Otto replied to Tweets that night as he walked back from a duty shift. He'd taken a daring step, outing himself on the public domain of Twitter. However, he'd never truly realized just how badly it would turn out for a certain red head.

His pace slowed as he received his Direct Messages, replying back and trying to ammend any hurt feelings. According to Rep, Otto had been screwing with him. Otto knew the man had been flirting all that time, but never thought for a minute that his banter back at him would be considered teasing. Baiting.

And now? Rep didn't like him anymore. It shouldn't matter. He wasn't interested in him. But.. he'd thought they were friends.

Otto's expression feel, and he felt a few things. Guilt. He felt badly for possibly leading someone on without meaning to. He felt hurt for being told as such; for being cut off from talking to him because of it. Mad for being called a f*****t of all things.

Quote:

••• No that you are a poof, that you were one and ******** led me on anyway. Whatever idk what I'm still even talking to you about.

William Hughes
••• Have a nice ******** life, you faggots are all the same.

It was normal Rep slurs, but it hurt. A lot. The blond sulked as he dragged his feet down the hallway. Maybe he'd go see Chance. Maybe he'd just go home and crawl under his own covers and sulk by himself. He was undecided.

Until someone called behind him...

"Kesha! Hey girl---" Otto turned with a glare.

"Yikes! Yoooou're not a chic. Sorry, the hair threw me off." The unknown man patted Otto's shoulder and jogged away.

And now Otto was furious.

•••

Chance's door swung open, and Otto stormed in. "SCISSORS. NOW."

During the time that the Twitter incident had gone down, Chance had been already been off from his own duty shift, and was relaxing back in his room with his sketchpad in hand. He hadn't thought much about the exchange with Rep, only a sense of welling pleasure that Otto had made the decision he had about outing himself - and their relationship by extension. And after the conversation had died away, Chance had set the phone down and gone back to his drawing, which happened to be of a dinosaur, of all things.

He had not, if he was honest, expected the door to his room to suddenly burst open with a crack. Chance jumped, a jagged line from his pencil cutting across his absentminded doodle as he turned to look at his new guest, eyebrows raised in mild surprise.

"Good evening," he said, setting down the sketchpad and sliding his legs off of the side of the bed. "Or, I suppose I should say...not really good evening..?"

Otto was given a bemused look as Chance padded obediently to the desk.

"You okay? What's up?"

"Everything is stupid." He grumbled stubbornly, trying to mask his pain with irritation and anger. The hair comment probably wouldn't have hurt as much had he not been hurt already.

"Some d**k thought I was a girl cuzza my hair. So yeah. Scissors.." Maybe cutting it was drastic. Maybe a bandana would suffice. But even with a baseball cap, the long hair would remain. Ah.. he hadn't worn a cap in ages.

He raised an eyebrow, but didn't say anything just yet, Chance sliding open his desk drawer. He rummaged around for a few seconds and then pulled out a pair of silver scissors, as well as the chair, gesturing for Otto to sit down in it.

"I know I call you beautiful," said Chance, a little dryly, "but I've never thought of you as a girl."

"Good." He grumbled, sitting in the chair with a thump. His posture was sulky, even if his face looked pink with frustration. "Cuz I ain't a girl."

And he wasn't a f*****t either.

He reached out, gently sliding his fingers through Otto's hair without making a move to cut it just yet.

"Did something happen?" Chance asked casually.

"Maybe." He grumbled.

"...yes." He admitted, shoulders slumping. Rather than be belligerent about it any longer, he got out his phone, opening up the messages he and Rep had sent.

With a frown, he handed over the phone.

"I guess it's dumb to think a guy like that wouldn't go and be such a d**k to me after this." He grumbled after some time passed for Chance to read it. "I just thought he was my friend... is all.." And he had a mixed spell of luck when it came to his taste in friends.

"I really shoulda known he'd get pissy.. He's an a**, and he only likes himself anyway. Him or Harrison are the only butts who can do no wrong... A total a**..."

Chance reached out and slipped the phone from Otto's fingers, brows drawing together as he squinted at the screen. It took him a second to realize what he was reading, but comprehension dawned, and Chance gave a slow nod as he scrolled down to read the rest, thumb smoothing over the phone's surface.

"So...Rep thought you were straight all this time, and...flirted? I assume? And you were just you back?" Chance passed the phone back to Otto, his other hand resting on the back of the chair. A hum of thought escaped him as he mulled things over.

"Are you disappointed that he ditched you as a friend, or that he's apparently double standard-ing the concept of not being straight, since he's got a husband and he's calling you a f*****t?" he asked, the word tasting bad on his tongue and making him wince slightly. "Or both?"

Otto gave a nod. He'd never intended to flirt. He wasn't good at it. He just liked bantering with the man. And sure, he liked to be complimented, even if Rep's tended to border on backhanded most days.

"Both." He murmured in a low voice. "It's dumb that it's bothering me, I guess. He weren't a close friend or nuthin. It's just.. all the times I cheered him up, or fought to make him keep true to himself.. now he's sayin' I just did it to make fun of'im. And that's.. ********' insulting." He frowned deeper, ringing his hands angrily.

"He's just a goddamn self righteous twit!"

"It's not dumb if it bothers you," said Chance, tapping a finger idly against the scissors as he ran a hand through his own shaggy head of curls. "I mean...I've only met the guy once or twice before, talked to him on Twitter, he seemed pretty cool, but even if you're not close..."

He trailed off musingly. "It's kind of...his mind must work in a different way if he thinks that you were making fun of him when you were trying to cheer him."

Chance frowned slightly, mostly out of thought. "It kinda sounds like the problem is a lot more than you, though, really."

"You're probably right." Otto murmured, letting out a slow sigh as he tried to let it go. "It's him.. he's twisted." His past, his personality, all skewed and contorted. He'd pretend the messages never came. He'd never look them over again. But he'd still have to deal with him, eventually. Avoid talking with him when he was on twitter. Avoid poking at him like he used to.

He ran a hand through his hair. Ah.. right. Cutting it. Did he really want to? Or had it been a distraction?

"I still kinda wanna cut it." He said suddenly. "Maybe mostly in the back. It's too sticky in the summer."

He smoothed his hand idly through Otto's hair, momentarily lost in thought. A few questions were still there at the forefront of his mind, but Chance wasn't quite certain it was his place to ask them, so he refrained for now, instead just focusing on Otto.

"So you just...keep doing what you've been doing," said Chance, bending to kiss the top of his head. "You keep moving with your life. You could still say hi to him, if you wanted. You know, just still let him know you're his friend, even if he refuses to see it."

His fingers trailed along the bottom of Otto's hair, Chance eying the length curiously.

"How short are we talking here?" he asked.

"I don't wanna talk to him." He grumbled, vindictive to the end. His feelings were hurt, and he was in no mood to mend them yet.

"Have you ever even cut hair before?" Chance was holding scissors, so he probably intended to try. Otto, earlier, had intended to chop it off himself by grabbing a fistful and guessing. So really... it could be worse.

"I cut Claude's several months ago," said Chance mildly. "and it turned out just fine. I'll be careful, don't worry. You want just a few inches off, then?"

He was a little sad to see the length go - running his fingers through Otto's hair was one of his favored past times, after all, and he allowed himself one last run through - but he did have to admit that it was very hot. That, and if Otto's insecurities ran towards being considered effeminate, then he'd do what he could to make him feel better about himself.

"I'm sorry about Rep, though."

"Yeah, just a few." He didn't care for it too short, like it had been some years back. However, now that he was feeling overly self-conscience with it's current length..

"Me too." Maybe it was better he not talk with Rep anymore. Even though the guy was a sleezeball, he'd been decent when it mattered. Still, if this was all it took for the man to turn on him, then yes. For the best. It wasn't like many people liked that man anyway. Probably for good reason.
