Name: Janel Age: 13 Gender: male Sexual Orientation: heterosexual Craft/Rank: Candidate
History: Janel was born in Trine, the only son of riders J'nes and J'len. He was born turning the conflict between the Revolutionists and Trine, but his family moved to Euclid when he was still a toddler so that J'nes could take up a position as Weyrlingmaster. Janel barely understood the Wherwars, since they were over by about his 6th Turn, and Euclid was less affected by them than other places. There was sometimes a tension in the air that he didn't understand, but his dad was careful to make sure their home always felt safe and welcoming. Then a few Turns later, Euclid was disbanded and his family moved to Trine.
Janel was happy wherever he was. He made friend quickly and enjoyed exploring wherever they were living. Once they went back to Trine, the Weyr seemed completely new to him since they'd left when he was so young. He had a few years of running around the place with the other weyrbrats and making new friends before he reached Candidate age. Then his parents gave him the option of becoming a Candidate or not, and he emphatically chose to become one. He loved his parents' dragons and wanted to bond one, too.
Description: Janel has inherited both his parent's height, and already stands an inch or two taller than most kids his age. His brown hair is most often seen tousled and messy from running around and playing with the other kids. He's got his mom's grey eyes, his dad's big nose, and is of average build. His skin is tanned and he's picked up a scattering of freckles from being outside in the sun so much.
Personality: Janel is sure he's going to do great things...though he doesn't know what at yet. He's tried a little bit of everything around the weyr, popping in just about everywhere he's allowed to see how stuff is done and lend a hand, but he hasn't decided what he likes best yet. He does know he wants a dragon, and is sure one will choose him sooner or later. But as his parents have told him often enough, you can't choose your dragon; if one is meant for you, it will find you. So although he daydreams about riding a dragon, he picks a different color every time. Most of his imaginative games involve pretend dragon riding; hunting Rogue Queens on an atypical, leading a Wing on a big dragon, flying a daring search-and-rescue through a narrow mountain pass on a small dragon, and so on. Whatever he pretends to be doing, he and his dragon are the very best. He has no back-up plan if he doesn't Impress; nothing he's seen in the weyr comes close to being as interesting as dragon riding.
He is so certain that he's going to be great that he never backs down from a challenge. Any time someone proposes a game or contest to him, he jumps right in. Of course he doesn't win everything, since he never thinks about whether he even knows how to do what's being asked. He's sure he'll pick it up. He does learn things quickly, but he by no means masters them immediately. Usually when he jumps into a contest with no proper knowledge, he'll learn fast enough to make a good showing for a beginner, but still loses whatever it is. When he wins, he cheers for himself, but is a very good winner, showing good sportsmanship and congratulating his competitors on a good try. When he loses, he's grumpily frustrated for a time, and that tends to prompt a brief but intense bout of practicing whatever it was he'd lost at. In that short time he's extremely motivated, but he soon loses interest and moves onto other things.
He's chatty, cheerful and friendly. Combine that with his eagerness to join into any game under the sun, and he tends to make friends easily. He's also willing to help out with stuff when asked. Even chores, though they're a lot less fun, and he tends to get bored if he has to do the same thing over and over. When he gets bored, his mind wanders (usually to daydreams of dragon riding), but if someone reminds him of his task he gets right back to it...until he gets board and daydreams again, or it's finished and he sneaks off before he gets set a similar task. The best way to keep him on task is to give him a variety of short, different tasks, or to make the job into a competition somehow.
Pros: confident, competitive, adaptable Cons: indecisive, rushes into things, loses focus quickly
