The sun had just set over the jagged skyline of New Hemisect City, swallowing the stretching buildings in a rich magenta befitting a seadweller. It was a crystal clear night, and as the sky darkened, dozens upon dozens of stars began to fade into view; joined by the many twinkling windows of communal hivestems as the occupants stirred from their slumber. The crisp dusk air was refreshing even in the stifling metropolis, almost welcoming to early risers. Before long, trolls began to flit onto the city streets, and the bustle of the city began to return at a steady crawl.

On one particular street in a not-so-nice area of the city, a small crowd had collected, seemingly enthralled by some sort of street performance. There were intermittent gasps and delighted applause, with the occasional charmed samaritan stepping outside the semi circle to toss some beetles into the entertainer's collections. A few enchanted members of the audience clapped along with the dancer, keeping a steady beat to match his fluid movements. The name of this captivating creature? Zindel Tagino.

With each note his cante's voice hit, each sound his toque played, Zindel couldn't help but revel in the greatness that was the art of dance. It was enthralling to be apart of a group, if only a temporary one. The more they sung and played the guitar, the more Zindel could express himself with his actions, convey each thought he felt about it in turns, twirls, twists, and long jumps.

Even Dance Battles had helped him improve, even though he disliked them— They were definitely not his cup of faygo, but they gave him beetles. They gave him, well, fancier clothes. Shoes. And it felt... Almost good. Though at the same time, Zindel felt like he may have been getting a little too much unwanted attention from them. He was starting to become suspicious of those that stopped to watch him as he danced, and found craftier ways to disappear into the shadows.

Pulling his mind away from those thoughts, the redblood focused completely on his dancing, expression relaxed and almost in his element, knowing what to do as he knew this song by heart. As he clapped with the crowd and the song neared its end, one last thought came over him and his eyes grew excited, arms twisting as his body arched for the final pose, giving a perfect and synchronized jump and throwing his head back on the last note. A proud grin was on his face, and Zindel didn't feel scared this time— He enjoyed the attention, the clapping and excited whoops from the crowd fueling him. Breathing heavily as he joined his friends and gave the crowd a bow, he almost looked like he was smiling.

As the song's last note echoed down the narrow streets, the audience burst out into a small roar of applause. There were a few polite whistles, and more trolls stepping forward to toss some shiny beetles into the steadily growing pile. Tonight had been a whopping success for the small band of performers, given how early it was; but their audience soon dispersed as everyone was forced to return to their everyday lives and nightly obligations.

Still, a few trolls stayed, pleading with wide eyes for an encore. Crowding around the band, they fawned over the group, oozing praise and each proclaiming themselves the group's totally newest, number one fan. More beetles were dropped into the ever growing pot.

Off to the side two lowblooded children lingered sheepishly near a lamp post, watching from a distance. They couldn't have been more than a few sweeps old- but only only a lone lusus accompanied them, a small white primatebeast, wrapped around one of the troll's shoulders. They were both visibly covered in a layer of grime, and seemed to be almost glued to one another by their sticky little hands. The orangeblooded boy clutched a woven basket full of weeds that could have passed as flowers to an unsuspecting city troll, some woven into crude necklaces and bracelets that the pair had been attempting to peddle. Small looks of wonderment were painted across their dirty faces as they gazed at Zindel's troupe from afar, murmuring quietly to one another.

The two shyly approached the performers, both sets of lookstubs locked on the ground as they navigated the fantrolls. The taller girl reached into the basket, grabbing a fistful of weed-flowers before tossing them at Zindel's feet in a display of affection. The two had no beetles to offer. They flushed red and orange respectively, before scuttling off back to the safety of the lamp post to admire from afar.

Now only was Zindel having fun while he danced, the redblood quite literally felt good. When the trolls stayed for an encore, the redblood shook his head a little before offering them a later time they'd be around to perform. His last encore consisted of a blueblood threatening his life to preform in dance battles, and Zindel wasn't about to risk it. No matter how many beetles he received, it wouldn't make up for the intense fear he now felt toward bluebloods in particular.

Tossing the fans a particularly dashing smile, he waved them away before noticing two trolls from afar, watching them slowly come closer. He had never seen them before— a redblood and an orangeblood, covered in a light layer of dust and whatever they picked up off the streets. Zin's pump biscuit wrenched as he watched them come nearer, expression falling while they approached them. Weedflowers— in a basket? He watched them carefully, swallowing as they threw their only source of income to Zindel's feet and rushed away, back to safety. Though he was initially suspicious of them, the redblood was impacted by their display of affection and crouched down, taking the most intact flower necklace he could find and draping it around his neck. He also took another necklace, smaller one this time, and placed it on his head— A flower crown.

Looking toward his group, whom were watching him curiously, the redblood looked at the beetles before getting an idea and standing up, approaching them with it. Getting incredulous stares from them and a lot of debate, Zin stayed resolute, knowing he could make it without the spare money and could earn it from... Dance battles. If he won. He gave them a pleading frown before finally getting their approval, shuffling over toward the pot and taking out his own bag of beetles taking more than a quarter of them and tossing them in the bag. Zindel stood up and shuffled over toward the lamppost.

"Hey there. Thank you," He spoke softly and tilted his head, referring to the flower crown on it. He gave them an earnest half smile, offering them the beetles with an open palm. Not only was he giving them what he had left in his wallet, he gave them most of his winnings from the morning, and seemed almost eager to do so. He didn't actually need them, he was mostly fine, and he'd been getting better at stealing. He was alright. They seemed to need it more than he did.

Deeply absorbed in their whispered conversation about how they should have chosen weeds that complimented the dancer's colour, the children hadn't noticed Zindel beginning move towards them. Pointing, the primatebeast lusus let out a low screech of warning from his perch atop the redblood's shoulders before slapping his tail wildly against her back. The two whipped to attention, eyes wide, clutching even tighter to one another as they shrunk under his presence.

For a moment, they stood there silently gaping up at Zindel. Their awestruck expressions fell into ones of disbelief when he held out his hand, small faces scrunching as they both tried to register what he was offering. Growling quietly, the lusus bristled and pressed against the girl's cheek as she stalled. "U-uhmn..." Undeterred, unlike his companion, the smaller boy brightened again before reaching up to meet Zindel's hand. The redblood gently slapped it away.

"T-thank you, b-b-ut," the older girl stammered, patting her trembling lusus on the head. The orangeblood scowled up at her sourly through the corners of his eyes, nursing his hand. "The f-flowers were a... a... whassa word... a token, yeah, we c-couldn't take your earnins'." Shaking her head, she shuffled uncomfortably upon glancing down at her friend. The fistful of beetles was more than they had seen in weeks, and the weeds were pretty much garbage.

"B-besides they're not worth tha-"

"But I'm hungry, Neecha!" Interrupting, the boy tugged at her arm, mouth twisted into a sour pout. His urgency rose into a whine. "Why can't weeee?" The lusus angrily chittered under her hair.

"I-it's just--" Tripping over her words, Neecha swallowed hard, head bobbing as she looked between her friend and Zindel, at a loss of what to do.

The lusi's screech made the redblood flinch and step back slightly, gulping a little in fear of it attacking him. Though he walked a little closer when it called down— Zindel was adamant about giving them the beetles. Watching the orangeblooded kid reach and the redblood slap his hand away, the redblood blinked, obviously startled. Usually those he offered to took the money without complaint and ran. This was... New. It showed him she was actually a humble troll. Her actions actually increased his desire to give it to them.

As she pet her lusus and stuttered out a response, Zindel rubbed his neck and slowly came closer, stoping should the lusus become rowdy. "I assist." Wait, that didn't sound right. Zin backtracked. "Er, insist. I think. Whatever. I mean I don't mind. I'm not giving it to you for these." He said, touching the crown softly before adjusting it. "It's thanks. For, uh, being my fans." He touched the crown softly, still holding the money outstretched in his hand, hoping they'd take it. "The flowers mean a lot to me. Maybe with this you can start a flower shop." He whispered, giving her a radiant smile and, wary of her lusus, pressed it on her hand. With shifty eyes he looked around before getting closer and whispering some advice to them.

"Lots of highbloods leave their hives early in the night and come back before daybreak," He murmured, "It's not hard getting in when they're not around. Some even leave the door open." His voice was low, not wanting to be heard by others. "Take that however you'd like. But be careful. Some leave their lusi. Run when you can't handle it." Adjusting his now fancy vest, Zindel he stood up straighter. "There's no shame in running if it's for your life." He desperately wished he could help them, but life on the streets wasn't ideal for one, let alone three. Giving them the beetles was all he could do.

The two children giggled at Zindels verbal slip. Neecha raised a dirt-smudged hand to try and cover her crooked smile, but the orangeblood wasn't half as tactful. Still, it wasn't laughter tainted with malicious intent; seeing their seemingly-graceful idol awkwardly stumble with his words was relatable, and it seemed to ease some of their jittery nerves.

"W-well..." Neecha's dark ringed eyes shiftily darted from Zindel's offering, up to his radiant face, and then back down at the beetles. She scrunched her nose contemplatively. The orangeblood gave her arm another squeeze, continuing to make a faint whining noise in the back of his throat.

"Okayyy," she finally submitted, but there was a long drawl of hesitation. Her lusus' distraught chittering rose, eliciting a slight pat from their charge. "But one day, w-we'll pay you back." Neecha first glanced down at her lusus, who had since fallen silent and pressed against her cheek to inwardly sulk, then at her friend, although her expression clearly left little room for debate.

"YEAH!" The orangeblood, who had been biting down on his lower lip eagerly, could no longer contain his outburst. "Like a inpestment!" Bouncing on the balls of his feet, he practically radiated glee at the promise of a hot meal that night. "Y-you mean an investment," Neecha corrected. "But yeah, t-think of it like one 'o those." Gingerly taking Zindel's earnings into her tiny, cupped hands, Neecha tucked them away into her pockets before looking back up at the dancer quizzically. "T-thanks?" It was unclear if she was thanking him for the beetles, or his whispered words of advice. The primatebeast arched their back and gave Zindel a low, sputtering growl in warning.

"Oh, don't worry! We're real good at runnin' away." The orangeblood chirped up and interrupted his friend's lusus, bending over to scoop up a stray beetle off the street. Neecha shuffled uncomfortably. "But are you tellin' us to stea-"

"Shhhh, Toutou." Neecha reached out to grab his hand, giving him a stern yank. "Of course not. He's giving us t-tips on when we should be out trying to sell stuff," And yet, the knowing look the redblood returned to Zindel spoke she understood otherwise. Toutou himself was easily placified, alternating between staring adoringly up at Zindel and down at the beetle he still clutched. "Thanks again, m-mister! We'll find you again when we have the cash, promise."

"MMMhm! Double barkbeast promise."

Hand in hand once more, the lowblooded children each gave Zindel a genuine, toothy grin and darted back into the grimy alleyways they had appeared from, buzzing with earnest conversation about their meal before bedtime that night.

A slight flush of red slid to his cheeks when the younger trolls giggled at him, a stubborn glance to the side hiding half of it. He rubbed his nose slightly, feeling a little embarrassed at the mistake but staying rigid, hand not faltering at all. The whine coming from the orangeblood made the redblood chuckle slightly, a husky sound compared to the higher pitched voices of the other two. When she finally accepted, the redblood's smile grew slightly wider before falling back into its normal, neutral frown. "It's okay," He murmured, adjusting his hip-sash slightly before stretching and cracking his back after a stretch. "You guys don't need to pay me back." I can take care of myself. He didn't need anyone, really. It was always others that brought him down, Zindel realized this now.

The mispronounced investment actually made him chuckle again, a small crack of a smile spreading across his face. The redblood pulled back at the younger redblood's lusus getting a little annoyed at his proximity, hands pulling back to his sides. At Toutou's words, Zindel's head whipped toward them, eyes wide-- before relaxing when Neecha interrupted him. He nodded at her words and gave her a look of knowing only she would understand, hands grasping at his vest and adjusting it a little more. "Like I said, it's alright..." He trailed off when they smiled, taken aback by the sincerity, a warm feeling spreading through his body. He forgot what he was going to say, raising a hand in goodbye and turning around, the sound of their animated voices echoing in his sponge clots.

Aside from the encounter with the lowblooded children, the rest of the evening remained quite uneventful and fairly routine for Zindel. The twin moons had peaked over the skyscrapers of New Hemisect, then dipped behind their stark silhouettes as it always had; plummeting the city into a peaceful, deep navy. Likewise, the troupe of artists Zindel performed with were scheduled to gather a second time that night, as they usually did when Zin's presence wasn't demanded elsewhere at his dance battles. Business had been booming earlier in the evening, so to speak- hopes were high for another copious haul of beetles. The hours had drawn out into the early morning, with much time to spare before dawn, and only the star of the show was absent in helping prepare for their street side concert.

Hurriedly rushing down the streets back to the established meeting point, Zindel slid his hand into his sash, hand fiddling with the pouch he'd nabbed as he waited. He weighed the pouch in his hand-- Yes, this'd be enough for something to eat. He slowed to a stop, emptying the beetles into his own bag, thankful he didn't feel any sort of pressure or worry on his shoulders like the first time he'd stolen from another troll. It was more of a satisfying feeling now, something he felt proud for doing-- It was almost like his own private achievement, not only to survive, but to measure how good he was. Not that he was any good.

Quickly remembering how late it was getting, Zindel threw the empty teal pouch to the side, hands dropping his own pouch into the small bag hidden in his sash and beginning to speed-walk over to the others. After tonight, he'd have more beetles. Maybe by now it'd be enough to buy a hive with his group. Then again, if that was the case, Chiara would just have him move into her hive. He sighed. I'd rather stay on the streets. Greeting his team with a wave of his hand, Zindel jogged to a stop near them, making small talk with the others as he walked over, feeling a lot more relaxed and confident for some reason. They'd do great, he was sure of it.

"'Ey, Zin!" One of the dancer's band mates called out, returning the jovial wave. He placed the guitar he had been holding gently on a stand, turning to slide over beside Zindel. The other, an orangeblood, smiled and politely nodded in greeting, rubbing at their squawk blister. They hummed in low tones to themselves, warming up their voice. "We were just going to go grab something to drink before we started," the guitar player continued, gaining a nod of approval from their singer. "Can you watch our stuff? Won't be but a few minutes."

After some brief chit-chat the two musicians headed off to the nearest store, questing hydration for their singer's parched throat. Zindel was left to his own devices. Their set up was humble; a small rickety stool for the singer and guitar player to alternate using, treasured instrument propped up beside it. There was no microphone, no fancy sound equipment- just the tools of their trade. The guitarist's nimble fingers and strings, the singer's luring siren voice, and Zindel's graceful dance moves. They didn't need anything else to capture the attention of the public.

"HEY! You!" A voice cut out through the peaceful calm of the cool morning air. A blueblood with a white towel draped over one arm popped out of the stream of passersby, face creased and distorted with anger. He stomped over to close the gap between himself and Zindel, waving his free hand around feverishly above his head as he caterwauled. "You! YOU! I know you! You and your little friends are always taking up room on the corner in front of my legitimate establishment. You know business really suffers when you do that every other damned night?!" He had literally closed the gap between himself and Zindel, shoving an index finger roughly against the redblood's chest. Over and over. "It's all your fault!" He wailed. The restaurant was suffering. Business was sporadic. Poke poke poke. "Some nights you don't show your mangy little faces and it's like, incroyable! It's so peaceful and quiet, even though the restaurant is nearly packed. We're really raking in the beetles! I really hope it stays like this. But then you just show up the next night and ruin just everything. Do you know how much spoiled food I've had to toss because of the likes of you? How many dead 'midnight rushes'?" No no, his business management skills were immaculate. The towel on the blueblood's arm swayed slightly in the breeze, but the air was still.

The blueblood grabbed Zindel by the neck of his shirt, giving him a threatening shake. "I think you owe me some compensation."

"Yeah, it's no problem," Zin stated to the others, watching as the walked away and offering them a very slight wave of goodbye, flexing his ankle slightly while stretching his back muscles. In the middle of a waist stretch, the redblood was suddenly startled by a loud yell of frustration... In his direction. Searching wildly for the yeller, he found a blueblooded troll fuming in anger and frustration walking toward him, loud wails of anger and annoyance clearly apparent on the others face. Zindel was too shellshocked to say anything-- He merely watched him, mouth opening and closing a few times before closing completely and watching the other's finger practically stab his chest, inching away with each time the blueblood did so. He swallowed, adjusting his vest slightly, hands starting to get sweaty, every accusation making him more and more nervous. Why was he calling him out like this? Maybe he could get away somehow, since his hands were just poking--

Oh, nope. It seemed as soon as he thought that, the higherblood grabbed his upper shirt. After a hard shake and hearing his preposterous words, Zindel couldn't help but laugh nervously. It took him a moment before he swallowed and released a deep breath. "Co-compensation...?" He repeated, this time as a weak question. "But I... I don't have anything." His words would fall upon deaf ears, but he'd keep on pleading, that was for sure. "I'm... I'm just a poor lowblood... All I earn is to buy some food. To eat. I don't even have a home!" He pleaded, tone sounding more like begging than whining. "I th-thought an amazing businessman such as yourself would have... other ways of getting money." Instead of taking it from trolls like me. It was implied, but not explicitly said, and that, he hoped, wouldn't be a problem. His eyes darted from the others face to the hand grabbing his collar, mouth pressed into a thin line, body pulling away from the others hand. He really didn't want anything to ******** this up. This spot was pretty good, especially on getting new watchers...

"You think this is funny?!" He was blue in the face now, showering a fine mist of spit onto Zindel's face as he continued his enraged shrieking. "Don't give me that! DON'T! GIVE! ME! THAT!" Zindel was shook by the collar upon each syllable for punctuation. "Noooo, monsieur! No no! Not tonight! How gullible do you think I am? Did you not just hear me?! We're packed every night until your mangy little troupe comes around and blocks the doorway, distracting potential diners. WE HAVE FULL LENGTH WINDOWS," releasing Zindel with one hand, he waved wildly towards his restaurant. "I'VE SEEN IT. I'VE SEEN YOU. I've seen how much of an audience you draw in- basically enough to fill my usually-packed dining hall. Don't have anything- BAH!"

By now, more than a few curious onlookers had stopped to watch, murmuring among themselves.

"Do you even have a permit?! This is a busy street! You can't just go clogging it up with your... your... your riffraffian noise!" The blueblood's squawking had reached maximum volume by this point. He was quivering with rage, beads of sweat forming on his brow. "It's not just about money. It's... i-it's the principal of it all!!! Obstruction of business! SABOTAGERY!"

Lowering his voice, the troll drew Zindel in closer, voice dropping into a dangerous hiss. "You're going to give me all of your earnings from tonight, you hear? All of them." A flash twinkled in the blueblood's frenzied eyes. "Make that for the rest of this week. Or else. Do we have an understanding?"

"N-No!" Zindel stuttered in response, wrinkling his nose in disgust as the spit of the blueblood spread all over his face, pump biscuit pounding with every shake, scream, or stop in his words. The more he spoke, the more he trembled, searching for a chance to speak, to plead, to beg-- "I-It's not just us, Sir, I--" He looked around, nervous, looking to the slowly growing crowd around them and pursing his lips-- "W-we're a big group, a community of many poor and helpess, and we're-- We're just trying to stay alive! We don't have anything but what we get day by day...!" His eyes visibly saddened, even though he was mostly just playing up his emotions at this point. Normal Zindel wouldn't have even batted an eye at his woes, but this was in defense of his comrades, and they needed the money, any amount was alright...

"It's not just about money. It's... i-it's the principal of it all!!! Obstruction of business! SABOTAGERY!"

Basically, his pride. Zindel would've sneered if he wasn't acting at the moment-- Highbloods and their fragile, breakable pride. The moment a lowblood steps on their ground is when they get violent, aggressive, demanding... defensive. He wished he could narrow his eyes, wished he could stand up for himself, but he had no power or title. If he spoke now, he'd die, nothing other than a smear of blood on the street. Not that he minded-- he'd accepted his fate and future ages ago. He just...

If he died, what happened to the main source of income of his group?

His demands were absurd. All week? "I-I-I--" They had many sick, they needed the money, and what they earned was still not enough for everyone equally. He was sweating, nervous, breathing heavily. If he accepted, he could've just run away afterwards. He could've also just not danced at all. He could hide out, for a while, stay low, break his connections. Not that he had many. He didn't really care about the blueblooded cook's requests. But his voice, his hissing, his radius-- It disgusted him, it made him want to gag, to puke...! "--P-please, please just let go of me!" He exclaimed, his pulse high, panicking. He couldn't accept to that, he really couldn't.

"How dare you turn your sniffnode up at my offer!" The calm wrath that had taken the blueblood was as short lived as his offer to Zindel. Shrieking commenced. "After so graciously trying to work towards compromise with you?! This is why you miscreant lowbloods end up on the streets! No culture whatsoever. I don't care about your problems- just that you're one of mine! I have enough of my own! What, you think I don't have other trolls to pay?" He scrunched up his nose, peering scathingly down at Zindel.

"My patience-- my patience is at it's end!!! I WILL NOT BE PUSHED AROUND BY MANIPULATIVE SCOUNDRELS LIKE YOU A MOMENTS LONGER!!!"

The blueblood released Zindel, giving him a rough push backwards. Throwing out the arm draped with the supposed towel, he let out one final shriek. "ATTACK!"

The sheet of white coiled around the blueblood's arm, bounding off his flattened palm to launch itself at Zindel's face. With a wet slap, the lusus wrapped itself around the lowblood's head, effectively cutting off the majority of his senses- and breathing.

The world went dark for Zindel.
