Marcus sighed heavily and brushed his hair back on his way home, shuffling his backpack that seemed to just get heavier the closer he got to the house. All he could think of what his father and mother could POSSIBLY be doing home alone. Neither one had a job! And as of last year, he had to try and keep track of all their finances. Otherwise they'd be bankrupt and in debt by the end of the week.
The boy groaned and pulled his key out from his jacket pocket and headed into the house, "Mom?" He called out and set his backpack down, "Dad? Are you home? . . . .oh god please be home." He groaned and walked a little further into the house.

A note was left on the table that read, 'Dear Marcus, your father and I have decided to backpack around the world. You are old enough that you can handle the house on your own. Be good and we love you. Mom and Dad~'
A couple minutes later there was banging on the door from the man who owned the house they all stayed in, "You haven't payed rent in six months! I'm evicting you!" He screamed banging on the door.

Marcus felt his blood run cold seeing the note, and he gasped before turning around to look at the door. "Crap!" He hissed and looked over the note before hurrying over towards the door. He was used to the man yelling at them about rent, but he could have sworn the rent had been paid recently. Or at least he had the money to pay it if they where past due.
"M-Mr.Larson, please, I have the money. I-I gave you my account number even! How can we be past due for 6 months?!" He asked and held onto the door, hoping the man wasn't angry enough to wrench the boy out from the doorway, "L-Look, if we haven't paid yet then I'll give you the money right now. Just. . .just give me a bit of time."

The man glared at him. "Your account is empty! I've been telling your parents that for months! Now get your s**t and get out of this house! You have five minutes before I call the police!" He yelled holding out his photo ready to dial the police. When he was out Mr. Larson locked up the house and left to his own home.
In the trees there was a man watching from above. He had been searching long and wide and he might have finally found one. All he had to do was wait and see.

Marcus had done his best to gather whatever belongings were dear to him before he was forced out of the house, then just stood there in a bit of shock. He. . .lost his home. . .his parents are gone and now he he had no money to even find an apartment for himself. He had NOTHING. The man looked down at his box of things and then his backpack stuffed with pillows and a blanket before turning to wander off.
He didn't even know where he was going, but he had to move. If he stood still any longer, he felt like he might break down right then and there. Marcus sighed and hung his head down before heading over to the treeline and setting himself down on the roots, ". . . .what the hell am I going to do now?"

The man slowly came down the tree, "Yes, what will you do Marcus?" The man asked smiling softly, "I have been watching you for some time now. You have a pure heart. You give money to homeless, feed wild animals. Help small trees grow in your school." He moved around him, "What if I told you I can give you the home you desire? A place to belong, free of charge."

Marcus flinched and looked up towards the man quickly, scrambling to stand up on his feet as the man walked around him in what seemed like circles. He would try to ask how he even knew about him, but Marcus figured he probably wouldn't get a straight answer. The boy breathed in and stepped back against the nearest tree before crossing his arms hearing the offer.
". . .w-what. . .what would be the catch? I doubt you'd want to give a home away for absolutely nothing." No one was that generous. Not really. His father used to pretend that way, and he was very good. . .when he was in the car sales business. And most of those cars always had some kind of problem, "w-what would you want in return?"

The man smiled, "You are smart Marcus. Yes there is a catch but a small one. All you would have to do is become the new Land God. I am old and need a successor. I have chosen you." He moved forward and kissed Marcus on the forehead then handed him a paper with directions. "Go here to your new home. Oh and tell Kuzo I'm sorry for being away so long..." He said before he faded away into the sky.
At that time will of the wisps were running around the shrine. They knew that the land god would come back. They also knew there was something odd about the feeling of him.

"L-Land. . .Land god?! Wait!!" He shouted and watched as the man faded away into the clouds. He panted and looked down at the paper in his trembling hands before gulping in a good amount of fear, ". . . o-oh dear god. . ." he whimpered but gathered his belongings and began to head for the address written on his directions. Each step was a little shakier the closer he got to his destination, but Marcus tried to convince himself that this was going to be a home. A place where no land lords would come for him.
He stepped up onto the steps and looked around at the doors before pulling one of them open to peer inside, "H-Hello?" he called into the echoing halls, "i-is anyone here?"

Two wisps appeared and pulled him inside cheering, "The Land God is here! The Land God is here! You are back Mikan....e...? You aren't Mikane...." One flew up and pointed, "But look he holds the mark of the Land God." The other gasped, "Mikane has passed the touch! Oh dear and its a human! What will we do?"
There was a thud and Kuzo walked into the room glaring, "Why do I smell a human and Mikane..." He stopped seeing Marcus, "Your the new Land God? What is this?"

"M-Mark? What mark?" he asked and held onto his forehead for a moment before gasping when Kuzo came into view. All he did was wander into the temple, and now there's confused. . . .spirits? And an angry man who seems just as surprised as he was. The man swallowed his fear and held the piece of paper out, trembling, as he tried to explain himself, "M-My name is Marcus and. . .and some man came up to me, telling me he'd give me a home. Then said I'd be a new land god and . . .and then vanished.
W-What . . .who are you? WHAT are you?" He asked and looked around at the floating wisps at his side before glancing to Kuzo. Something felt off about him, almost dangerous. Marcus backed up against the nearby doors and held onto his backpack for comfort.

Kuzo growled angrily watching the human. One of the spirits came up, "That is Kuzo, he is a wild demon wolf. We are will of the wisps. We are the spirits of this shrine. With you as the new Land God this is your home now." Another one flew over, "Yes! Kuzo has been taking care of it while Mikane was away but... now you are here!"
Kuzo rolled his eyes, "Good... the God is here... I can leave now..." He growled out and started for the doors, "I can finally get away from this hell hole...." One spirit pulled on him, "No! Don't leave Kuzo! Once your magic leaves the shrine will-" He punched it, "Don't touch me! I am leaving!" The other wisp went to Marcus, "Hurry you must make him your familiar! Kiss him!"

Marcus looked around at the chaos swirling around him, and he wanted to protest until one of the wisps pushed him in Kuzo's path. He grunted when he hit the demon's chest and stumbled for a minute before turning his face up towards him, "please! Kiss him! You have to if you want to keep your home in tact!" the wisp cried out.
Marcus wasn't sure what was happening, and wanted to get away from the confusion more than anything else, but the thought of losing another home struck a cord in him. He blinked and felt panic rise up in himself before he pressed his lips against Kuzo's.

Kuzo grunted when the human fell on him. He was about to push him away when he was kissed. His eyes went wide and he broke away glaring, "I evaded that old man for years and I was taken by... by a human?!" He yelled and wiped his mouth, "God damnit! You stupid wisps!" he gasped as chain tattoos appeared on his wrists and he glared at the human, "Do you even understand what you have done?!" He yelled.
"Of course you don't!" He threw his hands up pacing, "I am your familiar now! I follow your orders! I can't be released unless you take another familiar or I die protecting you! UGH! Stupid human!"
