So, like, she hadn't had a senshi phone since giving hers to Mistral, and that had been literally a year ago. It hadn't been that big a deal for a while - she'd been out of town for most of that time and had no need for a senshi phone - but now she was back, and it was turning out to suck to go out on patrol and meet people and have to admit that she was lacking a really basic piece of tech.

Oops.

Operating on the theory that if she walked around long enough, she would find a cat, Europa took to the streets. So far tonight, she'd skirted a couple of captains and dusted a low-level youma, but hadn't seen any guardian cats. Maybe her hypothesis was about to be disproven?

Ugh. How disappointing. And her feet hurt - what was it with senshi uniforms and having to walk several miles in heels every night? Europa sighed, sank down onto a bench, and began to wrestle her boot off.

"BAD DOG! NO! GOAWAYYOUSTUPIDTHING!"

High pitched, angry demands split the air, driven by a pair of healthy, if small, lungs. Small paws skittered across the cement as a silver cat sped out of the shadows between a sign post and a tree and darted over the freshly mowed lawn. A yowl of anger and threat issued from the creature as the thing chasing it also burst into view, red tongue lolling from the side of it's mouth and its ears flopping joyfully against it's head as it ran.

"NO! LEAVE ME ALONE! BAD DOG!"

Ash had had no intentions of facing anything today more taxing than a cupcake almost as large as her head, but it seemed unexpected windfall drew many opportunists besides the Silver Lady. The only saving grace to being surprised in the middle of her un-lady-like feasting was that the thing doing the surprising was not a youma, but an entirely mundane domestic dog. Not that that fact made things any safer for a delicate lady like herself, out and about without a senshi!

That sad fact was the very first thing on the agenda that needed remedied and Ash had taken off in the direction of the nearest order signature she could feel, which had taken her quite a few desperate blocks to reach.

Ash was a silver streak as she made right for the senshi girl on the bench, uncaring who she was or what she was doing right at that moment, because she had just been appointed the Mauvian's new Savior.

"Heads up!" The guardian shrilled as she launched herself at the girl, pouncing from the ground to her knee before pushing off that to use her shoulder as a step to the back of the bench, putting her firmly between the sleek silver body and the yapping, pearly jaws close behind.

Europa looked up suddenly at the approaching commotion and - OH, HEY, LOOK, A GUARDIAN CAT! And, fortunately for both of them, something no more ferocious than a labrador mix, its huge paws betraying that it was only half-grown. Still, it had teeth and a very loud bark (and a thick leather collar around its neck - if not for the cat, she would have grabbed the dog and returned it to whatever back yard it had escaped from), so it needed to be dealt with.

Non-violently.

Europa dropped her boot, which had finally slipped free of her ankle a moment before, got to her feet, and grabbed the cat. "Hi," she said. "Hang on."

She hopped up onto the bench, scanned the street quickly to plan her jump, and then launched herself towards the roof of an auto-repair shop.

The dog, meanwhile, busied itself with chewing Europa's abandoned boot.

Landing on the roof, Europa set the cat down carefully in front of her. "Would you believe me if I said I'd been looking for a guardian cat all night?" she asked. "I'm Sailor Europa... I'm not sure if we've met." (She'd been around a relatively large number of guardian cats in her tenure, but unfortunately, she'd caught the names of relatively few.)

The guardian made a small, put-upon mew as she was swept up, but she made no further protest as she was carted about. Rather, she hung obligingly limp and trusting as the senshi removed her from danger with a neat leap to a nearby building. Panting hard from her scramble and tired besides, Ash threw herself down on her side with a dramatic moan of effort, her side heaving.

"UGH, Darling, you are a life saver! I despise dogs for this very reason!" She moaned as she recovered. Arching her body, she stretched out tired muscles and got a good look at snowy white paws gone dirty from traipsing about. It was enough to make her put aside her dramatics in favor of a quick wash, and while she was at it, setting the rest of herself to rights now that the danger had passed. It was one thing to get mussed in the midst of action, it was quite another to let it continue after the fact. "Nasty, smelly, slobbery things with barely a brain in their heads sometimes... Thinking a delicate lady like myself is a suitable playmate, or worse, chew toy! UGH."

Part way through her ablutions she remembered the questions and straightened up to wash her face with a few swipes of her paw before she replied.

"Well! Hello, Darling." She said cheerfully, placing her paws neatly under her. "Europa, you said? Its a pleasure to meet you! I'm Ash, or if you like, the Silver Lady. What a shame we haven't met before, but I'm glad we have now. Thank you SO MUCH for saving me from that beast. I truly, truly appreciate it."

Blinking for a moment, Ash tilted her head, her tail twitching. "Did you say you were looking for a Guardian cat? Whatever for?"

Europa nodded, watching the cat as she recovered. "I've always been much more of a cat person," she agreed. "Even before the senshi thing - lucky for me that you're our animal overlords. In an alternate universe, we probably have guardian chihuahuas."

She was willing to bet that that was a terrible universe.

"It's lovely to meet you, Ash," she added.

Carefully taking a seat across from the cat, Europa explained, "I gave my phone to a knight about a year ago. She wanted to do science to it? Anyway, I've been needing to get a new one since - please tell me I'm eligible for a free upgrade and it's not going to be like, four hundred dollars, or however it works at Verizon."

The Mauvian laughed at the absurd notion of guardian dogs... What a silly idea. Everyone knew only cats were suited to this kind of work. They had the discipline and intelligence to be effective, unlike the monsterous brutes she tended to run into. Imagine something like that, mentoring senshi. They'd all be dead within a year, she suspected. Maybe she was underestimating them, but really... All dogs did was chase her with the end goal of eating her. That didn't sound like the actions of a creature suitable to be a guardian.

"Goodness... You gave your phone to a knight? I mean, it is a fine example of superior Mauvian technology, but don't they have magic rings to use?" What a curious thought... Could the phone technology be combined with the rings? Would this allow them to be used when they weren't powered up? Maybe there were benefits she hadn't considered before. "I've not had a lot of contact with Knights, I'm afraid. But senshi things are right up my alley! You'll be needing a brand new phone, I believe."

The sleek gray body gathered itself and Ash launched herself off the back of the bench. She flipped neatly end over end and when she landed, something fell beside her with a clatter. Ash hummed as she pounced on it and worked the case open to fiddle with something inside.

"I'm afraid without the piece from your old phone I won't be able to get any of your contacts or pictures. You'll have to start over. BUT! On the bright side, you'll be doing so with the latest model!" Ash stepped back with a happy carol to reveal the new smartphone she had summoned and set up. "Here you are, Darling! No charge, of course. Just a promise to lend a hand if I'm ever harassed by one of those nasty creatures again."

She settled back with a self-satisfied expression, starting in on grooming her bib. Yes, she was totally awesome, but she was modest too!

Europa blushed, trying to decipher Ash's tone. "I don't actually know what Mistral did with my phone," she confessed. She knew for sure it had been taken apart, but if the knight had ever found out anything from it, well, Europa didn't know - she'd been out of town by that point. "I could see about finding out for you. She did do some really cool stuff with their rings - holograms and stuff."

She picked the phone up from beside the cat, turning it over in her hands. The new models were certainly a lot fancier than the old ones, but they seemed to upgrade with the times. "My first one of these was a flip phone," she said with a slight laugh. "Astraea gave it to me. Well, I guess she was Luna at that point..."

What had ever happened to her, Europa wondered, but recognized that was completely off-topic.

"Thank you," she said, slipping the phone into subspace with practiced grace. "I.... I don't think I have that many contacts that would be worth saving. I've been in the business so long that I've outlasted most of my friends one way or another."

Which sounded pathetic. "You can count on me," she assured the cat, getting to her feet.

The new senshi, Europa, made as though to leave and Ash jumped to her paws in dismay, reaching out to hook her wrist with a soft paw. Her claws were safely tucked away and it was her wide-eyed, pleading expression she brought to bear instead.

"Oh! Are you leaving? We've just met, Darling! Won't you stay and talk with me for a little bit?" She crooned, giving the wrist a gentle tug. "Please? I would adore getting to know you a little before you disappear."

People usually seemed eager to spend time with a soft, lovely cat like herself. Has she come off to gruff or flippant, to turn this girl off of her? How sad! Maybe she'd be able to make it up to her if she could get her to stay. Not to mention, being an eternal, she probably had so many stories to tell. No one got to that stage without learning and seeing things, and usually those things were worth hearing about. At least to someone who made it her business to know things and gather information.

Astrea, for example. Who was that? Why did her name change? Flip phones, she had only seen once in her experience and only with Castor and Pollux. How on earth had they all functioned with such out dated technology? It was a wonder and a puzzle.

Europa grinned suddenly - she hadn't expected Ash to want to linger, but she was happy to spend more time talking. She sat back down, spreading her ribbons carefully out beneath her. "Okay," she said, exhaling with a bit of a nervous laugh. "Yeah, we can do that. I don't meet a lot of guardian cats, to be totally honest? I knew a couple when I was a newer senshi, but I've been out of town a few times and it seems like every time I come back, there's a whole new cast to meet."

She sighed - that just made her sound like a slacker, but truth be told, maybe she was a slacker. She hadn't been to her moon in going on three years. The last major fight she'd been in was against Leto, over a year ago. She was just... a mess.

"Do you have a senshi you call yours?" she asked. She didn't think that attached cats usually wandered without their senshi, so it seemed unlikely - but it also seemed worthwhile to ask.

The silver cat brightened and waited only long enough for the senshi to seat herself before climbing into her lap to claim it for her own. Small paws kneaded her legs until satisfied and then she settled down on them, cat-loaf style. Purr rumbling and eyes slits, she looked entirely too pleased with herself and her place in the world right now.

Senshi laps were the best laps, really.

"I don't have a senshi." Ash said, her voice vibrating with her purr. "I haven't really found anyone I want to bond with more than I enjoy helping all senshi... I thought, starting out, that I would find someone, but the longer I'm at this, the more I've come to rather like being unattached. It means I can have many senshi that I call my own and make myself useful all over the place. Its nice. I thought maybe it would be lonely, but I have so many senshi now, I should think that's rather hard to claim."

The cat laughed as her tail tip curled up and down, her ears splayed comfortably.

"I assume you don't have access to a cat, am I right, Darling? Otherwise you'd have gone to them for a new phone. Have you been a senshi terribly long? I've only been awakened maybe..." Her face scrunched up in thought, trying to count the months. "A year and a half, or there abouts."

Europa settled her hands on Ash's back, rubbing her gently between the shoulder blades. "I awakened in 2009," she said, "Right before my seventeenth birthday." Putting it that way made her feel old - she was halfway to twenty-three now, with nearly six years of superhero work on her resume (granted, she'd taken some significant breaks).

"I've met a lot of cats over the years," she added. There'd been Chloe, who awakened her, and Derpraline, who'd handled one of her upgrades. Abel, bonded to Pyxis, who she hadn't seen or heard from for years despite their adolescent closeness. Tomlin and Horatio were both Jovian cats - but she hadn't had the energy to track down either of them since returning to Destiny City this time around, perhaps out of fear that they'd met some terrible fate...? And, of course, Astraea-Luna was long vanished. "But none that I see on a regular basis anymore. Maybe it's because I don't have any promotions left?"

There wasn't anything above Eternal besides Princess, as far as she knew - and if there was anything that Europa was certain of, it was that she wasn't a princess. She didn't think she very much wanted to be one - it seemed like a lot of responsibility for one person. She'd seen what the pressures of royalty had done to Castor, and she was decided - no, thank you.

"I do wish I knew more cats," she sighed. "It would be convenient. I guess I'll have to start with you - you are now a cat that I know, after all."

The gentle rubbing brought out a warm, rattling purr deep in Ash's chest and she relaxed into it. The only part of her that moved was the tip of her tail as it twitched gently and her sides moving in and out with her breathing.

"Maybe... but I certainly don't think a cat's work is done just because their senshi are all grown up! There is always something a cat could do for them, you just need to be clever about it. I guess that's just how I feel about it though. Maybe other cats only like senshi who are still growing, but that just seems sort of silly." She tilted her head, stretching out her neck for better rubbing. Finally, a rich little chuckle rolled from her throat and she tilted her head back again, giving Europa a one-eyed look.

"You do know me now! And I know lots of people. I make it a point of pride to know lots of people and lots of things..." She hummed softly, her tail flicking. "If you've been around for a while, then you know something of the history of this war, maybe? So many of my senshi are new, I haven't had a lot of the details of things from them. I've been working with Kallichore to update the Senshi Primer. I would love it if I could pick your mind for things to add to it! History in particular would be very helpful."

Europa laughed uncertainly. "Maybe," she said, liking Ash's attitude. Maybe she'd just had bad luck so far - perhaps life was different for senshi who could count on the steadying presence of a guardian cat. Maybe they made fewer bad decisions, or were caught in binds less frequently. "I can't presume to speak for other cats."

Kallichore, though, that was a name she recognized. Europa's eyes lit up. "I know her!" she exclaimed. "She was - um. I tried to make all the moons of jupiter that I could find team up," Europa explained, "but it was so much work, and I got sick, and... I haven't really seen anyone in a long time. I feel like I failed them, because I was too sick to run meetings and I had to go out of town and... It's stupid. I wasn't calling myself captain but I was doing all the work of a captain and it was exhausting and... kind of thankless."

What had she been expecting, though? She'd never asked for appreciation, and she'd probably never done anything worthy of it, either.

"I'd love to try to help you," she said, scratching Ash behind the ears, "if you're okay with the fact that I'm kind of a loser failure of a senshi."

Whimsical Blue
Europa = that kid who used to be on the honor roll every semester and is now neurotic and burned out. wink
PostPosted: Wed Aug 19, 2015 9:20 pm

Ash bumped her head against the senshi girl, rumbling a comforting sort of purr.

"Its not your fault you got sick, hmm? No one can control that, right? So no worrying about it! You're back now, and that's what matters." She said with a firm nod. "Cheer up, Darling. You'll do better now, I'm sure of it."

The guardian kneaded her paws against Europa's legs, settling in and getting comfortable. They could potentially be here for a while, but that wasn't a bad thing if the experiences of this older senshi could benefit the newer ones who still had need of such a thing as a senshi primer. Not every cat was as forthcoming or diligent in her duties as Ash was and she was quite aware of that fact.

"I should think that I can judge whether or not you are a loser failure all on my own, thank you." She said before a wide yawn split her jaws wide. "Now. I want to hear about what you know about our history. Start as far back as you know of, and then move forward until the start of this war we're all fighting in, and then detail THAT for me, ok? A surprising number of people don't know anything about it and I would very much like to be able to enlighten them. Don't worry if its not entirely accurate. I'll be trying to find others to help fill in any gaps or inconsistencies, so its no trouble if you have a hard time remembering something."

Lifting a delicate paw, Ash pressed it to her visor and the screen jumped out, holographic, before her paws. She reached out to press a couple of the keys and then, satisfied, dismissed the hologram again.

Europa thought otherwise: it had sort of been her fault that she got sick, messing around on her homeworld as she had been. But Ash was being very nice to her and she didn't want to ruin that by admitting to being a complete moron who ate untested alien vegetables. She smiled slightly, running a hand over the top of Ash's head. "Thanks."

She was glad for the change of subject. "I was awakened in, um, November 2009," she said. "Like two weeks before my seventeenth birthday. I think the first senshi started awakening a few months earlier, at the start of the summer?" She wracked her brain, trying to think of who was still around from those days. "Castor or Polaris might know more about the really early stuff. Or... Regulus awoke in October that year, I think?"

"There was a meeting early-on," she continued. "February or something, in the high school gymnasium. Astraea set it all up and explained to us that she'd been the guardian cat to a group of senshi in Japan back in the early 90s under the name Luna, and that the Negaverse had wiped that team out really quickly. Their leader's name was Sailor Moon... we were supposed to be looking for her reincarnation, but no one's mentioned that to me in years. Personally... I've stopped waiting on Moon Princesses. They're not going to help us."

Chibimoon sure hadn't.

"It was all pretty routine for a while - dusting youma, fighting Negaversers. They were pulling starseeds at that point, not harvesting energy, so people were dropping like flies. It was bad. They were all murderers, not like these officers now who pretend they've never done anything wrong. The Parallel senshi started to show up around then, and then at the end of the school year, the first coma wave happened. A lot of us wound up having this shared dream in a place called Tartaros, and when we came out of it, the Parallel senshi were gone... except for Ares."
