Friendship was such a strange word. It seemed like the more it was said, the less meaning it held…and honestly…Millicent was starting to doubt some of hers…you could say that friendship meant a lot, but who really knew. There was one friend though, one she knew she could always count on…so when she had a black eye and was still slightly reeling from breaking someone’s nose, of course the person she went to was Jett.

The teenager made her way to the antique shop and idly entered it, glancing around at the different merchandise, just waiting for the blonde to notice her…because of course he was here today.

He was always there…that’s what made him such a great friend to her.

She paused, taking a moment to look at a pretty awesome looking lamp, and finally just got bored of waiting for him to come find her…so she went to find him. “Jett. Where the heck are you, man? I need to talk to you, seriously. It’s a serious talk I need.”

Her black eye would be evidence of that when he took a look at her, she was sure.

Jett had been engaged in a rousing game of 'poke the cat off of the top shelf and away from the four hundred dollar antique doll' when he heard the door open. The cat was too high up for Jett to get without a stool, and that was just too much effort. The cat was purring, but Jett gave it a few more impatient pokes with mini golf club he'd been playing with before he huffed and turned his attention to the customer.

…Who was not quite a customer.

"Millie," he greeted, surprised at first by her words and then her appearance.

He turned to face her, cat thoroughly forgotten. "—What happened to your face, were you brawling or something? Is that the serious conversation or is it something else?" He cut to the chase and raised a brow as he scanned her quickly for any other visible injuries. "—You all right?"

The girl pursed her lips and gave Jett a skeptical look. “I mean, I did get into a fight. Honestly, you should see the other guy. I’m…I think I broke his nose. Like, there was this nasty crunch when I got him on it, and then his blood got all over my hand…but you see, I suppose I’m pretty lousy at ducking, so I was hoping maybe to get some lessons from you. Since you know. You’re a guy. And I guess you know how to fight. Maybe.”

She shrugged. “I’m fine, I guess. Mom’s not too happy with me, I told her I ran into something, and I’m about four hundred percent sure that she doesn’t believe me so uh…whoops.”

Millie just sighed, tucking some hair behind her ear. “Eh. Anyway. How have you been? I’ve missed you. You doing okay? Like, not getting into much trouble, right?”

She was trying to be all cool about everything…but she was more than a little shaken that she had really…broken someone’s nose…that was just…

It had been so unexpected.

Jett looked at her for a long moment before he snorted. "And you guess I know how to fight? Millie—you know I used to box, don't you? Like, competitively. You know I typically won, right? Like, trophies, awards—cash prize? If you want lessons on how to fight, yeah. Just don't tell your mom, I don't want her hounding me. Or calling my mom."

He shifted positions; it was a difficult balance because Millie wasn't quite a kid anymore, but she had never been one who wanted attention and praise in the same way that all the other ladies in his life did. She was tough and he had to walk a careful line between not being too hard and not being too soft with her. He meant well, and wanted her to be well, but he didn't want to insult her by insinuating she was weak.

He knew plenty of girls who hit like men, and if Millie wanted to be one, he wasn't going to let some other jackoff teach her.

"…Who's been hounding me enough as is. Raven and I are doing well. Got a due date for the baby, so if you want to come over and poke Raven's stomach while it swells up, you're invited. I mean, don't tell her I told you to do that, but she's got this spot where she's ticklish and I swear, you poke it long enough, she starts snorting."

He paused and gave Millie a stern look. "Don't tell her I told you that, either."

Jett was trying to keep the conversation casual, light, but something about Millie was off and he didn't like it, so he moved behind the counter and opened the cooler he'd shoved under there. Withdrawing two sodas, he set one on the counter and pushed it towards her as he opened his own. "…That is quite the shiner you go there, Mil. Sounds like you gave that guy a run for his money. Broken noses heal, you know. I've broken a few. Had mine broken once. Can't even tell," he said, and flashed a grin to showcase what he still deemed a perfect face. He tried to keep it easygoing, but there was a seriousness in his voice that even a smile and a joke didn’t hide. "Come on over here and sit down. I'll teach you whatever you want to know, but I want to know that you're okay, first."

There were the little things that he'd picked up, either before he'd known what the Dark Mirror Court or after, it all sort of blended together. Some people were fighters because they wanted to be, and some were because they had to be. Either way, no one needed to be dealing with demons on their own. "You sleeping okay? Eating all right?"

“I know you were good before, I am your like, best friend after all. Of course I know that.” She listened to him prattle on, giving a little smile at the bit about poking Ravens stomach…that was something that she just might have to try one of these days. “I’m glad you guys are doing so good. I can’t wait to see the baby when it’s born, I want to pinch its toes. Ugh. Baby toes are almost as cute as pig toes.”

There was a small glimmer of the old Millie, but it was snuffed almost at once, replaced by that adult-esque façade that she was trying very hard to maintain.

She wasn’t a chibi anymore, after all…she really had a planet to protect. There wasn’t any more time for games. Training was over…this was the big leagues.

“I’m eating fine…do you think I would be this tall if I wasn’t? And I’m sleeping pretty fine too. I mean. Sometimes I get more sleep than other times, but hey. That’s just life. And I start high school this year too…that’s kind of making me a little nervous. Maybe. But I’m just going to Meadowview, there’s nothing special about Meadowview.”

She shrugged again, taking a drink of the soda. “Yeah. I did give him a run for his money. He won’t mess with me anymore. And the best part about the black eye was the fact he didn’t even get to see that he hurt me at all. It’s pretty great.”

"Oh, yeah? Good for you," Jett said, cracking a grin. "You're a regular old badass now, aren't you? High school'll be a breeze. You've grown up a lot since we first met."

He shrugged, as if he were trying to brush aside his emotions. He was proud of her; she'd come a long way, and worked very hard to weasel herself into his life. She'd made a pretty big dent in his heart, and even with the age difference, she was probably among his absolute most trusted friends.

"You're not three feet tall anymore, so that's a plus. Guys'll probably dig you. You'll be rejecting them left and right," he said, chuckling. "—Girls, too, probably. This day and age, it seems like everybody's trying new things. Anyway—the point is, you're a catch. Brave, strong, loyal. You're even pretty good looking. You'll do fine, don't worry. High school's not even hard. Make friends with a couple of geeky boys, they'll do you're homework for you if you bat your at 'em."

“Well, for your information, Jett. I was never three feet tall, at least in the time I’ve known you I was never three feet tall, you jerk. And another thing. I sort of might kind of maybe have a boy I like, but he’s…”

She paused, choosing her words wisely. It wouldn’t do well to just blurt out that he was a chibi, she wasn’t sure if Jett was involved in the war or what, but honestly…she couldn’t trust him if she didn’t know so…of course it was time to improvise. Just like with everything else in her life it seemed.

“He’s just…not as mature as me, though I suppose that’s the same with all boys. They don’t get mature until they’re nearly thirty. I’m sure you’re pushing close to thirty by now, aren’t you, Jett? I mean, you have a kid on the way and everything…what’s it like, being an old man? Should I get you a cane for your birthday?”

Jett's brow twitched faintly and he glanced down at her again. "If you get me a cane, I'll beat you with it." He reached for a sticky note, balled it up and then flicked it at her. "I'm not old, either, so watch it. Anyway, you be careful with that boy of yours or you might wind up with a baby, too."

He gave her his best impression of 'stern fatherly look' before he just laughed and shook his head.

"Though, I admit, I'm kind of interested to see what type of kid got your attention. What's he do that's so immature, make fart jokes and interrupt you all the time or something? Or, do you mean, he still sleeps with a night light and a teddy bear?"

Millie huffed at the thought of getting pregnant. Oh hell no. She wasn’t going to be like one of those sluts from the television. Ugh. Even if her own mother had been a young mom…she hadn’t been that young. “Ugh, Jett how could you even say that. Do you think I’m a slut or something? Ugh. No. He’s a nice kid. But yeah…I’m pretty sure he still needs a night light, and maybe it would be a stuffed cow, not a teddy bear, but…yeah I can totally see him doing that. With like, one of those blankets that are puppets too. He’s so silly. My Orin.”

The faintest flush crept up into the teen’s cheeks and she cleared her throat. “Um. Anyway. I came here to learn how to fight, not to talk about stupid things like boys. If you keep distracting me, I’ll buy you a walker instead of a cane, and I’ll get you some other old man things…because you’re so old. You’re going to be a daddy…that’s so…dumb…”

She looked away. “Dads are stupid. Useless jerks is all they are. If you turn out like that, I’ll ******** break your nose, you know? Don’t be a loser, Jett.”

Watching Millie's face turn red made a smile come to Jett's; he might have laughed if she hadn't changed the subject.

For a moment, he was silent, and then he released a slow sigh, shrugging. His eyes were on the soda he held, and while he sloshed the liquid about in the can, he eventually just set it down.

"Pretty colorful language, Millie. Makes me feel like maybe I can stop censoring myself."

She had her own father issues, and while he hadn't explicitly ever talked about his own, he couldn’t help but figure anyone who knew him well enough had to know something was off. The single mother and his absolutely disdain for most father figures was probably a good giveaway.

"…I guess I'll try to be okay. Not really sure how all that stuff's supposed to work. I guess I keep meaning to talk to Rave or my mother about it, but," he shrugged again, and didn't sound like he had much conviction.

It was a sore topic and he didn't know how to bring it up. Even right now, while he was excited about having a child with Raven, he couldn’t really think of himself as a father. It seemed like that was just setting himself up for failure.

“I can say whatever the ******** I ******** want you little b***h a** punk. I’m fourteen now, plus I’m going into highschool so. I have to be ready. You can say what you want in front of me. Nothing shocks me now, I’m all grown up.”

The girl just looked at Jett for a long, long moment, finally hugging him tightly. “I think you might be okay. Just…try real hard okay? If not for your kid, then do it for yourself. Don’t let the baby grow up like us okay? It sucks. We get through it, but it sucks…”

She pulled away and glanced at the clock on the wall, heaving a heavy sigh. “I guess we’ll have to put off fight practice for some other day…I have to get going…Mom is making me have a curfew ever since I got the shiner, so. Whoo hoo. Hooray for overprotective moms, right?”

Millie gave a little wave and made her way to the front of the shop, pausing for a moment. “Hey, Jett. Next year when I get my drivers permit, you better be ready to help teach me to drive. Okay have fun, bye.”

And then she was gone.

Jett stared after where the girl had disappeared to; she had her own way of getting over her personal problems, and she had her own way of giving him a roller coaster of emotions. For a few seconds longer, he stared at the door she had exited from—and then he just shook his head and laugh.

Lifting the soda to his lips once more, he took a long swig and held it.

He didn't want to disappoint her.

He didn't want to disappoint anyone.

He just didn't know where to start for this one, and he was running out of time.
