tiny> Tarazeth protested, swinging her head to inspect the young weyrlings working their way through ground drills. She was reasonably certain that even she had never been quite so tiny, even though her memory didn’t quite stretch back that far.
The snow had abated - at least temporarily - though much of the bowl was trampled to a frozen muddy slush. The little green was not impressed by that, and was looking forward to going back south, with its jewel-like beaches and warmth. It was not that dragons minded the cold, precisely, more that they enjoyed the heat. Her rider was visiting to report back to her wingleader on what they had been doing (and it made the dragon preen internally to think of how much they were trusted, of how much they had redeemed themselves - because everyone made mistakes, didn’t they?).

Letting out a sigh Sereth managed the mental equivalent of an eye roll. There was something ironic about a green condemning other dragons for their size. Sereth was sure there were other dragons who though Tarazeth herself was tiny. The bronzes and gold definitely would, maybe some of the browns.
Sereth shifted slightly, effectively making a dragon-sized groove in the ground. Not everyone could disappear off to the ends of nowhere to gallivant around. Her young would grow and show this dragon and any other dissenters just how useful they were. The other dragons from their time had proven themselves capable. Regulith had outpaced the dragons of this time and their children would continue to do so

Hunath wasn't supposed to be there.
At least, that's what many people seemed to think. Hunath knew otherwise. She was exactly where she was supposed to be, trampling along in formation with the rest of her clutchmates. The young gold tossed her head, jaws open wide in a toothy grin above a rather puffed out chest as she remembered the pattern they were practicing with little difficulty. Pride practically oozed off of her well oiled hide as she broadcast a smug laughter across the training grounds. Hah! Match that if you can! She crowed.
Oh yes she was learning the drills right alongside the future wingriders of High Reaches. When the time had come for her to step out of their lessons the gold had raised a huge racket. There was no reason she couldn't do what they did? There was every reason she SHOULD be doing as they did in her mind! And doing it better! Hunath even tried the old 'how can I lead with wisdom that I do not have?'. She had set to arguing day and night until finally if just to shut her up she'd been allowed to participate in the ground drills. In the end, determined to prove wrong those who had doubted her, Hunath had thrown herself into the lessons with an intense focus.
Zen on the other hand was still cramming catch-up lessons to make up for missing out on turns worth of candidacy and an overall lack of literacy that really put the teenager off her mood when shoved in her face. She was making progress, but it would be some time before she was on par with the rest of her clutchmates.
At the moment, she was watching Hunath drill with the rest of them, a smile stretching her own face despite being near-hidden within the thick scarf and cloak she wore. Playing the scandalous southern maiden had got old quick as the weather turned colder.
"This cold is inhumane." She commented dryly.

Tarazeth grumbled, paddling a little further into the lake where she could simply float, enjoying the sensation of the cold water on her hide.
She wasn’t needling deliberately… but neither was she really considering her audience.

Oh, she did not like this dragon. Honestly, who'd have expected a green to have a 'small dragons are useless' issue. Maybe it was all internalised self-hatred. That or she felt threatened, wasn't this the dragon that was always going on about how fast she was. Sereth was willing to bet her daughters would out speed her when they were grown.
She may have jumped before threadfall, but she'd been big back home. Pern had not fallen to thread then and their numbers weren't so different. Maybe it was easier to just teach big dragons to blast, rather than do anything with precision.

Tarazeth retorted, irritated by even the perception that she and her rider were useless - if they were, they wouldn't have been given special orders, like they had, right? Right.
She would regret saying that later, but she was caught up in the heat of the moment now.

What a typical answer, Sereth snorted to herself. It was ridiculous really. You didn't have to do something to know about it. Berath had been very helpful to her in guarding her eggs, but she could not naturally clutch. Seemed even though this time thought itself, oh, so progressive, they were still set on dictating that dragons by default could not understand things because of their colour.
Sereth snapped. Nersha had been assigned duties, but Sereth had never been given them. Nersha's job wasn't even something she could help with! Instead this Weyr had simply stated that she sit down and shut up until rising happened. Quiet, Dear, the non-golds are talking.

Hunath's head whipped around and her eyes narrowed as she 'overheard' the conversation between her clutchmother and the green. ~ Excuse me? I am no one's copy.~ The young gold broke formation and marched over to the older dragons, neck arched and tail lashing behind her. ~ I am an Original. I am beyond match. There has never been and there will never be a dragon like me! Now if you want to refer to me as a copy because you're jealous I can't help you there but just know that that petty attitude is what's really holding you back.~
Zen watched with mild interest. Hunath had shown a distinct inability to let things slide by. Whatever the rest of the conversation had been though, Zen wanted to see how this played out.
---------------------------------------
Zarike was walking Peth to cool down after another round of laps. The deep snow didn't bother the large dragon much outside of being too cold for his tastes but Zarike was concerned. As winter set in Peth had started to 'fill out' again. Not being wingriders, or even being able to fly safely severely limited the amount of exercise his gluttonous lifepartner got regularly. Plus the brown had a tendency to overeat if Zarike wasn't watching him.
Peth snorted. ~ I eat when I'm hungry. What's the problem with that?
"Because you're always hungry." Zarike prodded Peth's side from where he rode, protected from the cold by the heat of the dragon beneath him. "Look Peth." He directed the dragon's attention away from the thought of food as he felt the stirrings of interest in Peth's mind. "Sharath's clutch is working on drills. Let's go watch." Zarike had little interest in the drills himself... He felt he knew them all too well for someone who would never be using them. It got Peth's mind off of eating though and he did like seeing the small dragons and their bondeds. It would be interesting to watch them grow and see how they fit into the wings. Plus there was a hint of tension building between Sharath and the green beside her.
Peth chuckled and fluttered his wings stirring up the coils of steam that rose off of them. He then took a sharp turn and picked up speed, trotting towards the group of weyrlings and their observers. Trouble was interesting and quite often fun and it appeared the little gold might be stirring things up again.

Tarazeth’s tail flicked irritably, a little cloud of steam issuing from her nostrils as she snorted (it was cold enough that anyone could see their breath in the air). my fault you’re all too precious to even dare risk against the smallest danger, in case you break a claw. What a disaster that would be>

B'tes, who had been standing back calling instructions to his class, began to frown. Humph! While he was a generally gentle spirit he was also a spirit who took his job seriously and this was not on. Signalling to one of his assistants to take over the dak-skinned rider moved over to Zen and cleared his throat pointedly. "A word in you ear, Zen?"

Hunath huffed, puffing up her chest and flaring her wings. The weyrling's eyes flashed orange as she stared up at the adult green. How about I break a claw off in you huh?
Oh Shells. He couldn't have waited just a few more moments? She could feel the little gold's temper spark bright in the back of her mind. She found herself at war at these times. On one hand, Hunath's reactions was exactly what Zen enjoyed seeing most... in other people. Seeing someone else get fired up over little things was entertaining when you were calm and 'above' such reactions but it was hard going trying to get Hunath to see things her way, or at least to remember when something set her off again. Zen turned a pleasant smile on B'tes while keeping one eye on Hunath."Yes sir, of course?"

B'tes composed his hands behind his back, took a breath, and then spoke calmly. "Zen, I didn't have to allow Huanth to join in with the class. Truthfully it would be easier for me if she didn't, and so in return for my trouble I expect her to respect this time. If she does not return to formation within the next two minutes she will not take part in any further classes that are non standard for a gold. Do I make myself absolutely clear?"

Sereth practically glowed as the little gold came up and asserted herself. It wasn't because of her colour it was because she was feisty and strong. Sereth could not have looked prouder as she observed the situation. She had no intention of stopping Hunath. She was only 'tiny', wasn't that what Tarazeth used? Tiny and only good for spawning, so she shouldn't be a trouble at all. Hunath didn't need her weighing in an saving her from some snarky green.

A lick of Tarazeth’s common sense asserted itself, the green paddling herself a little further out - hopefully out of reach. not getting into a fight with a baby gold. That is so many levels beneath me I can’t even count them>

Zen's eyelids lowered as B'tes spoke. "From what I understand sir she had been insulted by a member of our 'audience'." Sure that might have been bending the truth a bit but whatever. "There wouldn't have been an interruption otherwise. You know how determined she is to be a part of these lessons." Zen smiled up at him again.
~Hunath. Leave it. You're better than that.~
Hunath's claws dug deep into the muddy mess beneath her and she let out a quiet whispering growl. With reluctance she turned around and stuck her head up high in the air. Beneath you? She huffed with disdain. Please. You're hardly worth the effort, let alone the time. I've got better things to do than humor your ego. Back turned, she strutted back towards the rest of her clutch mates, but not before flicking her tail through the muck and 'accidentally' sending a few clods towards a certain dragon.
