It was a pleasant evening, the day's rain was passed and Trine was bustling with life as the majority of its inhabitants finished their day's work and kicked back to relax.

On the edge of one of the Weyr's many open gathering spaces, just south of the joining point between the trio of lakes, a scarred woman sat cross-legged on the ground with her back to a log - worn smooth by use as a bench - carefully unpicking the stitching on a set of flying straps. Leaning up against the log next to her was a wooden case, it was fiddle shaped and so presumably it contained a fiddle.

Every so often she would pause in her work to look up and out over the water, smiling distantly to herself in the manner of a rider conversing with their dragon.

The dragon in question, as scarred as her bondmate, was enjoying a swim and occasionally snapping lazily at fish as they flashed past her.

"I am sure you're right," Kleos said aloud with a small nod, "Killakeeth has always produced well in the past."

thanks for starting.

Vos had been torn in two initially at the rain. It tended to keep her at the weyr which could or couldn't be fun; she was afraid the rain would put people into a grumpy mood. On the other hand, it cooled the land and air down which, for her, created a relaxed atmosphere. She knew her dragon was happy except for the sand that was clinging to her hide in wet cold clumps.

She caressed the golden eyeridges as Killakeeth gave a giant exhale. "Call if you need me," the woman murmured with a final pat before she headed off. A kit slung over one shoulder, and riding straps were tucked under her other arm. Vos had noticed some serious flaws in her riding gear in her last exam. She needed to fix it before she dared ride a fall with it.

Vos plopped down into a spot nearby Kleos. "Evening!" She greeted the older rider as she spread out the offending straps and eyeballed them carefully.

No problem!

The sound of footsteps approaching caused Kleos to raise her head from her work, being alert to the smallest sounds was a habit she and many others had never got out of after the war. When she took in the identity of the owner of the footsteps however she relaxed and offered a smile. "Good evening Vosin." She had been going to ask if the gold rider wished to join her, but she already had. Well no harm done and beautiful company never went amiss even if she knew that said beauty was unattainable; at least with a gold rider she knew where she stood and couldn't get her hopes up.

"It seems our evening's task is the same," she commented as Vosin gave her straps a very hard stare, making a gesture to her own as she spoke. "After our drill this morning I noticed a crack in the upper right chest strap, it was new only a sevenday ago! I shall have to make a complaint to the tanners if this happens again. What's the trouble with yours?" A little conversation would make the task pass by much more quickly and she was rather pleased it had been Vosin to join her in any case, she still needed to extend her compliments on a good Flight and offer her best wishes for a healthy clutch.

"How are the wings flying Kleos?" Sometimes she'd have like to fly with the regular wings. "If you need someone to fill in a hole for practice we'd love to practice with you." Probably it wouldn't be needed, but she made the offer anyhow. The task at hand was her riding leathers. The all important straps that held her to Killa's neck while they flew. They needed some attention. She spotted one connection where the straps had started to pull apart where they'd been sown together. That would needed to be fixed and....

Vos glanced up at Kleos and looked over her leathers. "Does doesn't it? That's not good! Maybe an apprentice got a bad piece in?" Supposedly a master would check anything sent to the weyr, but mistakes could be made. She shook her head sympathetically. "Ugh the leather holes are stretching near this spot. Then I think it's cracking on this breast strap here. Just general maintenance I suppose." Boring, droll, and time consuming; yet it was a vital task that every rider worth his or her life had to do.

"I suppose a substandard piece is inevitable from time to time," Kleos replied with a wry smile and a small shrug. "It's frustrating, but so long as one does proper checks - as we are - it only leads to a waste of time." Not all riders were so diligent, it had happened more than once that a rider's straps snapped during a Fall because they hadn't been checking their gear thoroughly enough.

"Dauntless flies well," Kleos continued with a slight nod for emphasis. "We have a green and a brown grounded with injuries at present but we are still at a good flying strength." She couldn't imagine not being a part of a flying wing, and Vosin had never been given a choice. It seemed unfair but that was the nature of life she supposed. However.... "I am running an extra drill the day after tomorrow giving the wing various handicaps. Perhaps you'd like to come along to that, fly a bronze's position? I'm sure it can only benefit your work in the Queen's Wing if you've actually been part of a drill or two with a combat wing. With a better understanding of how we work, you will have a better understanding of how things can go wrong and be able to react accordingly." That sounded reasonable to her and it would be a surprise for the wing, the whole point of the handicap drill was to force them to adapt to strange situations on the fly as it were.

Lol really want to run an rp for the drill? XD Vos is totally excited.

It was so awesome that Kleos was a wingleader. Luckily Vos wasn't a jealous type or she might have been envious of the crimsonrider's position. "Indeed. It might not be the master's fault either," she mused. "It could just be the leather itself." Leather was made from animal hides, and everyone knew no hide was ever fully perfect. An un-spotted imperfection could have caused the stretching or cracks they found after a little bit of use. The life of a tanner must be hard, Vosin mused.

"I'm so glad to hear!" Kleos probably wouldn't be wingleader for long if her wing didn't preform well. Vosin was just glad to hear her fellow riders were doing well. She perked up when a green and brown were mentioned being out with injuries. "I hope they'll recover soon," inside she was dying with curiosity to know how they'd been injured. Had it been in the last threadfall? Was it bad or would they recover soon. Vosin's excitement woke her dragon as Kleos invited them to actually join a practice drill. "Yes! Oh yes! Thank you Kleos! I've always wanted to participate in at least the practices, but well you know..." she waved a hand vaguely at the air.

'What are you getting into this time Mine?' Killakeeth stilled as she listened to her rider explain the offer. 'Well. Hand in the tunnelsnake burrow as usual. Very well. It should prove lively.' If only to stir up a bit of trouble with the wing could be fun.

"Right! Anything special I should know?" It was hard to focus on her straps now that she could think about something else. It wasn't that she'd actually try to fly with a fighting wing during a fall, but this practice should be exciting enough. At least it would be different! And she'd get to interact with her fellow riders of a different wing.

XD I might do! If a few more Dauntless people become active.

"Humm." Kleos pulled out the last of the stitches attaching the faulty piece to the rest of her harness and removed it. "Well the pace will be a lot faster than you're accustomed to I imagine. Do you drill with painted ropes? That's what we will be using in the practice. The location for our drill hasn't been decided as yet, I will be looking for a location experiencing strong winds to make things a little more difficult; prepare for the worst, as it were. Humm. Your flamethrower is smaller than a dragon's flame of course but the aim of the drill is to handicap a few people and make sure that the rest of the wing is able to cover for them, to get them through without major 'injury'." As she spoke Kleos picked up the fresh piece of leather she had brought to replace the defective one.

"You're the reason we're doing this as it happens," she continued with a brief smile over to Vosin before looking back down at her work. "Killakeeth is, I should say. In a turn or so we shall have new riders among us and though Weyrling training is of an excellent standard new riders never perform perfectly their first few Falls with a proper wing and so it's important that their comrades are able to get them through alive until they've gained a little experience."

She listened avidly as Kleos talked, barely managing to take out a couple stitches on her riding harness. Her focus had rather shifted from the task at hand. Vos had seen the firey blasts above her head from the higher wings. They were much more frequent than the flamethrower blasts she used from the back of her low, fast flying queen. Excitement! How many would she be able to destroy before she got a serious hit?

"Only a little bit to make sure the flamethrowers are in working order and on target." It'd be fun to use a bit more flamethrower work. She considered places that got high winds. "Maybe the edge of a cliff or in the mountains." Vos wasn't sure what kind of place Kleos wanted, but that wasn't up to her to decide or really worry about. All she needed to do was show up at the right time and place. She tugged a few more stitches out of her straps. Disappointingly it sounded like the wingleader expected her to become a "casualty" of the practice.

Vos shook her head. She wasn't going to complain! This is what she'd asked for after all. The woman focused on her leathers to finish removing the stitches so she could examine the offending end. Yup, much more and it would have torn out. She tossed it aside and picked up a new one. Surprise made her look up again. "Oh?" Of course. Killa would be clutching soon. It wasn't all about the gold! If she hadn't been here then neither would her dragon. At least Vos told herself that Killa wouldn't have Impressed to anyone else. "Makes sense. You need to be ready to train them, and you have to be well trained yourselves to do that." She really really hoped the clutch was impressive. So much was expected from them.

"Humm, you know I never have seen a flamethrower working up close. If you don't object I should like to be there when you do your safety checks," Kleos said with a smile that turned into a bit of a grin. "Dragonflame may be larger, but there is a lot to be said for wielding fire with your own hands! I look forward to seeing how you can wield the weapon in action too, you must have excellent aim and get rather close to the Thread itself at times."

As Vosin spoke about the upcoming clutch Kleos nodded, her smile softening. "Indeed. They always seem so young when they first graduate, even the riders who are already twenty or twenty one turns. A lot is expected from new wingriders right from takeoff, all we can do is try to support them as they learn to shoulder the burden they have taken on." A great number of them probably wouldn't live even to be as old as Kleos was herself today and she did not feel very old, at least most of the time. Such was the life of a dragonrider however, it was a duty that had to be done no matter the cost.

"What?! Really? I'll bring mine to your drill if you haven't seen me work it by then." Vos replied firmly. She'd be happy to show her gear to anyone who wanted to see it. Just like any rider wanted to show off how well their dragon flamed. It was a point of pride. She was a bit surprised that Kleos hadn't seen it before. Did they not bother to show the regular riders until it was known for sure a crimson would be a breeder? Vos thought it would be good for the regular wings to know the basics at least. The woman returned the grin, "I'd be happy to demonstrate."

She nodded as she agreed with Kleos. Especially the younger the candidate. Dragons grew so fast some hardly had time to grow up themselves. "It's a whole new life in a way. It takes time to break in new shoes y'know? If you have any that need an extra hand you know you can send them to me right?" The young of the weyr was their lifeblood. Without new dragons Pern would die. She wasn't nearly as familiar as Kleos about the responsibility changes expected from weyrlinghood to wingrider. That in a way made her safe if the younger riders had a problem they might not feel comfortable with among their wing.

Vos focused on the leather as she finished exchanging out the strap and moved to work on the next piece. It looked like the old of between had gotten to this particular strap, making it stretch dangerously. She didn't want it to snap suddenly mid-flight!

It was predictably about this time that a brown bandit came winging over. Vintage peered down as he did a flyby of the pair of women. His person was down there and he was hungry. Being lazy was much better today than trying to hunt his own meal. He gave a plaintive croon and came to land nearby Vosin. The brown crawled until he was standing in the middle of her work where he couldn't be ignored, and stood crooning and flicking his tongue out. His sign of exactly what he wanted.

"Oh, excellent!" Kleos positively beamed at Voisn. "I'm quite certain the rest of the wing would be fascinated to see one working up close too, from behind of course. To my mind at least they have a certain mystique, a touch of the ancient about them. They must be one of the few old devices we remembered how to make and maintain until the recent surge of interest in the ancients' ways." She didn't have the time to learn much of the new discoveries that were coming to light but that they existed still amazed her. What secrets had they lost, and what might they yet recover?

"And thank you, I will remember that," Kleos continued with a nod. "Neither of us can know what they will be like of course, but it could well be that some would benefit from a chance to talk over problems with you that they might feel awkward sharing with me, or with a fighting wing peer- Oh!" At that point Kleos spotted the firelizard and started smiling again. "Well, who is this then? What a handsome fellow he is!"

How pleased Kleos' wing would be to have a goldrider showing a flamethrower them when they rode flaming dragons was still up for debate. Vosin grinned. Being surprised could be fun. She laughed, "always from behind." One didn't want to get toasted. "They're really quite simple once you get the hang of them," Vosin promised. She nodded, although she wasn't sure that the resurgence of ancient stuff was all that great. It had brought the rise of Keller and everyone knew how that ended.

"I'd be happy to provide that option if they feel they should need it." It was a token trifle really, most riders bonded well with their peers and wingriders. If it helped the riders of Kleos' wing, then she'd be willing to spend a little time listening to another's troubles. Vosin had to pause in her work as a her brown flit found her and demanded food. She was about to tell him to go hunt when Kleos noticed the flit. "Allow me to introduce Vintage."

He could tell that his person hadn't a lick of anything tasty about her. Sometimes she had a meat roll stashed in her pouch that she'd feed him. Compliments from the not-his person drew his attention to her. With a last sideways glance at Vosin, he sidled over to the other woman. Again he tried sitting on his back legs and flicking his tongue in and out to entice her to feed him.

"Perhaps they are, but we aren't used to them," Kleos pointed out with a smile and a vague genial gesture. "And we are always pleased to learn something new in Dauntless, we have regular sessions dedicated to broadening our minds and skillsets. And Vintage, is it?" Kleos' smile widened a little as the brown approached her and she reached out to tickle him under the chin if he would allow it. "Ah, it has been too long since I had a firelizard," she murmured half to herself, "they are such little darlings! Sweet, playful, and loyal." She still missed Ice, she'd had him before she had even known Moriath and his absence was still a little cold hole in her heart that would never close. Moss too she missed, though in the case of the green she had the comfort of believing that she was alive out there somewhere and perhaps the ruling mother of her own little faire.

"How long have you had him?" Kleos asked, tearing her eyes away from the firelizard to regard Vosin once again.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 11, 2015 10:44 am

[ quote="TawnyAngel"]

She nodded with understanding. There was only so many flamethrowers. Being they were reserved for the golds and breeding crimsons, the wing masses hardly got to see them let alone touch them. Vosin was going to watch carefully who was really interested in her flamethrower and who just pretended because the wingleader ordered it. There was still some things that divided riders.

"Aye." Vos perked up as Kleos murmured to herself. "You had a firelizard?" This wasn't something she knew. She tried to think if she'd ever seen Kleos with a firelizard. "What happened to it?" She regarded Vintage. "Quite a few Turns now. Our parents got us eggs when we Impressed our dragons." It seemed like so long ago. Another time, another place. How she still missed Benden.

He was hoping for food. Not a tickle under the chin. The brown allowed it in the hopes of being offered food in return. He cheeped pathetically. Sometimes they were so slow to understand what he wanted. He needed to have patience with them.

"Ah, I did," Kleos replied with a small smile for the nostalgia. She did miss him, and Moss too, but it was a little hole that she was well used to by now. "I had a blue named Ice, who fired a green I named Moss. Moss was never all that close to me but Ice was, I found him when I was sixteen.... Unfortunately he died in the final battle at Malvren, distracting Kellask so that I had time to get back onto my feet and fight. When he died Moss went feral, I like to think she might still be alive out there somewhere." Kleos shrugged, still smiling faintly as she stroked Vintage. "He was a brave little fellow, my Ice. Humm, but I think your fellow would like more than attention from me? Is it feeding time?" Some firelizards thought it was always feeding time and ended up almost too fat to fly as a result.
