General debriefing: There has been the stirring of something that scares even the locals: a rumour has it that in the evening, the lights turn on several of the odd pod-like buildings. Music can be heard from within before the light flickers off. This investigation must happen, due to this claim, in the evening after dark.
* C class difficulty level (must have a team of three, at least one of them must be an intermediate trainee)

MECHANICS

* MECHANICS: RP assembling a team, as necessary, before heading towards the Lighthouse portal to request a portal to Survey Mission 4C. Once there, roll a 100-sided dice and match the roleplay to the results below, as well as any reactions. Players can continue rolling until any of the players roll a INSANITY ENCOUNTER, in which case the BATTLE PHASE begins. See below for battle phase mechanics.
1- 20: The darkness combined with the fog make it extremely difficult to navigate. As you move your flashlight against the ground all you see is the crackled pavement, the pods obscured from sight -

- As a skeletal face carved right into the cement leers at you -

- And disappears. It was just your imagination... right?
21 - 40: Tattered pieces of fabric seem to be hanging from a few smashed windows. Upon further investigation you realize it is actually strips of skin peeled off some hapless creature.
41 - 60: You take a look at the pods again. They look normal enough, though none of them have the odd flickering light. Well that's a relief. A strange jarring noise interrupts you and as you look back, the order of the pods have changed, from location to colour.
61 - 80: You hear music playing in the background, a sort of wailing, foreign music. It seems to be coming from right above you, but nothing is there. Only you can hear it.
81- 100: BOSS ENCOUNTER:
- As you continue walking down the sidewalk you hear a large crack, followed by another. A strange gas explodes from underneath, making you extremely dizzy, as you cough to figure out what is going on, fighting for air now. You have exposed your entire team to a hallucinogen, making everything more terrifying than ever as your vision swims and hops uncontrollably and your hearing becomes muted. Something creaks, groans, lurches underneath you, but is that your imagination?

- BOSS MECHANICS: This boss is a mob that has collective 100 HP. Every time you attack it (following the general battle rules), you TAKE 8 damage. AS you can't really see the boss, most of it will have to be dependent on what you can see, if anything at all, from strange faceless figures lurching, half-hopping towards you to the smiling dead coming back and swiping at you. Make sure to tally the boss's total HP (the damage you did to it) at the bottom of your post as well as your total HP and the damage you did that round. If the boss's HP hits 0, you have defeated it, and your team can now take the portal back.

* 4 mission reward points for completing this successfully

It was time to take her new charges out and see what they were made of. Something that could have been done on island with a few spats, but Peyton had fallen into the belief that trial by fire was not only expected on Deus, but damn near required. Besides, she was confident in her ability to handle whatever came surging their way.

So her two trainees would get get another early wake up call. The text went out at seven AM. Peyton was already out of the dorms and headed for the lighthouse, hip pack filled with runic goodies, jacket zipped snugly, scarf looped loosely around her shoulders. Long, curly hair was pulled back in a neat braid that slithered down to her hips. It left the tattoos on her back and the back of her neck very visible, along with her largest, and the most recent scars.

He had been waiting for something like this. It seemed there was a penchant for ******** early of the clock as a time for being active and fully coherent, and Andy wasn't pleased at all. Both Jordy and Peyton had assured him (several times) that he'd "get used to it" with the unspoken "or you die" tagged on. Andy got that.

But he still hated mornings with a passion most reserved for DMV lines, rush-hour traffic on the 405 freeway or for Comcast "Customer Service".

So the 7 am text was glowered at. Growled at. Whined at, even. But five minutes later he pinged Peyton back with "OK" while he was getting dressed and trying to put his clothing on straight. While not spilling coffee on himself. It was a close scrape, but he'd make it to the lighthouse with almost a minute to spare.

Ever since Allan's text, Mimi had taken the habit of sleeping with her phone now, ensuring that she wouldn't miss any fanatic texts. It was probably a good thing she did, because the first buzz had woken her up.
It wasn't a fanatical text and it wasn't from someone random, but Mimi was excited all the same. Oh boy, her very first mission!

She bounced up right away, debating if she should text Peyton back.
... no, she would see her soon. She had to make sure she was super prepared!!
Most of that half hour was spent grooming her hair and braiding it, making sure every part of her looked impeccable.
With a final smoothing out of her dress, Mimi slipped on her coat, clasped Dae's pendant for good luck, and bound out the door.

Arriving right at 7:30, she saw that Andy and Peyton were already there. Oh yay! Was it just the three of them?
"Bonjour, mes amis!!"
She waved vigorously, and rushed up to the two.
"What kind of mission are we going on??"
She was just SO so excited.

Andy was the first of her trainees on the scene, and she gave him a bright smile as he came shuffling up to her. "Still not used to the early mornings, huh?" She'd seen zombies that seemed more alert than the poor trainee did. In contrast, Peyton was positively buzzing with energy. She was a morning person, had always been one, though recently that might have been more to do with not sleeping well, than personal preference.

Teasing or not, she gave him a sympathetic pat on the arm as Mimi headed up the path towards them. "Don't worry, you'll be wide awake soon enough." Or in serious trouble.

"Morning Mimi." Lavender eyes flicked down to the dress, and a brow arched curiously at the other girl. Dresses were usually not great for missions, but it seemed Mimi was not yet aware of that. The trainee looked shiny and new, expertly put together, and Peyton found herself wondering how long that newness was going to last. "In the future, I would suggest pants or shorts. Missions are usually dangerous, and maneuverability and agility are very important for Suns." The gentle chastising came with a soft smile. She looked up at Andy, including him in this next part. "Also, always bring your scarves. I don't care if you're wandering around a sweltering desert, you never know when you'll need that barrier to protect your face and airway." The file in her hand was poked at both of them for emphasis.

"Today we'll be heading to the San Zhi resort." A hot spot, and the sight of Peyton's first external mission as well. "Folks have been reporting flickering lights, music, and other odd activity. We're investigating the cause, and eliminating it if we find it." When they found it.

"Are there any questions?"

He wouldn't even bother trying to pretend he wasn't staunchly against mornings when Pey ribbed him about it gently. "Not even close. Got coffee though." And, in one of the deep pockets of his cargo pants, there was not only another can of iced coffee but also some goddamned caffeinated gum. He had, at the very least, headed but Peyton and Jordan's warnings that he'd either get used to mornings or he'd get himself killed.

Mimi walked up while he was still puzzling over the tiny Hunter's patting him - honestly, it was too early and Mimi was ******** energetic. Christ no. "Mornin' Mimi."

Peyton was talking about operation-suitable clothing ********. The scarf. He'd forgotten; the oversight made him colour slightly, but he mostly just nodded at his 'senpai' (uuuugh) and had the good grace to look abashed. But thankfully she went into talk of the mission and he allowed himself to soak in the details given. The coffee he'd had while dressing was starting to spread through his system and by the time she was done he looked less like the walking undead and more like a normal person first thing in the morning.

"Just how likely I am to get my a** handed to me, if you happen to know."

"Morning!!"
She chirped again, eager to get the day started.

At the mention of proper clothing attire though, Mimi looked down at her dress and frowned. Oh darn, most of the clothing she had packed were mostly dresses. Looked like she would have to do some shopping soon.
"Yes ma'am!"
She couldn't help tugging on the hem of her coat, as if attempting to cover what she was wearing.
Boots, leggings, and a cute dress. Papa had always told her presentation was important, and shojou magical girl stuff seemed to have an unwritten rule of always looking cute while fighting baddies. Maybe it was a little different in the real world.

At least she had her scarf!
She pulled it up across her face. Just like a ninja.
It was pulled back down when Peyton started the briefing.

"Ooh, a resort!"
The first thing she thought of was Disneyland.
"Could it be ghosts?"
It sounded like ghosts, yup.

She had both trainee's attention as she went over the mission, and that made the small Sun very happy. They were attentive, cooperative, and so far seemed to take orders well. All good traits for a hunter, especially a foot soldier. So she spared a pleased little smile for the both of them.

"A ghost isn't outside the scope of possibilities." It had been something like that when Peyton and her team had paid the resort a visit in her first year. No telling what it might be now. The same thing, or some new beasty come to wreak havoc.

Andrew's question had pale brows arching, and she really couldn't help the amused twitch of full lips that followed. That he would ask was both very cheeky, but showed he had already grasped a fundamental aspect of their job.

They would be hurt. It was only a matter of how badly.

"That depends on how well you pay attention to your surroundings, and how well you follow orders." She pointed the file at him, then handed it back to the tech on duty so they could key in the coordinates for the portal. "Stay close, stay alert, and yo should be fine."

As the portal blazed into life, and pendants were handed out to them, Peyton lead the way through.

Oh, he got it. He'd seen his brother's body, seen Peyton's scarring, and even some of the more visible wounds wrought on various other members of their faction. It hadn't taken much for him to key into the fact that the Sun Hunters were basically first out, first to die. It hadn't dampened his enthusiasm much, honestly - he was still proud. This was the best way for him to help protect his family and loved ones.

A ghost, huh? Andy could deal with a ghost. "Yes ma'am." He responded to her order to stay close and pay attention. Tiny Peyton might have been, but she was no doubt fierce and knew what the hell she was talking about. Andy was going to learn everything he could from her.

The blond took the pendant and put it around his neck before following Peyton through the portal.

Ahhhh ghosts, how exciting!!
Mimi couldn't wait to see all the neat supernatural things.
"Oui!!"
She would do her very best not to stray from the group. She would not disappoint!!

Taking the pendant, she clasped it to her chest before following after both Peyton and Andy.

It was dark as they stepped out of the portal. Darker than it should be. The sun was up there somewhere, for at least the next hour and a half, but hidden behind such a dense layer of clouds, nothing was getting through. It made what was already a creepy place all the more ominous looking. Shadows stretched on endlessly, blending one into the next, and the air around them sat still and heavy, with not so much as a hint of a breeze.

It was also hot, humid. Peyton glanced up at the clouds as she waited for her two trainees to join her. It felt like they were on the verge of a storm, but as thick as the clouds were, they aren't dark enough for it.

"Alright guys. We're going to search as a unit. It'll be slower, but much safer. I'm going to take point, I want the both of you in front of me by a few steps, and staggered to the sides." It wasn't ideal, but with the build of the team it would let her keep them both in sight as they made their way through the resort. If they'd had a Moon with them she'd have stationed them at her back, but it was just the three Suns.

She summoned her weapons, indicating they should do the same, then nodded them both forwards. "Follow the path. We're heading towards the interior, that's where the reports indicate the most activity."

syrie
We can start rolling now, but we should probably stagger them, give everyone a chance to respond to each prompt before rolling another one.

Mimi's excitement seemed undaunted by the idea that there might be ghosts (or worse) and that the likelihood of being injured was directly related to whether or not they were paying attention. Andy had to give the girl some credit, she was vehemently upbeat.

Stepping out of the portal, the fine hairs at the back of Andy's neck pricked up; it was dark and misty...the perfect breeding ground for shadows. Shadows suck. And hide things. This is balls, I hope nobody gets hurt while we're scoping out this spook-show. "Jesus Christ, Peyton - it's hotter'n balls here." It would be less than a minute before he was sweating through his shirt! Tropical and shadowy, with a bite of ozone that felt like the space was holding it's breath. Andy moved closer to the petite Sun Hunter once Mimi cleared the portal, eyes sweeping around for anything that might be contemplating showing it's head. Nothing. Good.

Rrrrr...Andy! Not safe. Not. Rex guard!

"Yeah yeah..." He muttered at his partner, summoning his shotgun and cradling the stock familiarly. "Yes ma'am." The trainee moved foward slowly, weapon at the ready as he stepped down the path warily; he and Mimi forming the base of an inverted triangle with Peyton as they moved. Andy took in some tattered, aged fabric that hung limply from some of the broken windows and peered at it uncomprehendingly for long moments. When it dawned on him that the fabric was not actually fabric, he blanched. "You've got to be kidding me. The hell kinda place is this?"

It was skin. Skin curtains. This resort was ten kinds of ******** up already and they'd just arrived.

Andy glanced back at Peyton, eyes oddly luminous in the low light. "You take a guy to the nicest places, y'know that?"

"Yes Peyton-san!"
With a flash of light, Mimi had her sword summoned, still excited for what was to come.
Are you ready, Dae-sama? We might get to fight monsters!

Considering that it was her first mission, it had not yet sunk in just how dangerous said mission could be. All she thought about was meeting spooky creatures and ghosts and maybe even a boss fight! Pain was just an illusion when one sat behind a monitor, disconnected from the character who experienced it in the game.

In real life however...
Mimi's cheerful and upbeat attitude might have faltered slightly when they stepped through the portal, and she clutched the sword tightly. Everything was so dark and spooky...

When she noticed Andy had caught sight of something, Mimi turned her head to look as well... and flinched when she noticed just what it was.
"EEEEK! Is... is that skin??!"

"Yep, it sure is." Though as hot as it felt, the Sahara was worst. She would take hot and humid over sweltering and blazing any day. She was also fairly certain she had had a lot longer to acclimate to tropical climates, having been on Deas for a number of years now.

Andy and Mimi fell into formation and Peyton brought up the rear, already on high alert. Unlike her two trainees, the senior Sun already knew the sort of thing they could find themselves up against. Andy seemed appropriately nervous. Mimi, while obedient, didn't seem to be taking things seriously, yet. She was still green, it wouldn't take very long for her to realize what she was up against.

Not very long at all, apparently.

Andy's question pulled her attention onto the drapes. "A hot spot for Fear activity." Skin curtains was pretty tame, all things considered. She glanced between the two of them, before grinning up at Andy with half lidded eyes. "Gotta keep things interesting?"

She jerked her chin, indicating they should keep moving forward, but the smile lingered.

Andy whistled a bit at Peyton's reply, but moved out when she indicated he should; made sense too - if they stayed in one spot too long they couldn't expect to complete their mission, could they?

And skin-curtains aside, the place was creepy and hot and he did not want to be lingering forever. The rangy trainee's eyes caught a group of pods as he moved past, Rex ready but angled at the ground. They seemed to ripple from the corner of his eye and he whipped around with the shotgun pulled up and aimed at where he'd thought something was...but there were only pods.

It was just that they had changed color. "Really classy place, remind me to reciprocate sometime." He slowly lowered his weapon and glanced at Mimi and Peyton, "Sorry, thought I saw something moving."

Judging from Peyton-san's reaction, it seemed something like this was normal. That, or Peyton-san wasn't easily spooked by such things. Such a cool senpai. * A *
While Mimi wasn't super familiar with fear stuff yet, it seemed there would be more strange things popping out. She couldn't be scared. She had to stay strong, cool, collected...
She would do her best to impress senpai!

As Andy fanned out to a side, Mimi started looking in the other direction, keeping an eye peeled for anything unusual. She turned her head just in time to see the other sun trainee whip out his weapon, and froze. Was... was there something there?
I-It's ok, Andy-san! This place is pretty spooky, isn't it?"
While she tried to act brave, it was hard to hide the stutter in her voice. It was dark and hard to see, and while she wasn't a fan of jump scare games, this... was the perfect environment for something to-

Mimi looked down to see a face suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
"KYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!"
