A lot had happened since the botched saving of that squire. He had met a very cool cat and gone up to his wonder…he had been on a very nice date with a very nice guy in a very nice apron…but no matter what it was that he was doing…he was still upset.
He could have done more. Should have done more…didn’t do enough. The things were eating him away, and it was getting harder to keep smiling the way he did.
Tonight he really didn’t want to be disturbed…he just wanted to wallow for a little while and kick himself in the back of the head, all while just…feeling bad.
He hadn’t had a time to feel bad yet. He hadn’t had time to get it out of his system…it had been just run run run, get away from the thoughts…tonight was about him.
That was…at least until he had some sort of vision or something. Just out of the corner of his eye…the corrupted squire. Ugh. Swiftly the knight shut his eyes and placed his hands over them. “Go away. I don’t want to see you. Or think about you. I get it. I ******** up. Don’t ******** haunt me.”

Since his corruption, Ashanite had avoided the places he used to patrol. He wasn't entirely sure he was ready to play the lying game with people he was already familiar with, who might recognize a chance in his voice or his inflection that betrayed his dishonesty. Best to get more confident in his act before he started trying it on the people he really needed to sell.
But a handsome stranger who had been present and close at his corruption? Right in the middle of it, even? That was perfect. He couldn't recall meeting the blond Knight before then, which meant they likely hadn't known each other well, and that meant this would be that much easier.
"Haunt you? That's a bit much, I don't think we've run into each other before this," he said, and his tone was dry. Good, this man felt some guilt for what happened to him - that was perfect. That was exactly the in he needed.

Whisler paused. Hallucinations didn’t normally talk back…especially when you didn’t know what their voice was supposed to sound like…the hell.
He lowered his hand and swallowed, glancing back at the Squire…no…Captain that stood behind him. “Oh. So you’re not just a ******** up daydream. You’re actually there. I uh. Yeah. No sorry. We hadn’t met before. Not really. Er. Not at all. I didn’t even introduce myself to you.”
I just ******** up and failed in saving you. That’s all.
The knight stood up, expression guarded. “I’m Whisler, Knight of Polaris. And I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to save you. I tried, though. I did try.”
He shrugged as Ashanite mentioned haunting, not really wanting to get into any of it. It just wasn’t worth the effort.

"Not a daydream, unfortunately enough," the Captain said, and he took a few more steps forward. He never bothered with his weapons - they were certainly more efficient than a silly pomegranate or a wand, but he wanted to be neither efficient nor threatening now.
"I don't think there's much anyone could have done," he said, and he purposely drew himself in a little. "I should have known as soon as Laurelite got there I was doomed. It was a mistake to try and fight. But I..." He swallowed.
"No one died, did they? I didn't doom anyone else?" Maybe Whisler wouldn't know, but that was fine, he looked more sympathetic in the asking. "I'm Ploutonion. They want me to take another name, but sometimes you have to draw your lines where you can."

Whisler shook his head. “No, no I don’t think anyone died…and I don’t think anyone was corrupted, but, Ploutonion…” He reached out, taking the captain’s hand and squeezing it lightly. “We can help you, you know. They…I…”
The knight swallowed, not knowing if it was really wise to mention it, but knowing he had to. He was stupid not to. This was someone who was snatched by the darkness, someone who hadn’t wanted this.
Someone he could trust. “I was polluted by chaos too…I was pulled out, brought back to the light. I was part of the Negaverse…I know people who can bring you back to us, you don’t have to stay as you are…I can help…”
He had to help. Or else he would never forgive himself.
If only he had done more, maybe this situation wouldn’t be happening…Ploutonion would have been himself and never been turned into the person he had become…

Ashanite swallowed, looked briefly stricken, even when Whisler took his hand. "I know I can go back, but..." He looked away, refusing to meet the Knight's eyes, made himself look as desperately sad as he could. "I'm afraid," he confessed breathlessly. This was the most important part - make himself seem desperate and pathetic.
"They found me once. They could again." He ran a thumb over Whisler's hand, shaking a little.
"And I don't...I don't want to think about what they'd do to someone they had to drag back twice. Skip the dragging back and kill me, probably."

Whisler’s heart felt like it was breaking and he wrapped his free arm around Ploutonion. His own thumb ran over the back of the captain’s hand. “I wouldn’t let them. I wouldn’t let them have you again…I’d rather die than see you polluted with chaos again…but…I understand…”
His lips lightly brushed against the other male’s cheek and he sighed, pressing as close as he could, trying to be comforting, trying just to…to be there.
“Honestly I’ve been terrified that someone was going to find out I left…and was going to try and drag me back…I’ve been pretty careful to keep it as much of a secret as I could but…but it’s a real fear, and I understand…” His voice dropped to a whisper. “But when you decide to come home, I promise that I’ll protect you. Nobody will touch you.”

Ashanite sank against Whisler, bending just a little to rest his face on the shorter man's shoulder. He let himself be comforted, tried not to be too pleased - because this was working out far better than he could have imagined.
A tiny sigh passed his lips when Whisler pressed his lips to his cheek. "You've been lucky, if no one came looking for you." He said. "I don't...think my General would let me go so easily." He rested his free hand against Whisler's chest, fingers gently brushing against the front of his uniform.
"But thank you. I'm...if I ever do decide to leave, I'm glad I'd be able to lean on you for help."

His heart was beating harder than he had thought it could, especially from someone he hardly knew…but, maybe it was just the guild of what he hadn’t been able to do for him…and maybe it was something else.
“I’ll be here for you, always. If you need anything, and I mean anything…just find me.” The poor guy just seemed so afraid and lost and…
Oh god.
Whislers lips brushed the former squire’s head and he tightened the grip he had on him. “I’ll do anything for you. I promise. I’ll be whatever you need. It’s the very, very least I can do…I should have saved you…I’m just so sorry…”

Ashanite nodded, closing his eyes briefly. "I'll remember your name, and I will finds a way to contact you, if I ever...need help," he said, almost breathlessly. As much as he hated being genuinely vulnerable in front of anyone, being able to fake it like this, and to have it work, made him feel so much better about this entire ruse.
Was he an absolute, utter b*****d for doing this? Moreso for enjoying it? Absolutely.
He leaned just the slightest bit away from Whisler, so he could look up, purposely blowing his eyes wide and doe-y. "Thank you, so much, Whisler," he said, tightening his grip on the man's uniform.
