the seats, Kursha burst out into laughter at the spectacle. He could not help it. The results of her pathetic attempt to dodge were hilarious. He found them so amusing he was almost tempted to forgive her. Almost... but not quite. He had a message to drive home. For the moment though, he was going to enjoy every second of this.

That turned out to be not very much longer.

His laughter came to an abrupt halt when Rasali took hold of him. As she whispered into his ear, his eyes went wide. What the...? Then his feet left the ground. He never completed the thought.

A second later and he found himself sprawled across the seats, the breath knocked out of him and every inch of him throbbing with pain. His rifle clattered to the ground beside him.

“Ugh...” Kursha groaned. His head was spinning from the blow. A part of his brain realised that he needed to move, but it hurt too much to even consider. His neck in particular was killing him.

Fine. If he could not move, then he would have to bring Rasali to his level. As the stars faded from his sight, he grabbed hold of his rifle. He hooked his legs over the back of the back of the seat. Forcing himself into a sit up, he pulled the safety once more, and took aim. Fortunately Rasali was well within his sights. He pointed the muzzle of the weapon at her shoulder. No more game changing feats of strength from you, Razzmatazz.

There was the crack of gunfire.

Rasali’s bruised back screamed in pain. Kursha’s entire body weight pushed down on her stretched torso as she rolled him into the stands below them. For as much pain as she was feeling, if the two of them survived this encounter, she was never going to let Kursha live that one down.

Unfortunately Rasali had to put any thoughts of celebrating on the backburner. Kursha was still conscious and Rasali wasn’t about to leave her back turned to him.

A moment’s hesitation would have shattered Rasali’s shoulder. Rasali turned to find the end of Kursha’s rifle not even a foot away from her. She would be lucky to still have an arm if Kursha got his shot off.

Rasali acted on perhaps the biggest split-second gamble of her life and threw herself at the gun. She grabbed it by the barrel and wrenched up. The gun went off with a deafening crack. Beneath the throbbing of her ear, Rasali could feel the slight burn of residual gunpowder on her skin. Her arms were rattling, and a chunk of her hair was gone.

Rasali was surprised she felt more offended than afraid in that moment. She certainly would have been singing a different tune if Kursha had hit his mark. Still, Rasali wasn’t about to question any train of thought that assisted her in punishing Kursha Vidari within an inch of his life.

’If he’s such a big fan of payback, let’s see how he likes THIS!’

Rasali pulled on the gun, and more importantly, Kursha. Bringing herself in range, Rasali drew back her other fist and punched Kursha in the ear.

Just as Kursha's finger squeezed around the trigger, Rasali moved. She wrenched the gun upwards and his shot fired harmlessly into the stadium walls. Then, before he could retaliate, she gave a yank on the barrel of rifle, pulling Kursha towards her. In nearly the same instant, her fist collided with the side of his head.

His vision exploded in white and his ears were ringing. For a moment, Kursha was too dazed to think. As his dizziness faded though, he felt the beginnings of panic overtake him. He had underestimated Rasali's ability in melee. Never having been on the receiving end of it before, and what with her mild nature, he had waved her off as non-threatening. Clearly that had been a mistake. He was fast losing control of this fight.

Kursha gritted his teeth. No, no, no, no. Not again. This could not be happening again. Not to him.

Tightening his grip on the firearm, Kursha pulled it roughly out of Rasali's grasp. At the same time, he forced himself to stand. His right foot slipped behind him. He could not afford to be prone. Half crouching, he raised his rifle as though to shoot.

Then, he turned and fled.

Leaping over the stadium seats, Kursha tried to put as much distance between him and Rasali as possible. He paused only to fire off a couple of haphazard shots at Rasali. As he did, his vision began to blur. His sight was going. Kursha exhaled with a curse. Not this too. Not on top of everything else.

Rasali could feel a ringing sensation in her knuckles. Despite being painful, it brought her some measure of satisfaction. She was made for brawling and both she and Kursha knew it. If a snowball could rain down this much of Kursha’s ire, Rasali was a little afraid to know what this would result in. Still, adrenaline, survival instincts, and no small amount of righteous fury pushed Rasali’s consideration for the consequences of her actions off to the side. Far off to the side.

Kursha had managed to slither out of her grip and take off down the aisle. A shot fired before she’d even registered he’d gotten away, grazing the edge of Rasali’s cheek. Warmth oozed down her jaw. It was any wonder she hadn’t lost a horn yet in this battle.

Rasali dropped low to pick up her chain and avoid the spattering of bullets directed at her. Running while ducking behind the seatbacks was awkward as hell, but at least provided some measure of protection against Kursha’s fire. Damn guns. As much as they unsettled her echoing from the forest behind her hive, they were much worse in person.

Rasali caught up to Kursha, or at least got him within the very limits of her weapon’s range. Knocking Kursha unconscious would solve a lot of Rasali’s current problems, but bashing in his weapon or even his hands wouldn’t hurt (Rasali) in the slightest.

A hiss escaped out from between his teeth as Rasali's chain crashed into his back. The blow made him stumble, but he was soon back on his fight and running. Taking two steps at a time, sometimes three, Kursha advanced up the rake. He fired once more back at Rasali, but a click told him he had exhausted his ammunition. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out a handful of cartridges. As he ran, he plugged them into the revolving cylinder. More focussed on what his feet were doing than his hands though, he dropped a few down the steps.

s**t, s**t, s**t, s**t!

By the time he had reached the top, he had finished reloading. He slipped behind the back row of seats and increased his pace. If he could just pull ahead of Rasali a little more...! At last he slid to a stop, and ducked down. While the chairs would not give him much cover, he would take what he could get.

Propping his gun over the back of one seat, Kursha took aim. At this point he worried less about disabling Rasali's arms, and more about doing as much damage as he could. So, he took focussed on her core. He was not picky about where he it. A lung, a rib, her liver... anything that would hurt like hell and slow her down.

He fired. Not once but twice. The recoil sent his second shot wide though. Hissing with disdain, he jumped back into action. He had no intention of letting Rasali engage him close up if he could help it.

Damn. In Rasali’s haste to end the fight, she wasn’t close enough to land a decisive hit. Ironically the fight was dragging out even longer. If Rasali’s lungs weren’t burning she’d have groaned in disappointment. To make matters worse, Kursha was headed straight up the stairs. Rasali took a deep breath and followed suit.

Bullets bounced down the stairs past Rasali as she ran. Her eyes lit up and she quickened her pace at the sight. Kursha was reloading. If she could catch up to him before he finished she had a real chance to disarm him. Her legs shivered and her bones ached. Rasali wound her chain around her arm, preparing to release it once more.

Unfortunately Kursha beat her to his position only seconds before she arrived. She whirled her chain back and Kursha pulled the trigger. With a wet pop that barely registered over the crack of the gun, a hole was punched in Rasali’s side. Somewhere between a clean miss and a shot to the kidney Rasali was bleeding both front and back. The bullet had sailed clean through.

Rasali stumbled away from Kursha, but managed to keep her footing. She was too surprised to register the pain quite yet. It was hard to see on Rasali’s dark outer shirt, but she could faintly register the fabric becoming thick and damp. She looked down at her torso incredulously.

Rasali heard Kursha getting up and urgency flooded back to her. She snapped her head up and struck out with her chain, aiming for Kursha’s legs. She wasn’t about to let Kursha pull that s**t again.

If… If she could… Help… It……
