Peyton wasn't entirely sure what Maebe wanted, only that she wanted to talk. It could have been anything, really. It could have been about them. It could have been about Otto, or Cami, or Dawson. It could have been her eyes, or it could have been some other disaster the dainty Sun didn't even know about yet. There was trepidation as she wandered up to Maebe's door and gave a brief, firm knock against it. "Maebe? I'm here, what's up?" nio love I am the worst, but here we go!

It hadn't been long after she'd first talked to Dawson, that she'd sent Peyton a text. She was still shaking, still anxious, still unable to process what was happening, but Peyton would go visit America if no one told her otherwise. She knew she would. She stood when Peyton arrived, and unlocked the door. Then she opened it, and opened it carefully to make sure it was her. "Come on in." Maebe muttered, opening the door enough to let the girl enter, and closing it shut immediately afterward. Her hand worked the lock quickly, and then put a chair under the knob. "Sit down wherever." Maebe returned to her bed, and slumped down on it. "I've got some bad news."

The hesitation that slowed the opening of Maebe's door was noted with marked curiosity, as was Maebe's unusually subdued behavior. Or perhaps skittish was a better word for it. Peyton watched mutely as the taller girl shut the door quickly behind her and locked it, one pale brow arching in silent question. It dropped again at the mention of bad news, both drawing in as she frowned and followed Maebe to the bed, sinking down beside her. "What do you mean, what bad news?" Her mind had immediately jumped to worst case scenario, though rapidly scaled back, trying to form a list of anything that might have happened that Maebe would have to warn her about. Immediately Otto came to mind, and small hands snapped forward to catch one of Maebe's.

She did not react when Peyton grabbed her hand, she just let the woman take it. This wasn't the kind of bad news that needed comforting. This was a warning. "Have you noticed anything strange about America lately? Has she felt off to you?"

That wasn't really what Pey had been expecting Maebe to say, and ever so slightly the smaller girl's shoulders began to loosen. The worry remained, but now it was accompanied by confusion. "You mean aside for the normal sort of off behavior someone might exhibit after a bad break up?" Brows knit, the Sun frowned, trying to think back to the break up, to America's behavior directly after and since. Maybe if Peyton had gotten a little more directly involved, but America and Taym were both her best friends. She hadn't known what to do.

She couldn't argue there. A person was unpredictable after a rough break-up. It would be easy to simply blame everything on that, and move on. She'd certainly done so, until she'd been told otherwise. "Do you really think she reacted normally to the break-up? I mean, does nothing seem a little strange about how.. I don't know.. 'okay' she was?" Her hands waved in the air, as if to disregard the whole thing. "Whatever, doesn't matter, truth is there's something not even I noticed until I was told, and the only reason I'm telling you too is because you're close to her, and I knew you might feel inclined to go visit her some time. And I wanted to make sure that didn't happen."

Peyton had to think about that for a moment. Really, it hadn't seemed that off, not when the Sun thought back to previous cases of trauma. America had always put on a brave face, always hidden away how badly something had effected her. It had always reminded Peyton of the way a dog would hide an injury. There wasn't time for an answer though, Maebe was talking again, and what she had to say was cryptic and worrying. "Why?" Suspicion colored her voice, pale eyes narrowing in perplexed concern. "What's wrong with her?"

She was beginning to regret her decision. "Is there any chance I can say it's just too dangerous to get anywhere near her, and leave it at that?" She smiled sheepishly, with the vain thread of hope lingering in her eyes.

That hopeful thread snapped like a twig. "I didn't think so." She wouldn't have called Peyton over if she thought that it would have been that easy. She turned towards the woman, put both of her hands on her knees, and sighed. "Has Taym ever told you about the clones?"

"I helped him capture two of his clones some months back." She and Astrid, more precisely. It made her wonder if maybe she should be contacting her little sister. The little Life was friends with America as well.

Well, that made things a little easier. At least she wouldn't have to explain what the ******** they were, to Peyton. She would know to stay away. "There's a new type. And it's a lot worse, because they have all of the memories and stuff that makes us - us, I guess. Whatever it is, they're really damn good at fooling people that they're just one of the guys." Her expression gestured that she hoped Peyton could make the connection, without her saying it.

Already Pey didn't like where this conversation was headed. She kept quiet as Maebe began to explain, and that uncomfortable knot at the pit of her stomach started to grow, expanding into unease and worry. Maebe was implying that the America walking around on the island was not her America. More than implying, warning. Peyton shifted where she sat, licked her lips nervously as she let go of Maebe's hand and instead slid her palms over her shorts. If this was true--and why wouldn't it be? Peyton had no reason not to trust Maebe's judgement--then what did that mean for the Real America? Where was she? Was she alright? Was there even anyone she could ask? "Does it have an objective that you're aware of?"

"So, here's the funny thing. It does have an objective - I don't know the exact details of what it is, but it's evil and bad because of course it is." She'd breathed out a sigh of relief when Peyton figured it out on her own, and the words tumbled freely from there. "But it's fighting against it. Or - okay - it's convinced some people that it's having a change of heart. I don't actually believe it, but some do. And the leads all know about her, which means there's some dirty trick they're pulling in the background that we're not allowed to know about. SO. I need you to stay away from it. And Edith says we should have no contact with it and not do anything about it until we're told otherwise." Maebe shrugged with annoyance. "I guess they're scared we're going to piss it off and it'll go on a rampage." When she said it like that, it sounded like a legitimate problem.

Peyton just sat there and looked up at Maebe as she spoke, trying to take it all in and process it. The problem was, there was just too much to process. America was missing, and in her place was a clone. This clone had an objective, though seemed to be fighting against that objective, or at the very least had people convinced of it. And just how many people knew about this, why weren't more people talking about it? Why weren't the leads doing anything about this? Oh wait...because the leads were crazy. Right. Well, all except for Edith, maybe. As Maebe shrugged the smaller girl felt herself sag a little, then flop back completely against the bed, small hands coming up to rub at her eyes before just resting over her face. "I don't suppose anyone has any idea where America actually is?" The s**t she missed when she was too busy to keep up with twitter.
