C'tis nodded to his fellow Warden and turned to leave the practice ring. He ached from exertion and sweat was making his shirt stick to his back, a good session. After returning his weighted wooden practice blade to the rack he stripped off his shirt and headed over to a nearby water butt to splash his face and scoop up handfuls of water to quench his thirst.
It had been a good day so far today but an odd one, it wasn't a rest day and there was no Fall expected yet he wasn't in wing drills. Having volunteered to join a newly forming wing had left him in limbo, he wasn't really sure what to do with the rest of today now he'd done as much in the way of weapons drills as was sensible. Go for a fly with Mal and practice some manoeuvres? Yes, that sounded good, but he'd give himself a bit of a break first.

Her day had certainly been a busy one. There were meetings to be had (most brief), familiarizing herself with the other wings, learning who the shaff was being put in her own wing. That thought made her lips twitch. Her own wing! Ha! Take that, R'lav! Oh if only the man were here so she could joyfully rub that one in his arrogant face. But truthfully, she had no idea if the man still lived or had died. Nor did she really care.
That's not very nice, Mine. Erinaeth informed her from where she awaited her rider.
He was not a nice man. Arlii countered, spotting the crimson just a little ways up. She walked with a purpose and held a small sheaf of paper with names scribbled down on them. Names she was determined to meet one on one and evaluate. If she was going to be the Wingleader of a new wing, she had to know her wingmates.
"Eri, will you get in contact with... C'tis' dragon... Malcarreth?" The names sounded familiar. She couldn't place her finger on why. Maybe one of the other wingleaders had mentioned them? Arlii shrugged. "Make a request for them to meet us out by the vacant field for wing practice."
You could at least sound excited to meet one of your wing. The crimson snorted, turning to regard her rider before lowering so the lithe woman could climb on her back. Malcarreth? Mine wishes to meet with yours. We will be heading to the vacant field where wing practices will be held!

Malcarreth said to his rider, rising from his sand wallow to stretch out before heading to pick him up from the training area. Malcarreth replied,
C'tis sighed and put his sweaty shirt back on, he was glad that things were moving along but he could have done with a break before having to act semi-polite to his new fearless leader. No rest for the wicked. Malcarreth landed a short way off and C'tis gave his face a lash splash, splashed some water over his shirt too to cool himself off better, and climbed up onto the blue's back.
As it was only a little skim over the rooftops to the wing practice field in question there was no need to bother with riding straps; Malcarreth made the take off gentle and the subsequent landing light. Once the tiny blue had trotted to a halt C'tis slid lightly to the ground. He'd heard that Arlii was a decent sort and the wing motto she'd picked appealed to him so perhaps this wouldn't be too bad.

We'll see you soon, then! The crimson probably sounded a little too enthusiastic. But she was excited to have a new dragon to meet and gossip with!
Arlii just rolled her eyes at her dragon as they landed in the training field. She slid from Eri's back and gave a curious look around them. This was, if she had to guess, the practice field they would be using. It didn't look too bad and it wasn't butted up against the others practice areas. She lifted a hand to shade her gaze as she looked out in the distance where she could see one of the other wings.
Soon. That would be them soon. But there was the little issue of her being a new wingleader and needing to learn who her wingmates were. Which was why C'tis had gotten the unfortunate please of being the first.
Here they come, Mine. Erinaeth gave a cheery rumble to Malcarreth as he landed nearby. Wecome! Thank you for coming and bringing yours.
Arlii watched the blue carefully, looking for any injuries or oddities he may have had or gained. But the blue looked to be quite nice. Younger than Eri, if she recalled. Her gaze shifted to his rider, as the man slid to the ground. Sturdy footed. Good. Not one that smiled. This made her lips twitch. "Greetings, C'tis and Malcarreth." She said lightly, giving them a wave. "I appreciate you both sparing me some of your time." There was no hesitation in her step as she approached C'tis, though there may have been a glint of mischief in her eyes. She stuck out her hand when close enough to the man. "Not that there's any need for it, but I'm Arlii and that's Erinaeth. We're both pleased to meet you."

Well, weren't they quite the cheery pair? C'tis nodded to Arlii and reached out to clasp her hand firmly but without any attempt to grip-crush, he wanted to get along well in his new wing so being obtuse would be stupid. "C'tis and Malcarreth," he replied, shrugging and adding; "not that there's any need for that either. So, leader of a brand new wing, how does that feel then?" Was she cocky? Had her promotion given her an inflated opinion of herself, or had she always had one perhaps? Maybe wingleaders did he found; ego and a desire for recognition was probably what drove a lot of them to try to get into such a shaffing unpleasant job, that or a frantic desire to prove their worth. < > Malcarreth pointed out to Erinaeth without rancour and with a faintly amused huff of breath. <> As he spoke Malcarreth looked Erinaeth over thoughtfully. She was scarred from the wars like so many but she had fewer fresher scars than he, unsurprising given their respective ranks. If a Warden didn't have a good scar or two to brag of it would be difficult for them to be taken seriously, and no amount of 'well I dodged' would prevent that. Not to say that he got himself beaten up on purpose, only that he was quite pleased that the hits he had taken had healed well and scarred prettily.

A fairly neutral grip, though strong. So he had restraints. Could control himself. She liked that. And gave him a little sly smile that hinted at the fact he may have just passed some sort of test he wasn't aware of. She folded her arms casually across her chest and gave him a curious look at his question. It wasn't like she didn't expect to be asked it. More like she wasn't quite sure how to properly answer yet.
"Well, it doesn't feel much different yet, to be honest. Like it hasn't fully sunk in. But there is also excitement." She looked out towards the other wing drilling in the distance. "Times have changed, but I very much believe that there are those still just as passionate as I am about doing our duties as dragonriders." Arlii looked back at C'tis. "I want all of you ready to work hard and equally. Because if we can't do it, well." The crimsonrider gave a small shrug. "Guess we aren't very good dragonriders then."
Looking over the bluerider, Arlii could see that he too, had gone through a lot over the turns. "What do you expect out a your wing?" She asked curiously.
Erinaeth chuffed in amusement. Well you could have but then I'd be very sad and not have gotten to meet you! Because that was the most important thing, obviously. I'm glad you're looking forward to it! Mine hopes to do the wing justice and be a good leader for them. She had faith in her bonded. The crimson just hoped everyone else would too. What was your other wing like? Ours was always fighting amongst themselves. It was very hard to do things uniformly.

What was that sly little smile for? C'tis' brows knit in a brief frown of suspicion but he opted not to mention the woman's fleeting expression, she wanted to be mysterious then that was fine but he wasn't going to rise to it. "Why would times changing change our passion for our duty?" he asked instead. "Surely opening opportunities to all would make those of us who didn't used to have so many options more passionate if anything? Unless you're referring to the bitter sort who now actually have to compete with a much wider playing field?" Or it was a stupid platitude/attempt to be inspiring that had fallen totally flat on its face, that was also possible.
"I'd agree that if we can't work together then we make a piss poor group, especially as all of us have come out of wings that operate just fine. As for your question, either I don't follow or the answer is pretty obvious." C'tis shrugged. "By which I mean I expect us to be 'working hard and equally with passion for our duties'. I expect to be respected and to offer respect in return at least professionally - I don't promise to like all of my soon to be comrades - and I like to hope that we'll listen to one another, avoid nepotism, that sort of thing."
<> Malcarreth responded with a slight shrug of his wings. <> That and the fact that transferring now meant that they would fly in the same wing as Rochelle and Kibeth again.

He certainly made a good point there, and she had to admit she'd become one of those more passionate riders. Just not the type to rub it in everyone's face (unless you were a certain b*****d that sired her). "Fair point." She agreed with a nod. And then chuckled a little. This one had spirit. She liked that in a rider!
"Well, I'm glad to have someone that isn't afraid to lay their opinions on me without fuss." She just smiled, unfolding her arms. "I do hope, that if there is any issues with your soon to be comrades, you won't hesitate to tell me?" Did she expect the man to spill his lifes concerns on her? Shaff no! But tell her that so and so was a sharding dimglow? She certainly hoped he'd do that much. Something told her he might have many opinions about some of the wing.
Arlii glanced between the dragons before giving C'tis a more serious look. "I plan to have this wing running, or at least beginning drills, withing the sevenday. I do apologize to you, and the rest of the wing, for the lapse in time away from daily practices." Really, she wanted to have things running faster than that, but forming a new wing did take time. And she did not want to rush things too much.
The crimson dragon was silent a moment, consulting her rider's mind for the names. We flew with Wingleader H'omi and bronze Orith! She said, tail swishing from side to side. I liked to talk with the dragons from Wingleader L'gif and green Lipoth's wing too. They always had so much fun. I don't understand how they accomplished some of the things they did. From what she could remember, that wing always liked to party - which was why she found talking to those dragons so entertaining!

C'tis nodded when Arlii said it was a good point, it was and he was pleased that she wasn't afraid to acknowledge that. If she had a fragile and or oversized ego she would have contradicted him for the sake of it. "Never had a problem speaking my mind," he replied with a smirky little grin. "It's got me into plenty of trouble in the past but I've always thought it best not to honey-coat the truth. Glad you agree, and I can promise you you'll get nothing but my honest opinions. I can live with the gap in wing drills, I can pick up extra Warden work to keep me out of the wrong kind of trouble and in the right sort."
<> Malcarreth agreed with a snort. <>

Arlii had to snicker just a little. His opinions had gotten him into trouble before, huh? Of this she had no doubt! It wasn't like she herself was squeaky clean when it came to mouthing off to someone before. "I greatly appreciate that." She said sincerely. "I can promise the same. I won't honey-coat anything I have to tell you and your wingmates. Some may not like everything I have to say, but I'll be as honest as any human can." Ah, so he was a Warden as well? Excellent. He definitely would be one of her sturdy riders. One she could rely on to handle a bit more then some.
"Excellent." She approved. He wasn't the sort to waste his free time. "If it's not too much trouble, I'd like to request knowing when you go out for Warden work. Just so I know when to expect your absence for a time."
Erinaeth gave a huffy snort in amusement. Right?! I have yet to figure out this secret of theirs. But I've certainly tried! She flicked her tail, glancing at their human bonded. Things were going well, it appeared! TawnyAngel I'm sorry for making you wait so long for a reply ;n;

"Well good," C'tis nodded, "I can't stand people tiptoeing around issues." So far it was sounding as though they'd get along just fine professionally at any rate, he couldn't speak for any personal relationship. It was probably better not to have one with your superiors anyway, things got messy if you did or at least they had the potential to. "And of course," he snorted, "I mean it'd be a bit stupid if I didn't tell my wingleader when I was going to be away right? Our work's usually scheduled around wing duties but if there's something big on I might have to ask to be excused from some drills, we never miss a Fall though." So long as they weren't injured of course. < > Malcarreth suggested with a soft rumble of a chuckle. <>

"Aye, it would be a bit stupid." Arlii agreed. "Sadly, there are those that... might be a wee bit on the forgetful side." This was said with more amusement then the moment entitled, clearly meaning she was thinking about something that had happened prior to their meeting. "But alas, I'm glad to have met you one on one. I really do want to make sure all my wing members are satisfied with such a novice wingleader as I am." And she wanted to get to know them. To know what their strengths and weaknesses were. How to lead them. It would help her position them to the best of their abilities during wing drills. And falls.
Not to mention if any trouble happened to brew, she'll probably know who to question first.
Not that that will happen every day. Eri invaded her thoughts, causing the blonde to smile.
The crimson gave her blue wingmate a gleeful look. Oh wouldn't that be interesting? I'm sure it is something we could pull off. Now that was a most excellent idea! Erinaeth even shared the it with her rider, offering a few dozen "pleasepleasepleaseeeee's" in there.
Arlii gave pause, glancing at the two dragons with an inquiring look. Then she looked back towards C'tis. "Well, it appears that some little birdies would like for us to consider a 'wing formation' party." She tapped her chin thoughtfully. "Perhaps I can... pull a few strings and get us a nice little party. So long as everyone behaves." A pointed look was directed at her own dragon. Who just chuffed air at her. TawnyAngel Man... I just have no muse at all lately ;__; I'm sorry I keep making you wait!

Kyrieko D8 Sorry, I didn't realise you'd tagged! "Hu," C'tis grunted and shrugged, "true, deliberately forgetful sometimes and sometimes people are just incompetent. Good job we've got fewer of them leading us now, not that all the old biases are dead yet. I'm sure you haven't failed to notice how many bronzes and silvers are among our leaders?" But he wasn't answering to one of them so he cared a bit less than he once had, plus there was room for change and he almost dared to believe that change would go in the right direction. "And yes," C'tis shrugged, "I'd not have signed on if I minded taking the risk on your untried competence. I can only assume that the rest of the wing feels the same, unless they've just hopped on hoping that because you're new they can take you for a ride and have an easy time of it." C'tis raised an eyebrow as he spoke, he wasn't going to say it aloud but he hoped she'd pick up on 'you're not going to do that, right?' Malcarreth grinned and chuckled. < >
"A party?" C'tis echoed, his other eyebrow rising to join the first in an expression of mild and perhaps mildly pleased surprise. "Well never let it be said I turn down the chance at a party. Perhaps I'll even bring my harp to entertain everyone." There had been a time when he wouldn't have considered playing up public for even a moment in case somebody questioned his manliness but, now that he was actually a lot more confident in himself, so far as he was concerned they were welcome to question and he was prepared to prove if necessary.
