This week had been especially hot, at least 100 degrees on a few days, or more. Today, the heat was unbearable. If you weren't accustomed to the heat, it could be dangerous. Especially if you didn't stay hydrated. Lucario had never been affected by the heat before. Guessing old age and children had taken a toll on his hit points!
Lucario had volunteered to work at a local orchard, in return for some of the fruits from the harvest. He intended to keep a few on hand, for days he needed more energy. Or to share with family if he came across any. What he hadn't planned on, was how hot it would be, and how his body would react to the heat.
After finishing his work, he received a bushel of apples in a small satchel. It was gross how much he was sweating. He exchanged a thank you with the local, and went on his way. Still, so dang hot outside! Phew!
Lucario could feel his heart pounding in his chest. His stomach felt queasy. Maybe he was hungry? The thought of eating one of the apples made him feel sick. Ick.. no food. Even the thought of water made him nauseous. He supposed he would just head home, and get some rest till his appetite returned.
Heading down the path, his head started to spin. What was with him today?
The sun above burned through him, as if baking him from the outside in. Or that's how it felt. Bah! Lucario looked up at the sun, to evaluate the situation, and the world went out from underneath him...
Everything felt like it was moving without him. In a shifting plain, the land circled around him, and rose up to meet him. Red apples spilled on the ground, escaping from their sack. His head, pained from the impact. Lucario didn't pass out. Yet.
As the sky hung above him with a blinding orange glow, he tried to get up. So tired.. His back legs kicked, but he didn't budge. Mustering all his strength, he tried again. White spots floated before him. His eyes rolled back in his head, and he blacked out.
An uncomfortable, and dangerous, unwanted, nap... If someone didn't help him, he could have a heat stroke!
All he had wanted, was a nice gift of some delicious fruit, to bring back to the mare that he was close with. Having found someone that could tolerate his stoic attitude, and read his emotions, even when he didn't express them. Now, those apples were in the dirt, and so was he... Health points reduced to the point of passing out.
He wasn't conscious enough, to hear the cry of the mare that came to his aid. Nor felt a thing as she tried to tend to him.

Precious Hope had the benefit of the wind in the sky to keep her cool, as she soared through the new lands of the Kawani area. Having only arrived yesterday, it was all fresh, exciting, and a little intimidating. Most everyone had been so nice to her. Tonight she would camp wherever her hoof fell on an empty spot of grass. Last night, she had felt a little home sick, being used to the company of her family and friends. This mare had a strong heart though, so she didn't cry. Hope managed to fall asleep easily, on her borrowed bed of earth. The days of travel helped her to sleep. Long flight wasn't something she was accustomed too. Her muscles ached a little from the over use. Today she told herself she would take it easy. This morning, the trek to find food and water, had been made on hoof. Having regained some energy, she decided to fly a little, to check out her surroundings. Large wings flapped through the air as she traveled. The satchel around her neck, flopped against her chest. Every now and then, she would toss a shoulder back, to hoist the bag out of the way. It still slid back to the front after a few moments passed. As she was fighting with her bag, mid flight, (totally a safe thing to do) she saw the stallion of steel blue walking on a dirt path below her. Before she looked away, she saw him collapse, with red orbs spilling out of him. Oh gosh! she thought as she gasped out loud. Without a second thought, she quickly raced to the ground, madly flapping her wings when the ground got too close, to stick a landing. The landing was messy, with the rushed decent. After Precious had four hooves on the ground, she called out in a panic as she rand to his side. "Are you okay?!" No response. Well, the red orbs had only been apples. That was a small relief. Precious Hope fussed over the stallion, checking to see if he was wounded. In her mind, she went over his vitals: Breathing - hard, but breathing Pulse - rapid Body temperature - highThe patient is alive at least, but out cold. Looking around for her satchel, she lifted a wing in confusion, then the other. It had escaped from around her neck when she landed. A glance behind her found it. "I'll be right back." she told him. Even if he couldn't hear her, it was good beside manners. Picking up the satchel, she returned to his side. Plunging her muzzle into her satchel, she pulled out fresh ginger root. Ginger could be used to sweat out a fever. As she turned back to the stallion, she noted that he was already covered in sweat. Hmm. Perhaps no ginger then. He was burning up! She checked his gums, lifting his lips back with a pinion from her wing. Color was good. No hives or spots on the coat. Nothing that indicated sickness, poison. This perplexed her. What was wrong with him? She had to urge to get him out of the hot sun, but he was twice her size. Craning a wing over him, she half shaded him, wondering what to do next. "Hello! Can anybody help us?" she called out, seeing if someone was close by that could aid them. Leaving him here alone didn't seam like a good idea. "Is anybody there? We need help!" she pleaded. Celestial Requiem I can't remember if I sent you the link for this rp or not. Sorry!

Being in a new land was even more exhilarating than Javan had imagined. And he certainly had done plenty of imagining. The stories of countless travelers who had sought the aid of his desert dwelling herd filled his head with vivid images of the world beyond the mountains. But an imagination fed by the oranges and yellows of the desert couldn't accurately picture the brilliant colors of a woodland forest or a field of wildflowers. It was absolutely breathtaking. Where apprehension had been at the forefront in the beginning of this journey, now unbridled excitement took hold. Javan had dreamed of this since foalhood and it was definitely living up to his expectations and then some.
Another difference to note was the heat. The air was cooler between the mountains and the sea, that much was obvious. But the deep waters also brought with them a sticky, heavy humidity. It was stifling, weighing him down with sweat and the atmospheric pressure of storms that were always looming not too far away. It was so vastly different from the dry heat of the desert and he really wasn't expecting it. Thankfully, whether it was a dry heat or a humid one didn't make a difference when it came to what precautions should be taken. Javan had a gourd full of fresh, cool water around his neck and was sure to take frequent rests under shade. He knew his limits and wasn't stupid enough to try and push them. It also helped that he didn't have anywhere to be and could take things at a nice, leisurely pace. Not everyone was as fortunate or knowledgeable as he was, though.
Somewhere on the other side of the sparse forest he had taken shelter under, he heard a cry. The words weren't completely coherent to him, but he could clearly hear the word help. Perhaps a lifetime of responding to similar cries had finely tuned his ears to the word. But in an instant he was making a b-line for whoever was in need. It was basically an instinct at this point.
"There's someone here! I'm coming!" He pushed through the trees and into a cleared area where a winged mare stood over a downed stallion. For a moment a flash of red caused some panic, but Javan was quick to realize it was just apples. Another thing he had learned while with his herd was to remain calm in these situations. Panic never helped anything. He looked over the scene, trying to figure out the situation with as much evidence as he possibly could. Obviously, the stallion was the one in real danger here, but he wasn't going to be able to give any answers in his current condition. So, Javan turned to the mare. Unlike the other, she seemed to be perfectly fine- showed no signs of injury or sickness. But it was never good to assume. "What's happened here? Are you alright?"Lunadriel Sorry to keep you waiting!

Precious Hope gasped as somepony broke into the clearing, flitting on bright golden wings that beamed in the suns rays. Pale blue eyes blinked. Seeing all the different locals still caught her by surprise. Her homeherd is mostly neutral colored. Hope had been taught about all breeds in life. Flutters could shrink themselves to a smaller size, but this one appeared to be full sized. Not that she had ever seen it first hand. The curiosity had always been there, and she bubbled at the thought of treating a tiny patient one day, when she initially learned about them. Even when they were teaching about the breeds to be wary of, Hope found something interesting in each of them, that she wanted to see first hand. If she could study each of them, and learn the different ways to heal each depending on the breed, it would better her skills as a healer. Hope rose to her hoof, and her wings flared out, adrenaline pumping. Thank goodness someone heard her call! Now, if only they have the know how to help this poor fellow in the dirt. "Hey! Over here!" she flailed her wings around in a desperate notion to get his attention. Hope lifted her front hoof off the ground, pushing up, to reach higher with her wings. A breeze caught under her wings, pulling the other hoof off the ground lightly. Yes! He's coming this way! As soon as the golden winged flutter was on the ground, she folded her wings, and began speaking fast. "Please, I am fine." Feathered beads rustled around her face as she whipped her head back to the stallion on the ground. "He has fainted, and my smelling salts, nor any of my herbs seem to bring him to. He is well fed, but still unresponsive!" she leaned over him, fussing over him with a few long pinions from her wing, as she continued to ramble. The faster she could get out what she knew, the quicker he could help, if he could help. "He was carrying apples, and I watched him collapse from above. No blunt trauma to the head at the time. Pulse is rabid, and he's running a fever. No other signs of illness. Can you help him?" she gave a pitiful look to the flutter. The heat in Kawani wasn't something that they had to worry about back home. Otherwise, she no doubt would of learned about heat exhaustion. A few minutes had passed, but it felt like hours. The stallion heaved a deep breath in his slumber. Precious Hope watched like a hawk, seeing if he was waking up. She stopped talking and gave the stranger a chance to speak. Hope winced, wishing she knew what to do. Celestial Requiem Huzzah! First tag of the month.

With confirmation that the mare was fine, Javan turned his attention fully to the stallion. He listened intently as she explained the situation, looking over his unexpected patient carefully. Rapid pulse and fever. Javan also noted the sweat drenching the blue stallion's coat and his heavy breathing. Mix that all together with the blazing hot sun and suffocating humidity and Javan's worries were nearly all washed away. These were all symptoms he'd seen a hundred times before. Even so, it was always healthy to keep a small amount of worry when tending to someone. Things could always take a turn for the worst when you weren't expecting them to.
He looked to the mare, who seemed to be a little frazzled, and gave her a reassuring look. "It's alright. He's just worked himself a little too hard in this heat. First thing he needs right now is some water." And thankfully he had some. Grasping the gourd hanging from his neck between his teeth, Javan moved closer to the other stallion and carefully poured the water on his neck. That was the best place to start cooling off, he'd been taught. The neck had the biggest arteries that were close to the surface of the skin. Of course, it would be ideal if they could completely drench the other stallion, but there was only so much water a hollowed out fruit could hold.
The next objective was going to be a little more difficult to accomplish. "We need to get him out of the sun..." The shade of trees wasn't too far off but this was a rather bulky looking stallion. They weren't going to be able to just push him over there- not to mention it ran the risk of injuring him even more. Javan glanced to the mare's wings for a moment then immediately dashed the idea that came to him. It would be stupid to expect her to stand there shading the stallion with her wings until he recovered. And if she ended up with heat exhaustion as well...
Their best bet at this point might be to wait until the stallion came to. With any luck, he'd be well enough to move into the shade. Obviously Javan had been well prepared to prevent himself from falling prey to the heat, but he had not been expecting to treat someone who had. Clearly he needed to invest in some sort of portable shade. For the meantime, the best they could do for this stallion was keep trying to cool him off with water. "I'm going to get some more water. If you happen to think of a way to get him into shade, go for it. It'll help a lot." Javan didn't waste any time for chitchat and immediately turned back to the woods, heading for a stream he'd passed not too far back.

"Water! Okay!" she bolted to her hooves, and was ready to go. The sand kissed stallion seemed to have further instruction. Dutifully, she stood by and listened. He had her full attention. She nodded as he talked about getting him out of the sun. That was nice of him to offer to go get water! That would be helpful. She could stay here and worry about how to get him in the shade!
This day was turning out to be quite eventful. The problem at hand seemed less out of her control, with the stranger there. To the best she could tell, he seemed to know what he was doing. Watching as his golden dark tipped wings followed behind him, into the woods. That must be the direction from which he came. She hadn't been paying attention, which is why he caught her unexpectedly.
"Okay!" she squeaked after him a bit late. Shade. Shade? She looked over to the tree closest to them. No way could she push the big stallion with the crooked tail over there. It would take great strength to move any adult soquili. Hope got up, and began to look around for something to cover him with. It didn't take her long to think of using the shade from her own wings. Great minds think alike! Even if he had thought it first, she caught on without him having to ask her.
Adjusting her wings, she extended them as far as she could over the stallion. The shade fell over a portion of his body. Looking back over her shoulder, she took note of where the sun was, and moved accordingly. The shade broke through the ends of her pinions. This isn't the ideal shade for the stallion passed out at her hooves, but it had to be better than nothing. Stretching her wings as far as physically possible, she held them there.
Time seemed to be inching by. The sun had barely moved at all! Yet her wings began to shake from being extended unnaturally over the stranger at his feet. Every now and again, she would look down to make sure he was still breathing. He almost seemed to be taking a nap under her arched wings.
"Oooooo!" she began to make noises as her wings cramped up. She tried to fan him off with a few flaps, and at the same time, giving her wings a chance to move. He needs my shade! Rethinking the position in which she stood, she decided to try and stand over him. Straddling the stallion between her legs front and back legs, gave her the stance to shade him with a gentler fan of her wings to each side of her. Much better!

It really was unfortunate that there was no way for the two of them to drag the exhausted stallion to this stream. The water was so cool and refreshing against Javan's legs as he refilled the gourd. And the shade of the forest was more than ideal. But there was no use in pining for what was out of reach right now. There had to be something they could use for shade that was more accessible. That didn't require moving the other stallion.
Had Javan been back home in the desert this wouldn't have been an issue. His herd had always been prepared for things like this. Several members would carry poles while another would carry a large tarp. Whenever the group needed to take a break, or if an unfortunate traveler succumbed to the heat, they would pull the tarp between the poles and make their own shade. But all of that equipment was far too heavy for any one soquili to carry. Otherwise, Javan surely would have brought one on his trip- just to be on the safe side. As things were, he was going to have to find another way to make some shade.
As he headed back towards the mare and the other stallion, Javan kept his eyes sharp in the hopes of finding something that would suffice for shade. There were certainly enough bare branches lying around in the woods, he could build a small shelter out of those. But even with the mare's help it was likely they'd both end up in the same condition as their patient if they tried that. Javan was struggling to come up with a solution to this problem.
By the time he'd made his way back to the other two, the best idea he'd come up with was holding a leafy branch over the blue stallion. It was his best idea, but that didn't mean it was a good one. Javan was so caught up in trying to figure out a solution that he didn't really register the scene before him at first. He was a bit surprised by it when it did finally click. That's not to say he wasn't glad to see she'd found a way to shade their patient. In fact, he was quite pleased that she'd decided to use her wings- mostly because it meant he wouldn't have to ask her himself. But her stance almost gave the impression of a victor standing over her fallen opponent. Had he not known what the situation actually was, Javan might have been a little concerned about what he'd just walked into.
Shaking the thoughts of violent battle from his mind, he quickly got back to the matters at hand. "I have more water. And I see you've found a way to shade him, though I wish we could find something a little more convenient..." He was beginning to sorely miss home now. This wouldn't be such an issue if he were back with his herd. Maybe they'd get lucky and the stallion would come to soon. In the meantime, Javan made a mental note to familiarize himself with the materials available in this area in order to avoid situations like this in the future.
