Glitnir was doing an early afternoon patrol round before he went up to his planet later. He was going to need time to spare for whatever Cornelius had in mind, so an early round could help him catch someone. You didn't commonly see powered people in broad daylight, but it happened, and so it was worth a shot. Besides, earlier meant more people meant more targets for the Negaverse.

Curiously, instead of finding a Negaverse aura, he could feel a Page somewhere nearby instead. Pages were great; he could pass on his knowledge to them, and they could pass it on in turn. It was like practice for being a teacher, in a way. Extracurricular practice. He was going to get enough curricular practice starting in the fall. He approached the Page, looking to investigate the new aura.

Afternoons weren't usually Mont Blonc's forte either. He felt much more comfortable under the cover of night. He risked so many more stares during the day, especially given his exposed midriff and - god it was mortifying.

But Lorne had been reading in a quieter section of the park when he'd spotted a low-key youma darting around in the low branches of a tree, some cat-rat looking monstrosity with an unidentifiable hunk of meat in its paws. So that hadn't left him a whole lot of choice in the matter.

Several minutes and broken branches later, he'd just managed to get the thing under foot and stab it soundly once with his pen, completely unaware that anyone else had come along.

Glitnir heard scuttling and scrambling from somewhere nearby and scurried over to investigate. There was indeed a Page of Saturn having a tussle with a youma. The question was, did he have it enough under control that he wouldn't have to step in. "Do you need help there?" he called out. Though he needed to do his share, it was important to let the less powerful ones get experience too. Not that there were experience points to dole out, of course, but the point still stood. He still went closer and positioned his hands for a good swing at the youma if something got out of hand.

Of course, Mont Blonc being Mont Blonc, when he heard an unfamiliar voice his first response was to jump, a startled little sound escaping his lips. As if the youma sensed his surprise, it went ahead and wiggled out from under his foot, making an attempt to run off with the page's weapon jutting out of its back.

"Oh no, " Mont Blonc groaned, casting Glitnir a brief look that said 'yes, help, please', before he went lunging after the creature to try and get his own weapon back, and then hopefully finish the job. "Get back here!"

Well, something did indeed get out of hand; the youma was now running off with the Page's weapon embedded in its back. Making use of Squire speed, Glitnir dashed in front of the catrat youma and swung his scales at its head. The hit was solid, and with a squalling cry, the youma crumbled to dust right there. When the dust settled, he picked up the pen and held it out to the Page. "I take it this is yours?" Glitnir considered himself lucky for a moment; he had a vaguely useful weapon at Page stage, and he had gotten a lot of information from a reliable source early on. He needed to be there for Pages like this one that were floundering.

Mont Blonc was fairly flushed with embarrassment by this point, his shoulders stooped and his chin tilted down towards the ground as he smiled weakly and reclaimed his weapon. "Thank you... "

Then, without a youma around, the fact that he was standing here with someone that was clearly like him. Stronger, and definitely not of Saturn, but the same none the less. Even so, the twist of nerves in the pit of his stomach was a familiar one. "I-I'm Mont Blonc... of Saturn, " he introduced himself quietly, although he liked to think that he was improving. "Thank you again, I... I almost had it, but..." He gestured to the pen in his hand a little helplessly.

The poor Page reeked of shyness and embarrassment. Someone was going to have to relieve him of that reaction eventually; the meek seemed to have trouble being Knights on their own. "Nice to meet you, Mont Blonc. I'm Glitnir, Squire of Mars." Glitnir nodded understandingly when Mont Blonc gestured to his pen. "I can't believe the youma ran off with your weapon still stuck in it. I think you could just dismiss it and then re-summon it to get it back? I haven't tried something like that, but if you do it first, tell me if it works." He didn't lose his weapon often, since he kept such a tight grip on the chain, but something was bound to happen eventually. If Mont Blonc ran that little experiment, he'd be doing Knight science a service.

Even if Mont Blonc knew he had to be less awkward and anxious, it was a lot easier said than done. It was an ongoing, uphill battle with him, but... at least he had people like Aegir and Methone. Comfort zones got smashed hard and fast when they got involved.

"A pleasure, " he said politely with a dip of his head. Mars; somehow he thought he should have figured as much. The page laughed sheepishly at the suggestion. "Y-you know, I probably could've done that, but... hah, didn't even think of it, um... oh, here!"

He held out the pen sheepish to the squire. "Maybe, uh, keep it or toss it somewhere? - see if I can do it? - if you're not busy?" Considering how much of this knight stuff didn't come easily to him, it'd be nice to be on top of something.

"It's all right. You don't have to think of everything as a Page." Glitnir took the pen from Mont Blonc and inspected it briefly. "Good idea! Better to test it now when it's safe than when it's stuck in a big, nasty youma." He gave the pen a quick underhand toss, and it rolled into a wall a few feet away. "All right, try it, see if you can dismiss it and call it back." A cautionary idea occurred to him shortly after. "There's probably some sort of limit on this, though. Like, maybe if you do it too many times, you can't call your weapon back? You should probably be careful with this little trick."

Limits. That made sense, although really, more limits on a weapon that wasn't really much of a weapon to begin with made his stomach twist a little. - he wondered, not for the first time, how much of an asset he could actually be to people. Especially his friends.

"Okay, okay, hold on... let's see if I can do this at all, " and he cracked a nervous little smile before shutting his eyes, trying to recall how he made his pen vanish and appear in the first place. It was almost subconscious when he did that, though - he'd gotten a stunning example recently that overthinking it all wasn't doing him any favors. So he tried to do it naturally, just sort of... let it happen.

It took a minute, or maybe more. Mont Blonc was just beginning to feel moronic standing there with his eyes closed, nothing happening, and his pen off in a bush when suddenly, he felt the familiar weight in his hand. His eyes snapped open, and he grinned, somewhat over enthused. (Really though, after the kind of history he'd had, any small victory was enough!) "Well look at that!"

... of course it'd taken him a long time and that wouldn't fly in any battle but whatever. It was something.

Glitnir stood and awkwardly watched as it took the pen a full minute to reappear in the Page's hand. Did it really take that much concentration to summon a weapon? Yes, right, maybe it did. In his early days, it once took him three tries to call his weapon to hand in transform. If he was going to become a good teacher, he was going to have to stop taking these skills for granted. When the pen finally appeared in Mont Blonc's hand, he shared the Page's delight. "You did it! Now you just have to keep practicing till you can do it faster. That youma would have been down the block with your pen if you'd tried to do that before."

"Seriously, " Mont Blonc breathed in an exasperated way, cracking a lopsided smile and shrugging his shoulders haphazardly. "I- I seriously think too hard, " might as well explain it out loud, a bit helplessly. "I keep missing all these cues, things I should know... "

Now he was getting off-topic, and this was the last thing Glitnir probably wanted to hear him prattling on about. "A-anyway, this is something, so thank you - and, um, for the youma too." He fidgeted, tugging idly at the edge of his shirt.

"Maybe that's it," Glitnir said. "You overthink things and don't just go with the flow. Maybe you're looking for something where there isn't anything to worry about. But sometimes it's hard to tell what you should and shouldn't know, especially as a Page." He gave Mont Blonc a pat on the shoulder that was intended to be reassuring. "I think you need to relax a little. Maybe you could take a day off and cool down."

Mont Blonc knew that's exactly what it was - but what was so stressful about it was he didn't know what was the 'flow' and what was just sitting around waiting for something that might not come. He grinned wryly, appreciating the advice of course - Glitnir was clearly experienced - but, "Thank you. I just - it's hard, taking time. I've already taken a lot of time, " he admitted, almost like he was ashamed. He sort of was.

Even if things had worked out for him in the long run - he had Oroboros now - he'd still procrastinated for over a year. He had dragged his feet about coming back to help. If it hadn't been for the dreams of that future haunting him, he might never have returned at all. "I haven't really... I haven't been a great page. I don't know if I'll ever really be great. But I want to be good, at least."

"Sometimes it takes time. Sometimes the universe drops things on you whether you're ready or not, sometimes it waits till long after you're ready. It's unpredictable, but after a while you learn to appreciate it." Glitnir nodded as he continued. "Good is good. You don't have to be an amazing shining star to do your part. Sometimes it's good to just act from the wings of the stage instead of the center." It made Glitnir think of his own "greatness;" sure, he was helping to train Pages and working on something interesting on his Wonder, but did it make him stand out? He didn't particularly care about standing out, but it was an interesting question either way.
