'I should not have gotten so much stuff!' was one of her thoughts. The others were an interesting mixture of excitement over having scored so much stuff at the flash-sale, cursing the public transportation system for being on strike, and resignation over having to drag all of her purchases home by herself. True, she could've called her twin - but neither of them had a car and taxis were expensive. Not to mention Heather was likely in the middle of party-central right now (as she and her friends had been most evenings after the ruling) and wouldn't hear her phone in the first place. Not that Amanda minded - she'd done her own fair share of partying this past week.
Even still. Her arms were starting to hurt. Amanda stopped to catch her breath, looking around in a dazed stupor in the hopes that the apartment would spring up out of the ground before her. She instantly recognized the cafe she frequented - about half-way home, then. Sadly, she hadn't had time to come back to this lovely cafe since her last visit (college was sort of a bummer that way). She had texted the guy she'd met there, though - several times, in fact. Amanda sighed, pouting a little. Kaosu texted back quickly (she wondered if he was just that good at phone etiquette or if he just had nothing better to do most days - her bet was the later), but he never took her up on invitations of coming over for dinner or meeting up somewhere.
And then, as if summoned by her musings, she spotted a tuft of pastel rainbow hair out of the corner of her eye. 'Well, he's not the apartment. But, hey, it's better than nothing!' Amanda thought, calling out to her some-what friend and waving, "Kaosu?"

Kaosu kept his phone in-hand nowadays. He really didn't have much to look forward to other than his brief textual interactions with his new, uh, friend Amanda. Although the other spheres of his life seemed to be looking up since his chance encounter with the rather sparky female, he wasn't sure if that was attributed to her or just a change in his entire outlook on life. Either way, he was really glad for it. It felt nice to get out of bed once in a while. And, you know, shower.
Every few days he liked to stop back to the little cafe he'd met Amanda at - the coffee was really good, sure, but moreso to see if she'd happen to be there. At this moment, he was on his way to that exact place when he heard a familiar voice call out his name.
Glancing up from his feet, Kaosu's colorful eyes were confused at first until he realize he was, in fact, once again chance-encountering Amanda. He grinned and waved quickly before noticing how strained her expression seemed. "Oh! Uh-Amanda, do you, uh, need help?" Striding towards her, he reached out to grab some of the bags from her, wondering how on earth she had managed to purchase so much stuff in the first place. "What are you doing with all this crap, anyway?"

The relief Amanda felt when Kaosu not only recognized her, but started toward her to help, was immediate and powerful. Like an English teacher finally giving the main point of their lecture. Or a jello shot. (Don't ask.) Of course, she followed the social protocols of politeness by feigning reluctance when he reached for some of her bags. But from his expression, he seemed more amused than convinced.
"Oh, thanks!" she said, offering him a tired smile. Amanda shifted her remaining bags between her hands to even the load, sighing at the lightness. She pinned him with an inquisitive look, tilting her head with a smile. "Well! Fancy seeing you here! What've you been up to?"
When Kaosu asked her a question of his own, she had to laugh. "You know, I was asking myself the same thing! There was a flash sale today at the hobby store and I just couldn't pass it up!" Amanda poked one of the bags he was carrying, shrugging whimsically. "I'm fairly certain I bought enough yarn to have sheered a whole farm. But it's gonna start getting cold again, and if I want to make everyone scarves I'll have to start soon."Ruler of Everything (RP title used: take a shot.)

"I've been, er..." The question Amanda immediately posed of him threw him for a loop. Honestly, he wasn't quite sure how to answer, as he hadn't really been up to much. Cleaning the apartment and just trying to get out of the house, really. It was actually rather sad how little he'd been up to. "Keeping busy, you know how it is."
Glancing down at all of the bags they held between them, he looked at her incredulously. There had to be about ten bags here, all full of various craft supplies Amanda just had to pick up at that flash sale. "You're making everyone scarves? Gods, how many friends do you have?" Glancing at her, he knew there was no way this soft-spoken girl had that wide of a circle of friends. Maybe they were for her sister's friends? Amanda had mentioned that Heather ran with a lot of others. That had to be it.
After a moment, Kaosu realized they must look a bit strange. Standing in the middle of the street weighed down with craft supplies. "Were you planning on taking these somewhere, or were you just lugging them around for fun?" He assumed she intended to take them back to her apartment, but did she even live anywhere around here? What kind of nut bought this much stuff and attempted to carry it home by hand? Who on earth was he getting himself involved with?

Amanda accepted Kaosu's explanation with an understanding nod, despite the 'bullshit' detectors going off in her head. He was being evasive, yes, but they weren't good enough friends yet for her to call him out on it. Not yet, anyway. She couldn't deny how happy texting him had made her - to the point that her twin had started raising an eyebrow suspiciously whenever Amanda had her phone out.
She perked up when Kaosu asked her about her hobby, laughing in self-conscious embarrassment. "Ah, well, you know. I have to make one for my parents and Heather - and some of her friends have become mine over the semesters, I guess.", she paused, shifting her weight and glancing away. "I... I could make one for you, too. If you'd like?" Was that what you did for a new friend? Hand-make things for them? What if that was weird - it might come off too strong!
Amanda blinked when he made another statement, coughing and nodding. "Oh, uh, yes! I was taking it back to the apartment." She scowled (more like pouted) and huffed out a sigh. "Normally it wouldn't have been much of a problem to carry them on my own. But since all the public transportation workers are on strike..." She shrugged noncommittally.

Kaosu blinked, looking up at Amanda with surprise. Did she just offer to make him a scarf? Did that mean she considered them friends? Granted, they did speak on a rather regular basis, but friends? He gave her a curious look before sputtering out, "I suppose, if you have time... it does get rather cold..." After giving it a moment's thought, he self-consciously reached up to touch the top of his head. "Just, gods, nothing to match my hair, please."
At her next statement, Kaosu broke out into an unintentional, mischievous grin. Another part of his old self, creeping back again. "If you insist! Although, it is quite forward of you, Miss Rowlander, I could never say no..." Throwing her a wink, he adjusted the bags he held. "Please, lead the way! I just hope you've cleaned the place up. I do hate a mess." It was true that he was a typically clean individual, although that was only returning to him rather recently. Thank the gods for that, his own apartment had started to take on a strange smell - some sort of mix between unwashed laundry and Chinese leftovers. The amount of candles he'd gone through in the last week in an effort to expel the stench was astronomical. "Just be thankful we're not headed back to my place - you really wouldn't be able to resist the wonders of the bachelor pad." He gave her a strange look, shrugged a bit, and started walking in the direction she had seemed headed in previously.

Amanda laughed at Kaosu's request, rolling her eyes. "Oh, definitely not! No offense, but I'd have to go back and buy half the store to even try to match it!" She shook her head, already forming an idea of what she should make. 'Something neutral, yet masculine. Beige? Ew, no. Something darker... Navy perhaps?'
At his teasing, however, her pout came back in full force. "If you're going to be mean you can forget me offering you any pie or coffee when we get there!" she said haughtily, nose in the air as she turned on her heel and started again toward the apartment. That her bag smacked him as she passed was totally happenstance. Totally. And the blush on her cheeks had nothing to do with an inappropriate turn her mind had taken when imagining a 'bachelor pad'.

Kaosu glanced at Amanda in faux confusion, then looked down at all of the bags they held between them. "You mean to tell me you don't already have half the store here?" Moving his eyes back up to her, he could already see her mind working, attempting to figure out scarf patterns, he was sure. It was difficult to hide the smirk that plastered itself on his face. She looked awfully cute when she was concentrating.
Bursting out laughing, it was impossible to find her pout funny. "No pie or coffee? Now, Amanda, there's no way you'd be such a poor host!" Sarcastically, he glared at her when her bag hit him, faking an angry expression. But that expression quickly turned to one of panic, then masked concern, when his thoughts turned to what actually awaited him at the apartment. "Uh, Amanda?" Kaosu called to her, feeling his skin grow warm and anxious at his thoughts. "Is, uh... Is Heather... home?" A conscious attempt to look cool and collected was made, but a clear failure, as one could only expect from Kaosu.

Amanda glanced at Kaosu out of the corner of her eye when he started laughing, rolling her eyes at his statement. "Oh, alright, you've got me pegged." she said huffily, pout reforming "But if you keep sassing me I won't put any whipped cream on top!" It was a weak argument, a teasing remark for the sake of continuing their lighthearted bickering. Was... Was this flirting? The thought alone made her mentally pause, a frown on her lips.
Kaosu calling her name snapped Amanda out of it and she turned her head slightly to look at him. 'He looks flushed. Is he okay?' she thought, concern flashing through her. And then the reason his apprehension became clear and she laughed. "Don't worry. She's out partying right now and shouldn't be home until later." Amanda smiled, amused. "So you don't have to worry about me taking you home to meet 'mom' just yet!" she said teasingly, bumping into him lightly and laughing. It was weird, feeling this giddy. But a good weird. 'Friends are nice.'

The small frown that clouded Amanda's lips didn't go by unnoticed. Kaosu mentally flipped back through that portion of their conversation and came up dry, unable to figure out why on earth she would be frowning. He thought to ask but quickly erased that idea, sure it would only end poorly. Well, not end - things with Amanda always seemed to end well. But it would certainly make the roller coaster of the interaction much more, ah, exciting.
"Oh, thank the gods," he blurted unintentionally, with a sigh of relief and an eyeroll so big he nearly dropped one of the bags. Kaosu glanced over at Amanda and burst out laughing, unable to help himself. "Seriously, she's intimidating. I know next to nothing about her - from what I do know, she sounds incredible, but ah..." he looked around, uncomfortable again. He settled on staring at the path ahead of them. "You look up to her." His hands itched to play with his hair, a nervous habit of his he'd developed. Unfortunately, his hands were full, so he was forced to continue. "That's just, a lot. Her opinion means a lot to you and I barely have you on my side, let alone trying to get another one of you to like me," Kaosu stated, sliding a grin her way. Deciding to go for a less serious end to that statement was the way to go. He didn't want anything to feel too heavy - these craft supplies were heavy enough as it was.

"We aren't the same person, you know."
It slipped out unintentionally and Amanda fought the urge to apologize. She'd been fine with his earlier stuttering - fondly pleased, even, to know that he listened to the things she'd said and seemed to understand her loving and supporting relationship with her sister despite his own issues with his sisters. And then he'd proceeded to stick his foot in his mouth with the joking last statement. (She was also learning this was a common problem when talking to him.)
Honestly, growing up with a twin had been difficult even for she and her sister. When they weren't being mixed up or solicited for threesomes, they still had to deal with people brushing off their quirks and personalities as one and the same. Some people were even obnoxious or outraged about having that little myth shattered. Amanda sighed, giving Kaosu a look as they continued walking side by side. "Heather gets to make her own opinions about you. I already have mine." she said, allowing her eyes to slide back onto the sidewalk in front of them. Honestly, the first meeting between Kaosu and her twin would have to happen soon.

Oh, gods. Nothing with Amanda could ever be easy, could it? His face flushed with minor irritation as he scrambled to reverse his earlier wording. "No no no no," Kaosu spat out, fighting the urge to facepalm. Not that it was all that difficult, considering the cargo would've made it rather hard to do in the first place. "That's not what I meant at all. Must you always expect the worst of me?" He shook his head, trying to gather the right words to explain it to her, mentally blaming his poor use of inflection on the misunderstanding. Then again, nothing he really ever said to Amanda seemed to come out right. Maybe it was her fault? He shook his head slightly, remembering himself. Perhaps her presence caused it, but it was all definitely his fault.
"I know you're not the same person. What I meant was, like, another one of the pair of you. From what I hear Heather's a great deal easier to please, I'd guess. But getting you to tolerate me has been tough enough without trying to get your twin on board. Does that... make sense?" Kaosu was pretty sure he was sweating at this point, and for no good reason. Probably the summer heat and the, uh, exercise he was getting doing all this... walking and bag carrying. Yes, that had to be it.

Amanda raised a brow at Kaosu's flailing, scowl still affixed to her lips after his halting explanation. His words bothered her still, but frankly she found it too bothersome to call out his poor language. She huffed out a sigh, shaking her head in defeat. While she normally found their spats exhilarating, this one in particular felt... painful. Too close. And she wasn't really feeling up to the idea of bickering with him about it, anyway.
"As you say." she mumbled, fighting the urge to flinch as his words bounced around in her head. ''Heather's a great deal easier to please', huh?' she thought miserably, biting her lip. Wasn't that always the case? Heather just shone more brightly, was more bubbly and could socialize easier - always had. Through no fault of her own, of course, it's just how Heather was. Siblings got compared all the time - but it was different for twins. It was silly of her to expect Kaosu to understand, and yet-
'Why can't you be more like your sister?'
Amanda shook herself out of the forming funk, taking a deep breath and looking back at Kaosu. She pinned a cheerful smile on her face. "Beyond that, how are your sisters? Last time you texted me about them, they were dealing with something difficult."

It took a great deal of resolve for Kaosu not to hound on the subject. His desire to keep apologizing was overwhelming, although he didn't quite understand how deep his comment had cut her. He simply wanted her to be okay. But, examining her facial expression out of the corner of his eye, Kaosu was sure that continuing down that road would only make things exponentially worse. And he did have a habit of doing that already - best to avoid it when he could.
At the change of subject, Kaosu rolled his eyes dramatically and shook his head. "Those two are always dealing with something difficult." It was true - they were eternally busy fighting for "the greater good" (or so they said) - and he rarely saw them because of it. "You know, when I was little I was always really jealous of them. They inherited the same powers that our dad has, and I got nothing. I, uh..." Lifting his hand gingerly, bags still clutched, he scratched at his head a bit. "Mom's a goddess? I don't know if, uh, you knew that. Yeah. But. She's a goddess and Dad has powers and I got nothing. None of it! How fair was that?" Kaosu laughed, remembering himself as a naive little kit, outraged at his relative normalcy. "But gods, I don't envy them one bit now. It's a bit of a burden, from what Karahi's told me. Always having to be on guard, having all this responsibility to protect others... Exhausting. All of it." He shrugged, realizing how much he'd be talking, blushing a bit. "So, uh, I'd guess they're doing relatively well. As well as they can be, anyway." Letting out a deep breath, Kaosu was pretty positive that was the most long-winded speech he'd given anybody since before Lucrecia left. His face involuntarily scrunched up at the thought, but only for a moment. Things were getting better, after all.
